I can't recall any situation off hand where the lighting was so bad the camera wouldn't take a photo due to not locking focus, but use what works for your of course! 👍
Tests: ruclips.net/video/gNQLjdvVf7E/видео.html This video is the best I could do in the moment. I focused on video rather than photos. I found v1.20 for photos pretty sufficient so this new v1.40 firmware should hopefully be a step up there. It's too bad Nikon didn't add face/eye detect to wide area focus mode because it would have made the face detect feature more useful overall on the camera. Maybe in the coming months when I go to conventions I'll have a chance to photograph people and I can use the Z5. Though It will be anecdotal at that point.
Scott, great explanation. Great videos. Question: I can not record in automatic focus subject traking mode WITHOUT pressing the shutter halfway. How can I do that 'cause I need my two hands to move the gimbal. Thx
You want to track something specific? You have to interact with the camera by tapping on the screen or buttons (there is a touch screen toggle on the left of the screen to set what it does). Face/eye detect are automatic but the camera picks which person and would require interacting with the camera to switch who. If it feels slow you can increase movie AF tracking sensitivity and AF speed. Make sure movie mode is in AF-F which is all time autofocus. Also, eye detect in movie mode requires the latest firmware.
@user-ce4yy1pv1u Not much you can do besides ask that company to develop support. Nikon does have the MC-N10 wireless grip/controller that is designed for video work, but it is expensive. Support for this was added to the Z5 in firmware 1.40. www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/remote-cords/mc-n10-remote-grip.html Z5 firmware: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/504.html Looks like they added support for the ML-L7 wireless remote as well as the grip. This is probably the cheaper but still pretty functional option. www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/remote-transmitters/ml-l7-bluetooth-remote-control.html You might be able to use a different wireless shutter release to at least get start/stop recording and maybe half-press or press a Fn button or two. For some reason this page doesn't list the two mentioned above. www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/photography-accessories/mirrorless-camera-accessories.page#!/tag:7WA:Remotes%20and%20Releases/product:1649:Z%205
Great video! Does anyone know what my problem is: when using live view instead of viewfinder my autofocus settings are completely different f.e. i all of the sudden have no af-c anymore and my af modes are all gone (single point, dynamic, 3d, and auto) and are replaced by face priority, wide area, normal area, subject tracking... anyways great vid keep it up:)

Mee 🤣
With focus priority, you can miss moments because the camera refuses to take the photo. I'd rather get a moment a bit soft than completely miss it.

New AF update came out, can you do a comparison?
Yeah, I saw that on the DPReview forums. I haven't updated my camera yet so maybe.

@@ScottJWaldron Thanks it was AF-F not set up ;) Now I'm dealing with an incompatibility with A FeyTech AK4000 and my Z5... :(

Please can you show the manual Fokus help Funktion when using manual focus lenses ?
I have a video about the settings I use with manual focus lenses here: ruclips.net/video/-nA00aBuZ3Q/видео.html

You can reset the camera completely through an option in the setting menu: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z5/en/09_menu_guide_06_34.html
Performances/ eye af. Alpha 7 mk3 ?
A7 mkIII is more expensive, different class of cameras. Of course it will be better
