I enjoy making these types of videos because I can pack so much info into one video. Hopefully you found something helpful in this one.
This is so valuable information if one wants to go from taking snapshots to taking photographs. Thanks so much Jared for providing all of this to us.
Wicked helpful, thank you!
Why the hell would you go faster? 1/1000 of a second for a couple goons on the beach GMAB
I love this type of video. It helps me a lot
I had a nice experience about a year ago with jared's hour long session. The session was great and Jared kept his critique constructive. Save and rewatch the video that he sends you of your session. If you get back from the studio or field, and begin to edit only to find the same issues before, it helps to have the criteque in your back pocket.
Surely did learn from this... always great to listen to honest feedback even if its not directly for me.. only thing that counts.. it's that objective.. and with the honest intention to share knowledge and not bash someone.. Thanks Jared!
My high school B&W class I took (late 90’s) the teacher for it always reminded us that a photographer is never afraid to get a little dirty, climb over an object, or get creative on just where to snap the shot. Ultimately to get that fantastic shot. Of course keep it legal and don’t trespass, heck just ask if you need. Yep, even if it means laying on your stomach in the middle of the street, I’ve done that, to get that great shot. 👍
Access is a photographer's best friend.
"what the hell is this?!!" caught me off-guard!! 😂😂😂
I love these critiques! Great content Jared! hopefully soon I can schedule one.
Well worth the money. Had you critique my hockey photos. I took what you said to heart and have seen improvements. Got the chance to get some intro shots and behind the scenes as well to help tell more of the story. The team even asked me to be their photographer for next year!
Very honest and helpful feedback. You are terrific at giving critique without being insulting. Not an easy balance.
1st real video I've seen on this channel. Real photography critiquing. A first on RUclips. Thank you!
Lots of great info that will help me improve my game!
If money is an issue, the Sigma 150-600 C adapted to my RP and, now, R6 works very well and is a sharp lens. I'd personally rather have that and a 70-200 2.8 than the 100-500.
I wouldn’t necessarily call the Sigma 150-600 C sharp. It’s actually quite soft especially at 600. But for the price, it’s an excellent bit of glass. However, I think it’s well worth going for the 100-500. Investing in good glass is so so important if you’re into wildlife, or sports especially. But again, if you’re on a budget, and just can’t possibility justify that expense, the 150-600 is a wonderful option.
@@oHeihei before I pulled the trigger, I scoped out a number of videos on that issue. That seems to be a QC issue as not all of the Sigmas got soft in the corners. Whatever the case, the shots I have been getting with this lens are superb and the quality punches way above the price of the lens. The extra reach and similar, if not brighter, maximum aperture are plusses over the Canon L lens. I'm definitely NOT saying it's better, but it's still very good. Good enough I'd prefer it if it meant I could also add the 70-200 2.8 L for not much more...
Jared, I'm in a little of a slump, and your sharing this analysis session was really engaging and genuinely helpful. Thanks for showing it to us!
Wow! So many can learn so much from these videos. My reaction from some of these photos in this video was "why did he send in thaaat"? But this is why photography is soo cool. It doesn't come cheap and you never stop learning. My advice: Do research, make plans, learn from the best and copy with pride!
I always enjoy these. It takes courage to take criticism! Kudos to this photographer. We all learn.
Awesome combination of technical, composition and storytelling advice!
I used to watch your videos...
but I still do. 😮💨
A lot of these pics were taken at Santa Cruz, CA. I think it's kinda fun when you see something like this or a movie, and you know exactly where they were taken.
Great video. I learned a lot. I will sign up when I have some variety to my pictures.
The Three Waves shot was his best shot. That actually blew me away!
I think you were amazingly generous in your critique. What jumped out at me was the consistently centered composition. Changing that up will make a huge difference for him. Excellent advice. Might be hard for him to change that though. It would be nice to see some future pics of his to see how much of this he is able to integrate into his photography.
great helpful video n critique Jared very well done 👏 ✔️ 👍
As a casual photographer I learn so much from that kind of videos, thumbs up!
Thank you Jared. I picked up helpful tips for sure.
Wow, thanks for this video. It has helped me a lot.
17:50 "How are you so high up?" In Santa Cruz, by the penninsula that has the small lighthouse, there is a surfing lane, next to the peninsula. You can get up on the pen. and shoot down on the surfers.
Ah so that's what skittles is... Screenshot!!! hahaha! Just kidding...
Quick tip: Press Shift+F to hide the top grey bar (which takes up space and its brightness is annoying). Or even better maximize the window. It's alway nice to retrieve more real estate for the center picture - especially on smaller monitors. You can also reduce the height of the buttom picture selection bar.
Kick ASS
I mean, it is a zoom lens, plus it is a variable aperture lens on top of that. So yeah, naturally not going to be very sharp or allow the camera body to capture nice colors... That's actually the main reason why I stopped using zoomies long time ago. But then again, I only do portraiture and motorsports so that might just be on me.
Not true at all my friend. There are definitely some weak telephoto lenses out there, but a good amount of them are very very sharp. I actually prefer my sigma 150-600 to my Canon 70-200 in situations where I can reasonably carry it, if it produces an unsharp image, it's my fault, missed focus ect. It's very rare it produces an image that isn't tack sharp where I focused. As for colors, that's more about the lighting and post processing, not so much the lens, I get get deep and accurate colors even with a kit 15-85. Naturally primes will be a tad sharper, but with how sharp modern telephoto lenses are, it's hard for me to justify packing five different prime lenses instead of two telephoto.
I watched my critique yesterday and it was great. recommended
Love all the videos you make but these educational videos are really great and helpful. Thank you for making them.
Awesome video! I love these rapid critiques, so insightful... keep at it!
brilliant! we learn so much from these critiques! awesome 👍
I'm never here this early... 🍿
when I started this video you had me checking my tabs. I was afraid.
great content as always, thank you
Great video, lots of helpful information. Really enjoyed watching and lots of things I can work on myself. Thanks to the photographer for letting you share with us.
I recently updated to a 50mm 1.8 canon lens, and I am loving it.
Damnit Jared... The shot with the sailboat, I thought it was a bit of something on my monitor, not a bird flying over the ocean... 😆 (tried to scrape it off till you did your resizing)
I’m not afraid, but OK. 😂
Can you ask Tammy from Tamron when the 35-150 2-2.8 is gonna be back in stock?
I really enjoyed this video. I learned a lot!
Thank you! This was extremely helpful!!!!
Pretty much all I shoot is surfing. Nailing focus on the surfer instead of the wave which leaves the surfer soft is a special skill. Shooting F8 or F10 will help with getting more in focus and increase your keeper percentage. Regarding shooting down low as opposed to being up high, the problem with being down low is that the waves in front obscure the surfer and the spreay from prior waves will mess with AF. While it would be nice to shoot from a low perspective its not always practical when shooting surfing from shore. You want down low spend $2k on a water housing. If you want to get great surfing shots without breaking the bank its still hard to beat the 7DmII paired up with the Canon 100-400Lis.
I shoot surfing as well and it is by far the hardest to master in sports, especially if you are not a surfer yourself. The water housing approach is my favorite and enables a connection to the image few ever get to see. It is harder from the water to nail focus every time and have a "Fro knows photo" no crop composition. Your keeper rate drops significantly and hero shoots are even more rare. But when it all comes together, from the water is where it is at! Clearly he doesn't shoot surfing often. Post editing for composition is a must in this genre. I do agree with him regarding placement of surfer, telling a story and shoot wider from different angles to get more interesting images. I'm open to others viewing my work. Hey. Newbies might be confused by some of the instructions in this video. You say fill the frame in one shot, but later say don't go tight. It might be helpful for you to elaborate the difference. Still a great eval.
Jeez this video was sooooo informative. Thank you. I've wondered about the position of some of my portraits and wondered why it felt weird. I need more practice with composition.
Fantastic job, Jared! Of all the great things you do, these are my favorite, as I’ve mentioned before. I have an EOS R and an R5 and for the action shots, the R3, I think, would’ve been the go to camera along with the 100-500L. The EOS R did great for some of these, but not for the action shots as you said
Great video
Very interesting
Hey Jared, can you do an updated “how I film my youtube vids” episode? Use your iPhone and give us an real life first person perspective on your setup. And any helpful hints you have on how you maintain quality and get viewers.
Awesome critique👍🏻 i’m planning to upgrade as well, but I’m moving to Sony A7 IV. Same quality as Canon R6 but higher resolution. Great 3rd party options without needing an adapter.
One thing about this video though, you mentioned specs for the Canon RP. Did you mistake the R for the RP?
Great critique jared! I really enjoy these and try to learn from them. I recently upgraded from a nikon dslr crop sensor camera, to a Sony a7iv and a 20mm 1.8 and the gm 35 1.4. I really enjoy the environmental portraits, although I'm not sure how good I am with composition and telling a story yet 😅 One of these days I'll pay for a rapid fire critic to get some constructive criticism.
Awesome sauce! I would love to sign up for a mentorship. One day fro man.
Question, your point on the eyes being higher than the middle of the face makes sense and I like how you move the eyes above the center of the frame. However eyes are in the middle of the head, so what's your composition advice for a subject who is not folically well endowed as you?
Hey Fro. How can one submit an image for critique? Thanks!
Not much shadow under the nose so surely early morning - 8am while sun is low - catchlight in the eye is just above horizontal. How did you get 1:48pm ? Sun would be high in the sky and nose would have long shadow.
Very good and honest. I would be afraid of sending you my photos. Overall, it was good critique.
I have to say, I almost didn’t clicked on the video, because of the title. Luckily I did, cause I really like these critique videos. You don’t have to be so mysterious clickbaity :D
Do one with a Sony a7iv liked to see results
Can someone please submit 10 images for critique using a medium format camera? They’ll all be 4x5 and I want to know if that’s ok.
I don't think there are many beginner photographers that are shooting medium format. From what I've seen, most people shooting medium format have been in the art form for hey bit.
ahahah the dic perspective angle was funny
Working dick pic photo strategies into a critique = priceless. Haha. Nice tips, and I enjoyed watching this. I know a lot of the clowns on the internet forums will knock you for being "just a youtuber", but you're legit. Thanks for sharing.
Is there a way that we can get more of these videos, vs just one photography critique per year? How about 2 or more per year? Baby steps... Just saying...
I actually just booked a huge event with this German heiress Anna Delvey. She hasn't paid yet, but she's so rich she's good for it right? Oh Jared you will never read this...
Pic at 19:05 is great
Great video imo that guy needs a 90D with 100-400 usm ii forget mirroless unless you are spending a fortune
Was freaky to see where I live in a video on here lol
2nd
Dick Pick .... really, is that the proper language to use for a critique. That's okay Jared you can tell me where to go 😝👍 people tell me all the time. BTW great critique 🤟😎 (EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS ll USM with an adapter, this is a sharp lens)
Seems like he was shooting auto
You've been lifting weights for years now why are you still so small?
Not first
Makes me glad I switched to Olympus
First.
ok
I see.
Sony is better than Nikon....period
I used to watch but you had to bring politics into it and I no longer watch you.
Says the guy watching my latest video.
@@froknowsphoto but I didn’t watch it and will never again
