    With naming the characters after the herbs from Scarborough Fair, I feel like they really missed out on color coding them by the flowers of the plants they're named for. Rosemary should be a blueish-purple, Sage a lavender, Thyme white, and Parsley green or yellow.

    It makes sense for the deer themed character to have vitiligo. Deer are prey animals who rely on camouflage for survival, and the vitiligo is reminiscent of the spots on a fawn, which are there to mimic the way sunlight filters through leaves in a forest. The vitiligo on Thyme could easily be justified as an evolutionary trait her people developed for survival, as it would help them blend into their environment.

      They are trying so hard to make it look progressive but it's not possible. It's only possible if racism, sexism, and LGBTQ+ hatred is in the world there otherwise the whole progressiveness is unnoticeable because it's normal. It goes into the flow with stuff that aren't in the minority. For example having a dark skin coloured people in a show with other skin coloured people makes it look more natural than if you put 1 black person because representation. It surely gives more attention to the character because it's the only one who is black. Same if we reversed it. Which is a way to actually focus on the progression, but it shows that it isn't natural.

      Apparently from what I gathered from clips of this "show", Sage lived in the countryside of her home island and was taught the ways of "old magic". A style of magic that is more traditional (proper knowledge of spell symbols, incantations and how to channel elements from the earth) and is forbidden to learn "new magic" (armor, weapons and items that have magic installed inside them like the magic items from Danmachi). In a way Sage plays a double meaning, Sage being a pun for the "spice" theme and Sages being hermits who avoid modern technologies and learn to harness the power of nature as well as appreciate the beauty of it. Though I'm probably just give this show too much credit.

      Yeah, I also think that her design in this show works pretty well with her character. It's not just "bland Halloween witch costume", I think of it more like a Puritan style of dressing (on which the witch trope has been based), which is very modest and bland on purpose, to not draw attention, to express humbleness, to be practical rather than attractive. It also fits Sage's character, considering that she's more introvert, shy, always nice and kind to everyone, very traditional (you know, the Old Magic stuff) etc. Her design, ironically, makes her stand out more when she's surrounded with characters wearing wacky costumes, by contrast. It also draws more attention to her face (which I find kind of cute) and her hair (which has a rather intense blue colour). Sure, they might have added some little details here and there to make it more interesting, and yet still not too much "in your face", but I can't complain, I like what I get.

      Yes!! For a show based on the idea of inclusion I didn’t really see a lot of disability related inclusion. We’re often forgotten. I think it’d be really cool to see a character with prosthetic limbs and it actually affects the, in world. In fantasy a lot of times people just cure their disability. Which sucks cause a lot of disabilities can’t be cured or even really treated.

      Nobody _ever_ thinks about disabilities (or even illnesses/medicines) in fantasy settings and it's a massive waste of potential. There are plenty more interesting and heartfelt ways to integrate it than just "idk magic cures everything lol."
      Like, is magical treatment expensive or limited? Are there any side effects? Do regular treatments and surgeries still exist? Is there anything that can't be cured _at all?_ What would a Guardian with a disability's daily life be like? It's an entire area of overlooked world building.

      I'm finding this video exceptionally late, so pardon the random comment, but I don't know if I can pick a favorite? Every single one of the redesigns you've made is stunning! The only one that doesn't capture my attention as much as the others is Parsley, and I still love her a lot anyway. Only thing is I kinda wish she was more blatantly muscular and also had some burns and/or scarring due to her blacksmithing work. (Edit: My mind is still on the cooking thing, so now, I'm imagining your design of Parsley carrying a huge cast iron skillet as a backup weapon. The idea may or may not have been inspired by Tangled. XD)
      This is probably a kinda random idea, but I'd be kinda curious to see what you'd do if you were asked to come up with a new look for DC's Harley Quinn. No particular reason, I'm just a huge fan of the character. After watching this video, I debated asking for your interpretation of how Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman would be portrayed in a magical girl setting (either as villains or as their own magical girl team), but I'm sure that would be a lot to do, so you don't have to worry about it if you don't think it's something you'd be willing to do. 😅

    • @AzariahMarinaStarcaster
      @AzariahMarinaStarcaster 3 года назад +5

      I'd consider the possibility of tiefling Parsley having a tail. Tieflings generally have long tails, and I think having a tail that she's able to hold things with would help her with both blacksmithing and taking care of her family. Having basically an extra hand in the form of a prehensile tiefling tail in those situations sounds like something that would be helpful. Plus maybe that one ridiculous idea I had about her using a cast iron skillet as a weapon can be one of the things she uses her tail for in battle XD

    • @AzariahMarinaStarcaster
      @AzariahMarinaStarcaster 3 года назад

      I was considering the idea that, even if your version of Parsley is a tiefling, it could be interesting if there was still some dwarven influence in her design somewhere. Like maybe she was adopted by dwarves, has a dwarven mentor who she learned blacksmithing from, or is just generally fascinated by dwarven culture. I mainly bring this up because I remember you saying you gave Thyme a viking inspired hairstyle, but I mentally associate vikings with dwarves, so I thought something like that might suit Parsley whether she's a dwarf or a tiefling who low key wishes she was a dwarf.
      (Also sorry I keep dumping random ideas here. I think about these redesigns way more than I probably need to ^^;)

    I'm just gonna list off the random thoughts that went through my head while watching this. (Numbers 4, 5, 6 and 8 are probably the most important ones tbh)
    1. A magical girl show that has something to do with cooking would be pretty awesome! I also remember having an idea for a magical girl team themed after cheerleaders. Not sure if that's a thing already, but it would be cool to see.
    2. As basic as it is, I really love the whole aspect of a school made to train the next generation of magical heroes. I don't know what it is, but it's a premise that always immediately catches my attention.
    3. You made Rosemary basically look like a strawberry and I love that!
    4. Would it be safe to guess that Sage's prosthetics are made of wood? If the nature theme is gonna be as heavy as it is with her especially, seems like wooden prosthetics would make sense. Also, considering that the word "sage" can also describe a wise, intelligent person, I have to imagine this character is the bookworm, valedictorian type of character.
    5. Parsley looks slightly more likely to be the feisty hothead than Rosemary. If not for the inherent desire/expectation for the pink character to be the main character of the story, I would probably say Parsley should be the protagonist instead just because I feel like she'd have the most to prove out of all of them. Rosemary has the issue with her mom, sure, but whether it's Parsley's dwarven self or your tiefling variant of her, there's a level of stigma surrounding what she is (especially in the case of tieflings due to their devilish/demonic heritage), and I think she'd be a more interesting character to closely follow in a story like this.
    6. If you did switch Parsley and Rosemary's roles around (or just had the two more obviously share the protagonist spot), I kinda imagine it's because Parsley inspired Rosemary to become a guardian. Maybe Rosemary originally wanted nothing to do with the adventuring life both due to her mother's disappearance and because she grew up on xenophobic propaganda against non-humans, but Parsley somehow helps Rosemary and saves her life when they're both still young, which completely changes her mind on the idea.
    7. I never knew vitiligo also had the capacity to impact hearing and eyesight. Thank you for adding that bit of information in the video! ❤️
    8. I know the whole thing about Thyme keeping arrows in her hair was a joke, but I want that to be an actual thing now. I just want part of her magic to be that she has a small pocket dimension in her hair that she used to exclusively use as a space for her arrows, but as she slowly and begrudgingly becomes the team mom figure in the group, she regularly keeps her friends personal items in there or finds that one of them put something in her hair without asking her first 🤣

    • @AzariahMarinaStarcaster
      @AzariahMarinaStarcaster 3 года назад +5

      Bonus Note 1: I just realized most of these girls could potentially be the associated with one of the Greek deities. Mainly Hecate for Sage, Hestia and/or Hephaestus for Parsley, and Artemis for Thyme. Rosemary's aesthetic makes me think of Aphrodite, but her actual demeanor would be more likely to be attributed to either Athena or Nike.
      Bonus Note 2: Tieflings tend to have long, prehensile tails, which I think would be really helpful for Parsley to have. Basically having an extra hand seems like it would be a good thing for a character who both does blacksmithing and takes care of most of her family. 👍🏾
      Bonus Note 3: I keep imagining Thyme having powers that specifically allow her to listen to the voices of the forest (primarily the plants), and since I've learned from this video that vitiligo can cause visual impairments and/or hearing problems, I want to say that Thyme lived in the forest at first and this magic helps her see or hear better. Having to move to a city to attend the academy makes it significantly more difficult for her to see or hear as well as she usually would in the woods, so her general irritability is due to the fact that she's not fully been able to figure out how to cope with this yet.
      Bonus Note 4: The concept of Rosemary growing up on xenophobic pro-human propaganda made me imagine that maybe her family is/was involved with a cult. Like they lived in a village where a human only cult had a lot of political power, and maybe the mother's disappearance had something to do with the cult, but Rosemary was only told that her mother was gone because (insert non-human species here) took her away while she was on a mission and ate her. So because of this, Rosemary never wanted to become an adventurer/guardian in the first place because she believed throwing herself into danger and mingling with non-humans would get her killed.
      Bonus Note 4.5: Relating back to the last point, Rosemary's mind changes the day she meets Parsley. I'm not sure exactly how they'd end up crossing paths, but I do know Parsley would say something that Rosemary's mother always used to say, which would roughly be something like "If you have the ability to help somebody, help them. Whatever it takes. It's the right thing to do." Rosemary only ever applied this mentality to other humans, but hearing Parsley say this after saving her makes her consider that maybe her mother's advice could also apply to non-humans. That idea comes back up when the cult tries to kidnap Parsley because Rosemary ends up returning the favor and saving Parsley, which makes it so the two of them have to run for their lives, which lands them in the city where the academy is. Alternatively, Rosemary could be already part of the cult and be assigned to go to the academy to destroy both it and the city it was built in because it represents cooperation between humans and non-humans, and such an idea needs to be destroyed at its source. Running into the kind tiefling blacksmith again and spending enough time at the academy slowly changes her mindset, but she knows betraying the cult probably means death, so her morals, her upbringing, and her desire to survive all start pulling her in different directions as she tries to figure out who she wants to be and what she's supposed to do.
      Bonus Note 5: Similarly to how Parsley and Rosemary's backstories overlap, Sage and Thyme's backstories could overlap slightly as well. Nature seems to be the strongest theme in the two of them in particular, and I found out through someone's review that there's a magical rot plaguing Thyme's home that a witch organization doesn't want stopped, and I think those two things could bind Thyme and Sage together. Thyme is aware that witches had something to do with the rot, so when she sees Sage in her forest one day, she thinks this might be one of the witches who caused it, but she finds out Sage really loves nature and is trying to fix the problem. There comes a point where some witches come and try to clear out Thyme and get family, and Sage uses an experimental and volatile spell to both get the evil witches to go away and clear a significant portion of the rot away, but because Thyme doesn't see Sage anywhere afterwards, she assumes Sage died in the blast. Thyme's family largely dislikes witches at this point, and though Thyme mostly shares the same sentiment, she is at least aware that good witches can exist and could be powerful enough to save their home. She goes to the city and enrolls in the academy so she can both learn to protect her home better and maybe find a kind witch that can help her, only to find Sage and see that she has prosthetic limbs now. Feeling guilty because she's certain Sage lost her arm and leg when she last saw her, Thyme decides she owes Sage a life debt and goes out of her way to protect her as much as she can. In exchange, Sage promises to devote as much time as she can to figuring out how her spell can be used again without causing significant harm to herself or others again.
      Bonus Note 6: I imagine both Sage and Thyme had some kind of run-in with the cult that raised Rosemary as well. The cult probably specifically wants Parsley and Thyme because they don't want their infernal and fey power to be used against them, so Rosemary may eventually be forced to betray her own team if it'll keep the cult from taking her life.

      A concept that I'll probably never do, but would love to make/see, would be a magical girl show that focuses on a premise similar to your number 2: a school that trains the next wave of warriors, but one that would focus less on the girls coming of age, but on the "mothers" raising them. It would touch on the classic coming of age theme, but would also touch on adult concepts like it being okay to pass the torch to the next generation, but also to reestablish hope for the future.
      Inspired by the lack of "motherhood" shows, the annoying concept that magical girls are only for little girls, and the fact I loved the adults being useful in Naruto.

      @@nekotoxin8039 I disagree on the Crunchyroll part, but I still don't think the Owl House _looks_ like an anime. Anime characters are usually drawn like real people, they do exaggerate for the sake of the style but they're still based on the figure of a real person, and while the Owl House does seem to have different body types that are close to real people, the noticeable differences are that it falls under the same category of having the framework of the characters already exaggerated and meant to be in a more childish or chibi way, like the head being bigger than the length of the shoulders or torso. That's why it seems more closely to Gravity falls or Steven Universe, their framework was already exaggerated despite having realistic touches/details to them.
      And even though you find examples of anime characters that are under the category - _Most_ anime's emphasise that the characters' framework are based off of a real person's framework, but with some exaggerated touches. Basically the opposite of the Owl House, having a realistic framework with exaggerated touches.
      The closest you can get to an anime is perhaps the Legend of Korra, The Boondocks and Trese, and they all completely look unlike the Owl House just for the fact that they're more realistically built.

    For sage I think we could push the whole "mutilated" thing a little bit more. What if the prostetics aren't "magical" and are just pieces of wood? As a result of her condition she could have entered a symbaiotic relationship with the vines that cover half her body: she feeds it magical energy to keep it alive and in exchange she gets to control the vines, the prostetics being a vest/armour/puppets that the vines get in or around and actually move. This way we can even give her non-human prostetics with all sort of useful tools, all she has to do is to leave the prostetic then grab with her vines the new one

  • @megarakadmea

    With the nature witch + prosthetic idea: what if it’s a wooden prosthetic or generally made of a living plant? She can have it hold hand shape or change it when she needs it to. It could also be somewhat symbiotic with her since she’s lost a limb. Maybe if you want a dark angle it’s got roots in her skin, feeds on her blood, that sort of thing.

    humans have stripes like tigers do, they are just about the same color as the rest of our skin so it's mostly invisible to us, cats on the other hands see our stripes very easily.
    But how does this relate to the video:
    Thyme, she having vitiligo would be backed up by the stripes in humans and evolution of her people living in the woods and the necessity to blend in the environment for both defence against predators and for hunting. So it would make SCIENTIFIC SENSE to give her this. Also antlers are a really good weapon on the animal kingdom.

    W.i.t.c.h., an Italian Disney comic, is created by Elisabetta Gnone, a woman, and it's much better than High Guardian Spice. It was created in 2001 and ended in 2012. It was very VERY popular among the masses (even boys read it), because it didn't use "created by a woman" as a selling point. Markets wanted only to sell a unique story and it worked. It's still loved by its fans.

    Making Parsley a tiefling is actually genius because it adds a whole lot more to her character. Tieflings in DnD came about because somewhere down the line, someone either made a deal with a fiendish entity or had a baby with a tiefling, but the latter doesn't always guarantee tiefling baby. So after a few generations of normal babies, you suddenly have a tiefling baby (though tiefling dwarves are rather rare).

    These designs are so much more pleasing! Though one thing is usually (from my archery experience and seeing other archers and designs) the left arm (or the one that holds the bow depending on eye dominance) is uncovered. The bow string is too likely to get caught on fabric and bulky materials! Good archers know how you extend their arm the right way so the string won't snag on your skin, but the same can't be said for bulky and loose materials.
    The thought and effort into the design is amazing though and I didn't think anyone would think of the bow string snagging on something.

    For Rosemary you could have instead done a design where she wears a Curas and a shoulder guard like the first magic armor gear Hikaru, Umi and Fuu wear in Magic Knight Rayearth. It would allow a decent starting point for her and with Parsly being a forgemaster's assistant ( not shown in trailer) allows room for the armor to grow with the character.
    With Parsley you could have made her more goblin like in design ( like the original description of dwarves in Norse mythology) but instead show her being a tinkerer of magical constructs as opposed to old fashioned set in their ways dwarves. And a good insult maker wouldn't hurt the character.
