Scott, please don't consider the stop watch challenge a "fail". You did very well. 💙 You deserve a quiet room and a large comfortable bed after this journey.
I don't think you failed because you set your stopwatch at 11pm but you didn't board your first local train until 11:36 so I think you should take off the 36 minutes, then you would have made it!
I guess once you're on the platform of a train station at night with nothing else to do you can't pretend you're doing anything else except "travelling", so it kind of starts then, even if he's stuck waiting.
I would say that scot never failed, as I think he started the timer too early, it should have started at 23:30 especially since when he started the timer he was not on the correct platform, had he started by the main departure boards he easily could have started the time later.
@@cdog252 Or taken the very regular 73 bus from Driescher Gässchen. However, that would not have made any difference to his arrival in Edinburgh, nor added to the sense of tension at the beginning of his challenge. However, he could have started the clock much later by taking the bus thus delivering his belated arrival within time.
Went to Gibraltar July 2024 and lo and behold your visit to Gibraltar popped up on my iPad. I really enjoy watching all your visits far and wide. You have such a nice friendly manner. Thanks for all the productions.
Fun video. I was also born and lived for years in Quebec, more specifically Montreal. Glad you liked poutine. Can’t say I do but I know I’m in the minority. I enjoy your videos. They’re informative and well constructed. It’s also nice to see someone of my vintage on RUclips. Cheers
Hi Scott would be great if we could get through Sydney airport in that time normally it's around the hour or longer. I love these videos you do and enjoy the places you take us to
I studied in Maastricht for eight years. Finished up and left about this time last year. Cant say I miss it, yet. Lived in Heerlen too. Think I went to Aachen once buts its very close and a popular place to visit for folk in Maastricht and surrounding areas. The train connections are tough I found. Theres commuter trains that can catch you out (Herzegonrath). Nice to see you were here. Enjoy your videos.
Good video Mr Scott, also I would like to recommend you to see Montenegro during summer months. I believe that can be a lifetime journey. Nemanja from Montenegro
I’ll not French (Canadian) and in Australia and would have thought its pronunciation would be obvious. That’s exactly how I pronounce it although we don’t often see it here.
Scott, another great challenge with your usual practical and useful information. It is a shame that flix-bus, being a low-cost carrier, cannot have stops in the down town area where the Hauptbahnhof is located.
They do in many cities, its a little random. Some theyll stop right at the central station, others they are outside. Has to do with how far the nearest highway exit is and if its likely to be congested a lot.
Aachen West may be two trainstops away from the main station, but it isn't any farther from the city center, the train just circles around the center. On the other hand Aachen West is much eaiser to reach with a coach from the motorway.
Nice relaxing journey, I enjoyed fully. Fingers a little cold oh! quick where's my umbrella? I like Glasgow Buchannan bus station, nice place. Many thank Scott really enjoyed that.
I managed Basel to Shrewsbury by train in less than that and that was with a 2 hr wait in Paris and also almost an hour to walk St Pancras to Euston between trains. Easy!
Funny, I just did a very similar journey, from Maastricht (near Aachen) to Edinburgh, but I chose the easy route and took the train to Eindhoven and then a Ryanair flight. I don't think I'd take a bus over that distance unless I had no other choice.
RB stop at every station, so you can be assured it stops in Aachen-West (and every other station it passes). RE might skip some stations, but I believe on this line, that means it skips Aachen-Schanz and Kohlscheid, not Aachen-West and Herzogenrath. But honestly, you could walk to West, it's not that far out of the city, from the city centre, about as far as Hbf, actually (of course depending on where in the city centre). The shortest walking route from Hbf brushes the Aachen Cathedral somewhere in the middle, and is about 2.3 km. There's also a big university campus right next to West.
To clarify the issue with the inoperable doors on the regional train at Aachen West: There were two large yellow signs on the windows of the doors telling passengers that the doors are out of order. They're always in English, too.
In the 1980's I took the train from London Victoria, then the Hovercraft to Calis and an express train to Paris, ditto on reverse. I think the Hovercraft took about 45 minutes to cross, depending on the seas.
Many flixbus stations have been in the city centers (e.g. Cologne) but there often was chaos and they now are outside cities (e.g. Cologne Bonn Airport).
Great video, great channel, great presentation, well done sir. You should be on the BBC, your travel program would be a hit. Looking forward to your next video. 👍
Hi Scott, a very enjoyable video, and the idea of a stop watch challenge is a great one for videos. But curious why you chose that 18 hour time range, as you were in the airport for what looks like 7 or 8 hours. Is the objective to avoid an overnight hotel cost as well, which I can understand in itself. From the video it would seem you were booked on a Ryanair flight from Charleroi which presumably was timetabled for around 14:00 hrs out of Charleroi. So essentially you could have also made it something like a 10 hour challenge and still using buses from Aachen to Charleroi via Brussels, or even a train to Brussels and even on to Charleroi and still arrive in Charleroi before 12 noon. Given the time you spent at the airport, would this video not more accurately be described as a challenge on the reliability of the Ryanair flight schedule and the connecting bus from Edinburgh to Glasgow? Keep up the good work though!
Hi Sean, the Ryanair flight was leaving (from memory) around 10-10:30am, so I had to work backwards from there. The Flixbus I caught from Aachen would have been the only service giving me time to connect Brussels Midi-Charleroi while allowing 3 hours at the airport. I hadn't checked in at that point, and based on previous experiences at CRL, when security had been a nightmare, I wanted to give myself a comfortable amount of time. I also had to catch the last train from Aachen to Aachen West to connect with Flixbus to Brussels. You were right to say it was down to reliability, but if one leg had been cancelled or seriously delayed, the whole challenge would have failed much earlier. I'm glad you enjoyed the adventure, and glad it wasn't obvious in the video how nervous I was. Empty stations, dark streets and remote bus stops. All part of the fun!
Huh... I live in Aachen and to be honest I don't know of a way to be sure that the train 100% stops in Aachen West, unless you use an app or see a detailed train services map. As far as I know all regional trains (ie not ICE) stop in Aachen West, but not all in Aachen Schanz!
Now, malfunctioning door on British train would be regarded as unreliability and incompetence but on a German train, oh, how unusual. Not too many airports gave observation areas nowadays, remember the Queens Building at Heathrow when I was a lad.
As a Canadian I can advise you that you can avoid confusing "poutine" with "Putin" (a dish best avoided, as you say 😁) by calling it "poo-TEEN," as we Canadians do. Poutine's also commonly called "a heart attack on a plate"
What an odd journey.....you spent basically 11 hours getting from Aachen to Charleroi Airport which isn't that far.....and then far fewer hours all the way to Glasgow!
You know this journey can be done in under 9 hours with trains (and a bus), right? -more expensive, sure, but more than twice the travel time and just hanging around at Charleroi airport (of all places) for over 9 hours... WOOF!! -would never even consider that.
Recently back from a trip to Canada, incl montreal Quebecois (who’d be correct, it’s their dish) pronounce the food approx poo-tin / pootch-in…. Rest of Canada says it more like “poo-teen”
Do you realize that you could have gotten to Glasgow in 9 hours by taking only the train? You would've had to wait in Aachen until 7:00 am, but you would've been in Glasgow by 3:30 pm.
@@xr6lad Oh I agree from my personal perspective. I'll do a long daytime rail/bus trip - but overnight I'm sleeping horizontally (either train or in a hotel room) unless there's really no option. Which is why I enjoy watching Scott go by overnight coach.
Did you not watch the video? He used a plane but as is always the case "2 hour by plane" is not an accurate description of a journey of anything but takeoff to landing, it inevitably takes hours more to get to/from the places you actually need to be at.
