Fun fact: In the Voodoo religion, there is a great spirit known as Baron Samedi who is described as an obnoxious womanizer who enjoys drinking, smoking, and wearing sunglasses. His sphere is resurrection, and Voodoo followers call upon him to heal those who are dying. Also, his wife is another great spirit named Mamam Brigitte.
I think the graffiti could also symbolize the Black Shuck from celtic folklore. The Black Shuck is a black hound that usually has red eyes and symbolizes death. The graffiti could be a subconscious warning that the Voodoo Boys intend to sacrifice V
I think it's important to mention that the black dog song was found in johnny's belongings after his raid on arasaka tower iirc; but it is very important to keep in mind when analyzing the lyrics of black dog to keep in mind it's right before his massive suicide run
True. The Black Dog song is quite old by the time we get to it in 2077. And like you said, it was created possibly to reference a different event (AHQ bombing) but it's crazy how the lyrics still make sense when looked at through the lense of 2077. Almost like the theme of life in Night City just keeps repeating itself for each new generation.
The song itself actually has some pretty interesting lore about it as well. It was one of the last song performed by Samurai before the assault on Arasaka Plaza. That no actual recording of it existed. Save for a very corrupted rough recording by one of the survivors of the event. This led to several attempts of cleaning up the recording. Until one of the former members of Samurai. Gave the company that was trying to clean up the song. A test recording of it performed by Kerry, instead of Johnny. Like in the final performance. Which is the lore reason behind why the singer of the song has a much raspberry voice closer to Kerry, then what Johnny and, by extension, Keanu Reeves could do despite offering to do it. Wish I could cite the Wiki that goes into more of this. but someone went in and cleaned it all up. So a lot of the. Uncertified bits have been deleted.
the voodoo boys knew about silverhand being on the relic, and wanted to contact alt through it, that's why they made a deal with evelyn to spy around yorinobu's penthouse in konpeki
It would be kind of interesting to explore the game more, because if the black dog is in your head, then you saw it right before effectively the first time the relic starts throwing up errors. Assuming you kind of play in order. I have noticed that as the story progresses you notice it a bit more. So perhaps it's a visual representation with how much Johnny is infecting your brain. The other thing I noticed is V's tone starts changing a bit and their speech pattern changes slightly. Like at the beginning V doesn't really say Uh-huh and after a few relic blips, you start using "Uh-huh" a lot more.
@relaxedswede Don't the Voodoo boys want to get to Alt? Silverhand and Alt knew each other. Maybe that has something to do with why they put grafitti of the black dog there?
@@indicaink black dogs are kinda common in mythology, tho. Celtic Mythology has one (or two i think?) as does Norse. Basically, big black wolf like things scared us, so we ether took them as our own (made them protection symbols) or made them warning signs ('see a big black dog, yer gona die' type stuff...which was often true, as it was a hungry wolf, not a dog) plus, there are at least two factions within the VDB's. the main Pacifica faction (in the church) and the Dogtown faction. Dogtown VDB's dont agree with the Pacifica faction. they don't want to touch the Blackwall, want to stay hidden from the AI's past the Wall. Pacifica's faction want to push thru the Wall and contact the Wild AI's (who i think they see and 'the New Loa of the net')
Could definitely fit into the the themes of not wanting to fade away, Johnny wanted to stick it to the corps, he fought to survive up till the end, and as an ai fought to reunite with Alt to bring her away from the dangerous people around her. But, he was stuck in a loop and without a way to free her. Stuck in a body meant to be dead, decaying as he unwillingly takes over. He encourages to go out with a bang, since they are on borrowed time. I think Johnny relates himself to a figure like the Black Dog - might be why he made it a song as he relates to the wolf hunting after those who hunt Alt and himself. Lyrics I point to what I believe mean certain reason behind the words are: "A blind man lost, in the streets. A pattern here I need to see" Johnny knew something was wrong, things were happening in the city, but at the time he didn't know why - but he was determined to find out. "Keep returning keep trying to leave" He wanted to leave the city, but something kept bringing him back like an urge he couldn't shake. "Got a bad feeling I need to feel" He knows staying in Night City will try to break his will, but he's determined to face it. Black Dog runs at my side no end in sight. A constant lingering feel of threat or shadow following him like a ghost, it's unknown if it will cease feeling that way (fun fact in a Harry Potter movie the kids during class talk about a similar Black Dog or wolf that forbodes doom or death" when they attempt to read tea or something). "The city sleeps but in my mind there's a knot that won't unwind" The city like he was once are "blind" they don't see how the corps have taken over their lives and city, and Johnny feels that needs to change - to be fixed. "The Hunter becomes what he hunts" Arasaka were hunting after Blackhand, Johnny and the gang - Arasaka soon became the Hunted as Johnny wasn't wanting to remain prey to corpos and went after them instead. "The escape and the chase is now one. Run, run" Where once he would struggle if to flee, now he understands the way to be free in his mindset is to fight against the corpos, hence why the song probably goes more aggressive in tone at these points, to signify the need to free oneself and fight. The song lyrics take similar meaning I believe throughout till: "In concrete canyons, squinting neon eyes. Black dog beside me, like shadow needing light" Johnny's band and impact left a call to spark future fights against the corps, they were not going to be the last as Johnny lit the flame and sent the message. And I believe the rest of the following lyrics portray Johnny's endless struggles and fights he felt at the time against Corpos, with the shadow of the end feeling close before they struck at Arasaka Tower. Sorry for this long comment I listen to this song a lot and the lyrics, it feels to me just a Johnny explains to V about why he fights against the corpos for what they did to people and the city, why he can't stop and his struggles to keep Alt safe, it all feels to relate to the song.
I find it interesting that if Johnny is the black dog that there is also a kind of urban legend if you will about sleep deprived truckers or people who drive for extended periods of time hallucinating and thinking they see a black dog dart across the road. Sounds like ol' Silverhand. LOL
You know what it's even "funnier"? That actually happened to me.. more than 15 years ago... A black dog run across the street outside of city... It was a hallucination because I hit the dog. The dog vanished into the night... but my car's bumper told the truth that it did happen... So.. sometimes the black dog is actually real :)
Thanks for this great video ! One thing I've always liked about Black Dog, aside from having been written right before AHQ bombing is that is truly encapsulate Johnny's death wish and mental health, the black dog image being often used as a metaphore for depression (Churchill popularised the term but didn't coined it). Someone already said it in the comments, black dogs are psychopomp animals in many cultures, omens of death, spirits guiding souls to the realm of the deads. "Black dog in my head, guiding me to the end" can ring in 2077 to V like Johnny is their black dog all along their journey (being quite litteraly in their head, too). This may be my favorite Samurai song for all these reasons.
Everytime black dog plays on the radio im always jamming out too lol they really went all out on the music for this game and all of samurai songs are bangers
The graffiti at the Voodoo Boys' base of operations has always stood out to me, but I couldn't quite figure out why. But along with what you said, its presence there seems out of the ordinary; it does not fit in with their usual trademarks.. Or at least, not what outsiders would think of them using. As pointed out by V while observing Evelyn's virtu's (the ones collected by Judy), it is quickly deduced that the Voodoo Boys are known to use Veve markings; religious symbology affiliated with Haitian vodou. This would make sense, because the members hailed from Haiti in 2062, after the fall of their country due to natural disaster. Now the black dog marking itself, as you addressed it, puts forth some interesting implications. The tarot V finds throughout Night City is a vague reading of their journey in their pursuit against the racing clock which is their life nearing its end as they know it. We know that these symbols only V and Johnny's engram can see, the visual glitching and flickering of each tarot symbol gives that away, a side effect of the prototype Relic in V's head. If we (the players as V) can scan and examine the tarot signs and recognize them as 'visual glitches' or corrupted Relic data, but NOT the black dog symbol, what does this mean? It means that this symbol is real, but I think carries just as much significance, at least to the Voodoo Boys. Their goal in Cyberpunk 2077 is seeking protection from what they perceive as the inevitable fall of the Blackwall, and the calamity which would follow after that; the great flood of rogue AIs once again unleashed upon the Net. But Alt Cunningham, one of the legendary netrunners of Night City, who seemingly 'transcended' from human to such a powerful, almost untouchable figure in the Deep Net. They might have lost their gods from Haiti, but they envisioned a different one in Alt, seeking guidance and enlightenment from one of the world's best netrunners. I believe that this symbol is not only meant to represent Johnny, as some sort of apostle-like figure, considering that they know of the shared history and connection before Alt's 'transcendence', but also the 'sacrificial lamb' in which Johnny's engram would use as a proxy. (Yes, I remember your earlier response and took interest in that statement) I really like the idea of Placide being used as a.. Pawn or 'conduit' in their mission, expecting Johnny to be their emissary. Maybe not to act as Alt's physical vessel as I was implying as a possibility on your Rogue AI Mastermind video, but to house Johnny's AI to contact Alt. This would help keep all matters in house, and keep the world outside unaware of their true intentions. This plan would go well in line with how the Voodoo Boys operate on a whole. What works against THIS plan is V's placement within the story, and while it goes against their initial plans, or what I'm speculating, it almost produces their desired effect in this stage of their master plan (the only part that DID work out for them in my opinion). The only problem here is that now they have a loose end in V, who they might try to double cross them. Considering how much information on the Relic was seemingly withheld from him by Maman Brigitte (he even failed to recognize the Relic while scanning V's system), it is possible that large parts of the master plan were not shared with everyone in the Voodoo Boys, and I don't think it's accidental. He might be considered Brigitte's right hand, but he is still in a way an expendable asset. Huscle can be replaced, especially in Cyberpunk, but their master cannot. I mean, either that, or they perceive the Relic activating as a variation of body possession; accomplishments feats in mad science where it was believed only magic could resolve. Somewhat reminiscent in the belief of their Haitian ancestors..? Who knows.
I was looking around in Dogtown and a random NPC came to me and asked for a password and then pulled out a knife... Safe to say they won't uncrumple themselves after getting a knuckle sandwich
Interesting... the same graffiti can be found in Dogtown near a place where Voodoo Boys live, and for some reason those red eyes remind me of the rabid rogue AIs that control Songbird... And unlike Tarot Card "graffiti", this graffiti isn't glitching.
So if Johnny is the black dog is he destined to unleash the rouge ai on the world an destroy it or is he there to protect the world as he found a true companion in v like a normal dog would do? Makes me think why Johnny wanted to go with the ai an why Johnny said “ saving my energy for a final big bang “
Good insight! I personally can't tell yet as Johnny's engram does change to more align with V's way of thinking by the end. Now imagine Johnny's engram in someone like Maelstrom or a VDB who really wants to reach past the Blackwall. Johnny's personally could change over time and help them bring about the rogue ai invasion. But I personally like Silverhand so it's hard to see him as the cause of such a crazy error. My personal bias aside, you make a great point!
@@relaxedswedethat’s freakin horrifying if he ended up in maelstrom 😂 an I guess it’s a good thing you kill the vdb cause they did take a part of Johnny to reach “ alt “
I would have to say it is an either-or kind of thing... If you consider letting him take over will he continue going after alt, or will you dismiss the one thing that could possibly stop AI by getting rid of Johnny silverhand the only connection to the wall you can either speed up the inevitable or wait it out to fight. This doesn't mean it will happen in either case there could be a line of story that changes depending on what choices you make at the end of this.
It could be...I mean, there are a lot of changes made from Cyberpunk RED to 2077. The original Hellhound anti-personnel program was symbolized by a huge , black, metal wolf. It's eyes glowed white. Not red. But CDPR could have changed that...hard to say.
I honestly think there are two things happening at once in the game. There are cats, like the one we see in Pacifica with people giving it food and worshipping it. We see one outside Victor's clinic (Perhaps the same cat?) and then V can also adopt a cat I believe. Then we have the Bakeneko. You can see it in the Takemura scene in this video. But also in the ending of the game as you follow Misty to the rooftop. It's a sign of death and acts as a reminder to the player that the clock is ticking and you are, indeed, close to dying. That's at least my working theory so far.
The cats we see in 2077 are descendent of the rat catching cats. They were bred specifically to be fur less (due to the rats carying the fleas that caused the old plagues like the black death) No fur, no fleas. Didn't want another plague, especially as many remembered the Carbon Plague back in 2020 (their 2020, not our 2020) The cats were set to do the job of keeping the rat population in check, which they did well. In fact, think they did it TOO well, since now the mayors don't seem to want them around so much. The megabuildings cats are some of the few ones left after the mayor (could be Holt, or the mayor before him) started to get harsher on them. Remember reading about one megabuilding rezzie who wanted to 'adopt' their buildings cat after it had cleared the building of rats, and they were told they could NOT do so, infact, would be fined if they did. Which probably explains 'feed teh cat' and how we ended up with Nibbles, who is a descendant of Rache Bartmoss's cat. That cat we hear meowing as Johnny lies bleeding out in the ally at the Hammer. That's Rache's cat. Mike says he survived the attack on Rache's place and his out in the city. And, as cats do....he fathered a whole lot of other kitty's. Nibbes is one of his descendants. You can only properly scan Nibbles. You can't scan the Bakeneko at the Warehouse for the float. At least, I've never been able to fully scan it. I've not been able to scan the cats elsewhere ether, least in 1.61. So the cats we see around the city are different cats. They added a few other cats recently in 2.1 the easiest to find being the Pacifica rollercoaster cat from 2.1 She's sat in the ticket booth at the gate to the coaster, and if you place cat food in her bowl, her eyes glow blue and she opens the safe for you, it has a little cash. I think she's Blue Eyes pet cat and spys on the Voodoo's lol. And buys cat food from kind hearted chooms who place it in the bowl, so she can keep her vigil on the Pacifica Voodoo's (who have recently split from the Dogtown Voodoo's, over Brigitte's desire to migrate to the old Net)
This video ignores perhaps the most obvious explaining of what Black Dog is Black Dog is an euphemism for depression used since Roman times and used by many notable people but most especially Winston Churchill. Finding the Black Dog song sheet in Johnny's Body and all across night city is most likely evidence of Johnny's mental state when bombing Arasaka tower and the general situation of the populace living in such miserable conditions

I just went through the PL quest "The Damned." Before Slider's room, there is a place with a shard with a description of Slider's health and black dog graffiti. This graffiti has red eyes and is popular with Voodoo boys. Maybe this is a reference to Slider? He mentions that he has eyes and ears everywhere.
I see what you mean. It's possible. My interpretation of what he said was that he hacks into devices and databases and that's how he has "eyes and ears" everywhere. I'm thinking that if the graffiti was truly a tool for Slider the VDB would not allow it inside their church and netrunner den

You can see a cat during the conversation with Oda as well. It's sitting on one of the burned out cars in the background.
The cats we see in 2077 are descendent of the rat catching cats.
They were bred specifically to be fur less (due to the rats carying the fleas that caused the old plagues like the black death)
No fur, no fleas. Didn't want another plague, especially as many remembered the Carbon Plague back in 2020 (their 2020, not our 2020)
The cats were set to do the job of keeping the rat population in check, which they did well.
They added a few other cats recently in 2.1 the easiest to find being the Pacifica rollercoaster cat from 2.1
She's sat in the ticket booth at the gate to the coaster, and if you place cat food in her bowl, her eyes glow blue and she opens the safe for you, it has a little cash.
(sorry about the too many posts. my tablet got stuck and i thought it had not posted at all. Deleted the spam)
Don't worry about it, Choom!
These things happen to the best of us! @@silverbane8065
I don't know if it matters but in Panam storyline she send you a photo with a black dog? just wanted to share ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just looked it up and saw the black dog in the pic that Panam sends us. Looks a good boy!
This video ignores perhaps the most obvious explaining of what Black Dog is
Black Dog is an euphemism for depression used since Roman times and used by many notable people but most especially Winston Churchill. Finding the Black Dog song sheet in Johnny's Body and all across night city is most likely evidence of Johnny's mental state when bombing Arasaka tower and the general situation of the populace living in such miserable conditions
That's a fair criticism tbh
iv done it on ps5 you should too😄
How about Solomon Reed?! 😅😆😁🤣
Solomon Reed would be the confused dog of Night City

Hmm, I usually do my runs on a PS5. I wonder if this would be possible to do on a console...
His eyes and ears are the city's cameras
