    We’ve been using footpath on norcal mountain bike trails for the past year and it has worked marvelously, providing turn by turn directions on trails.

    That is dead impressive, I wonder how well it detects public paths outdoors and private property tho. In some countries like England, there are pathways that you can see in Maps but are, in theory, private.

    Been using it for years to map hikes and dirt bike trails. Especially good for finding unknown unofficial trails that just show up on satellite view. You can trace them out manually and the app will navigate you offline in the back country.

    I photograph MTB and trail run events and I find Footpath very useful on the Ultra. I still however think its insane that a watch like this does not ship with these features. Apple clearly does not understand this market.

    Thanks for the info. I was surprised to hear you say Chautauqua. I did not know Colorado had one. I live close to Chautauqua in New York State but I’m in Pennsylvania near the border. It is a beautiful little town. Looks pretty amazing there also. I run and hike here wheee I live in the Allegheny National Forest and just had my ultra 2 for a week. I appreciate your time.

      I have an Apple Watch 7 and Shokz OpenRun headphones and they work really well together for running and MTB. I haven't used FootPaths, but I don't see any reason why that app wouldn't work with the OpenRuns too.

    At a time when Strava is royally demonstrating how not to communicate a subscription hike, apps like this are great. However, the thing that hooks me in are the segments. While I don’t chase live segments, I do like to compare between and across rides. This doesn’t do that. So I’ll take the mapping of Strava and mix it with my Garmin and out comes. I also have an Ultra and am enjoying it as a premium smart watch but to be honest I could have just kept my Garmin. I wish the developer well as we need more apps like this. I can only hope that Strava has plans to incorporate proper mestric tracking into their apps. If they did this on the Ultra, I think it would be a game changer. Likewise, get 5 hours on a phone and many would simply not need the bike computer.

    • @iMaxPatten

      Strava being a huge company and having social features like segments does give them a sizable moat!

    • @NeilLavitt
      @NeilLavitt 2 года назад

      @@iMaxPatten I’ve never understood why Garmin did not incorporate such a feature, or maybe I have missed it. Connect collects all the metrics and can read and analyse others fit files, why not do something with it?

      @@iMaxPatten I think the closest is Rde with GPS - trouble is, that is quite expensive - close to the Strava app sub over a year. I think I will be staying with Strava and hope they have plans to develop deeper and meaningfully. Everything is becoming expensive, server costs, power to run said servers and the workers who power the service. Makes sense that there is this hike. Just, how badly can you communicate this? Shockingly bad and it's not the first time, remember the sudden Apple Health sync stop. Didn't bother to tell anyone, just stopped. Then they reversed it.

      @@iMaxPatten do you know if there are any apps that let you download maps to the watch from the phone and then can leave the phone behind? AllTrails rep told me that you have to have your phone the entire time and the Apple Watch app isn’t a stand alone app.

    • @iMaxPatten
      @iMaxPatten  2 года назад +1

      @@Oharsh0928 ohhh wasn’t aware of that (I don’t use alltrails premium). The closest I’m aware of is an app like this or WorkOutdoors which allow you to import GPX files from another app like AllTrails. I won’t give you a tutorial here on how to do so because it’s sadly very complicated on iOS but it is possible. I still would advise caution going deep in the woods with just an Apple Watch battery, even if it’s an Ultra

    Yes, this app is closing the biggest gap on the Apple Watch Ultra for runners and other athletes. What I was looking at Strava to fix, but they didn't. This app needs all the attention it can get! With this app, I can now train in the same way with Apple Watch Ultra, as I did with my Garmin Epix. And then the Apple Watch Ultra is also a smart watch.

  • @jessewigent9776

    Please stop acting/speaking/etc. as if Apple should be developing the apps to include and be everything to everyone. The whole basis is that it is a computer/platform/form factor for developers to create apps for. For that purpose alone it is infinitely more versatile and powerful than Garmin. Garmin is a purpose built tool, and arguably the leader for that segment, but sucks as a smart wearable in comparison. Nobody complains that a Garmin isn’t an Apple Watch, because they don’t expect it to be. The market segments aren’t even really merging. Smart wearables are overtaking niche tools like Garmin. And I hope other “content creators” stop the Apples to Garmins mischaracterizations too. Just my rant.
