Fuel pump leak fix - quick and cheap

  • My Volvo V70 started smelling like a gas station. Apparently this is a known issue with few cars. Part of the fuel pump assembly (probably made of Acetal kind of plastic) developed a crack over time and started leaking whenever the pump is working. I went to a professional who asked for about US $800 !!! the pump alone is few hundreds. So I decided to look at it myself as you can see. Finally I pored Epoxy adhesive (used Ceys brand :) and some Devcon brand not shown in the video). The Epoxy does not chemically bond to the plastic but its mechanical grip is good enough to hold tight in place and effectively stop the leak. I guess I saved few hundred bucks with this one. Hope it will last at least as the pump motor lasts. The movie is a little jerky because I held my Samsung Galaxy S3 in one hand while working with the other. The Galaxy S3 has really good video quality up to 1920x1080 !!!
    Update :
    Exactly 1 year after this fix, I started smelling again the fuel in my car and I knew exactly where it was coming from. Through the year I purchased on ebay a fuel pump just to discover it's the wrong part number at the moment I needed it (although the part is almost exactly the same). I went to the Volvo dealership and bought a new pump and also let them replace the pump since I could not get the fuel tank release wrench on time for the MOT test. Apparently , during the year , the fuel was eating it's way through the epoxy layers until it broke out of the epoxy. I could peel away the soften epoxy and redo the work if I had more time to play with it.

    Outstanding quick fix. this is a very known issue and actually has a TSB and recall on it for only some models. This fix is a great way to spend some money. There are special epoxies for exhaust and gas too that will make it last way longer

    Thanks for the video. Used JB weld and it's been leak-free for 3 weeks now. $5 and an hour of my life (plus a day to let it harden).
    Volvo wanted $180 just to confirm the car had a leak.

    Thanks for the Video. Also, big thanks to Reynaldo G who posted a long comment below about contacting Volvo corporate to get them to fix this. I own a XC70 that leaks fuel. I am not in one of the recall states. Not sure exactly where the fuel was coming from, I looked at this video and disassembled the car enough to access the top of the fuel pump. The car was leaking right on top of the fuel pump (out the top of the fuel pump to be specific) as shown in this video. I contacted Volvo Corporate, they opened a ticket, I took my car into the local dealership, and Volvo ended up replacing the fuel pump at no charge as part of their 'Goodwill' program. THANK YOU VOLVO for taking care of this. I have owned five Volvo's (940, 960, V70, XC70, and another XC70) and this is part of the reason why I love these cars, and feel strongly that Volvo really does care about the people driving their cars. My local dealership was great, and Volvo Corporate treated me well. I am one happy Volvo owner.

    Thanks for the video. I did this repair today. It took about 1 hour to remove the seats from my 2004 XC70. The pump was leaking in the same location. I soaked up the gasoline with a towel and then cleaned the area with brake cleaner. After while waiting for the brake cleaner to dry, I noticed gasoline again in the top of the fuel pump. Then I realized that the hoses need to be disconnected because the fuel system maintains pressure after the pump is shut off. I disconnected the fuel hoses and cleaned the area again. I used "JB Weld for Plastic". Poured it on top of the pump after mixing the 2 parts. It has hardened but I will wait 24 hours before testing.

    Just an FYI to everyone. I took my 2002 XC 70 w/ fuel pump leak to dealer. They told me there was NOT an official recall on the fuel pump BUT that as a volvo dealer they could submit my VIN number to volvo for a courtesy replacement as it is a KNOWN defective part and volvo would provide the part and pay them for standard labor (800) to replace it for me for free. The mechanic at my shop said he had submitted 40 or so of these request over the past two years and that Volvo had approved every single one usually within 2 hours so that they were able to replace it in the same day. Call a dealership first. I had bought my volvo used just a few years ago and that didn't seem to matter to them. They just needed the VIN and to confirm that it was the right year and model to fall under this replacement program.

    Hi, great info, I found it because I had same fumes smells un my xc90 after fuel up the tank. This is a 2007 xc90, AWD, 2.5T.
    un my case the pump didn't leak while the engine was running, I did after switching off the engine, I don't know how long after, at least 1 hour after switching off I went to check and there was some gasolinera in the lower part of the pump top, I cleaned and wipe again and put the engine tu run, again not one single drop of gasoline, I drove around and no drops. Stop the car and let it rest for one hour. Checked again and there was some gasoline dripped. Around one soup spoon. This time I checked carefully and found gasoline inside the vertical José connection, the one that looks air vent, since it didnt had any José attached. So I cleaned again, I put a have foot long José on that vent connection, since I had silicone for gas and diesel tanks I used it on top of the pump, where it is use to crack and leak, and also around the área where I found gasoline, just in case. I also put silicone around the gasket that covers the gas tank, to avoid a little bit the fumes in case it leaks again. let it rest for a day. That was just yesterday, so Ill check today. Also, it leaks only with full tank.

    I don`t understand the reason to unplug and disconnect eveything. I would clean everything with break clean. It dries faster and you have a perfect result. And you don`t have the risk to damage smth. 🤷‍♂ Kind regards from Germany; sorry for my awful English!

    • @dfrench1016
      @dfrench1016 8 лет назад

      I used water weld and it did NOT work. Not saying it was the JB Weld's fault. My whole connection seemed to have hairline cracks so I did a pretty thick layer of it all around it. It was very tough to reach but I felt like I had good coverage. Started it up and pinhole style leaks came through. Wouldn't have even seen them except they hit other stuff. Leaks were about as thick as a human hair and they would have gone several feet if there was room so I think it was just too thin a layer for the pressure. Debating trying a second layer but I'm worried I won't be able to get the fuel line back on.

      I used JB weld and it's he'll up for almost a year so far. I haven't really driven it all that much but so far so good.
