RIP Chris Darnell...such a terribly sad accident...and condolences to his family and friends...and all that witnessed the event.
Unfortunately when such an on the edge specialty event such as a jet truck come unravelled...it does so in such a terribly shocking way 😢😢😢😢
Can only hope that Chris did not suffer throughout the accident.
A very sad raise of the glass to Chris from Sydney Australia!!!!!!
soundgarden will never be the same since chris darnell died.
it's too hard to tell how he could have passed on. his vehicle rotated but tyres were still on the ground and it looks at though he could have survived
Just terrible. I saw him 6 days prior at the Hill AFB airshow.
Rip Chris and truck there where the best truck and driver ever seen by the world and his family
Tragic, I've enjoyed this show in years past. Excellent coverage. My heart goes out to the family and those touched by this loss.
I grew up with this it hurts me bad
The pyro show had nothing to do with this incident, the jet truck had a severe failures before the fireballs on field. On other footage there is a loud pop sound and debris, could be jet engine compressor failure thats sprayed metal into fuel tanks and tyres. The chute deployment happens are the same time so maybe the driver knew something was wrong. Very sad incident.
Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering if it was a pyrotechnics show as well. Just looked like his engine exploded right before he entered that cloud.
I agree that the tire failure may have been audible, but at that distance the sound would not have reached the crowd or the camera mics until the truck was much farther down the airstrip. The pop sounds were likely from the pyrotechnics, which were fired off camera well before the truck reached them.
Yeah, he definitely had at least one engine flame out on him and a chute deployed before he lost front end control. I thought maybe he lost a front tyre due to debris from a grenaded engine, the debris could have also injured the driver and caused the steering deviation, but I would have hoped he had protection from that kind of incident. It's a sad state of affairs though, that's for sure.
The pop is either one of three things, the tire, the chute catching the wind, or the engine compressor blowing up
thanks, whenever I want to know the real story, I always rely on random youtubers for first hand knowledge.
RIP Chris Darnell we met at Lebanon Valley Dragway back years of 2012,2013,2014 at events of Night of Fire. I was at time part of Lebanon Valley Dragway Track Safety Rescue Team. Great guy to meet always took time to go over all safety procedures and explain great detail about them. To Darnell family my prayers goes out. Chris thank you sir rest easy friend.
This is new to me. So do you know how long him and his Dad had been doing this? TY i wondered about all that heat on the tires too. This is so sad.

Thank you, Chris. For all the memories you’ve been paramount in creating for all these families over the years. Yep
That is such a sad loss to our airshow community. Prayers to everyone involved.
I took my mom and dad to an airshow about 25 years ago and the shockwave truck was there racing a plane. My mom, who is now passed, and always so subdued, saw this truck and she actually let out a squeal of delight. I was so surprised that this truck caused my mom to break out of her shell.
RIP mom
Our mom loves my brother so so much😢
R.I.P to the team of shock wave and the family members and friends of the family members as well and my condolences go out big at this time
I loved watching him run this is so sad. Rest In Peace
Agreed...R.I.P........but completely senseless............
But the Shockley family will run again that because of their new peterbilt shockwave jet truck that they bought that’s because of their old one crashing at an airshow on September 7, 2008 and it was shown on April 17, 2020 and it and it’s still very alive driver Kent Shockley will both be real forever for many many years! -(not funny -Darnell meant darn it!😢😭😿😔😞)
Rest in Peace. He lost his life doing something that he loved and something that has brought joy to so many over the years. Condolences from UK.
The really amazing part is they've never had a accident like this ever. The thousands of safe runs theyve made in that truck show how professional and dialed in the crew is. Any vehicle weighing 10,000 lbs going over 300 mph is on the verge of disaster every time. God speed.
I commented on another video the following.. there was a very similar crash to this by the same truck, I think the year before, but the truck did not barrel roll, it merely spun around on 4 wheels gradually slowing to a stop. The driver was lucky that time; not nearly so this time
Rest in Easy Chris, we got it from here.
You May Be Gone But You Will Never Be Forgotten.
For those that never had the chance to meet Chris, he was down to earth and a caring person.
He loved what he did and he did it well.
Very heartbreaking. Condolences to the Shockwave family, crew and fans. R.I.P. Chris
RIP This was an amazing man and I won’t forget the day in 2nd grade when he came to my classroom and told us about his cool job and i am just devastated that this has happened
Love&prayers for the family.
R i p Brother. May God bless your soul, and give comfort and strength to the family and friends.
Condolences to the Darnell family and crew
Really sad to hear about this. I didn't know Chris. I got out of work early Friday and went to Bdubs for a drink and some food. Ended up sitting next to Chris by random chance. We talked about what we each did for a living. He showed me pictures of his truck and videos of what they did. Along with pictures of his family. We bought each other a round of drinks. Talked for maybe an hour. He seemed like a really genuine guy. I remember one of the last things he said was "My buddies at the show are telling me to hurry up. it's free drinks and food" So I said "Well what the hell are you still doing here!?"
Rest in peace, man. I was glad our paths crossed in this life, even if only for a moment.
Prayers for him and the family a terrible loss RIP
RIP. Saw his show at Hill AFB in Utah just last weekend. Unfortunate that I witnessed his last show before his death.
Very sad... but going out at 350mph in a ball of flames... that's an exit most people can only dream of. Salute..!!
agree
In a situation like that either things went horribly wrong or you went out doing exactly what you wanted to be doing.
Seen this report up here in Canada.. Condolences to the Darnell family.
My utmost condolences, and prayers for Chris and his family, I've had the honor to see him run several times 🙏 😢
Prayers ? Lmfao.
Prayers for the family😓
My friends and I were at the Airshow in Battlecreek MI. When this happen. So sad and very scary to see this so close up. Our thought and prayers go out to the family. R.I.P Chris Darnell
So sorry to the family and friends.
Of the driver. To All the field staff that helped that day God Bless you All.
I saw this truck in the late '80s in Union Grove Wisconsin, we were in the pit and when those engines fired up it was absolutely unbelievable to watch that thing go down the track and then when we got a chance to look at each other we all had soot on our faces, so sad to see that happen such a brave young man my prayers for your family sir
Wasn't the Shockwave driven by a guy named Les Shockey or Shockley back then? I think it was the same era as Roger Gustin's Lava jet car and The Green Mamba.
Heartbreaking...Thoughts and Prayers to the Shockwave crew and families....Rest Easy Chris...🥺
RIP Chris…prayers to all the family and friends
I was fortunate enough to have seen him many many years in a row at the field of flight in battle creek as my grandfather volunteers for the event. Chris was such an amazong guy to meet
I have known of this jet truck and driver for many years. My sincerest prayers and condolences to his family and friends. What a horrible way to go. God bless you all, and remember that although too soon, he was doing what he loved, which is what many of us will not be able to say.
My daughter and I have seen his show several times. So sorry this happened.
I was there his tire exploded
I think those tires are normal truck tires that are shaved, x-rayed and balanced
The fireworks explosion on the lane exploded the right rear tire, resulting in a 300mph tailspin😮💨
@@1SWEETSERENADER yes thank someone knows what hapoed
Les Shockley was the man who created this piece of engineering marvel & had a lot of latest safe features. Rip to the driver & condolences to the family & friends of The Shockwave family.
Shockley family does not own the truck. They sold it many years ago.
@@ronhublimo5220 I didn't say they owned it still I said Les Built the original Shockwave 🙄
"Engineering marvel ", ....?
Really?
To me?
The whole idea seems silly?
Like: What a dumb thing to do?
Put a jet engine on a truck and run it?
It was only a matter of time before SOMEONE got themselves killed in it.
@@troybarrett3434 correct and that was a long time ago, yes it had safety features but when a turbine engine has a blade failure , it sends a chain of events that you can't plan for. I'm not sure they will ever find the cause since the NTSB won't be involved to spend the money on metalurgic tests on the engines. But I'm guessing that it was an engine failure of the highest magnitude due to turbine fan blade rupture.
But I am glad that Shockley family got a new clone of the truck and will keep it for many many years
rip chris darnell, such a talented driver and it breaks my heart knowing anything can happen in a split second

Prayers goes out to his family
My son and I watched this truck earlier this year in Belle Chase, La. During the Blue Angels Air Show. Its hard to believe a truck that size goes that fast. I hope he didn't feel anything and was unconscious when she burned. God bless his family !!
It really doesn’t weigh much. Its not like an actual tractor that pulls trailers.
@@user-pm8hs6xv5p really!? I figured he just hooked up his hauler and pulled all his equipment around with some rig!? Thanks for clarifying that buddy. Best Regards
Deboss Garage (youtube channel) did a nice video on it. It only weighs like 7k pounds and is really just a truck body on a specially built frame. They were interviewing one of the owners (Neal Darnell) and he said it was built more like a race car. Apparently, the truck they featured did crash in 2008 and was totally destroyed leaving the driver without a scratch. So, the roll cage cabin did its job. I can only assume (wish) the forces involved in this latest crash were enough to take him out quickly.
He described the engines and where they got them and mentioned the fact that spare parts were not available for them anymore. So, what it sounded like, is they scavenged parts from spare engines when needed (just my interpretation of what was said - I could be wrong). He talked about how dependable and bulletproof they were. Well, I'll add that yes, they are tough engines, but turbines can let go for the littlest reasons and need to be adequately maintained. Now I can't possibly know well they were maintained, but it would be an area they'll likely look into. They could be well maintained, but something very small got overlooked. It's risky any way you look at it.
I've seen these trucks perform many times. Very sad!
Prayers to the family
Rip chris darnell makes me cry because he was my age and born the same year I was 40 years ago my thoughts and prayers go to his family you won't be forgotten
May he Rest In Peace
He died when he was doing his favorite thing, what a brave man
RIP 🙏❤️🇳🇴😢
It takes a very special tire to go 300+ mph. The stresses on those tires are extreme.
Exactly. Very little friction at that speed. The truck would be barely touching the tarmac. May Chris rest in everlasting peace ✝️.
That’s why they replace every tire after 3 or 4 runs.
@@xHustlin247x I don't think it was a tire failure. I think an engine gave way and punctured the tire(s). I wouldn't be blaming the tires until we know more.
Those are air craft tires
@@harpoon_bakery162 correct and they do have another video I believe on the truck that shows the engine blew up shooting pieces into fuel tank
Wow, this was a really good report. Even the guy explaining what's going on with the truck in the video was pretty accurate. Chris was a legend, died what he loved. Doesn't make it less sad.
1:49 It appears to be the disintegrating tire pieces started leaving the rim,. This incident likely was due to tire failure. At this instant the driver deployed the braking chute so I think he knew something was going bad.
1:55 A tire carcass can clearly be seen,
I have watch lots of RUclips videos of him and really enjoyed it and it's sad to hear that he lost his life in what he enjoyed and entertaining people,I can't give this video a thumbs up
praying for his family who was there 🙏 ❤️
I had seen the Shockwave several times at Raceway Park in Old Bridge, NJ. One time I was volunteer pit crew for one of the wheelstanders and watched it come down at the top end of the track while I was hooking up to tow the wheelstander back to the pits. It was an awesome experience to see the truck come flying by us in the shutdown area. My condolences to all of Team Shockwave and their families.
RIP 🙏 AND THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES
going 300mph in any ground vehicle is nothing short of suicide
Look at top fuel dragster drivers. They haven’t died in a while
@@ryan_team1420.. True, but still a very dangerous activity..
Some family members and I just saw these same performers at the Fort Wayne, IN Air Show in Early June. This is very sad.
So sad to hear that, tears running
Well i give my condolences to Chris may you R.I.P and your family
Rest In Peace Chris Darnell, I saw him just last week at the Warriors over the Wasatch show, hard to believe this happened to him
Rest In Peace Joe Ranft from getting into a bad real car crash accident in 2005
Negative. The tires blew. The debris off the tires and aluminum wheels shredded the sides of the motor causing a catastrophic failure and explosion. Those jet engines have fuel lines on the outside . There was a problem when he pulled the shute early before the tires blew from what I'm seeing.
The right third end blew up due to a cracked leaking fuel line, blasting the tires off, causing her to veer left .and we do know that and once the investigation is complete you all will know as well.
Just like both of lightning McQueen’s back tires both blew up in cars (2006)
All the years he did what he loved.
RIP CHRIS.

Saw Shock Wave a few years ago at Cayuga ,Very sad ,My thought’s and prayers are with Chris Darnell’s family and the whole Shock Wave team
Rest in Peace.
Quick question - I have been to several air shows over the years, was it the same truck with the same driver in all the air shows nationwide?
(IF so, then we didn't know that and that is amazing!)
RIP MAN 🤦🏾♂️🕊 Such an awesome performer
My sincere condolences to the friends and family of the truck driver. It must have been horrific for the spectators to witness this. I'm not understanding what was supposed to happen. There was a big fire explosion before the truck or the airplanes even got there.
Pyrotechnics it's part of the show but unrelated to the accident.
It was not a parachute failure.
One of the engines exploded and destroyed the parachute mechanism and the left rear tires.
The big fire before he got there was part of the show.
The pyrotechnics were no where close to the Shockwave truck. Unless you are at the right angle, and viewing the accident in slow motion, it just happens to (appear) that they went off and then caused the accident from this particular angle.
That's so sad. I wondered about that much heat and the tires.
The day before I seen him traveling on interstate 80 in Iowa. Sad to think he was going to his last show. Gods speed RIP
R.I.P. Chris loved watching you and your Family Flame on In those badass Trucks 😢
It caused the truck to go sideways,
and when the truck went sideways, it tipped up on its side, and it flew through the air sideways.
WOW.... I saw that truck recently at an event. Shocking. But You know what. The man went out doing something he enjoyed. Rest of us should be so lucky.
Personally I'd rather not die in a fiery crash, but that's just me.
Very sad. Seen them in the 1990's. God Bless their families.
prayers for his family friends.....
this is very sad for the family of the driver and for the truck the truck will live on as a legend in history and the driver RIP
So sad
May he RIP 🙏
R.I.P. Chris Darnell
Brought many smiles to people's faces.
I believe those two pops are the rear tires letting go... at 1:31, you can see a rear tire shredding, more follow, then afte the flames you clearly see tires rolling away, before the truck bursts. What an incredible machine and tragic loss.
Plum sad. RIP Mr Darnell. You and the truck are legendary
My guess is left rear tire failure, you can see the center hubcap blow off the wheel before the truck goes out of control. The loud pop they heard before the crash started was the tire exploding,. I’m sure that failed tire flipping around at 300+miles an hour is what started to tear up the jet engines.
The engine blew and it caused the tires to go
Very astute of you to catch what they were showing and saying in the video yet you still got it wrong.
And his whole family was They His poor wife and kids dad and mother I am truly sorry for your family you guys this is devastating
Wow that is sad
So heartbreaking
Airshow fans are fucking sadly heartbroken
So... the left rear tire(s) come apart, fender flapped up, then the fender is trying to flying off but knocks a fuel tank loose while only the right parachute is deployed, this causes truck to start sliding towards the right, then the 2nd parachute deploys and the 7,000 lb truck skips into the air and tumbles to its final resting place ? ? ?
May God Comfort the Darnell Family . I have seen shock wave Run here at Tulsa Race Park . That’s a Terrible Tragedy .
Sad times 💔
This is a sad situation because I got to see his father do this when I was younger with the very first Shockwave
Can never understand how people can smile and express remorse. People ae so strange nowadays.
A SHOCKWAVE THROUGH US.
Neal started something really special with Shockwave. Him, his family and crew brought a lot of joy to my family and many others over the years. The heartbreak of all of us fans there that day can not be expressed properly. It's a funny thing to be nothing more than a fan. Yet feel such a loss. It must be the smiles of the family and the eye contact they always gave. Chris walked along the fence that morning. He had a joy in his step and beamed a smile. I know for a fact he had know idea who I was. But when I pointed him out to my grandson. He nodded, smiled and gave a little wave, like old friends would.
I can't imagine the families pain. I hope they take solace in knowing so many of us who's lives have been blessed by Neal, his family and his crew. Morn with them that so great of loss that Chris is to everyone.
Chris went out at 300 mph with his tail on fire. I just wonder if he had to go, that wouldn't be his choice if given one?
( But way to early.)
He will be missed as much as he was appreciated.
Sincere prayers from all of us to the Darnell family.
I think I seen him about 15-20 year's ago at Norwalk Raceway, him & Bob Motz.

It's is one heck of a show.
I try so hard to image the pull of the seat against my back. My senses sponging in the sight, sound, smell and feel of a run in that dream machine. WOW!!!
It looks like the 2 left tires disintegrated just before he went through the flames and the parachutes deployed. So either he had a catastrophic failure of the wheels or he hit something on the runway. Either way, he was along for the ride at that point. RIP good sir.
He didn't "go through the flames". The pyrotechnics were a good hundred yards away, in the median, parallel to the runway he was driving on.
@@5thGenNativeTexan Watch the video again. Particularly the second half of the video where it's zoomed in and slowed down. He clearly drove through the flames.
@@Hossman757 Nope. Start at 01:52 in this video. The bright yellow flames are his truck catching fire. Watch for the next second or two. You can clearly see how the pyrotechnics (the darker orange flames) are placed well in front of the runway. The are set off in that median which is parallel to the runway, which is about a hundred yards away. It's always set up like that. Not in a million years would the put a performer anywhere near the gasoline staged pyrotechnics on the ground.
OMG the Shockwave! We got up to 308mph when I got to ride! God be with the family🕯💐💕💕💕🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
The pop is the key, glad there's video so we can break it down in milliseconds, because the other two trucks if they are going to continue to do shows needs to know the exact cause before continuing in case it's something with the other ones as well. The pop is either compressor, tire, or chute catching the wind, too hard to tell unless I had editing software
RIP sir. What a tragedy. I had the pleasure of meeting you and watching you melt a few racetrack sign-boards at some of your shows. I was always amazed by your imagination, and your balls. You attached 3 jet engines to a truck. Who in the F does that? YOU did! That’s just nuts! You were a true American badass! That being said, I’m sure the crash happened because you were going 300 mph, in a truck. And I’m sure there was a huge vacuum in the air created by the explosions, which unbalanced the truck aerodynamically and when it went through it it probably lost downforce. At that speed, tiny things make a big difference. Regardless, I’m sorry you’re gone, but happy that you died doing the coolest thing that you could dream of. Not many people die with an ear to ear grin…RIP
Well.....like my late great Grand Pappy always used to say...."You should never drive faster than you would care to crash at."
This simple profound statement carries at much weight today as it did back in 1949. You all please stay safe and remember to not be in a hurry to get to the grocery store or to race down a runway.
You just had to be one of those guys 😒
@@r33hab82 I'm sorry what one of those guys??....
@@r33hab82 its not a negative statement, chris was always willing to go fast to an upstanding guy and to put on a show that mezmerized everyone. The phrase he said is a phrase of dont try to move through life to fast take it a little slower and enjoy it
R.I.P. Chris 🌹💔🥀❤️🌹💔🥀❤️and poor Everyone Else!😢😢🥺😢😭💔💔💔💔💔
Check his logs make sure he did a pre trip
Chris Darnell, if you watch the video @2:46 to @2:48, moved fast as frigging lightening. He popped that chute the SECOND that engine malfunctioned/blew- he must not have been able to shutdown the damaged one, which allowed the flames to hit the chute, making it, basically useless. Probably providing just enough drag, to cause the truck to turn, coupled with his other efforts to save the truck.
Truly a "nothing you can do", scenario. My condolences to the entire Darnell family, and to & all his friends & fans.
All good things must come to an end
PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THE DRIV,AH. SO SAD
That truck was one of my favorite things to watch at air shows
What tires are rated to move a rig that big to go 300mph+?
RIP
I met Chris got him to sign a hat I had, it’s sad what happened to him but he won’t be forgotten
Rip saw the truck at the havelock air show, really sad to hear about this RIP Chris
It is very difficult to determine from this one angle but after viewing the footage many times it seems the truck has hit one of those black things at the edge of the runway, because it has veered to the right, & I think just prior to this moment the driver realises the issue & releases the parachute way too early (or it auto deploys for some reason) & while the engines are still providing thrust. An explosion is seen at the rear around this time also so whether this is the cause of the accident is hard to know. Apparently there is footage from a better angle so investigators should be able to determine what happened from this, & from all physical evidence. Has an official report been released yet?
this is so sad. rip. :(
