YES! I agree with this so much. I loved The Shining because Jack's descent into that madness was so well done and you could follow and feel his struggle. I understand translating it into movie form can be hard, but when I first watched it and Jack had that evil/unsettling vibe from the beginning, I really didn't like it because that's now how he came across in the book to me. The movie can be enjoyed if you take it as is, but I'll always stand by that as an adaptation it is NOT a good one.
@@billiep1603 i read a quote in a review which was something along the lines of “the book is written by a man who has struggled with alcohol and can feel the evil corrupting him and the movie is directed by a man who grew up with an alcoholic for a farther and can feel the evil in the air” and honestly that changed my prospective on both the book and film

When you read King's 'On Writing', it is really crazy to think that Carrie was his first book published. The fact that he was a school teacher at the time too. It is so impressive how his first book is a horror classic. It almost makes me sad that we don't get the opportunity to be surprised by the story now since it's part of pop culture.
I was doing it this way until I started a RUclips channel and it derailed that plan. Read straight through Carrie to Tommyknockers then fell down the Wheel of Time rabbit hole and here we are. I admire this project idea.
Gav, have you heard of the podcast “Just King Things”? It’s a pair of dudes reading King in pub order and they do a deep dive into each book & it’s great. Gives some context for the time of publication and some of the reception of the books as well. A couple years ago I started reading King somewhat in pub order and that podcast was my fav way to close out each book!
I finally read The Shining in January and it effected me way more than I thought. I was in an 8 year long relationship with someone struggling with alcoholism and I saw so many things in that book that Wendy did or thought. It truly was so sad to me. But I really did like the book.
I really loved ‘Salem’s Lot because I loooove how King can write characters so well! This man wrote characters for a whole TOWN of people and each one felt unique! They seemed like real people instead of copy and paste of each other. I also felt like this book was a metaphor for how ‘big business’ comes in to destroy small towns. We have this wealthy man come in and inhabit the most iconic place of this hometown. Then he basically takes over, killing off the original residences of the town and sucks them dry of their resources. This is reminiscent of how a big business will come in and drive out the people who lived there first to make way for their own gains, and in return sucks the land and people dry.
Have you read the Tommy Knockers? It’s a similar vibe where a whole town is taken over (in some sense - no spoilers). I just finished it and I LOVED it
So, Ben Mears lived to be 55 years old. He wasn't 55 at the time of Salem's Lot. He was born in 1948, so yeah was 30ish during the events of Salem's Lot.

I loved hearing your empathy towards Carrie. It’s definitely a big theme that makes the story special to me too. I was bullied a lot in high school and a story like Carrie honestly gave me a lot of revenge fantasies when I was a kid. But now I look at the story with so much empathy and sadness for Carrie. The way you describe it really shows the different levels that story has. Also the made for TV version with Angela Bettis is one of my favorite adaptations. Her acting makes it my favorite version… and there’s an unexpected, semi-positive twist ending.
Rage gives me the feeling of putting a spotlight on teenage cruelty. Teenagers are cruel, and that cruelty is fueled by a desire for power. Charlie is the one in power, so naturally the other kids tey to please him and tell him what they want to hear. Then Ted becomes the scapegoat, the black sheep. Teenagers dont bully to please adults, they do it to get social points from one another.
I just finished The Shining for the first time! To me Tony was apart of Danny’s subconscious that he wasn’t ready to/couldn’t access fully at the time 😊

I love Salem's Lot as an exploration of the theme of the evil in small towns that King likes to go back to a lot in his horror. Just, how we know everyone in town so well and know the cruelty and darkness they're all capable of prior to the vampires descending on them is so good.

This is so fascinating, I love it 🥰 I haven’t read any of them. The Shining looks like the most interesting read to me. I can’t wait to watch the next episode 😊
Late as heck but, one of the reasons King reiterates the snow over and over is to emphasize how LONG winter is in places where snow comes October through May, especially in the high country. The snow. Never. Stops. By January, you're exhausted of grey and white and blue being the only colours in the word!
I think the convo around these books are more interesting than anything. Even if you are not into scary. Horror or spooky things. I can appreciate the convo these books spark
Soo excited for the next episode! The Long Walk is my favorite Stephen King book :D and I also never finished The Stand even though I liked it? And its my familys favorite King book, so I might have to reread that with you!
The Shining is one of my favorites. IT is still in my top ten books. I cannot wait for you to get to it, please watch the mini series! Tim Curry does Pennywise so much more book accurate, sarcastic and mocking.
I swear you read my mind about Carrie! I wrote a really in depth review of Carrie years ago, during my aspiring booktuber days. And you hit like every point I had outlined in that review. GET OUT OF HEAD! 😂
So excited for this series! I attempted all the books in pub order along with adaptations and made it pretty far before getting derailed by buddy reads but this will motivate me to get to the few I've missed! ❤
Thank you for the video and the upcoming schedule, I think it might be fun to read the ones I haven't yet and read along with you :) The Shining - A Tier - Pretty high up there, not my absolute favorite, but I saw the movie first and the movie is one of my favorite things in existence. Carrie - C Tier - Good story, but just not a story I enjoyed reading if that makes sense. Salems Lot - B Tier - People really like this book, and while I thought it was interesting, the vampire part was my least favorite. I liked the characters and the town a lot. Rage - Haven't read it yet
I didn't love The Shining either. That was the last book I read of Stephen King then I felt like I had enough. But hearing your perspective on Carrie makes me want to reread it and I am so excited for this series. You actually inspired me to read the rest of his books as well.
About The Shining: I do think the hedges turning their heads is scary as hell. It's like when you see a room full of manequins in a horror movie, you know something scary is gonna happen, but you never suspect the hedges would have the same mechanic
I have been anticipating this so hard since you announced it! Excellent video and I'm so stoked for the rest (even though I disagree about The Shining lol) 💜
Carrie is probably my favourite Stephen King book, partially of how short it is, but also because it feels so real to me. I'm from a somewhat similar background as the character Carrie, and was badly bullied. To me, it is for sure on of those inevitable tragedies, a build up to an explosion that could have prevented, but where so many around Carrie just made the worst choices that pushed her into tragedy. It was cathartic to read, in a way - being bullied throughout child- and teenhood can have life long consequences, the c-ptsd. the social struggles, the depression, or worse... In a literary context, it feels very cathartic to see the life long (/life ending) consequences affect the bullies as well as the bullied. Carrie is one of the few books I know that captures that feeling the most. (just to be crystal clear, literary catharsis in no way extends to excusing or, god forbid, endorsing real life tragedies. That's the great thing about literature. It lets us experience emotions from a safe detachment from reality, and maybe work through some of our baggage so that we can show up as our best selves in the real word)
Genuinely cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Doctor Sleep based on this reading of the Shining. Because the alcoholism is supposed to be the scary part not the murders.amd the sequel doubles down on that. I do agree that its not *scary* so much as horrifically tragic
OMG. I have never commented but I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and now you are reading my all time most favorite author Stephen King. I have been reading his book since I was 12 years old and love to see other people read them. Can’t wait to see all your reactions to his books.
I really dislike Kubrick's adaptation of 'The Shining' because it turns Jack into the villain although he's just mentally so unstable that he becomes an easy victim for the overlook which is the actual villain. Also, what I feel with a lot of King movie adaptations is that they cannot convey the characters in the same sense the books do. What I love about King are his well flushed out characters and really round characters; as you said also they feel very very real and every time I've watched a movie adaptation of his books they do not live up to that. And that's something that especially happened in the shining. Kubrick rid Jack of all his traits and though it is amazing visually, the sense of the story and its characters is somehow lost entirely. Anyway, loved the video, I am very excited for the next ones! :) Also, this made me want to reread 'Salem's Lot' so badly
@@noone-wq4fm i agree they get a loy wrong adapting king but when they get it right it's amazing! the green mile and the shawshank redemption are amazing powerful films that I could argue even surpass the source material
I'm SO EXCITED for this series, and so impatient for you to get to all the books. I'm like 75% of the way through his catalogue and it's taken me 15 years 😂😭 Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.
Tony showed Danny where to find the lost trunk, he showed Danny being chased by someone through the hotel. But then the hotel itself is blocking Tony from giving Danny messages.
One for the Road is two years after 'Salem's Lot, and Jerusalem's Lot is set around the 1850s. Also, King publishing under a secret name had more to do with the rate at which he was finishing books. His publisher was concerned that his fans would be fatigued by too many King books coming out so frequently, so he came up with Richard Bachman.
I say everyone deserves what they got ridiculing that poor girl Carrie. it's sad she has too die at the end and everyone treating her horrid. I'd seek vengeance too

Im so glad you've decided to do this series! I attempted to read Stephen King in publication order about 2 years ago now. I got about half way through The Stand when I realised I am just not a fan of Stephen Kings writing 😂
This is so fascinating, I love it 🥰 I haven’t read any of them. The Shining looks like the most interesting read to me. I can’t wait to watch the next episode 😊
Ooo if you read The Shining, I hope you enjoy it!
Late as heck but, one of the reasons King reiterates the snow over and over is to emphasize how LONG winter is in places where snow comes October through May, especially in the high country. The snow. Never. Stops. By January, you're exhausted of grey and white and blue being the only colours in the word!
i LOVE your long videos
Loved all the indepth thoughts on each book. It was really interesting to hear
Please read his memoir “on writing” it’s so good.
I think the convo around these books are more interesting than anything. Even if you are not into scary. Horror or spooky things. I can appreciate the convo these books spark
I have been waiting for someone to do this because I plan to do it. I’ll be following your journey. You got a new subscriber
Can’t wait for episode 2!
Thanks for the schedule ❤
I have 3 books to read for next time. Especially excited for The long walk
This is so exciting!! I started my Kronological King reading in 2020 and have made it through 27 novels so far with soo many to go 😅
Soo excited for the next episode! The Long Walk is my favorite Stephen King book :D and I also never finished The Stand even though I liked it? And its my familys favorite King book, so I might have to reread that with you!
Oh I already know I am going to love this series! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on some of my favourite books of his! Great work Gavin!
I'm doing something similar, except I'm focusing on reading things that are in the multiverse, it's so cool to read his different lengths of writing.
Godspeed 🫡
My favorite booktuber and my favorite autor! This os going to be an amazing journey!
The Shining is one of my favorites. IT is still in my top ten books. I cannot wait for you to get to it, please watch the mini series! Tim Curry does Pennywise so much more book accurate, sarcastic and mocking.
Oh wow, what a project! Good luck with this odyssey 😂 I’m excited
I'm so excited for this series! I myself am making my way through all Stephen King's books and am enjoying every minute! 😊
Excited for this series! Seen so many of his movies but have only read Cell myself. Hopefully you have a good time with the books 😁
Thank you for the video and the upcoming schedule, I think it might be fun to read the ones I haven't yet and read along with you :)
The Shining - A Tier - Pretty high up there, not my absolute favorite, but I saw the movie first and the movie is one of my favorite things in existence.
Great project! ‘Salem’s Lot is my favorite King book!
His book, "On Writing" is very good.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts so thoroughly and intelligently. I’m kind of a new subscriber and you are fantastic!
I cannot wait for your next Stephen King video.
Genuinely cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Doctor Sleep based on this reading of the Shining. Because the alcoholism is supposed to be the scary part not the murders.amd the sequel doubles down on that. I do agree that its not *scary* so much as horrifically tragic
I HATE SCARY MOVIES AND ETC BUT LOVE HEARING PPL TALK ABOUT THEM AND I'M LIVING FOR THIS SERIES.
I love this series can’t wait for you to continue!! 🙌🏼
The audiobook of the Shining was amazing for suspense and tension. Doctor Sleep is excellent, and you get more of Danny.
OMG. I have never commented but I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and now you are reading my all time most favorite author Stephen King. I have been reading his book since I was 12 years old and love to see other people read them. Can’t wait to see all your reactions to his books.
Thanks so much for supporting
so excited for this series!!
Omg I am so excited for this series, Gavin!
💚🖤 Love this vlog! I liked Carrie. Joined patreon
I read Carrie as my first king as well way back in the 90s. It is such a heart breaking story
@@breerex4957 yeah, totally agree. 'The Green Mile' is amazing. I haven't seen the Shawshank Redemption but I heard a lot of good stuff about it 😌
I am so ready for this Gavin! I was in your reading livestream last week it was so fun. Please do more!
I absolutely will, I loved doing that live stream!
I'm SO EXCITED for this series, and so impatient for you to get to all the books. I'm like 75% of the way through his catalogue and it's taken me 15 years 😂😭
Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.
Great Vlog series and wonderful commentary. Salem's Lot was my favorite as well, followed by The Shining and then Carrie. Have not read Rage.
I'd seek vengeance too
It's a very interesting topic of conversation in regards to vengeance and the lengths people go to to exact it
This is awesome! I will definitely follow these videos!
