That looks like it would also make a nice tackle box, 3D print some lure trays for the drawers of different sizes rectangles and a couple squares, same for the top section only with a couple larger sections and slots for other things

Just did a few of these myself and they turned out great, it was very satisfying. Just a tip for removing the drawers + slides without having to push the tabs in and potentially loosen/damage the slides. I started doing the same thing but now realize it was longer and harder - To remove any of these style drawers just take a hacksaw blade, heat it up about an inch from the end and create a bend at about a 45° angle - Open the drawer you wish to remove all the way, and push it back in about a half inch so you have enough room to slide the hacksaw between the hitting drawer tab + slide tab - push your new drawer slide tool in with the bend facing the wall (away from the drawer) until you see it pass the tab for the hole - pull the slide - it'll force the tab right up and over the blade freeing the slide (keep the slide in the drawer a little bit for support) - repeat other side - do the same thing but in between the slides and box itself to remove the slides To make the tool takes about 25 seconds, and once you have it made you can remove a drawer or slide in 2-3 seconds and leave the tabs factory positioning not bending them over and over Repeat to
Oh and I use a paintbrush and apply Johnsons paste wax to the slides for lubrication - it helps a lot. Be careful of what lube you use, avoid using grease especially as it will gunk up with all the dirt and grime quickly

My Daddy just passed down his Sears Craftsman Tool Box he used when he was Maintenance at Frito Lay,yes on the tag it says Sears Craftsman!! It has wear+tear on it on the outside+inside the draws. Also has a pull up lid on the bottom. He said I should repaint it but I'm not. Those scratches are from my Daddy's hard work+it's a badge of honor!! Wouldn't trade it for a Million Dollars!!!❤
What kind of rivets did you use to place back the handles and latch locks? Looking forward to restore some old tool boxes but don't like the look of pop rivets.
Just got the 3 drawer model of this from my Mother in law, Im not going for a full restoration since I dont own alot of the gear to do so, but thanks for posting because now there are a few things I can do to make sure it gets a bit of restoration.
Nice. I applaud the fact you used real rivets instead of the those stinkin' pop rivets. However you should have used round head hollow rivets and the tool to do the job. It would have been easier than pounding those brass rivets. But overall a nice job.

Good job on the old toolbox. I would like to encourage you to look into an actual pneumatic spray gun. A decent one won't cost too much and with a little practice you would be very pleased with the finish. Your choices of colors and textures would be endless. You could also investigate powder coating. That can be done at home with an oven for things that would fit inside one. Either one will give you more of a factory finish that you might like better than a spray can. Just a thought. Also I liked the fact that you didn't add some obnoxious music to your video. So many people do it and it ruins the whole thing in my opinion. Great job!
Thanks! Yes I plan on restoring the vise, but I'll probably do a few quicker restorations of some hand tools first since the vise may take me a month or two with my schedule.

I dont think young folks understand, before this boxstore interweb era, there were only a few ways to aquire decent tools. Sears, auto parts, hardware store or off a tooltruck.
Two questions: Why did you wait to do dent removal until after you’d painted the whole thing? You removed the drawer locking mechanism at the back of the box, cleaned it up and then reinstalled it but didn’t attach the lifting mechanism to the top lid; why? The way that was done didn’t provide a way to secure those bottom two drawers.
That wasn't dent removal. I was hammering the new brass rivets to hold on the hardware. Also, I did attach the mechanism to the lid, but must not have included footage of it. Apologies for that.
I have the exact same tool box. I got it using facebook marketplace for $15 but it was full of old tools. Restored the tools but the toolbox itself seems it will take awhile. How long did it take you to restore the box? roughly two days or more?
mine didn't turn out like this. i have an old abused waterloo 2 drawer. it had a seized hinge, tore metal where the hinge was seized up and not a straight line on it. had to free up the hinge with oil, determination and a hammer. weld up the tears by the hinge, not easy on that thin stuff. then beat it out straight with a piece of 2x2 and a hammer. didn't prep it like that but painted it up. truned out ok considering where it started. last one i brought back had the bottom rotted out and a frozen hinge and a bent lid. turned out ugly but i only wanted something to throw chains in. i got a piece on tin from an old stereo and welded it in lol. then went around on the what was left on the sides and riveted it down to keep the from bend up, was too thin to weld. it'll not hold moisture anymore, that's for sure lol. it might help ya, nothing wrong with what ya done but a drill will make quick work of those rivets if you can get it in there. the slides, i would have brushed off and greased. it made a big difference on mine. i do like how you peened the hardware on. i've always just used pop rivets. if i ever get a hold of one i care about, i'll prolly do that.
Yeah, it's a little embarrassing how chipped they are, but between working at the shipyards and restoring tools in my shop, it's difficult to keep a nice looking manicure. I'll try to have better looking nails in future videos.
good job, but the time you put in prep and prime , you should have put that much into the paint, maybe a light sanding and and one more coat would have had better result, but who am I? probably the guy that sold it and mistreated it.

I have a 3 drawer just like this. Each drawer is loose on it's track and trying to decide if I need to source new drawer slides if they even exist.
That was fun to watch but once you started spraying blue I was like, why are you turning this into a $50 Kobalt box? Oh well, still enjoyed it.

I don’t understand why the grinding wheel when drilling the handle rivets would have been quicker and not potentially damaging the box and lid.

WD40 makes a rust soak that works really well. It's very similar to Evaporust.

you dont want to use just filler primer for bare metal. use a thin coat of etch primer first

Ive always used white vinegar for rust. And it works really good. But not near as good as that stuff did. Damn that came out clean.

If I could've streamlined my efforts, I probably could have done it over a weekend. Instead, it took me an hour or two a day for like 2 weeks.
