Heyo like the video and i want to say at 8:45, you should only consider something a nitpick if whatever your critiquing about isn't consistently found.
If for example the only time they used a stock image or png of something, was the scene with the bread, I'd consider it a nit pick if you fixate on it. Nit picks are mostly just critques built off isolated flaws that don't happen very often.

The guardian vows were such a missed opportunity. The assignment effectively boiled down to, “Write down your motivation for being here and shout it into this hole so that the audience can hear it”. This could have been an efficient, non-contrived way to get us invested in the entire main cast in a single episode. Yet the show takes this genius premise and does nothing with it. Not only do we never see anyone working on their vows, but when we finally hear them, they turn out to be vaguely heroic buzzwords that tell us nothing about who these girls are.

there is a demon who is a teacher. why aren't there religious characters pointing out how fucked it is to have a demon teach ethics? why is a human and an elf dating just normal? it's a perfect opportunity to see some conflict! "oh, she's just messing around in her youth, when the human dies she'll get a *real* partner". this would actually be a perfect opportunity to go all "are they talking about the interspecies relationship? or that she is the gay?" because of all the double entendres about her being young and it being a phase you can throw out!

They could've done something with Rose's Mom being some legendary warrior and play up the nepotism angle.
Rosemary would only be there because her of mother, but she's lacking in any real talent and has to work and prove herself.
An interesting conflict is that Sage wouldn't have a legendary family, but is extremely talented and eventually feels that Rosemary, being behind everyone else, is holding her back. Give these characters conflict and moments to tear each other down and build each other back up.
There's something here, but everything isn't utilized properly and needed someone to say "No, this doesn't work" and fix the script.

  • @marvalice3455

I wouldn't say predictable stories are bad. what is bad is when the story is predictable in a boring way.
soap operas are _extremely_ predictable, but they are predictable in emotionally tense and engaging ways. the problem with them is usually that the plot makes no logical sense, and cause and effect bend in crazy ways to get the most emotionally exploitative result rather than the characters and the plot working together it make an emotionally and mentally engaging story.
high guardian herb has a completely different problem. the characters are card board cutouts who the writers refuse to have anything bad happen too, the plot is stale and boring and the setting makes no sense at all. this means that, because the characters can never have bad things happen to them, and we don't understand the setting, we cannot get emotional engagement, and because the plot is an afterthought and we can't understand its implications for the world we cannot have rational engagement.
the issue isn't predictability. the issue is that regardless of if we know the result or not, we don't give a shit.

Hearing Sage's take on guy friendships has got me seething to no end. In my experience, the guy friends I hang out with can be loving and supporting like how a group of friends comprised of girls would. Hell, by Sage's stereotype logic, I could say the same thing about how toxic a friendship of girls can be, given their gossiping and Judgemental attitudes can breed room for negativity and pessimism, which isn't at all beautiful. To me, not only is this just agenda pushing but also shows that the writers don't understand that the way friendships work are not mutually exclusive to gender.

Pardon my cynicism but I don't think the crew behind this show are the types to have actual friends. They seem more like a ragtag group of insecure individuals who come together based off superficial connections and mutual loathing for others that remind them of their insecurities.

To play devil's advocate, Sage's grudge against guy friendships could have been fine if the show bother to make Sage learn over time that this isn't the way of thinking things. They could also make the audience understand Sage's bias, not agree, but understand her if they also showcase why Sage feels this way to begin with. But considering that the show is filled with awkward writing, it made this moment read the other way and didn't expand on it. Whether it's intentional or not, it's still a missed opportunity nonetheless.

What frustrates me about this show is how much potential the magic system had. The whole old magic vs new magic debate? THAT'S HELLA INTERESTING! ELABORATE ON THAT! They only ever show Sage defending old magic while everyone else makes fun of her. Have other students/teachers defend old magic so that it's an actual debate! Actually explain how the two kinds of magic differ! Delve into the pros and cons of each type of magic and why people prefer one over the other! THE MAGIC SYSTEM COULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING!

    • @azurai3934
      @azurai3934 2 года назад +11

This reminds me of something similar in Black Clover and the expansion of its magic system. Asta and a few others go to the Heart Kingdom, and it's here where we learn about mana arrays and more about the differences between Heart and Clover.
Essentially, mana arrays draw power from nature itself to attack as opposed to magic only making them stronger and allowing for the use of commands to instruct spells. The key thing here is nature as Heart mages mostly have elements such as Fire, Lightning, Wind, etc whereas Clover has developed more unusual magic elements including Ash, Spatial, Time, and Transformation to name a few and those lose the ability to draw magic from nature itself.
In this show old magic could draw from the idea of the old witch stereotype and rely more on natural sources with potions, chanting spells and so on whereas new magic could require more specialist training to develop and use but be require simpler commands/be instantaneous. So sorta the classic witch vs a more superhero like witch if that makes any sense.

Or rather than have students/teachers defend old magic, since the school is hard focused on new magic (even though some students just arbitrarily know old magic near the end), have some outside forces speak their mind on old magic and how it could be useful.
Characters like the dwarves, the mermaids, or even the villains could have explained old magic or utilized it in a way that showcased its pros over new magic. Maybe new magic is quick and easy, but old magic has the potential to be much stronger. Or new magic is varied in use, while old magic does a few select spells, but it can do them better if charged for longer. Anything to distinguish the two other than "one is slow and bad, while the other is fast and good."

I had never seen the ethics class scene, but man, does it deliver the message horribly!
If she's trying to teach the class that the presence of weapons shouldn't guide our actions, why is she using creatures that become hostile towards each other the moment they have weapons in hand?
This could have been a good showcase of Rosemary's idea that both having blades will not result in the intended outcome, and either one of the creatures will be aggressive no matter if both have spikes or not, but will become docile if it's the only one without spikes. That way the lesson is that bad people exist and will want to harm you, unless they themselves can't get away with it, so you should always be ready to defend yourselves and others, but never be the one to believe just because you have the weapon or power to hurt others that you should choose that path.
Seriously, if you remove the knives from two people that are trying to stab each other, they'll just try to punch each other to death instead. Her reverting the creatures back to normal only for their aggressiveness to vanish and hug immediately doesn't teach anything, it implies people become aggressive because they have weapons, not because of the choices they make. This on a show where children are SUPPOSED TO HAVE WEAPONS AND FIGHT!

It's infurating because I _know_ it's some kind of jab from *_That Side_* towards the Umbrella of Self-Reliance and Responsibility, in this case specifically the right of humans to bear weapons to defend themselves. The 2nd Amendment.
*_That Side_* is vehemently against it in any way, shape or form, and while I wont get into the immense amount of garbage that mindset is, I will say it's infuriating that they seem to have this facade belief of "Oh well without weapons everyone would just be nice!" like *_BULLSHIT_* people have been wanting to kill each other before our civilization even knew what _an actual tool was._
A Rock is a weapon, a sharp stick is a weapon, _our hands_ are more than adequate to do significant damage to just about anything and I get real tired of these soft-bodied weak-minds trying to tell us -"You can be controlled easier- everyone will be good to each other if you just disarm them!"

Hmmm I mean it seemed to be aimed at not getting pigeon holed in your thinking. The nature of the creatures simplifies the point because while yes, transforming the defenseless one means that it has a fair fight, the same effort to be taken to transform the aggressive one. De-escalation is generally preferable IF it's feasible. So the point is decent but I'm also not entirely sure why that's coming from the ethics teacher. It also highlights a potential deficit in Rosemary's thinking but as was stated in the video they don't do anything with it. Plus without knowing what Guardians actually do at that point it's unclear how helpful it is

If you take another step back, having the creatures be hostile when pointy & snuggly when not is also, on a certain level, inherently racist...especially in a D&D-like world. There's also really nothing in Rosemary's comments that even vaguely suggests she's anything but bloodthirsty--that she's hoping to get to see blood get spilled--which is something an ethics teacher should be noting and being concerned about. I mean, do you really want to be known as the ethics teacher of somebody who gets themselves famous as, say, "That bigot who slaughtered a bunch of baby dragons for having the audacity to exist"?

Personally I am thankful that High Guardian Spice exists. It's become my creative playground for a fantasy story project. Though my forte is just visuals. Of course I have to watch the show itself to have my own insight.
For my Episode 1 rewrite, the lesbian relatives should've shown Rose and Sage in the school already so it doesn't feel like filler. The incident with the locket could still happen.
For my rewrite of the Guardian Vows episode I made the main cast find out that to become a guardian they have to choose their method of execution and dishonor when they fail and/or abandon their guardianship. It's to show their dedication to the line of duty. And Thyme is the first one to step forward to the well and speak her vow and method of execution. Meanwhile, Rose and Sage are shocked by the requirement of having a personal death warrant and they have to do it now or forfeit their qualifications for Guardianship.
I mean, the writers want a mature audience didn't they? Make the candy-colored show have mature themes.

Something I should've commented on before - Rosemary has yet to prove that she belongs in this academy.
Say what you will about Sage and Parsley, but they at least prove something of themselves. Rosemary? She fails at absolutely everything! While we watch Sage put together an antidote, Rose is screwing up a tree pose and getting comically beaten up by a dragon whelp - the same kind of whelp that everyone else, including the physically inferior Snapdragon (demonstrated later), managed to wrestle into submission long ago!
Probably would've been interesting if her clumsiness goes away while she's wielding a sword (or something like a sword), but Episode 3 shows that she's clumsy even with a sword in her hand...
I mean, what a waste, right? Even Ruby showed plenty of combat talent when she was approved to move up to Beacon Academy. The only student there who entered with no talent was Jaune, but his entry application was technically illegal - and even then, he didn't want to fool around like Rosemary did, and worked to improve himself.
(Sorry, only using Beacon arc RWBY for High Guardian Spice comparisons, since there's only one season of the latter, and the Beacon arc is the most similar being the school arc.)

So, I paused at 16:26 because a thought occurred to me. Well, several thoughts have occurred to me by this point, but a couple in particular.
So, my first thought. I'm gonna write it out script style because that fits how I'm looking at it.
    [Begin scene]
*Black screen, but thunder rumbles and growls just beyond the blackness. This goes on for a few seconds before lightning flashes and the thunder booms loudly, flashing in to the end of a nightmare. ROSEMARY is in scene, her back to the audience, as we see roots and vines growing around another person, who struggles against it, a sword in her grasp.*
    ROSEMARY: Mom!!!!
*ROSEMARY gets up and runs toward her mom, but the distance only ever grows, until all she can do is watch as the vines finally close over her mother's face.
Flash cut to the present. It is DAWN, and everything is peaceful. ROSEMARY is panting, sweating, and out of sorts, wearing some sort of sleepwear and laying in bed, the covers having been thrown off in her sleep.*
ROSEMARY: *to herself* That nightmare again... (Groan the words. Extra points if she throws an arm across her forehead as she huffs out a sigh.)
*ROSEMARY reaches into the neck of her shirt, withdrawing a PENDANT. She rubs her thumb across it, but does not open it. There is a faint knock heard on what can only be a door, and ROSEMARY swiftly stuffs the PENDANT back down her shirt.*
ROSEMARY: C-Come in! (Hesitant. Sell the hesitancy.)
*The door gently opens, and in comes DAD. He pauses for a moment, taking in his daughter's distressed being.*
DAD: .... Is... Everything okay? You don't look so good.
    ...
Bam. Suddenly, the pendant has meaning, the nightmare is meaningfully placed, and one set of parental figures is well and truly set to have an actual character introduction moment.
And yes. There are descriptors that would also help. As an example, what Rosemary's room is filled with, or if it's completely bare of everything but the essentials.
But that... Is effort best saved for another time.

Which wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t really try to phone home how diverse the production team is.
And then them being like “this show breaks gender norms and stereotypes” but then have sage go on a whole rant to snapdragon about how girls just have a deeper bond and guys could never understand but PLOTTWIST snapdragon does understand but not because this show is here to break gender norms or whatever but because he’s set up to be the transgender character which is coolio yknow. The writers could've used the second episode to flesh out Parsley, Sage and Amaryllis. E.g.: Parsley was good at blacksmithing, but couldn't use all her potential at home, 'cause her family was doing the regular BS, and she wanted to try the magical one. So, she read a lot about artifacts and was eager to study; during her first lesson a teacher gave them the creativity task (like "i need a flexible dagger with a resistence to ice, and yall can't use the next liquids in the process"), and Parsley manage to do everything much better than her mates, EVEN THO her work wasn't perfect. She also made a lot of mistakes, but she was happy, cause she finally can grow (pun intended).
Sage and Amaryllis were fighting during all day, and when the students were poisoned, they began to compete who would create the antidote faster. And when the teacher praised them, suddenly Amaryllis was the one who said: "Fuck you, we could be dead. We can't trust you, when you poison us the first time we met. I will change my schedule just because I don't want to see you ever again". And when Sage, Parsley and Rosemary discuss this episode, Parsley and Rose are all of a sudden on Amaryllis' side, when Sage calls her "a-hole with no respect", because Sage finally felt powerful, smart and respected during the lesson. And also it can make Sage "a teacher's pet" type, which suits her, in my opinion. It can also explain her sudden shift to new magic: when all the teachers say that new one is better, it's actually, in her opinion, better. With that we can also re-make the scene with cousin Anise: Sage says how she hates her mom for teaching old magic, but Anise protests and says "It was her choice; you make yours, but you shouldn't blame your mom for hers". Yeah, just change the sides, so Anise would look like an adult, and Sage would have a conflict.
And it also will draw a line between Sage and Parsley; the first one wants to be praised for her success, and the last one wants an improvement.
These little changes could make this show interesting. Because stuff happens, but actually, without conflicts and actual relationships.

Something I just noticed, is how the characters often seem to not move, in a way that fits how they talk.
    Example.
Episode one (in your video ca 2:39)
Rose talks as if she is imagining some grand adventure and she can’t wait for it to happen in a high energy voice.
How would you imagine someone to talk in such a scenario?
Maybe they would pick up a stick and fight some imaginary foes, while jumping around. Showing that they are completely immersed in their fantasy. Or they grab their friend by the shoulder and point towards the horizon, where their dreams lie, with large hand gestures to emphasize the epicness.
However in HGS, Rose just stands around, almost still. Looking at her friend in a casual way, that would fit better if she asked if her friend remembered to write down homework. As if they dubbed a line over the wrong scene.
Such a basic animation mistake kills the immersion immediately. Because you feel the disconnect between what’s being said and what’s shown. And because the immersion breaks, you notice the other writing issues even more

The creators loved to harp about how diverse the show is (when they're an almost all white staff but ok) but literally like you said: the only thing that's different are the skin tones. I didn't see any proper black hair styles, any Asians, any South Americans, any disabilities, any distinguishable religious groups, any different body types baring Parsley's any... anything...
The most diverse they get are different skintones and different sexualities which most of the characters aren't confirmed to have and we can't see at first glance. As must as diversity can be via skin tone, there are other factors that play too.

As a fellow writer, I should say this show (and Raye himself) lacks a lot of planning and feedback. It's really hard to keep track of all plot holes in a story. You have to read and edit from the beginning a million times and even then there could still be some, so I'm not even going there. But there are simple logic errors since the beginning.
In episode 1, we see portal magic exists, since it was used by the elf and her wife (I forgot their names). So why do that whole travel segment, where the protagonists take like 3 different "vehicles" (I don't know what's the proper word for this in English, since it's not my native language) to get o Lyngarth? Are there a distance limit to the portals? Was it so they could "explore" the world?
Why and how were these students selected? They seem to not even know what a guardian is (does anyone know tho?), so why even bother? They were almost killed by a teacher, does the school not care about their safety? And even if they don't, why would they still want to be students there, since they don't know what the goal of the academy is?
This one isn't really a logic error, it seems more like a lazy writing pretending to be aesthetic: why is Sage's family so blue (from hair to clothes) and Rosemary's so pink? Is it like a clan, where you use different colors to identify yourself and can only have a relationship inside that clan? Is it some sort os bigotry from the characters part? Even aesthetic-wise, this doesn't make the slightest sense to me, since the background obviously didn't go well with the color pallette.
But the icing on the cake is Raye silencing constructive criticism on Twitter. The one's that were like personal attacks I kinda get it, no one wants to be attacked. But then again, there were genuine (and good) advice there, this make it look like he doesn't want to be better at the job he likes, he just want people to watch and nod silently to everything they are shown, which I think can have a bad impact on his career. If you don't want to hear the feedback, maybe try not doing anything at all, I guess.

    • @Glisten456
      @Glisten456 2 года назад +2

You bring up a lot of good points, I think I lot of the stuff you mention can be traced back to poor writing organization and adding things for the coolness of it. Like the portal magic being a thing that exists, but the team decided to add these wacky vehicles to show off "look how cool our world is!!!" even though it works against the logic.

    • @Muna-Jlore0997
      @Muna-Jlore0997 Год назад

The way the writers used these things were so inconsistent, like portals for example: the characters barely use the portals for inconvenient situations like when the MC were trapped in the cave or the sister school was under the attack by a sea dragon. The writers never thought this through while storyboarding, let alone scripting it.

Yeah the fact that Rosemary and Sage's parents all look so similar to their spouses bothers me. Kinda like how Milhouse Van Houten's parents look so similar. Almost like they're siblings or cousins to one another. Also, I don't generally view nitpicks as valid complaints against a game or show's quality, unless there's a LOT to nit-pick. Because at that point, rather than being a few minor problems here and there than can be overlooked, they become a multitude of minor problems in a pattern that becomes not only noticable, but distracting and that makes it hard to focus on anything the show/game is doing right.

This shows brings nothing new to the table, and there's no excuse in this day and age to not have on-model designs (the occasional off-model look was kind of cute in Steven Universe, but that was probably intentionally done)

The first episode is supposed to be really exciting and help set up ideas and themes to be used later. Not just a plain "here are the characters. Here are their basic personalities".
Edit: @18:14 is that the only animation director mentioned, because that's a South Korean company that has worked on a lot of stuff (though its very likely [just from how South Korean animation companies tend to be used] that they aren't usually the primary animators for projects and do less important scenes or help during a time crunch). One example being that they co-produced the second season of Rising of the Shield Hero, and they've been involved with a lot of comic book based animations like Justice League, The Batman, 19 episodes of Avatar the Last Airbender, and 1 episode of Teen Titans (according to Wikipedia).

Most anime with large ensemble casts or a villain-of-the-week format where you have a new character introduced each episode don't even show *that* many characters in the first season's opening, because the first season isn't enough time to introduce 50-some-odd side characters, let alone develop them or make us care about them.

Yeah. Sure, specialized high schools for gifted kids or kids planning to go into a certain career do exist IRL and are a common setting in anime, but the show just being like "You're here because you're ☆☆☆special☆☆☆ uwu" without any explanation as to why the characters were accepted kills the whole point of it being an elite school. It really does seem more like a self-insert fantasy for the writers to pat themselves on the back for being so ☆☆☆special☆☆☆. Usually in anime where the characters are students at an elite school, it explains why the students got accepted. But other than Parsley or Sage, I don't get why any of the other characters got in...

Upon reflection, I can see some ways the ideas in these 2 episodes could have worked. Episode one arguably has the most world building. I especially like that zoom out of the giant, and the travel montage, while dragged out, did have a bit of charm in seeing all these modes of transportation. Personally I would have made episode one like Little Witch Academia, where the first episode is just getting to school, and simply getting there is the conflict. It would also help to flesh out Rosemary and Sage.
The whole guardian vow thing both does and doesn't make sense. I'd like to think it could be one of those weird assignments where you write a future letter to yourself, and at graduation you go back and see how you've changed. So maybe the vow is supposed to be like that, and then at graduation many seasons later, the characters are arced out enough to make serious vows based on their growth and experience.

@@trumann5975 Very poorly done. Due to probably the worst setting this would work in. Since magic would have made swapping genders a common and non-omg thing. I mean, the show is at least consistent in that area. Nothing has any proper explanation or rules. Harry Potter gave things reason. Why do they use a train. When the world is magic. Because even second year students can screw up on the fireplace teleporting magic. So it's easier for them to just walk through a hidden door. And have a train drive them to Hogwartz. Also the fireplace powder has a space limit. So baggage etc. wouldn't fit. They put in limitations and conventional things to work within the magic world right. Not to mention. The fireplace teleporting is restricted to locations. VS they can just teleport anywhere. This avoids a plot hole.
The two ladies in spice can make a portal to that bed room. Does that power have a distance limit? Does it drain you? If no to those. Than why do trains exist? They even use a broom at some point. Why didn't they just fly the whole way? This is where a limitation would have benefited. Picture pilot episode. They're suppose to take the train etc. But Rosemary makes them use the broom. Sage warns them we can't fly on this forever. Our magic could run out. And will be stranded. That could have been the conflict. The two leads argue, go, they screw up. Get stuck in a dangerous situation. You can than introduce Parsely. Because their broom broke and need rescuing. Parsley could be training nearby. Because she's new to blacksmithing. Her family forces her to train far away from the home. So she doesn't burn it down. And hears their screams. This sets up their personalities, and gives us some action. You could than have their families in flashback's. Showing Rosemary doing dangerous things. Because she saw her mother doing things. And she wants to prove she's like her.

I'm gonna start my notes on how I'd improve this show in the comments cuz this is the first 'play by play' I've seen that I can use for this sooo
Episode one: We spend longer with the family, longer in town, showing Rose training against the local guardians. She gets in trouble, taking on a fight that's too big for her, and Sage uses old magic to save her from any serious injuries, but the locket is broken (much worse than it was broken in the show. Like it's cracked in half, keeping it from closing, but there's fracturing along the outside and the inner picture is dirty from hitting the ground). Rose looks ready to cry seeing it break, and Sage comes over, ready to give a friendly 'quit getting into fights I need to save you from' lecture but stops seeing the necklace broke. She offers a word of comfort and says 'maybe there's someone in [whatever the town they were going to is named] who can fix it?'. Rose nods and suppresses her feelings, acting stoic and saying something like 'yeah! There's so many amazing metalworkers in [town] I bet I can get it repaired in no time!" before Rose pauses and goes "you used new magic...? Are you sure about that.. you know what your mom says about it." Sage says "it's fine. It saved you, after all!" . Their parents come to collect them and take them to the train station and we get, for Rose, lines like "Be careful about getting in too many fights! We know you're a fighter, but please, be safe." and "Mom would be proud if she could see you, and we know she'll be proud of you when she comes home." Sage gets "Be careful of that New Magic, it's [something dangerous about new magic, probably something like 'it doesn't respect the old ways! Using it kills living things!]" and "I love you honey, remember to keep practicing your sigils surrounded by nature, so if you mess up like you did last time, nature will protect you!" Giving exposition about new and old magic. Then both are handed their weapons (Rosemary gets her mom's sword, which was promised to her if she could prove she could use it, and Sage gets her first staff, something that parents make when their child is ready to begin channeling strong magic) and told who they're looking for in town. They board the train, and Rose pulls out the broken locket, looking down at it sadly. Sage tries to fix it with magic but only breaks it further and gives an apologetic look, but before she can say anything, Rose puts on a brave face and says 'It's okay. We'll find someone to fix it." As the train leaves the station, it starts winding up the mountain, and you see just how tiny the hometown is. Rose and Sage look to each other, then to the town, wide eyed, before looking to each other and grinning and they start making comments and jokes about being heroes from a small town, about bringing honor and notoriety to their home, and about how they're ready for bigger adventures. During the train ride, Rose hears someone talking about their metalsmithing business, and how 'if only someone could get me [x] then I'd do anything for them!!" and steals a witch's broom to fly off, determined to get her locket fixed. Sage calls out before stealing one too and following. They get the item and return only for the metal smith to say "This isn't even worth repairing. Just buy a new one." and Rose argues, with Sage stepping in to provide some more level headed arguments for her friend. They get kicked off the train for starting a fight, but they get to keep the brooms. Their luggage doesn't come with, as Sage realizes, so she makes Rose turn back and they meet up with the train. It drops them off at the train station nearest the school, and the aunts are waiting there and pick them up, worried about why they weren't on the train. Rose struggles to lie, being too honorable and knightly, so Sage takes up the lie, voice shaky and stuttery (she's also bad at lying but at least she CAN do it), and explains like "Oh we just wanted some fresh air!". They get to their place and we get a bit of exposition when we see luggage in the place like "[Elf Aunt] is having to go to the forest to try to deal with something there." and "I have to go home. I can feel the trees and the source of all elven lives dying, and... Well, that's enough darkness for you two. You're both still novice guardians, you should focus on your schooling!" and so they have a family moment, like a dinner, before going to bed. Rose has a nightmare still, but it's about how her mom said something about going to fight some 'big darkness' before she disappeared, and how she's terrified she's going to lose her aunt that way too. She wakes up and hears voices. She grabs her sword and sneaks into the living room and hears several of the teachers talking with the aunts, giving more exposition about what is happening with the elven woods. Rose gasps, and they stop, looking towards her. She quickly retreats, and once the adults have confirmed she's 'asleep' she wakes Sage and explains what she heard. Sage gives some sort of potential exposition like "my mom says [and then something to show Sage's mom or other family member is also in danger, probably because Sage's mom is working in the elven woods as an old magic expert]..." and Rose says "We have to help!" and sage responds with "Then we better become guardian's soon! We need to get stronger to help our family!" ANNND END CREDITS.

Episode two: It starts off with them going to school and they get into that caravan, being driven all the way to school, where they explore the grounds a bit and, upon seeing the smithy, meet Parsley, who lives on the grounds with her father, who is a blacksmith for the three lines of courses (blacksmithing is an apprenticeship that he teaches with the school's approval, and he has Parsley and perhaps one other of his children as his two apprentices) and they ask her dad to fix the locket. He, too, refuses, and Rose and Sage both look so dejected Parsley offers to try. They thank her and go to their dorm, expressing how it's bigger than both of their rooms. They unpack, and we get some character exposition between the two, showing their friendship and main concerns. They are summoned to the auditorium via building wide announcement, where the three women (Who represent the Maiden Mother Crone, an important goddess / trio of goddesses to pagans and no one can change my mind) explain what guardians are, and how not only each guardian is sworn to protect the nation and it's people, to uphold balance within the world and to safeguard all that is sacred, but how they will add something additional to their vows, such as "I will never swing my blade without just cause" and "I will never use my magic to draw blood from those who do not wish it upon themselves" other honorable statements (it can be anything, as long as it's important to the character and within the previously set boundaries of the standard part of the vow.) The vows are meant to be built up so that when they graduate, they will know what they wish to do in life beyond 'be good guy, do good' and 2nd and especially 3rd year kids will have apprentice ships where they learn how to better fufill their personalized vow. There, we see both Thyme, who is standing in the background and gets a 'they look scary' from Rose / Sage, and then they see Parsley, who wants to learn to fight. They go to the ethics class, where someone walks in and they assume they're the teacher, but no they draw a massive summoning circle and you get the demon teacher, who's voice they had heard in episode one, and SHE'S HOT OKAY SHE'S GONNA BE HOT I NEED TO ADD THIS, and while she is summoned everyone is like panicked and several people draw weapons, but she comes in and introduces herself like "I am professer [name], and I'll be your ethics teacher~" she talks about trasfiguration, doing the example with the two rats / spikey boys, and it's a lesson about balance, and she brings it back to 'you need to learn to balance your beliefs. If they contradict, and they will, you will need to learn to find a balance. A third option, a compromise... anything to protect both values. If one must be compromised, you will need to know how to weigh which one is more important, and that, students, is what I'm here to teach~". Snapdragon makes a snarky comment as he draws his sword like "Why is a demon teaching ethics? Shouldn't you be out terrorizing babies or stepping on puppies?" and before the teacher can argue, Rose draws a weapon too, ready to fight her. The teacher allows both to attack her (Though they try to work together they keep getting in each other's ways) before stepping away. Some calls out (I am not letting Sage and Rose share this class period) calls out "You're destroying the room!" midway through the 'fight' and Rose stops, looking around and seeing students are scared OF HER (and Snapdragon). Snapdragon attacks, almost hitting a student before Rose catches his blade and throws him back from the student. He turns, ready to attack her too, but she places her sword over his chest and says 'wait.' then turns to the teacher and asks 'why is a demon a teacher?' and she explains all of it and then smiles and says "I commend you for ceasing your attacks~" then turns to the class. "This student came to the right conclusion. Often times, problems can be solved with your words, not your swords." She then carefully takes snap's sword. "Though often times, if a problem can't be solved with words, it is best to draw your sword and end it quickly, before someone gets hurt." She looks to the student he had just attacked, then to him pointedly, earning a small, annoyed 'sorry' from him before he sits back down. She uses old magic to fix the classroom (it's revealed there's a massive spell like on the ceiling to repair the room because she always starts a semester / schoolyear with students attacking her and she got tired of drawing new sigils each time). Cut to Parsley, trying to figure out how to repair the locket. It's a short scene, just her thinking and shows her punching a boxing bag as she thinks before she gets the idea how to fix it and she grins and runs off. Cut to the next class, with Caraway. He has a much more normal introduction (not just straight being summoned). He introduces himself and Sage and Amaryllis both raise their hands and get into like a 'b1tch off' trying to prove who knows more. Caraway stops them with two sigils over their face. He gives more exposition for New Magic and Old Magic, talking again about balance between the two and explaining in a less biased way what both are, correcting both Amaryllis and Sage on places where their biases come through. You get a bit more exposition in the background of Caraway teaching while Amaryllis and Sage form their rivalry. Cut to the next class with the nb centaur (I refuse to admit that character is a BINARY person I mean just look at em). Which has a more biased perceptive of new magic and Amaryllis being a bully. Sage presses down and mutters 'I use new magic too...' and Amaryllis makes a snarky remark about how old magic is weak and deserves to die. Back in the dorm during freetime (They do share that period) they talk about the two bullies they faced and hype each other up, like "Yeah Rose you're a great fighter, you got that fighting instinct from your mom" and "YEAH! AND I BET YOU'LL FIND A WAY TO USE BOTH OLD AND NEW MAGIC AND PROVE EVERYONE WRONG!!" "YEAH I'LL DO THAT- Wait!!! I Can do that!! That'll be my vow!! I'll vow to work towards unifying old and new magic!" "YEAH, AND I'LL VOW-... I'll vow...?" "Don't worry. You'll find your vow!" and it shows their friendship and shows Rosemary needs to find herself while Sage is going to bring both sides of her magic closer! Sage goes to the last class, One I'll call "Potions" where they are all given poison tea. Sage and Amaryllis are sat next to each other and both begin to doubt the tea like based of it's color or scent and they argue over it but both end up concluding 'this is poisoned." and dump their cups. As they do, a student like throws up or collapses, showing they did get poisoned. Everyone freaks out, but the teacher remains where she is. The class go to help the poisoned student (no one else drank enough tea yet to get the effects of poison). As they do, they notice the student was a disabled student (For diversity). Sage manages to save the student while Amaryllis takes control and checks on the remaining students, and class continues on as normal. Later, at like dinner, Parsley runs up to them, having semi repaired to locket. The break couldn't be fully fixed, so it now has a golden scar across it's back. She asks like "What's so important about the locket anyways? It's just cheesecake." and Rose laughs and goes "Oh, I just really like cheesecake!" and puts the locket back on, but later that night, you see her take the picture out and look at her mom and say "I'll find you one day. I promise." and sage comes over and leans on her shoulder and says "We'll find her, together. We're friends, afterall." And Rose nods, and as the episode closes, it zooms in on something in the picture that foreshadows the mother turning against the country and the guardians.

Honestly, what would’ve been more interesting based on the first episode (and I’ve never watched HGS) would’ve been is this was a MG coming-of-age show. Rosemary could’ve gone to the school since it would allow her to search for her parents (who in this idea were teachers who mysteriously vanished on school grounds).
In the first episode, Rose would’ve wanted to explore/gather clues since she is naturally gifted at school while her friend wants to study/train. However, Rose constantly gets distracted during her search due to her child-ish personality.
The next day, there is a test which Rose fails and she worries that she will flunk out. She also recalls how she has no leads on her parents in her notes. These two reminders makes her realize that she has a lot of maturing to do.
Over the course of the season, Rose could practice using her magic on-screen, work hard, and try to be more mature in balancing school all the while looking for her mother.

After they 2 finish talking the person defeats rosemary in a flash. Sage can't process it. The person walks up to Sage and asks the same question. Sage pees herself and the person walks away assuming her answer but says "Guardians are a bad spice for Mercenaries y'know."
Reasons for scene:Dark tone introduced. Tells a little bit about the world and one of things guardians do. The dangers of being a guardian.

I love it! Introducing stakes and setting the tone in the first episode is pivotal for a fantasy show!

Nah, the writers would never go for something like that.

As I see all this show is about "lets live in the infantile world without any rules, any struggle, any hard learning, any real conflicts". Every time they are facing some aspect of life where you are gonna fail hard, or struggle, or must sacrifice something and face hardships they are just skipping it. For example this school is supposed to be something "high", like a high education in my country, which IS a hell, frustration, and a very hard thing to fail at and being kicked off. VERY easy. And writers are "oh lets everything would be fun and games" but it would be much better if it is a very hard education AND a fun stuff inside of it, so it would have humor AND a stakes.

The only thing "High" about this show is everyone making it.

I mean, I would certainly hold songs to a high standard when they want to consider it to be high art of anime-style and thus automatically invite comparison with basically anything.
Poor singing aside tho, yeah. This ain't it, chief. Especially with whatever the scene at 14:33 is. "Yeah, one of the mainduo almost just killed someone. Let's make that random girl join the team later!" One of the weirdest accidential meetings between characters I have ever seen.
I personally think of how I would completely change it to fix it from time to time. Like, chapter 1 of my version would be about the duo in the past where they are established and meet(Spoilers, Rose is an Orphan who has nothing from her family except the sword in this concept. That is why she knows nothing about her mother or guardians. Instead of her just being dumb like this here.). chapter2 is the equivalent of this episode 1 where they run away from their home and travel to the city where they intend to enroll into the academy. Parsley would get a proper plot where her wishes directly contradict with her family, so she just leaves(Which would later come back) and there at some point would be a fifth girl in the series that is the typical antagonistic one who eventually joins. I have no idea at the moment how I would factor Thyme into this at the moment, but there surely is some way to do it.
I actually really should write this out at some point, because I want to know if my ideas on it are actually as cool as I personally think. But my laziness and being a mediocre writer who has no idea how to get from point A to B and pace things(Though this doesn't know how to do it either, evidently) really hinders it.

    On conflict:
Every episode should have conflict, even if it is something so simple as:
"Johnny and Jill want to get sandwiches, and have strong opinions on where they should get them from."
Sounds basic and low stakes, but with how low the stakes are in HGS a conflict like this would spice it up.

One of the things I don't like about this show is the beginning. From what I learned writing-wise, in the beginning you're supposed to show what you want the audience to expect, and show at least some sort of conflict or long-term goal for the protagonists depending on if it's an episodic series or extending over an arc.
What I see in the first few episodes is a ham-fisted jumble of ideas that don't summarize to anything interesting because of the lack of clarification. Another irritating thing is the flexible descriptions of the "magics" so that they can make up bull as the show goes on. They don't introduce any rules to ground the limitations of the characters' abilities or any scale of what the characters can do in the story other than "ooh this is a warrior" or "ooh this is a blacksmith".
Also why in the hell is there a blacksmithing class in an academy where these supposed "guardians" are learning how to protect people? (would make sense if they EXPLAINED WHAT IS A GUARDIAN)
At least it would make sense if it was an armor/weapon maintenance lesson, since they would probably be out on the road a lot, considering that someone said they based it off of D&D concepts, or so I heard.
And what annoys me the most is their excuse of "Oh we had a small budget sorry about that". You don't need a good budget to make a good story, you need good writers to make a good story. Sure, animation could be forgiven at least if the budget is small, but they could have at least better writing to make up for it.

I find it funny that the 4 main characters are not even named after spices but herbs. So shouldn't the show be named High Guardian Herb? Cause The writers where clearly high off their rockers when they created this series.
