The Safekeep: It is 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is truly over. Living alone in her late mother’s country home, Isabel knows her life is as it should be-led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest, to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late, walks loudly through the house, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house-a spoon, a knife, a bowl-Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel’s paranoia gives way to infatuation-leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva-nor the house in which they live-are what they seem.

Definitely agree on how sometimes the book is beautifully subtle, and how sometimes it can strike an odd balance between being overly subtle or overt about certain things.
I’m slowly thinking back on this book more fondly than when I read it. I think you’re right, and that a re-read is necessary.
I DNF'd it shortly after the 3rd act, pretty much for the reasons you gave. Since you thought the book as a whole worked, I may go back and finish it
As a Dutch person, its really funny to see the international reaction to this book. Because I have the feeling that here in the Netherlands this book is considered mostly as kitsch. Maybe fun for one read, but not suited for any literary prize what so ever. So I really laughed out loud when I saw it on the shortlist.
I think you are simply jealous of her achievements.
@@artisttable5139 Actually I havent read the book, so personally I dont have an opinion about its contents. I just try to give some inside on the reception of this book here in the Netherlands, which was, as far as I know, lukewarm at best. So for me its funny to see such a warm reception of this book in other places. What that says about her achievements is up for you to decide.
YAY!!!! I loved this so much! There are so many bleh books on this list and this was a refreshing change of pace for Booker 2024.
I totally agree about the ending, and where the book should have ended. I think I enjoyed the first half the most, all the tense atmosphere and Isabel's inventory lists!

Although I could see the twist from space I still enjoyed this book quite a bit And it is my second favorite so far after my friends.
Also the author basically ripped the main storyline from a famous Dutch short story. So make of that what you will.
