Best video on building layout principles I have seen. I am currently in training as a carpenter in NZ and found our approach so slow, clumsy, and at risk of inaccuracy. But gosh, your approach is so simple, quick and accurate. Thank you.
Someone took me into a field and taught me this when I was 16.ive never set out a new house yet.but I remember and know how to do it.you have a hell of a lot of land there.in the u.k.we call batter boards profiles we put nails in for the wall lines and set them out a lot wider so we can dig the foundations pour the concrete and put the lines back on.then plum the walls down into the concrete from the string lines.simple to set out if you know how. but I met loads who can't do it.im 68 i always worked on and built to someone else's setting out I've seen loads set out out of square.we used to measure from corner to corner check it measured the same.nice simple video thanks.i been building brick houses amongst other things all.my life.you always find the out of square mistakes when you've built the outside. and start setting out the internal walls.
I love you brother man. THIS is the one thing I could never understand, until watching this video. This is what kept me from the ability to build. I know it sounds stupid, I have had lots of people try to explain it to me. Your video made my light bulb come on!
This the best video I've seen on RUclips thus far for squaring out a project. The double tape method is amazing. It was very helpful to me and I just used it. I thank you for that.
John, this is an amazingly clear explanation. Thank you very much - what a simple, elegant way to lay out corners. Love your no-math way of setting the line, and then extending it. Great job.
Thank U so very much It helped refresh my memory of something I haven't used since my childhood A J U R an inspiration, very wonderful that u have that keen interest And a wonderful Dad that is so loving to teach u Truely and inspiration for all who want to learn
Great explanation I have been using this system for a very very long time me my father and my grandfather the only difference being we would set the profiles level using a water level - the string line tends to sag over a long distance If people take one thing from this video please remember 3-4-5 you can use it for so many applications Really great video
Excellent video. Very good explanation on laying out the corners of a building using simple tools. I am starting a shed project and this is the best information I have come across on doing the initial layout. I will be using your method.
I love the way how he squared everything off and also simplified the whole process. Every RUclipsr is blah, blah, blah, blah blah blah blah blah great job
Thanks for sharing. I learned something. Also, how refreshing it is to see that AJ is learning to use his hands for something other than fiddling with an electronic device.
Thanks for this video. I'm not a builder what so ever so it's a little hard to soak all this info up. I'm doing research because I want to build a deck. I may just have to re watch a couple times!
At 20:04 you say that the string needs just to touch the post... I get that... But whats with the string an the 1st post? Theres no way that you can check this alone.... 2 persons are needed to be shure that the string is bearly touching the two posts..... Correct?
He skipped over that a little bit but it can still be done with 1 person. It usually takes 2-3 times back and forth to get the string just barely “kissing” the posts but it can be done alone.
That was awesome. Hard on the ears but awesome. Thanks!!! Nowadays you'd probably have a mic, w/ a foam fury thingie on it taped to your shirt. Cool kid! How did you get the location of the first stake (corner)? Are squared up to a road or nearby building?
Thanks for the video... makes it nice when people go into actual detail on how to do something like you did. Me and my wife are building a 20' x 40' x 14' tall barn that is an actual pole barn and not a square post barn where by we're using telephone poles and so it's going to be a bit inconvenient concerning getting everything squared up since the telephone poles are round and they taper as they go up. So now that it's April 2017, how far have you gotten on your project? Are you going to upload anymore videos?
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost my account password. I love any tips you can give me
@Nicholas Arthur Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great video. Does the distance of batter boards matter? I am building a 12x16 cabin. Would 6" or a ft be enough distance? Does 3 4 5 convert to inches?
A foot would probably work better for the batter boards. The 3,4,5 rule can be applied to inches or feet as long as you use the same measurement unit throughout the whole equation.
When measuring from the county road, I didn't see a check to make sure you were perpendicular off of the road. But your project probably came out just fine and eyeballing the perpendicular is good enough. It would just throw off your building wall being parallel to the road a bit if not measuring perpendicular to the road for those two measurements off the road.
"I always try have my son help whenever possible" yes, they are little sponges, absorbing skills to apply to all things in their future.. amazing little guys! My two year old grandson was amazed at how he could lift a heavy load outside with a simple lever.. helping granddad.
hey buddy very good video. best explanation ive seen soo far. just one question even as an explanation video, i understand, but when those first metal studs or pole markers went in if they are not driven in plumb from the dimension on ground when you do your offset or batterboard wouldnt it trow off your square.?
Vinny Layne That's why I measured from the bottom of the metal posts and cross measured the layout to correct any small issues. Those metal post are nice because the end of the tape measure fit on the post but they are by no means perfectly straight. Thanks for the question.
100" set back? Good god man, what communistic county do you live in? I bet they enjoy your full price property taxes on the land they wont let you use.
??? 80 ft and 100ft meet and that means it's 90°angle? You can have 80 ft and 100ft at different angles too that doesn't mean it's 90 angle. Or I'm not getting what you're explaining.
3, 4, and 5ft make a right triangle so does any triangle that is divisible by 3, 4, and 5ft. A 100ft is 5 times 20, 80ft is 4 times 20, and 60ft is 3 times 20. So the 3,4,5 triangle and the 60,80,100 have the same angles.
Swear I have watched every single youtube video on this and this is the only one that explains it in a concise and straight-foward manner.
I'm living in Jamaica and I was watching your video and it wad well explained, your son reminded of mine. He helped me in all I do at home, smiles.
good job on explaining this it was a great help on building my barn! finally just plain English on how to.
This is the best explanation I have ever seen on how to do this. Thank you so much for sharing. This helps me more than you will know.
I've always wondered how buildings were squared off, and you did a great job at explaining it. Thanks alot John.
i agreed with the positive conments of others .....one of the best videos on building layouts
Good instruction and demonstration, plus a great helper and great camera person. Thanks.
This has been the most people friendly and simple example of a foundation layout that I have seen. Thanks I will be saving this video.
JUST WHAT I NEEDED. THANKS

Very nice! I knew it was going to be good when you laid out all the tools needed to complete the task. Well explained. Good job to both of you.

Great explanation for a simpleton like me. You did a great job on how to and just as important why you would use the 3-4-5 rule.
Thank you for the great viewpoint of the way you layout your buildings. Very helpful!👍

It's the cows mooing for me...
Oh very good, really helpful and I loved AJ and the cow chorus!
Great video and AJ was a trooper. Thanks
Thanks for sharing. I learned something. Also, how refreshing it is to see that AJ is learning to use his hands for something other than fiddling with an electronic device.

Good Job John, it is long but it is a complete and total explanation, I will use this for my pole barn and am excited to get started. Thanks
thank you sir for that great how to video....you are a very good teacher and I will be using it
Great video!
The kid is learning quite a bit, so am I. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Very good description
The youngster is a great, seems disciplined. Lucky to have a Dad that includes him in the project.

Fantastic video. Just a note, at 6:19 you point at the 15' but say 5'.
Great video John. Thanks so much. You have a new subscriber from NC!

Very detailed explanation. I found this very useful. Thanks for posting.
Real nice, thanks for sharing.
Thanks John. Good helper too! That pretty much answers my questions. Very instructional.

If the ground wasn't more or less flat would it be as easy I wonder
Saya suka video ini, 👍
Great instructional video
Hi John, great video. Two thumbs up!
Are you going to show us the build ?
First thing I’m gonna do is get two of those giant measuring tapes
Tq from malaysia
I always try have my son help whenever possible. Nice video

Don’t you mean 9’, 12’ (15’) ? Because you said 9’ 12’ (5’).
excellent! well done, Can I hire A.J. to help me? good job guys and thanks.
Thank you very much,very informative
Fantastic ! Best one I have found.
100" set back? Good god man, what communistic county do you live in? I bet they enjoy your full price property taxes on the land they wont let you use.
he's a lefty, watch out.... lol
Good but you should have taken the whole area so that we can see the whole operation or measurement clearly so that we see the full Demo..
Excellent demonstration brother
Or just lay out your "box" and check your diagonals
That would just give you a rhombus most likely. You need to confirm the 90 for the diagonals to tell you anything.
