Omang? - Shangaan art

Traditional art has become an important tenet of modernist Africa, but for the community of Xivuyini in northern Limpopo it has always been more than just aesthetics, their art is also functional. In this programme we look at the fertility of the region and how the Shangaan in Elim not only use wood from the forests for carving, but also the clay from the earth for pots, fruits from the trees for food and herbs from the veld for medicine. Series produced and directed by Bjorn Rudner for the Media Peace Centre and funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

People in Elim can not be reffered to as Shangaan. This is because Shangaan is not a language, its a tribe. And XiTsonga cannot be reduced to one tribe. maChangani people just like vaShika, vaNdawu, vaHlengwe or vaCopi are all Tsonga tribes. therefore Not all people who reside in Elim are maChangani. A quick lesson, maChangani people have surnames such as Mdluli, Sibuyi, Sibiya, Mkhatswa etc therefore its unfair to call a Masingi person who is a Shika or a Mashava person who is a Ndau a Shangaan.
