All Dan Brown 😄
For the record, I was influenced. I went to the website and did some shopping. I’m still riding on the fumes of “Who Wants to be a Booktuber” part two. I also recently picked up Alyssa’s rec “Cobalt Red” because “somf and tell me I’m pretty…Bob…Bob…Bob” might be the most iconic line in booktube history. Post US election, this is now how I choose books. Every day should be booktuber trivia day.
i want someone to make a special edition fitzcarraldo dan brown -- this is the art for our time
Ahhhh, great choices! And they’re so pretty!
Enjoy!
Good authors, quality books.
They look even better when you open them! It’s funny that I bought 4 as well - and 3 of them were the same as yours! In my box I had Flights, Years, Hurricane season and Septology. Enjoy!
Your boxcutter skills are dazzling. Honestly I think their books look a lot better softcover, but I'm glad you were able to get nice editions of some of your favorite books. I typically find the page spray tacky (see it on a lot of pretty terrible books at Barnes & Noble where I work) but the pages on these remind me of marbled paper and are quite well done. I bet these will inspire some rereads.
Maybe Disco King should read the Echomaker and Overstory. He sounds like a fool and an idiot!
So this is great. I thought it was me. I thought that I just wasn’t getting the artistry, the beauty of this book.
Thank you! Such a relief to hear an adequate opinion. Apart from non-existent plot and flat characters the novel contains open propaganda. I mean, it compares Sergei Krikalev (russian politician and a huge supporter of putin) to God. WTF???
Agree
Oscar & Lucinda is better than The True History of the Kelly Gang. This is me telling you I know something you don't. Cheers.
I haven't read Kairos. Sounds intriguing. Listening to your review, couldn't help but remember reading Gunter Gass' The Tin Drum.
I love your videos!
This is why so many people are leaving contemporary fiction, especially lately when prizes mean nothing.
you hit the nail on the head with ali smith 😭 wanted to like her so much but after reading the entire seasonal quartet i simply can’t do anymore
There was a time when SF authors got cross because their works were seen in a bad light... Orbital sounds SF style but maybe just a space vehicle for analysing the human condition... surely this has been done quite a few times already... so why then? Alien says it all, no need for much else ha ha.
Sounds like you missed the elephant in the room with It Lasts Forever. The narrator and most characters are grieving zombies.
Hmmm. Has she been reading some James Joyce and John Powys? Two other writers who dlighted in doing crazy literary shit. But she undoubtedly cannot be compared to anyone else really. I look forward to my copy arriving.
oh how i chuckled - is it bad that i’m now more intrigued by orbital than ever? i’m curious about this “pretty writing,” and whether i agree
The disappointment continues. It's not even a pretty cover.
As a wattpad writer I'm offended.
I like this sort of content from you because it gives me a window into your selection process for reading. I'm always interested in how other curate their tbr.
DiscoKing - two years in a row I’m in total agreement with you. Pretentious ‘oh look I’m so verbose and clever’ type of amateurish writing. Not near any sort of winner in my book. Really really bad choice. 👎👎👎
Can someone explain to me the Jack Edwards picture in the bunny mask???? I must be a terrible googler because I can't find anything online to explain how that came about.
The books you subject yourself to! I don't know what is stronger, my sympathy for your boredom or my delight in your razor sharp dismissal of this book. Well done.
You might be the only book critic that's worth listening to.
WOW!
oh boy, i'm going to read it cause i like to read the winner but i'm worried now since i 150% agreed with your stance on prophet song last year
AGREE👏 My vote was for Safe Keep. Although I didn't LOVE any of them so far.
Orbital felt like a writing exercise to me. One that should have just remained in her writing journal. It kills me that people think this is good writing just because it waxes rhapsodic about space. I agree that it was not profound at all. Right there with you in feeling wary of pretty writing in general.
do you think the jury could affect your decision to follow the booker going forward? i tended to share taste with a lot of this panel (i even had yiyun li as a prof in college lol) so i'm happy w/ the winner. regardless, i'm looking forward to the international booker, the panel looks OP next year (anton hur, beth orton, max porter)
Max Porter is one of my favorite authors, and he endorsed Orbital (as well as Sarah Moss, another favorite). That's why I read Orbital. Very puzzling as I agree with DiscoKing-did not like this book.
I wonder what a writing class would be like with you as the teacher! 😜
But who will I watch to see rage against the Booker Prize judges' dartboard-based selection method now?
I totally agree. Boring. No plot. No character development. No clever ideas. Just a disaster.
Mate! Don't hold back! 🤣
Thanks for the reaction! As a Ukrainian I’m deeply disappointed of booker choice. Seriously in the middle of the the war she picked to russians that mourn for soviets (regime actually killed millions of people) and tell that let’s seat and take hands to go to the moon 🤮 this message working well decades ago, the refusal to acknowledge the current reality where the war is actually happening disgust me a lot. I know that many people even don’t think that smth wrong here, but see Moscow right after Romania, feels like an author’s choice that booker praises in 2024.
AMEN
Controlled. Yes! I love a restrained read. James should’ve won. Gah.
💯 with you. But this reaction is the best thing about the announcement. I feel like the judges f£&ked up on this
"I have no interest in what she has to say about any topic" ANY topic? Wow. I double-checked whether she'd attacked a minority group or endorsed Trump or something. Seems you just didn't like the book. A bit much.
Tbf I'm sure she's a wonderful person, she seemed super nice in interviews
You are right. Two years in a row for shit winners. :-(
Orbital was mediocre and tired... Booker is again very disappointing
I'm so agree with you. I'll miss your Booker reviews next year.
Yeah, saw this video and was disappointed that ORBITAL won the Booker. But I would like a video like this next year, if only to have a place to commiserate over the terrible decision of the prize judges :(
0:56 1:10 😂😂😂
All the comments after this came from shorts. Not for your channel.
just found your channel, love to see an Aussie on booktube especially one who is not afraid to be a hater. Haven't read Orbital but I can't handle space whimsy either
3:14 - 3:18 👀
This is the reaction I was waiting for. 🌏🛰️
