This was a South Bank Show presentation, Yes 1TV!. Rarely do we have such erudite documentaries nowadays. Ashkenazy is a global treasure, I was saddened to learn of his recent decision to retire from public performances. Thankfully he has left a huge recorded legacy.
I just adore Ashkenazy, and I have Christopher Nupen to thank for all of the wonderful documentaries he’s done with and about Ashkenazy, from the mid 1960’s. I already loved his piano music, but his personality is so inspiring and his gifts so prodigious that I can never hear from him enough, through whatever music he engages in! And I’m really glad this was made available to RUclips viewers, because I never knew it existed! Thank you!
Ashkenazy has the same voice now as then…lovely! Always my favourite Chopin pianist next to Rubinstein. I saw him at the festival hall in 1962 and what a programme that was. Mostly Chopin and he played five encores. We couldn’t get enough of this young Russian who had just come to the west.
Many thanks for allowing us to see this wonderful program again. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find dvd recordings of Ashkenazy: even tried talking to his agents with little luck so increasingly relying on guys like yourself to keep the light shining!
Muy bueno el documental, me da risa cuando tiene que hacer el concurso porque lo obliga la unión soviética, porque sino le sacaban el subsidio, ahora bien, si eres tan bueno, no te hubiera importado abandonar la unión soviética. Te hubieras ido a otro país a probar tu talento. En fin...
But Rachmaninov also expressed much sadness, nakend and sentimental however beautiful. Like in literature OR poetry, IT is more powerful and penetrating when IT is sublimated, hinted,
One of the most complete & satisfying musicians to listen to. Sad that he is now retired.

He can play a lot of notes, but there’s no SOUL; there’s no interpretation

Ashkenazys Chopin is rational and somehow objective
It moves me not by his
passion
Or I may say that Ashkenazys
passion is controlled
Barber adagio for strings is so full of alle human feelings that are not declared, but expressed without Pitt OR tests, thereby more powerful
But Rachmaninov also expressed much sadness, nakend and sentimental however beautiful. Like in literature OR poetry, IT is more powerful and penetrating when IT is sublimated, hinted,

Yes he was in jury.
As a pianist he peaked in the late 1950s with the recording of Chopin's etudes on Melodia
