  • Hey, We're the Ladies of Sosa🇸🇸! We are just a few girls from South Sudan living in the diaspora hoping to shine a light on our traditional customs, culture, and people.
    We understand that trying to represent a vast demographic of people can leave room for human error, so we welcome any polite suggestions in the comments.

    In this episode, we feature Aker Ajing aka Mama Yeye. She is currently living in Houston, and is known for her bold fusion recipes which push the envelope on traditional African dishes. As you’ll see in this episode, Aker’s food preparation and presentation style is an art form within itself.
    She was gracious enough to let us inside her home to show us some of the most recognized south Sudanese dishes.

    Mama yeye’s food Ingredients:
    Foul (Fava Beans)
    - 2 cans of Sava Beans (canned or fresh)
    - wash the beans, pour In a separate pot and add water
    -add cumin, salt, and pepper to taste
    - use good quality extra virgin olive oil/sesame oil
    - add 4 wedges of cream cheese (The laughing cow brand)
    -After beans are cooked and seasoned, add onions, tomatoes, and hard boiled egg (optional).
    Salata Keymot (Salad)
    -Diced Roma Tomatoes
    -red onions
    - 1 full lime squeezed
    - extra virgin olive oil
    -salt & pepper to taste
    - Half cucumber (optional)
    -Add 1 table spoon of peanut butter
    - Add cilantro (optional)
    Spinach Stew
    - 1 bag of spinach
    - Half cup of water
    - peanut butter to taste
    - black pepper, Maggi (chicken bullion), white onions
    Sheya
    - Lamb chops
    - bay Leaves
    - Cinnamon stick
    - rosemary and thyme
    - onions and challots
    - bell peppers (optional)
    - seasoning: Garlic, cumin, Corrinander, sweet smoked, paprika, black pepper and maggi.
    - Thai chilli peppers/harbenero for optional spice

    Mula kaymote. Usually it's made with korofo lubia (black eye peas beans) but in diaspora we use spinach because its more available.

    Cowpea leaves - ngete (Bari language) with peanut butter (köimöt) and some tomatoes (balandura); onions (böliki); okra (mulanda) wonderful with cassava (gwanda) asida.

    The spinach and peanut butter stew is called Mullah Cumbo (pronounced Comb-bow). At least that's what it is referred to in the Dinka language.

    As an older man, nothing makes me happier than to see young black women modestly dressed like you four. Since I'm vegan, it would be nice if you could recommend a vegan stew recipe for me since I'm resourceful and practical like the South Sudanese.

    I am African American don't know my exact African lineage is (most likely mostly West African) but in college I used peanut butter a lot I used to mix onions and tomatoes with chunky peanut butter and jalapeño peppers with no knowledge of Sudanese food. I also used to add a spoonful of chunk peanut butter to my chicken ramen noodle cups. I had no idea where that came from...

      That sounds delicious actually 😋 Many South Sudanese staple dishes are made with peanut butter and spices. We’ve had a spicy chicken stew from Liberia where they also added peanut butter.

    My dad is from Eritrea but he lived for a long time in Sudan. But do sudanese eat the same like eritrean?? Are there some similarities?

    first of all you guys are so cuteeee. its blue dress short hair fa meeee. and its intresting u guys use penut butter didnt know that. i thought that was more west african. it west africa they make casava leave stew with penut butter thats the most similar thing i can think of but it has meat and fish and stuff

      Yes, the newest country in the world! We gained independence from Sudan in 2011 forming our own country South Sudan. 🇸🇸☺️
