Thanks for the honesty, on the problems you had living with it... Your ride is awesome 😎.. Enjoy it.. Till they come for liquefied dinosaur reprocessing machines !!!
Hey gear heads. I put one on my BB basically stock 402 72 Chevelle. Had a few issues but was straightened out with Holley tech and me finding issues I created. I locked out the distributor so it controls timing. It’s na but had a big came for the sound. With a carb drivability would have been a headache. Once the sniper learned it was amazing! Fired right up, no hesitation, no bogg, no loading up & no fouled plugs. You stomp the pedal and instant GO. Liked it so much bough 2 more for my BB impala & 89 dually tow vehicle. Super satisfied!! Looking into getting back up ecu’s
Great video, I shared some of the same issues you originally had. I was about to chuck that EFI so far I would never find it again. however, like you, I contacted Holley and got some great help. The two most problematic issues I had were RF noise, and rotor phasing. Those two issues were very difficult to resolve without their help. The EFI will get a ton of noise (RF) from the air cleaner lid if it is metal. You have to ground the air cleaner to a good ground. Lastly, I ended up tossing a perfectly good MSD Pro-Billet Distributor and replacing it with the Holley Hyperspark. In my opinion don't waste anytime with another distributor. Note: I also used the EFI to control timing, which is also part of the reason rotor phasing was so important for the installation. GOOD Video. My car 1955 using Tanks inc. EFI ready fuel tank and their plumbing kit.
I have the Sniper EFI and nothing but issue after issue. Had it running perfect and now no spark signal to CDI box from ECU ...I wish I had never heard of it. Selling it all..throwing Sniper Unit in garbage and going back to carburetor. One visit to the Holley forums and you can see just how many people are having trouble with these things. Never again..my car ran great on carburetor for 46 years and I can t wait to switch back.
These all in one units is convient(ecu/sensors) thats for sure... outside of quality control, theres a reason why OEMs mounted thier ECU off engine, other than the sheer size of it, even thought it still in the engine compartment. My thoughts are on engine heat soak, like any carburetor, this TBI unit will take the blunt of it, and thats bad for any centralized electronics, i would rather replace a body part(sensor) and than having to replace the brain(ecu).
Good info on this EFI system. I'm wondering if the "factory refurbished" is the one to get. It has a lower price, and techs need to check it out. My main concern is how big can the camshaft be. I have a 292 hyd with a 108 lobe sep on a 355 sbc
Hi! Have you done any type of tuning on your sniper before or after this video? Did you do anything with your closed loop and learning % on your device? Any Info would help 😊 Thank you
I’m glad the video was helpful, I have changed the learning percentage to 10 percent and adjusted the ramp down to slow the idle rise on start up. I also have my cruise AFR set to 14.5 at cruise. That is all that I have done so far. I would like to hook it up to a laptop sometime soon though to see if I can make it better.
I have been contemplating going this route on one of my cars. how many miles have you driven the care with each of the thottle body units. debating if this will be good for a daily driver application
It is a common problem when you install the sniper on older vehicles. The ignition is turned on my contacts that are inside the ignition. So you lose power for a split second when the ignition goes from one contact to the next. I simply wired the relay to the power off the ignition wire and then set the relay to 10 seconds. It has a ground and a wire that goes to power the sniper. Pretty simple to install really👍
Please loose the background music while you're talking , very annoying IMO. Thanks for the review . Nice Holley came through after warranty for the ECU fix. customer satisfaction makes a BIG difference !
How long was the learning process for the the unit? The one in my "57 seems to be running quite rich and the smell of gas is extremely strong while driving (checked for leaks and did not find any). I only have about an hour and a half on it and not much of that has been at 160 CTS or over so learning hasn't kicked on for very long. Thanks for the relay info because I am having the "losing power while cranking" issue as well. Do you mind sharing how you wired that?
It did not take long for the learning. Maybe a few 20 minute rides. It did change a little bit after that but pretty minor. Does your AFR fluctuate much. If it running rich it should show you there. I wired the relay directly to the batter and triggered it off a positive from the fuse panel inside.
When I did my research I read that you should change out the fuel side first and after everything runs good to do the spark side. I Have kept the Unilite distributor with vacuum advance for now. Everything is running well so I have not spent the money yet to upgrade my distributor. Have you done this? What did it cost? Was it hard?
@BigRed's Barn I did it all at the same time it cost me more than others because big block bucks are not as common as everything else so my distributor was substantially more than the others at the time.
@BigRed's Barn and it was fairly straight forward phasing the rotor was kinda weird but easy when I had it all together I had Mick LePiane tune it for me and that made a massave difference from the self learn mode.
She had an old AFB Carter 600. I’ll have to do a video of all of the updates I have done to her soon. I did record some of what I did back then. I hope to see you out and about as well. Do you go to any of the cruises around here? I typically go to the sumner cruise and sometimes Puyallup.
Yes, we have done the Puyallup and Sumner cruises. My car was acting up both times we went. One of our cars in the group broke down at sumner and had to limp it home. What rear end and gears are you running in the 56? I'm seriously thing about putting in a gear vendors overdrive behind my TH350.
@@coolweldor1 Our '56 has what appears to be the original rear end with 3.73 gears. I have thought about the same thing as ours revs up pretty high going down the freeway. I have a 700R4 in my truck and I think the cost of the 700R4 swap or the GV OD unit is pretty close to the same. Let me know if you get the GV OD.
Will do. I have way too much into my TH350 to give up on it and put a different Trans in her. At least with the GV, it will turn it into a 6 speed. And as a bonus, I can turn it off. I recently had rear end problems and was stuck with the decision of building the stock 55p or putting a 9" in. My budget was just shy of doing the 9" so I put a new eaton posi, bearings, gears, and new Dutchman axles in. The only part of the rear that is stock is the housing. My old axles were so soft that when we pressed the new bearings on, it was slicing the shaft. Once I broke the rear end in, I swapped out the axles. Kind of wished I did that to begin with, but that's how life works.
@@coolweldor1 I was watching some videos about the GV OD and there are so many models and different options it's crazy. I would like to add a posi to the BelAir for sure though. Sounds like you have a good car. I hope to see you this summer:)
I am sorry to hear that. I chatted with someone of Facebook and they were in the same boat as you and they ended up taking it to a tuner. They stated that it made all of the difference in the world. might be worth considering if you have not done that already.
Based on the comments and your experience Id say its NOT worth it. Its running fine now UNTIL something fails which it likely will. Id rather have the ease and ability to repair a carb TBH.. Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU, most states of the USA and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... Beautiful car Big Red. I noticed the dash trim is from a "55. Did you change it up or did the person you got from do it?
The person before me did that. Personally I prefer the bow ties vs the rectangles😁

Thank you and I appreciate your input. I will look at that for my next video. 😊
Some of those things should be engineered in the ecu. Like a factory one is. Factory ones are not that sensitive. More robust.
Is the pump really loud?
Since I installed the in tank pump you can barley hear it when car isn’t running and you can’t hear it at all when the car is running.

You commented your running a Mallory Unilite distributor. Why are you still running a ballist resister? That’s part of a points system ignition.
The 56 is bitchin. Interested to know where the padded dash came from.
It was that way when I bought it. Based on the research I did, it was a factory option😁

I did not put a baffle in the tank. I believe the fuel tank is the original.
All of that time and money for 1980s throttle-body technology. Carburetors are simpler and cheaper.
I agree that Carburetors are cheaper and simpler.

Why is the gen ( or is that oil pressure) red light on?
That is the generator light. When the restoration happened , they upgraded to an alternator. I just have not traced down the wire and fixed it yet.
