    I really loved how when Jamie hits his dad it's not even a heroic or happy moment for him, for a second you can even see it in his face that's he's terrified he's just turned into his abusive father who lashes out in anger... God it breaks my heart every time

    • @Mikethebeast131
      @Mikethebeast131 3 года назад +86

      As someone who wrestled with similar demons, I interpreted the scene differently. I might be projecting, but to me it seemed like Jaime had built an entire persona to mask how he felt inside because of his abusive father- a small scared little boy play acting at tough. He hits his father because he was finally building up enough positive self-worth to assert himself, not because he was lashing out( though I see how it can be read that way). I think the interaction would have been different if this happened in private, but in this case he becomes exposed to his entire team. His mask is peeled off and , in a moment they can see his true self and can imagine an entire history of abuse.
      The scene is so beautifully shot because they take the time to show the other players reactions and their hesitancy, like they're processing a software update to their perceived reality as to who Jaime Tart is. It's so overwhelming that he just freezes, paralyzed by his vulnerability. Coach Beard acts true to form, ever the protector, but it's Roy Kent who sees the situation for what it is and realizes that he has the capacity to be a nurturer. He gives Jaime exactly what he needs in that moment, recognition, acceptance, and care. It's a transformative moment for both of them.

      To me, his expression was fearful and sad. Fear like when a kid blurts out something they’re not supposed to, and sadness because he hit his dad, the one man he was supposed to look up to and respect. However, the man in him kept him standing and ready to fight.
      Such deeply conflicting emotions.

      @@calvinjohnson6242 Yes yes yes, the fact that so many characters had an amazing arc in this show, even if it was small, and even minor characters like Trent Crimm. Just goes to show how much of an impact Ted had, and how much the characters truly helped each other.

    • @johntate6537
      @johntate6537 5 месяцев назад +6

      And also he says it immediately after seeing Jamie's dad abusing him after the match. The parallels between his own experience and what Jamie is going through are strong. I think it's noticeable that experiences with breaking up with his wife, with his son and with Jamie are the three things that seem to trigger his panic attacks. If Ted is a welcome substitute father figure for Jamie, along with Roy, then I think that Jamie is also in a sense a son figure to Ted. I love that at the end of series 3 they revisit the scene of Ted seeing Jamie at the end of a match through the window, but this time instead of it being Jamie being abuse by his father it's Jamie with Keeley and Roy, probably the two people after his mum and stepdad who love him most in the world, keeping him company and enjoying their victory with him, and at last Ted knows that it's safe to go home to his own son because his other son is OK and safe.

    Jamie's growth and journey through the show was absolutely one of my favorite parts. Heck, the show had so many people who blossomed, who grew, who really became the best versions of themselves (as Jamie said) and really it all goes back to Ted really embracing what it is to be a leader, what it is to be a man without being toxic, what it means to truely love and support and care about those around him. Such an amazing show.

    Every man searches for catharsis with their father, daughters with their mothers. It's the biggest source of mental trauma in peoples' lives (on average). We all want to free ourselves from the shackles of our youth, many never do. Some do it with years of therapy, while some do it in a single moment with a single punch. My favorite moment in the whole series is when he hits his dad. Not for the violence, not because his dad deserved it (and he certainly did, and more imo), but for Jamie finally deciding to face his greatest fear. He cried afterward bc he was finally ABLE to. Then Roy comes over, putting aside HIS own personal trauma to embrace his friend. Beautiful writing. A story for the ages.

      Although I see where you're coming from, I'd point out that by the end Jamie is seen in a much better place in his life. He's basically loved by his team mates, and I think in their own way also by both Keeley and Roy, so - having gone through some terrible stuff, he's come out the other side and really has become the 'best version of himself' that, having done the work, he really deserves to be. I think we see Nate instead a little nearer the start of that journey. He may be accepted more quickly by the team a) because some team members will recognise that, as they bullied him also, they probably do owe him somewhat, and b) I think maybe through all of their experiences and counselling they may just have got better at forgiving people and giving them a chance than they were when Jamie first returned. Just my two pence. Everyone's got their own interpretation, and I'm sure yours is no less valid than mine. These are just my thoughts on perhaps an alternate way to look at it.
