Good work, Danny! When I see a street scene where side characters doing their things, not just standing still like mannequins, I feel the effort that was put into animation. Also, the style is so adorable!
I also love that on the wall at the stairs you can see the guinnea pig portraits that they have made being included. There are a lot of lovely little details added that makes it feel alive.
I so agree. I was drawn into (pun intended belatedly) the video because the artwork was so fresh and unique! I found my eye wandering around each scene and enjoying the art and the narration as a whole. What a treat!
A kindergarten teacher told the story of one child wearing white clothes with an unusual regularity. Which, of course, always got dirty. So they eventually asked the parents if they didn't want to dress their child in clothes that are less of a hassle took keep clean. To which the mom replied "No no, it's intentional, I can boil & bleach these clothes to death!" 😂 (The story didn't include info about the exact material, so I'm not sure how the textiles really fared with continiously being washed on hotter cycles/with detergent containing bleach. But I appreciated the outlook of "Whatever we put in our child is gonna get dirty anyway, might as well get clothes that aren't delicate to handle..." )
@@craftlete I agree with that. White "looks" dirtier, but when you realize you can't remove a stain from a red shirt without removing some red with it, might as well go all white
Given that this was animated by Bernadette's sibling, Danny, who MADE the piggy portraits, I'm kinda unsurprised they made an appearance lol.. Danny does have their own channel - Danny Banner - if you want to see more of their work! They're super cool too.
I love this little animation style for shorter form videos. It feels like I'm being told a tale from a storybook and the accompanying music is really lovely.
Some sources say this was settled by the 30s and some say not until the late 40s or early 50s. Disney's Peter Pan came out in 1953 and had Wendy in a blue gown and Michael in a pink sleeper. So I tend to think it wasn't fully settled until later.
I'd be so happy if the current blue/pink dichotomy didn't last more than 100 years. Outside of the issue of needlessly gendering everything, it's just plain BORING.
I bought this cute light teal onesie when my son was only 5 months (it was Easter themed). He was so cute that an older lady at church asked what her name was ...I had to say "oh HIS name is...." It didn't help that he has beautiful long eyelashes too. 😅. Teal is a neutral color so I was so confused and it doesn't help how the girls section gets all the colors and the boys are just meh.
I remember having my babies (26 years ago) and not wanting to share their names or their chromosomes specifically because I HATED pink. Just pink. And the grandparents were all: "BUT HOW WILL WE KNOW WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES TO BUY!?" "Natural fibres, please. Not transparent. Green and yellow are nice colours. Oh, and no Disney or sportsing sportsies." I also bought a round crib because I have always been a li'l sh*t who never made anything easy for anyone. None of that stopped me from misgendering toddlers on Hallowe'en when their parents dressed them up in pink leopard onesies or lion manes. The binary is such a hard habit to break.
1:19 I really appreciate that Danny not only made beautiful pig portraits for Bernadette in real life but also added them into her animated time-traveling tower office.
Interesting - when I researched the topic for a totally different (scientific) reason some years ago, I found another aspect which might be more relevant to the German/European part of the world but is a fun story, too: Allegedly Emperor Wilhelm II (late 19th century) tried to boost the economy by supporting the growing of woad, which was the common plant for dying dark blue. He clothed the whole German marine this way (which was the blue marine uniform with the white square collar), which became in a "small" version fashionable to clothe young boys in. As not to put girls and boys in the same colour, girls were put in pink, a colour at that time (by richer people, obviously) more used for boys. It can also be seen in various old paintings of aristocratic boys, as it was the "small red", which was for a long time the most expensive colour, reserved for men and therefore used in Christian paintings for the coat of Jesus, while blue (as mentioned here) - was connected to Virgin Mary and thus in its "small" form often used for girls. But of course - FASHION. I've read other explanations as well, but I liked this story. (I think it was from: Heller, Eva "Wie Farben wirken", 1999) Edit: Oh, and - SO CUTE, the cartoon!
In the Netherlands we still have the tradition of putting up a sign, usually in the front yard if there is one, to announce the birth of a baby. It's a bit more elaborate nowadays though ^^
Some places in the US do that as well. It’s normally a signs that’s says “it’s a ____!” The signs kinda look like the political ones people stick in their yard lol I had a friend do that and it had the OPPOSITE effects as “stay away I’m tired” that was in the animation. Random people who she didn’t know (mostly older women) kept coming to her door to congratulate her and give her unsolicited advice.
and it still works as a deterrent because people only visit when invited for "kraamvisite" (I have no clue how to translate that to English even literally)
This was absolutely perfect! So entertaining, full of easter eggs, and yet easy to understand and educational as always. Give Danny an award, the animation was awesome and the style is very cute! If this could turn into a series of videos it'd be incredible
Oh gosh, this format was so fun! Very charming animation, and as much as I adore long videos filled with humor and knowledge it was very nice to be able to just watch this video as soon as I saw the thumbnail without accidentally forcing an overhaul of my schedule for the evening. Absolutely delightful! Very storybook and whimsical and, of course, very Bernadette!
My mom chose yellow and green for my siblings and me (2 girls, 1 boy). I was yellow. She's said she just thought yellow was a nice calming color for a baby
As the only knitting great aunt in the family, I am working on two blankets for impending births. One gender has been revealed, and the parents requested pink. The other is unknown to me, but the parents stated preference is "pastels". The famous knitting guru Elizabeth Zimmerman posited that silvery grays and deep navy were beautiful colors for baby wear (50 years ago!), and I agree. But guess we're not quite ready for that change in the mass population. 🙄👶
The funny thing is, even as gendered colours for children expand beyond pinks and blues, it seems to be nowadays that bolder colours tend to be for older boys, while pastels and softer colours tend to be for girls or infants, and gender rules seem to be more strictly enforced for boys, in that while it may be considered completely within norms for a little girl to wear light blue or pastel green clothing, it is far rarer for a lttle boy to wear pink or dark purple clothing, and girls tend to wear both skirts and trousers, but outside of certain cases of cultural dress, you almost never see boys wearing skirts or dresses.
One thing people often ignore, when they are on their woketard quests is, that girls often naturally go for warmer colors like red, pink, orange and purple tones and boys like blue, grey, green etc. Males and females are not the same and not everything comes down to "conditioning by society". People have also figured out that girls pay more attention to softer shapes in toys (flowers etc.) and things with a social aspect like faces on figures, while boys tend to pay more attention to harder and technical shapes (cars and so on). The thing about girls wearing trousers comes down to practicality I think but every little girl I know is delighted when shes allowed to wear a flowy dress. Its just easier for small kids to move around in trousers when they climb and play but why would boys wear dresses? Dresses are also not made for the male body shape later in life. It simply looks fricking ridiculous when a man wears a dress.
From a very surface level sociological reason, it makes sense and plays into general ideas about gender pervading Western culture; girls aspiring to masculinity is understandable as reaching for the power inherent in masculinity in a patriarchal system. Whereas men willingly acting feminine, giving up their perceived power, that's more noteworthy, more unusual, and is more routinely mocked/punished socially. There's always going to be more nuance of course, including people like me who aren't men or women, and I hope we can get to a place someday where clothes are a little less gendered so that people can try stuff they like! As a not-boy, I wish I had tried dresses or skirts earlier, wouldn't have had the dysphoria hoodie on nearly as much.
This type of animated video is so wonderful. The theme of a magical time travel fashion school in a tree with Dr Who references hit so many of my nerd buttons 😂. I loved the portraits of the guinea pigs too❤.
This animation is amazing, especially with it based around history. It reminds me of when I used to watch those shows on PBS like Liberty Kids back when I was a kid. Also appreciate the effort and research put into your videos as always.
I get the feeling this could be a whole series, and I wouldn't be surprised if y'all eventually decided to turn them into children's books given how informative the information is and how appealing the art and narration are.

...and on the same point, how has it become fashionable to wear black every day? Its not stereotyping or conditioning🙄Its proven that female babys are more drawn to warm colors and boys are more drawn to cool colors. Its a natural thing and woketards try to label everything as social conditioning and toxic and bad etc.
i bought mint and yellow for my first child, they would not tell me the gender on the scan, because my husband looked like he came from a culture that routinely aborted girls, in my hometown at that time. turned out to be a girl, which i suspected, dressed my son in the same mint and yellow 2yrs later, these days we all like blue and green, though my son does like pink, but not to wear

Whether wearing white or dyed clothes, one thing remains certain: kids are always gonna get their clothes dirty way too quickly

...I never noticed this! XD
That’s a good point! 😮
Notable that Peter Pan *was* set during the late 1800s, so it may be the case that Disney was going for a sort of historical vibe with it.
It might also be that Michael is wearing Wendy's old onesie
Also, in the 1953 animated movie, Captain Hook wears a pink shirt under his red coat.

Its not stereotyping or conditioning🙄Its proven that female babys are more drawn to warm colors and boys are more drawn to cool colors. Its a natural thing and woketards try to label everything as social conditioning and toxic and bad etc.
I loved the entire video, the no spoilers, the animation, all of it. I would happily watch more of these
i bought mint and yellow for my first child, they would not tell me the gender on the scan, because my husband looked like he came from a culture that routinely aborted girls, in my hometown at that time. turned out to be a girl, which i suspected, dressed my son in the same mint and yellow 2yrs later, these days we all like blue and green, though my son does like pink, but not to wear
love the animation, hope to see more in the future
Marvelous! A terrific history lesson, and the animation is wonderful.
Danny the animation is the best! I love animated Bernadette hairs of course and real-life Bernadette's sass. Thank you so much for this. More! More!
This is so utterly delightful!!! Oh my goodness how I love this! I would watch an entire series or read a whole collection of books about Madam Banner's Time Traveling Society!
Excellent script and narration as always, Bernadette, but YAY @DannyBanner ! The animated illustration was awesome!
