Have sales gotten you to buy things you really don't want or wouldn't have prioritized in your collection? Let's talk about how sales can hurt a nicely curated collection and ways to stay focused through the hype! Pop that tape in I got you let's go do this
I've bought a lot of Kino titles of unfamiliar films or less liked films because they have things so damn cheap in their sales. For $6-8 I'll gamble on things I otherwise wouldn't...I know my taste so they're usually at least ok...anything I hate I just sell off as I do believe in curation and am not one of these hoarding collectors who never sells anything off.
When i was young, i used every "3 for 2" or whatever sales were on to buy a lot of blu rays i ended up never watching. Now, i just buy the ones I truly love, and i rarely buy blind. And the collection is very curated and good by now. Less is more.
thanks man!!! I will always be honest... I dont get stuff for free from boutiques or studios, I have to buy my stuff and sometimes that means I have to stop and think about where I put my money!!! That is real life baby LOL ...there is also a trade off...I want to upgrade my TV and home theater but to do that, I will have to buy less movies for a while -that's just fact lol
@@AVAPopCulture so very true. It's always worth stepping back on the collecting to upgrade your setup. It makes the movie purchases just that much sweeter.
Thats funny, I just got an out of print Danish version of Cyborg. The Danish title is: Helten(The Hero). Which makes no sense because the Danish word for Cyborg is Cyborg.😉. Could only get it on DVD, but glad to have it in the collection. Been a fan of van Damme since watching bloodsport as a kid
The way I view blind buys…when I was a kid I would goto the local rental store and pick out a horror movie based on cover art alone for like 5$ So jumping in a sale and picking a couple 10$ movies based on the covers brings that feeling back. I do try and limit myself rebuilding my collection and while I could have spent 1000s on the sales this month I picked one label and budgeted myself 100$. I ended up choosing Severin simply for that opera release and really enjoyed picking out four 10$ titles based on the art
@Dis-at-large that is a good way to do it and I 100% look at blind buys the same way!! In the early 80s in mom'n'pop rental stores all we had to go on was cover art for movies nobody ever heard of lol
@toddhurley8270 I make standard custom slips for stuff that I can't get a slip for! You can see some of the ones I've done on Instagram @AmericanVintageAdventures
@mikefisher2673 for Criterion I still want: Blue Velvet, To Die For, Mulholland Dr, Some Like It Hot, and The Others...but they will still be there in 4 months at black Friday and beyond...
@@AVAPopCulture Exactly, just wait for sale and put our money into films we want, that's why I picked up Hitcher box set because you said they will always be there..
I got that Nightmare Sisters release right away. I love that they included the TV version. Like the Ice Cream Man release with the Monster Vision Summer School version with Joe Bob Briggs included. I love stuff like that. Nostalgia! Lol. I saw a lot of the movies I love for the first time on shows like USA Up All Night, so I love having those versions. Reform School Girls is one I've been wanting. I only have it on DVD. BTW, I could not have walked out of a store without those copies of Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and Lost Highway. I need to get those. I'm a big David Lynch fan.
@JerryRoark777 I agree on those up all night style movies! So much nostalgia! As far as the David Lynch movies, I want them, but they will pretty much always be available....there are a lot of limited quantity things out there I just have to focus my money on first!! But if Lynch is a favorite, that is a prime target for you!
Gone a little Arrow sale mad of late but they were all things that I have been looking at before, all at 50%. Mainly the Giallo essentials boxsets and Italian crime / years of lead boxset etc. Oh, also the Amazon Prime sale for the Avengers TV series ... eventually will watch them all. I don't think I bought anything that I didn't really want, charity stores are the worst places for me related to that. Not really into getting multiple copies of even my favourites. I would buy the ultimate 4K Logan's run boxset if that ever comes out (though I still keep thinking about that Barbarella boxset 4K ... if only it wasn't bluray region A). I often just go for a German or Spanish edition if it is a film that I want, if the UK version is crazily priced
@hvitekristesdod I have the Vinegar syndrome from beyond that I just got a few weeks ago and I am going to double dip with the 88 films release that is coming
I went after the Arrow Limited Of Reanimator back in 2021. Got in a bidding war for it on ebay and ended up snagging it for around $100. As you mentioned it goes for even more now. The issue with the standard is all the deleted and extended scenes are only viewable as extras, whereas the Limited has the longest and most complete Intergral cut as a seamless watch and I believe there's a 3rd (possibly the original R rated) cut so your getting every possible version of the film. To me that's a definitive set...even if the rumored new US company puts out a 4k I'll be fine sticking with that set.
I found the Arrow RoboCop 4k limited edition box set brand new for 50 dollars on Mercari and bought it immediately. The seller just posted it about 30 minutes before I bought it and that rare gem is out of print and people are asking for 100 to 150 dollars for it so it was a steal.
I hadn’t seen Blue Velvet until about six months ago. And I viewed it…from a one dollar Goodwill DVD. It was the perfect way to see that particular title as…it wasn’t really my thing. But I can understand why some people would really like it. One viewing and done for me on that one. So my recommendation would be to watch it once by whatever means available (have a friend who really loves it bring it by for a watch one night)…and just see what you think of it. Not a terrible movie, just a title I don’t think I need to own.
Great video, I'm kinda hopping back into the hobby after taking a number of years off. My vinyl collection has taken over lol So I'm late to the 4K game. When I was younger, I felt like I bought every DVD I could find and had to down size. Now I have got a decent sized bluray collection of the stuff I love. I bought my first 4K a few weeks ago of "The Natural" even though I don't have a 4K TV yet, lol. I am in the process of upgrading, but I couldn't argue with the price and it being a sealed copy at 8 bucks.
Congratulations on getting back in the game!! When you got to 4k it changes things, especially when you also get an OLED tv...it is like watching movies for the first time and in a way you could never imagine... I recommend making a list of things you want, start checking out the boutique labels, and don't get too far off track until you get things you really want!! But open yourself up to titles you've never seen because we can change so much over time that films you may have always skipped, you now find interesting!
Great point that the titles in these sales are going to be there later. I bought stuff from the Arrow, Criterion, and Kino early in the sales this month. Arrow kind of runs out, so I bought the most heavily on that. But now that the month is on it's final leg I wondered if I should spend the rest of the budget on those three sales. My real worry started to be 20th Century Fox stuff even though it's not on sale. They aren't making any more of that stuff so I need to get my favorites in a hurry. I worry that WB or Paramount is coming up on that eventually too.
@snerfu I really think that it is important not to get caught up in the sales and remember the way you really want to collect and focus your money on those things and the things that tend to run out and go out of print! Chasing OOP titles is expensive! So, if you spent too much money on movies that you can always get, just because they are on sale, and then you don't have the money to buy the limited edition stuff, you end up costing yourself way more money later!
As far as Criterion at Barnes and Noble goes. It must be that we’re at the end of July because just like you, my Barnes and Noble doesn’t seem to have anything new or restocks. A lot of stuff seems to just be sitting.
I get not blind buying criterion’s they have a lot of movies that go outside most people’s wheelhouse. That being said I’ve done it a few times I have a wider range of movies that I like than most people, I can count maybe 3 or 4 blind buys that I regretted buying in 25 years. Thanks for the shoutout! It’s hard to keep up with new releases and track down everything you missed. eBay is killing me right now so many awesome things, man I need that Christopher Lee Dracula set! Great video brother
@80sMadeConsumer thanks man!! Yeah, overall the blind buys don't worry me as much as committing money to things I wasn't targeting, that will pretty much always be readily available, when there are big titles I really want that are much more limited and expensive- if that makes sense
I recently got a BluRay of Sleepwalkers from Scream Factory, came with a cool slip cover, wasn't a new release. Good semi-horror movie that features the 78 TransAm. Pretty sure it's still available, but you prolly already know that (or hate it, lol)
I bought about 15 4k movies on prime day. The newest title I bought was inception (2008). The oldest was 2001 a space odyssey (1968). Nothing was more than $10. Good deals for me.
#1 rule : only buy what you know makes you happy in your collection. I understand - I bought the WeET Ed. of The Amazing Spiderman 1&2 in 4K - those are very expensive - But those are my fav. Spiderman movies - so I didn’t mind paying the price. I’ve passed up lots of sales , because I want Quality over quantity. 😎
Yeah I just started my new job on July 1st and then all these sales dropped and I'm like I haven't got paid yet but man I spent my money I had scrolled away on a bunch of movies. I forgot about the Barnes and Noble sale that's still going on for criteria until the end of the month. My wallet just threw up. And by the way I don't understand girl fight and bound on criterion. To me, those are two film that don't need to be in a criterion collection IMO .Then again I don't blind buy either. I wanted to get some Wes Anderson movies to kind of finish my collection. A PT Anderson movie..... And Easy Rider.
Personally I think blind buying something more expensive like Criterions is fine if you're willing to sell it back on a site like ebay and get between 50-70% of your money back. At least that's what I do especially with Kino titles.
