One of the best videos I have watched, and I’ve watched plenty. Not sure how it doesn’t have at least 100,000 views! That relationship is worth more than anything else in this world!
I suspect it's the title that puts people off. It's actually "Son and his Dad ride the Divide on an amazing adventure", not an oil company riding the divide. It was in my stream for a month before I looked at it. And I almost didn't, which would have been a shame. I suggest a title change.

This is one of the most inspiring stories I've ever seen. I've recently purchased a bike to adventure ride. It's been 15 years and now my 15 year old son wants to ride. My hope is that he and I can take a trip like this some day. Thank you for sharing this. It's exactly what I needed and perfectly timed.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, Eddie! We are happy to hear it inspired you. We are lucky to have Wyatt on our video team to document his amazing adventures!
I think a Japanese bike like a WR250R or DRZ 400 would have inspired a bit more confidence when out far from home. I don't trust KTM for electric stuff. fantastic Father and Son Adventure. The Best!!
On paper, the 690/701 is the perfect bike for this ride. It’s too bad that you have to replace a large percentage of the components on the bike right off the showroom floor, and then it’s still not reliable. A Japanese 250 would be great for the off-road sections, as long as you were packed like a true minimalist, but definitely not ideal on the pavement. ... Although, the reliability of not having to stop for repairs would more than make up for the lost speed on pavement.
@Tim Brandt I own a Vstrom 650. Very poor ground clearance and unsuitable suspension. Probably could do it though. I'm not ure I am strong enough to pick it up?
What better thing to do for a father and son team who are both into motorcycling - bloody well done I say! Myself and my son Mitch are thinking about doing this very same ride in the near future! Thanks for sharing some intimate moments and memories that will never be forgotten!
What an amazing adventure between a father and son. You both shared something most will never experience. My son and I have rode trails together and are planning an epic trip soon. I believe this is the route we will take. Well done gentleman!
Great video and story, the relationship between father and son on this amazing adventure. Thanks for cluing me in on this video, Lee, of your ride along and across the great divide. And showing my wife and I your work (and that very cool buggy of yours).

Good for your dad getting back out there. I'm a few yrs. younger and just trying to get back after a dual sport foot injury. Something changes when you get into your 50's, you just don't want to crash and have any more and broken bones. Great video, thank you for sharing. cheers
Fantastic video and footage. The father - son rides are the best! Just finished the TAT with my son in September so I guess we need to look at going south to north!
What a fantastic video. It touched on so many of the things I love about dual sport and motorcycle touring in general. The added story of a father and son achieving together is a total bonus! 👍
Did the ride w my son 8 years ago and loved the challenge 450 Husky & xr650r no problems. Consider a side trip through Magrudor corridor then back to the route via Lewis and Clark trail. Really nice.
This brought a tear to my eye man. How amazing that you and your father got to make this awesome memory together! My dads to old to do this but maybe I'll get lucky and one of my sons will want to do something like this. Ride safe and thank you for sharing the adventure!
Really glad that you enjoyed the video! I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to do this with my Dad. I only hope that you get to have this same experience someday, because it was an absolute blast!

Fantastic video guys. We are doing trip this July from Vancouver BC to Mexico using the gpskevin route. Just curious as to whether or not you were wearing armour under your jackets or does the trail not justify the extra protection? We did Vancouver to Tuktoyaktuk ( Arctic Circle / Dempster Highway ) last year. You and your dad would love it. Scenery is amazing.
Glad you enjoyed the video! We were riding in the Klim Badlands Pro Jacket and Pants Combo, which have excellent armor built right into them. I personally am of the mindset that more protection is better than less haha! I definitely think there are portions that can justify having a decent amount of protection, especially if you go for the red offshoots on the GPSKevin tracks. Your trip definitely sounds awesome! I really hope you enjoy doing the Divide Ride. It was absolutely amazing. Can't recommend it enough.
@@higherbasemedia Sorry to bother you with another question, but how did you find overnight temps on your trip? Should we be packing for cooler temps while in Montana and Colorado?
@@autowerkesexclusive we had temps down into the 20s and 30s overnight as we got further north. I had a 20 degree Big Agnes sleeping bag that I used for the whole trip. By the end it was getting a bit cold for the 20 degree bag but I could offset it by sleeping in a bit of clothing.

Sitting in Mountain Iron watching and enjoying your video! I see you know a friend of mine, Josh K. This looks a like a good trip for my F650GS2. We'll have to meet up in Duluth and chat about this soon.
Awesome adventure! Your Dad should consider a 2022 Honda CB500X, it's such an easy bike to ride and a little lower seat height than the KTM 690. It's also been a super reliable bike for me so far. I'm just a bit younger than your Dad, I hope to be riding my CB500X for years to come. So want to do the CDT now, thanks for the inspiration!
Great video and I have only just discovered you I just wish we have such long routes here in the UK. Like your Dad Wyatt aged 70 I too learnt to ride to my abilities when out with groups of riders and I only have admiration for him when he had to get you to ride his bike. I have watched both good and bad riders ride over the mountain in the Isle of Man on public days during the TT and its not pretty when someone comes off because they were trying to keep with faster riders, Stay safe.
GREAT VIDEO and ADVENTURE! I've watched many of these OFF ROAD ADVENTURE ride videos. It seems like the Japanese bikes (all the makes) do very well and the European made BMW, KTM, Triumphs brands ALL breakdown. Ive been riding Honda and Suzuki for 37 years. The only major problem Ive ever had was on a 83 Suzuki, the head gasket went bad (under warranty repair). Im riding Yamaha right now, LOVE IT.
Awesome job. Since your dad isnt super experienced offroad. You guys should run the Idaho BDR...95% off road..buy man, fricken awesome and super easy riding the whole route. Done it twice solo and planning on doing it both directions next summer....solo as usual.
Havent finished watching yet, just feel i need to comment. Sorry that you went through the bad times. But dang, i wish i had that kind of time with my son. He lives too far away. Now back to the video..
This needs to be shared with Itchyboots. She is in Baja California and will be heading north to Canada on her way from Equator to Alaska, mostly off road.
When I first started watching this video and saw that you were both riding KTM‘s I wondered how far into the ride before something breaks down. They make awesome bikes when they’re running but reliability issues not so good. Enjoyed your video hope to see many more good luck.
On my to do list this year.. I ride a 1290 Super Adventure T .. I think it may be a little big / heavy and a 690 or 790 may be easier to handle on parts of the ride . Suggestions? Any recommendations and check list advice appreciated.
I sincerely doubt this ride would be possible that time of year. Many of the passes you need to go through are buried in snow, even into the summer months.
We were running the Goldentyre GT723 for this trip. It is the only tire we run on our 690's. We were extremely happy with them in every condition we put them through.
Glad you enjoyed the video! We are using the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tents here. We had zero issues with durability even after basically living out of the tents for the duration of this ride. I'd say that just being conscious of how you pack the tent in your saddlebags (such as packing the poles and stakes separately from everything) can add to the longevity of the tent. I have continued to use this tent for backpacking and more motorcycle camping over the last couple years and it is still going strong.
A great video. Inspiring dreams. I am asking myself: will i have the skills and stamina to do it? And if i do, should i buy a Japanese bike? In a trip like this, a bike reliability is not a hypothetical question...
Glad you liked the video! If you want to really put on some miles every day, and you want to ride fairly hard, then I would say do a little bit of training leading up to this. It might not be necessary, but as you get toward the end of the trip, you're definitely going to be feeling the wear and tear on your body haha. Also, if you ever do it, don't be afraid to schedule in some rest days in some cool locations, like Jackson Hole or something. Bike prep was key for this trip, I don't think it matters too much what bike you have, so long as you know it inside and out and you trust it.
If we had not been forced to miss a few days of the route due to technical difficulties, it would have taken us about 19 days of riding. I would personally not want to do it much faster than that, but I know there are people who have done it in half that time. If I were to do it again, I'd take it a little slower and take it all in and just break up the longer days a bit. Check out GPS Kevin for the GPS tracks that we used. He has a great breakdown of the route split up day by day.
Awesome trip! Great documentary. I want to do this same trip but from Canada down, I live just north of the border crossing you ended at. How many days did it take you guys to complete it?
Everydaydude with the added challenge of taking the time to film it took a bit longer than it would normally. It took us 18 days of riding, but about 24 total days with the clutch failure we had.
I’ve ridden it twice and going back a third time on July 10th. You absolutely do not need all of the crap the guys are putting on the bikes. Buy the best tires you can afford, good tent and sleep pad and a good gps. I used a phone the first time and a garmin the second time and the garmin was 1000 times better.
Hey there, we used the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tents for this trip and they worked out perfectly. Glad you enjoyed the video! KLR's are awesome bikes too!
Hey guys.. FANTASTIC video!! And what trip.. I'm planning this with two friends of mine.. Interested to know what time of year you rode? And, would you have done it any differently knowing what you know now? Also, do you think it could be done North to South? Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Awesome to hear you are planning to do this trip as well. We started the trip at the end of August and rode through most of September. In all honesty, even with the couple random things that went wrong, we wouldn't have changed anything. All I can say is, just take the time up front to make sure your bike is dialed in, and you should be good to go. I am sure it would be just as fun from North to South. Just keep in mind you'll have to descend Fleecer Ridge if you ride it that way haha! Best of luck on your trip!
Hello....nice video and unforgettable adventure. I am from mexico. I am planning to do it. It is possible to have the route in GPX to load it on my gps. Do you know where I can find it. Regards Giovanni

Amazing adventure guys!!
What a great vlog. Great memories for you both. Hope to do the same one day.
Wish I could hit a 100k times like button to this video. I am going to watch this video one more time and again
We're happy to hear you enjoyed it! It's quite an inspirational story! Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Awesome job. Since your dad isnt super experienced offroad. You guys should run the Idaho BDR...95% off road..buy man, fricken awesome and super easy riding the whole route. Done it twice solo and planning on doing it both directions next summer....solo as usual.
Inspirational !!!
I was glad to know you answered my question about parts availability for KTM. Cable pull clutch might be the way to go
This was A M A Z I N G
Thanks so much for tuning in! It was an amazing trip indeed!
Awesome video! Thank you very much for sharing :)
Thank you for watching, William! We are so glad you enjoyed it. We're lucky to have Wyatt on our team to capture his journey!
Really awesome. Thank you.
We're so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for tuning in! It was an incredible trip!
Great video .....
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Great video
Got to love Ktm. First thing you do before you ride it ? Rebuild it !! 😂😂😂😂
A 5 day wait on parts! I’d a traded the SOB!
Has anyone done this ride in February and is it even possible?
I sincerely doubt this ride would be possible that time of year. Many of the passes you need to go through are buried in snow, even into the summer months.
Great video. Who’s GPX file did you follow? My wife and I will be doing the CD this summer.
Glad you enjoyed it! We followed the GPS Kevin Tracks. Enjoy the ride, it is truly awesome!
Such a great video! What tires were y'all running for this trip? Thanks for sharing!
We were running the Goldentyre GT723 for this trip. It is the only tire we run on our 690's. We were extremely happy with them in every condition we put them through.
This was amazing
Good stuff! Ya i really enjoyed watching.
We're happy to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Loved the video. What tents do you guys use in this clip? And how durable would you say they are?
Glad you enjoyed the video! We are using the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tents here. We had zero issues with durability even after basically living out of the tents for the duration of this ride. I'd say that just being conscious of how you pack the tent in your saddlebags (such as packing the poles and stakes separately from everything) can add to the longevity of the tent. I have continued to use this tent for backpacking and more motorcycle camping over the last couple years and it is still going strong.
What an awesome adventure! Who drove the van? Lol
Wyatt's mom drove the van. It was a family adventure!
How long did it take? Start to finish
Just stumbled upon this.... Fantastic. What communication system did you guys use?
Glad you enjoyed the video! We used the Cardo Packtalk Bold and it worked extremely well for us.
@@higherbasemedia Thanks.... That's the one I've been eyeing.
Just came across your video. I'm from Wyoming.. welcome. What tents did you guys use? Thanks. Great looking bike. I ride a 2008 klr650.
Glad your Dad recovered
Loved it
Which GPS did you guys use? Thanks for the video. Myself and 2 other 60 somethings are planiing on trying again net year
Why didn’t you start off by telling what kind of bikes you both are riding?
If you love motorcycling and you have that special son this video might make you feel emotional,
I know it did to me
How many days would it have taken w/out you clutch repair?
I ride 80 miles usually 100 in one day with a motorized Bicycle soaking up Miami traffic. My AMSOIL Decal is not as big to see it at 40 mph.
Hello....nice video and unforgettable adventure. I am from mexico. I am planning to do it. It is possible to have the route in GPX to load it on my gps. Do you know where I can find it. Regards Giovanni
Hi Giovanni, glad you enjoyed the video! We used the tracks from GPS Kevin which can be found on his website. They worked out flawlessly for us! Enjoy the ride!

What fairing kits did you go with?
On the 2014 690 we used the Rally Raid Evo 2 fairing kit, and on the 2008 690 we used the Alberto Dottori Rally fairing paired with a Safari tank.
@@higherbasemedia what were your thoughts on the two
@@bjwilliams6115 The Dottori Fairing kit is definitely more of a DIY approach to it. That being said, I did love my Safari tank. The Rally Raid setup is definitely a very well thought out and much more refined kit.
Great video - cool you could do this with your Dad. Ididn't see it anywhere so is it possible to list out the modifications you made to the KTM's? What components did you add? Thanks in advance.
Glad you enjoyed the video! We did a bunch of modifications to the KTM's. I will try to keep this as brief as possible haha!
