    We had a 9 Kw system installed in 2016 and added a Tesla Powerwall in 2018. The system runs the complete house and for about 9 months out of the year actually produces most times 200% of what we use. We also have two Tesla Model 3 cars and even with charging them, our utility bill is around $23 per month! Great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Enjoy your new system!

    My roof solar PV installation is now five years four months old! My time flies! Officially I have a 4kW installation, but peak output is normally 3.4kW on a good day. So it looks like your PV panels are more efficient than mine.

    When I was mining a couple years ago I had an app on my PC that detected when my solar array was making enough surplus power and enabled/disabled mining accordingly. That way I could forget all about it and it would do its thing.

    Nice, in the US there is a regulation of 3 ft (1m) on all sides of the install for the fire dept. But the fire Dept won't go on a roof under 3 stories. So I was limited on the only section facing south but had a bunch facing west. 34 panels 8K+ (2017)

      Four and a half thousand pounds all in. But I suspect half the cost was labour, and scaffolding hire. Thanks to SolaSave of High Wycombe for a competitive price and 3 days of fun :)

    • @JuliansShorts
      @JuliansShorts  3 года назад

      No freebies unfortunately, but solar is now as cheap as it'll ever be. The panels and inverter cost less than half the total system price.

  • @csongorvarga

    I have a Growatt inverter, and it also has an RS485 output. I am reading data directly off the inverter using MODBUS. I am pretty sure yours supports Modbus as well. I had success reading other Modbus clients using a ESP8266 and a TTL to RS486 board. So you could read data off the inverted live and turn your miners on and off automatically.

    I have a small 1kw which was already installed when I bought the house 5 years ago. I get 60 cents a kW for any power I put in to the grid. Most people here only get 12 cents now. My problem is it is so small I hardly ever see any reduction in my bill because the power is used up before it can go to the grid.
    First view and comment!

    • @JuliansShorts
      @JuliansShorts  3 года назад +4

      Wow, 60c/kWh is extremely generous - I'm looking at 4p per kWh from the energy company. So I'll be using most of the surplus electricity to run the miners. They're doing well today - I reckon they'll produce about $6 in crypto by sundown.

    I have the same Solis inverter, but didn't bother with WiFi, I got smart meter between my meter and the inverter and that smart meter has WiFi and shows instant data: power generated and power used by the house and power imported from grid. Entire smart meter kit is sold as: "Geo Solo PV III", it has smart meter (proper one, wired, not some CT clamps), a wireless portable display unit to show the data and a hub for internet connectivity.

    • @JuliansShorts

      My next move is to get a smart meter. That way I can get paid for exported energy and use the cheap overnight electricity (for mining probably :)

    As soon as I saw the solar panels, I thought to myself; "I bet he'll use the energy to mine bitcoins"!

      $8 mined today. At that rate, ROI is 2 years. Of course that won't actually happen - today was wall-to-wall sunshine and Scrypt mining is crazy profitable (Dogecoin etc.) at the moment.

      I purchased the whole system from SolaSave of High Wycombe. The panels and inverter came from a trade supplier who don't have prices on their website. The 380W panels are listed at £135 (including VAT) on Bimble Solar's website: www.bimblesolar.com/380W-JA-solar
