My first time watching Tremors (1990). I don't think I've seen one quite like this. It took me a second to click with the flick, but oh my gosh it was a blast! (at some points quite literally) I hope you enjoy my Tremors movie reaction & Commentary

Let me know your thoughts on Tremors! Are any of the MANY sequels worth checking out?
upto 3 is great, but any with more BURT GUMMAR is great
Every single one, the quality waxes and wanes. The only thing everyone can agree on, this one was the best.
I personally dont care for the 4th one at all but it's a prequel
always enjoy your enthusiasm....and then you took a sip out of your spiderman cup...lol
@@rafaelrosario5331 right? Hes authentic in his reactions so it keeps me coming back. It's that charisma or something
What I love about the design of the Graboids is how natural they look. Not overly edgy or monstrous, they look like something you’d really find out in the animal kingdom. Cause if you look through her gallery enough, you find plenty of strange critters, both in the present and the past.
The thing about this movie that I love, is while the script takes digs at the characters, nobody is stupid -- even the kids, really. A lot of horrorish movies are driven by characters doing something just dumb as hell. It makes a horror comedy seem strangely realistic.
I disagree. The dude that sat on the truck tire was definitely stupid.
@@WarrChan I was gonna say that too lol There were a few stupid moments. Like movie woulda been over in first 5 mins if it was me cuz I woulda drove to the next state the first weird thing that happened lol
THIS part! Yes! The script was written with a nuance of silliness and comedy, but they also got the perfect actors to bring those characters to life in a realistic way so they weren’t cartoonish. It would’ve been very easy to have all of these people be complete caricatures 🙌
@@WarrChan as much as one could call that stupidity, I could also be chalked up to blind panic.
@@WarrChan
Pretty sure that dude was just to afraid to think clearly
Great reaction! I love this flick- it's JAWS but in the desert. (And funnier.)
Tremors 2-4 are very enjoyable too, 5-7 are just SyFy channel shlock
One plus of the next two sequels is that each introduces a different life-stage of the graboids that are completely different from the giant wormlike forms, and all have the same quirky humor of this film. The fourth one is also interesting in that it's a *western*. Five and beyond are less well-made however and the short-lived TV series is... strange and confusing if you don't watch them in production order (they were aired wildly out of order on the Syfy channel and that in itself doomed the series.
I hate when networks air shows out of order and mess up the continuity. Why do they do this?!
@@CasualNerdReactions Supposedly had to do with ratings, but in this case it proved a very bad idea. Audiences were confused (i know I sure was) because the events of the second shown episode referred to events in an episode they wound up not showing for many weeks afterward. Totally made no sense in both senses of the word.
fun fact the Girl that played mindy the one on the pogo stick, was in Jurassic Park she was the hacker Lexx
For me the reason why this movie is so great is because of the chemistry between the two leads. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are awesome together. RIP Fred, you were a great actor and will be missed.
Ward really great as Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff, too.
And Burt of course.
Loved your reaction, should definitely watch the second. The second one is still worth watching. After that... Well. Either way is optional, but if you do watch the second. Definitely... Optional.
One of the things I absolutely love about this movie is that when the scientist starts explaining, everyone just nods and says, "Whatever, you're the expert we believe you." Its a great contrast to all those monster movies where nobody believes the scientist until its too late.
That’s a great point!🤣
One of the rare other movies with that reputation (the authorities and general populace believe the scientists right off) is the 1966 film ISLAND OF TERROR starring Peter Cushing. A weird, eerie little movie I wouldn't mind seeing someone react to.
Also that she doesn't just magically know everything, honestly she doesn't really know much more than they do, just a thing or two about seismology and the geology of the valley (where the dirt and rock is). Scientist characters are _notorious_ for knowing things that when you think about it they really _shouldn't_ know, just because the writer needs the characters to know it.
Tremors is a great creature feature/horror comedy. Everyone does a great job, but Burt steals the movie with his rec room scene. Be sure not to miss the sequel for more of the late great Fred Ward (Earl).
Clearly, Michael Gross wanted to go
for a change of pace after having
been so long associated with
playing a peacenik/flower child
on TV's "Family Ties".
@@laustcawz2089 And he seems to love the character, given the quantity of sequels
Kevin Bacon said it was a shock to see "Mr. Keaton" carrying a rifle and yelling his head off.
Before this movie, Michael Gross was best known for the sitcom Family Ties, where he and his wife are left wing former hippies in contrast to their conservative son Alex (the breakout role of Michael J. Fox). Which of course makes a hilarious contrast to his role in these films. He actually starting shooting this one literally 24 hours after filming wrapped on the final Family Ties season.
"Tremors": The little B-movie that reached the A-level with Humor, Horror and Romance. Kevin Bacon made this movie during a downturn in his movie career. For years he was: "Yeah, I made 'Tremors." These days it's "Hell Yeah I made "Tremors!";) Actor Michael Gross went from "Prepper Joke" to "Badass Burt Gummer" throughout the series.
Burt, Actually becomes a beloved character in all of the Tremors franchise. And Fred ward is in the second one..I'm glad to see you had fun watching this. Take care!.xx
"Broke into the wrong goddamn rec room, didn't ya you bastard!"
Part of the backlash this movie got (and currently gets), is that people judge the movie on the mislabeled "horror" genre. It's a "creature feature" movie, which is a subgenre of action/adventure.
Fun Fact: S.S. Wilson said that he got the idea for the film while he was working for the U.S. Navy in the California desert. While resting on a rock, he imagined what it might be like if something underground kept him from getting off the rock.
Land Jaws Fact: When Chang is partially swallowed by the Graboid, it swerves back and forth before drawing back under the ground. It's almost identical to the scene near the end of Jaws where Quint slides into the mouth of the giant shark and it swings back and forth with him in its mouth before sliding back into the water.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: Burt and Heather used the following firearms to kill the Graboid that burst into their rec room: Stey-Mannlicher SSG-PII, Winchester model 70, Winchester Model 1200 Defender, HK91A2, Colt AR-15 Sporter II, Remington 870, Sig Sauer P226, Ruger Redhawk, M8 flare gun, and then finally Burt finishes it off with a Belgian William & Co. 8 gauge shotgun (The Elephant Gun).
Great distinction on genre!
Chris ...And what gets me, is that people want to die on the "This Is A Horror Movie!" hill for some reason. I keep telling them there's no honor in insisting that this is a horror movie, because they don't have a case. Any movie enthusiast or critic that's not pushing an agenda, will tell you this is not a horror movie.
I shouted that once after killing a rattle snake that somehow made its way into my kitchen.
Further gun fact: Both Michael Gross and Reba McEntire dislike guns being "glorified." So they insisted on demonstrating safe and proper gun handling at all times, even in the insane situation they're in throughout the movie. This is best seen near the end, where Burt gives Melvin an empty revolver to get him to move. He takes back the gun-which he _knows_ is empty, and checks that it's clear anyway, .
Winswalker57 ...And I know many 2nd Amendment and Self-Defense defenders (myself included), appreciate their efforts. It is one of the many reasons why this ranks high on my favorite movies.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
1:39 A little detail I always liked that, out of Val's list of attractive female attributes, Rhonda does actually possess one and it's the least objectifying: she DOES have big green eyes.
Walter Chang was played by Victor Wong. You could do worse than to watch his whole filmography, with such cult-classics as "Big Troulble In Little China", The Golden Child," "The Prince Of Darkness," "Mystery Date," and "The Last Emperor." Some have fond memories of him from the "Three Ninjas" films, though they were a bit after my time. RIP Mr. Wong.
After Burt and Heather kill the graboid in their basement, they would have been deaf for a while. Whenever I watch it, I replace their dialogue by yelling "What?? What??" at the screen.
I have such a fun life.
It's an old 1950's monster/alien movie knock-off that did surprisingly great thanks to it being a solid movie with a solid cast.
If you wanna react to the whole 7 movies, you have at least one view guaranteed. But seriously tho, I hope you do at least till the third one.
A fun valentine to '50s & '60s sci-fi creature features - DynamicDuo of Bacon and Ward (who we just lost a few weeks ago). Great job/choice Chris.
a movie that really has it all. I hope no one ever decides to "enhance" it with modern computer effects. The later films in the series made it clear, that good actors and a script make a good movie; not the effects.
When this came out, I believe it was Reba McEntire's first acting role, so that was fun. And Michael Gross was known as the nice, sensitive dad on Family Ties so casting him as the gun-loving doomsday prepper was genius.
Love that he got to play against type and what a success!
This was the first monster movie I Saw growing up on the Navajo Nation! It's one of my favorites!
Screenwriters Brent Maddock and SS Wilson were in the Navy, they were sitting on a large rock in a Nevada Test Site, they were taking notes and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus Tremors was born.
Perfect movie to watch if you just want to have a good time. I can understand why Kevin Bacon thought while filming it his career would be over but when you see it you are just won over by the cast chemistry along with all the other elements of the movie and just enjoy yourself.
Kevin Bacon wasn't enthused about the movie, he admits he just took it because the Footloose money was running out.
This has always been just a perfect movie in my opinion. Great characters, some scares, some comedy, some adventure, amazing creature design and the practical special effects are amazing. One of my all time favorite movies. Fun every time.
RIP Fred Ward, you will be missed. 😔
#2 is a great sequel.
This film has elements from so many different genres.
B-monster horror film, science fiction, buddy comedy, westerns, some minor romance with Val and Rhonda, some mystery at the start as they try to figure out what these monsters are. Yet leaving the origin of the graboids ambiguous (until the sequel) as that information is less important to the plot; this is a story about a town working together to survive and less about defeating the monster.
Hey Chris, ❤️ love your work 😀. 1978 Coma stars Michael Douglas from a Michael Chriton book, I just saw Genevieve Bujold in 1980 Last Flight of Noah's Ark, thanks!
Filmed in one of my favorite places... California's Owens Valley 🙂
Tons of movies have been filmed there... since the 1930's.... Even Gladiator filmed one scene there... and Maverick.
Another set and filmed there is Trial And Error with Jeff Daniels and Michael Richards.
I can't believe nobody ever noticed 19:54 before. The kid literally echoed Bill Paxton's character in "Aliens"
Specifically, "Game over man, Game over!"
To clarify, the graboid did not 'know' that Burt and Heather's car was there. It was just a coincidence that it moved under it just then but the movement set off the alarm and then it _did_ know that there was something there to attack.
Yeah, it was just circling the building, but after it jostled the car and set the alarm off, the noise was enough to get it to finish the job.
Oops, 1977 Robin Cook book with Chriton screenplay, haha cookbook
Burt's the man! He's in all the sequels. If the balloon goes up and you're not a "Burt" it would be helpful to know somebody who is.
This movie brings me such joyful memories of my childhood. The whole family, even our household help will sit down and enjoy this one every time it was on
Haven't even watched the video yet but this a favorite of mine and I'm looking forward to watching
Good creature feature that holds up and solid cast going for it makes it fun 🍿😀
Watching the sequels is fun to all the way through at least once
Fun, funny and exciting movie.
The graboids can in fact tell when they need to turn due to a cliff. But the bombs were so loud it disoriented it and drove it off. Also please check out through four. After that they're not that great
in coming up with things to say about this movie, let me help you out.
This movie is noteworthy for many reasons, all of which contribute to why so many people love this movie so much: Not only does it have smart witty writing, perfect pacing, and great humor...
But as far as horror movies go, it is also one of the _very_ few horror movies that takes place almost entirely in daylight (so it doesn't rely on darkness for its scares), and all of the characters in this movie are likable in their own way, not cliched stereotypes, and most importantly, they all make smart decisions.
In many horror movies, the plot and the script need to make the characters stupid or remove their common sense in order to create situations where they will die: so they don't call the police when they should, a killer is chasing them but they run to a different room in the building instead of running out the door, they go to investigate places on their own instead of with others, etc....
But in this movie, all of the characters make smart decisions given the situation and do things that most people _would_ actually do in that same situation.
If you haven't seen it then I _strongly_ recommend putting the movie Lake Placid on your next poll, because it is a perfect companion to this movie, and another underappreciated horror movie with incredibly smart, and very, VERY funny writing.
Great points! You’re right, they definitely made pretty reasonable choices compared to another recent film I watched 🤣 I’ll look into lake placid, could be fun!
Lake Placid is worth it for Betty White alone!
I agree 100% Lake Placid is amazing Bill Pullman Bridget Fonda Betty White it just doesn't get any better than that!
Lake Placid is the polar opposite of this film, where EVERYONE makes stupid decisions. I also can't believe someone with this insightful of a comment said it has good writing. "You are a mental." ??
@@TheBlott2319
Look you can feel free to disagree, but in my opinion, it _does_ have smart and funny writing.
That _doesn't_ mean that I think the characters in that movie are smart... quite the opposite in fact - I agree that they behave very stupidly throughout. But overall, it is my personal opinion (and apparently the opinion of many others) that the movie is a very enjoyable and fun experience to watch.
Omg. Omg. Omg. Soooo happy you are watching this! One of my top favorite buddy classics!!❤
When Val & Earl are packing up their stuff, we see a sign that shows Earl's last name as Basset. In the credits, he's listed as Earl Bass. In the DVD subtitles, it's shown as Basser. I have to wonder if they're deliberately messing with his name!
They must have, right? They would mess up a detail like that I’m sure.
They must have, right? They would mess up a detail like that I’m sure.
Classic Chris: "Her hoppity-hop got bittidy-bit." Nice job my friend. Alway fun watching your reactions.
I loved your reaction! You were so animated seemed to be having such a great time. ^^ Tremors is my favorite horror/monster series of all time. some people will say that the next movies aren't worth but personally, I love them. Number 3 is my favorite. Each movie builds on the lore and life cycle of the monsters. it's great. it's just awesome cheesy monster fun. They're honestly feel good movies. the entire series
Definitely a good time! One day I’ll revisit the series, when I just need to have some fun!
Kevin Bacon was so good in this 👍
If you liked *Tremors,* you should watch *Arachnophobia,* it has a very similar feel.
Must check out the others!!!!
Love Tremors! Did you recognize the little girl? A few years after this she played Lex in Jurassic Park.
Each Tremors is o.k. unless compared with the original (featured) in which case they are not-very-good fun.
Favorite Chris line: "Oh man, her Hoppity-Hop got Bittity-Bit!"
I love this movie 🥰
Love how this movie constantly does the opposite of traditional horror tropes. Set during the day, the creatures are thinking animals and not mindless, there are two reveals (the ‘snake’ and then the ‘worm’), keeping all the characters on their toes (ha) w/ their problem solving, it being a cat and mouse situation, the characters are well written and not completely dumb or incompetent, they don’t have all the answers to what the creatures are, not over explained, and there are more than one of the monsters out and about rather than just a singular one for the first movie and more showing up for the sequel. Pretty unique to say overall.
This was Reba's first movie and it's the only only one she said she ever regretted. Her son Shelby was still small when this came out and it was rated R so Shelby couldn't watch it. SHe said she'd never again make a movie that her son couldn't watch.
In my considerable opinion this is one of the best samples of practical effects I have ever seen. Total vermissisillitude. I can't spell that word but it fits.
tremors rules!
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😀
Lol @ "This is particularly not good!"
The sequel isn’t bad, Tremors 2 the worm turns.
This is a great pizza movie. Invite a few friends over. Have a good time.
23:35 "Once people started dropping off ... it was a ton of fun."
Rip Fred Ward. Loved these movies since I was a kid
And yes, that is Reba McIntyre...
I was so young when i saw this the first time, I as scared of the ground for a while. lol
A nicely made fun horror movie . I still prefer the real deal when it comes to horror but this was fun .
Kevin Bacon’s best role.
This is how you take a B-grade creature feature and turn it into an A.
Characters, script, fantastic practical effects. Never saw dirt wrangling done so well. Everyone loves this movie when they see.
Excuse me... now I am going to go play The Floor is Lava.
Well said! 👏
The sequels are not great, but they all have a certain charm.
I miss you Fred Ward and Victor Wong....😥😢😢😢
On September 11 2001 Victor Wong and his wife Rose spent the day trying to get news of Wong's sons who lived in New York City (they were unharmed) after Rose went to sleep, Wong stayed up to continue for the news, he died of a heart attack at some point during the early hour of September 12 2001 he was 75
I have fond memories of this
Tremors. True classic.
It has a lot of sequels, 7 or 8 movies total
This is one of the best-in-class creature features ever. I can vouch for the next 3 movies. Tremors 1-4 are a lot of increasingly goofy fun. 1 and 2 are particularly good, so I do highly recommend the next one.
This movie is awesome
The best thing about this movie is that it’s a great way to gently introduce younger viewers to scary movies without throwing them into the deep end.
Ooh yes! We need stuff that is in between comedies and pure horror
Fred Ward could have been Jon Bernthal's father 😀 They really look alike
I love Tremors, it's one of my favourite films. The monsters are dangerous without being unstoppable, and there isn't just one cheap trick to defeating them. The people are pretty clever once they figure out the rules, and aside from Melvin they're likeable. The sequels are good too, and even the TV series is fun, even if it's a bit wackier than the films.
Just so you know, that curly-haired redhead is Reba McIntyre!!
ty for this vid. this movie is like Jaws on land..i have very mixed feelings about this movie.. its scary.. funny..what..i dont know. sequels are even more crazy.. and i think there is TV series of Tremors , o boy. ty so much.
I hate when my hoppity hop gets bittity bit.
It is most unpleasant.
I love the Tremor movies. They even made a TV series about it that my mother still has, the complete series.
This movie has got a lot of setups and payoffs that doesn't feel like forced. Scenes feel legit as well, not put there because they were required by the story to happen. Other than that, it has everything: adventure, mystery, comedy, a little bit of romance, and worms that aren't completely stupid and can develop new strategies. They've made two more if I remember correctly, but they weren't as good as this one.
The Pogo stick girl is the hacker girl in Jurassic Park.
A theory (and personal head canon) I’ve seen is that the Graboids are of the cephalopod family and made the jump to the land much like how the ‘fish’ did all those millions of years ago.
this movie is even better when you realize its all practical effects, even the camera through the dirt. the entire movie series is worth watching and even the tv show with its miniscule budget.
Tremors always makes me think of The Burbs, a classic early Tom Hanks flick
Omg I just watched this for the first time too and loved iiiit! 😍
“Are we sure that’s all of them?” Well… there are 6 more movies in the franchise.
I think the cool 'lights in the air' are called 'stars'. ;)
My Favorite Chris one-liners from this reaction:
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Is that Reba McIntyre?
He said, “I’m Dead.” Heh. Not yet buddy, give it a few.
Yo, listen to the horse! He may know something you don’t!
You’re not supposed to eat the horses!
I don’t think you can run fast enough fellas. I mean you should try, obviously.
Oh! Y’all dumb.
Cause it’s not stupid.
She doesn’t know she’s not his type. What’cha gonna do?
Go! Make haste friends!
Her hoppity-hop got bitity-bit!
I liked him. I didn’t know his name but I liked him.
Burt & Heather, may God have mercy on their souls.
Oh, this would be easier if they were dumb.
Well, unfortunately, I think the new plan is EVERYBODY DIES!
Run! Don’t stop and look you, Dingus!
He’s not gonna get got…Oh, frick he’s gonna get got.
My instinct was to yell “Yippy Kai Yay” but, you know, that’s a different franchise.
I’m dying. 🤣🤣 It’s weird to see it types out like this
love this movie now 8 legged freaks and lake placid go full monster cheese
...Jim had the car keys in his pocket
A note for this is Stephen Spielberg helped with this movie. You can see his touches with certain camera movements, dialogue, and creature design
That’s pretty cool!
PSA: I just grabbed the box set of all 7 DVDs at Walmart for $20.
Nice find!!
love your stuff man keep it up
Val:🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨
Earl: 😐😳🙄
listen... I remember seeing only one part of this movie as a kid and it was the scene with the guy on the telephone wire. I grew up in the Mojave desert and I never even saw the monsters but as a little kid I remember being traumatized bc the man in the tower was so scared he couldn't get down and just died.
I couldn't even watch this movie until I was an adult and then I laughed bc I didn't even know it was a comedy. (I still truly hate the premise bc the wide open desert is scary enough without those lil mfs. lol
Haha amazing how different things hit as a kid, especially without context!
R.I.P. Fred Ward.
Ah yes, the film that made me nervous to go outside lol.
Tremors. Doing to dirt what jaws did to water. 😨
