  • Hey guys! Today I showcase my proto 2000 New York Central 0-8-0, which I customized to look like an ex B&A U3b class. I think it turned out pretty well. Enjoy!

Nice job! I have to convert several of these to IC engines. That involves moving the headlight from the top front of the smokebox door to the top of the smokebox and changing the sand domes. Any tips on removing the shell from the chassis?

Thanks! Removing the shell isnt super difficult, although proto2000 steam tends to be some of the most difficult to take apart locos on the market. Turn the loco upside down. Remove the screw which holds the wire plug. Push the wire plug aside, and remove the screw benath that. Towards the front of the engine, remove the three screws seen below the cylinders. Pop off the firebox ash pans, they can easily be removed with a gentle tug. Finally, pop off the injectors (under the cab on each side). They should be press fit and come out easily.
Now the hard part. from the cab end, pull on the shell. It should start to come off. Watch out for the piping coming out, like the sand lines going to the rear wheel. Once youve fully lifted off the shell from the cab side, slide the shell forward to unhook it from the front. Its a pain but it should eventually come off. Good luck!
