This is the song that established Bobby as a solo artist after being removed from New Edition. People recognize him as a great singer and dancer but his rapping is underrated. Check out when he played "5 Fingers of Death" on Sway's Universe a couple of years ago. He can freestyle with the best of them!
Yes, Bobby did popularize the singing and rapping in a song. Pop/Top 40 stations in the 80's didn't play rap (at least in the area I lived at the time). This song became a pop hit in 1988 and at first they played the song without his rap. After some weeks they stared to play the song with the rap. It went to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.
How did I ever miss this comment?! Glad he got around to doing the requested NE song but I love Hi-five so so much and Tennessee for the powerful message in those lyrics! Hi-five also had 🔥 songs “Playing Hard To Get” and “Never Should Have Let You Go” from the Sister Act 2 soundtrack. Have you heard those too?
Jack Reacts You should react to the studio version of Rock Witcha cause that is the bigger hit from the music video version which is a remix of the song. Roni is another incredible ballad by Bobby you should check out.
Fun fact: this song is about his on multiple night stands with Janet Jackson and how she ghost him right after their little fling. When he said "Jackie" he was referring to her.
Fun fact. Every song Babyface produced on this album he sang the demo lead vocals. When Bobby went to sing his lead, he had Babyface's version in his headphones as a guide track. That's why he sang it softer
Your guess was right, it’s Babyface & LA Reid on the production. This came out in 1988, while Run DMC had early 80’s flows, so whoever wrote Bobby’s rhymes would’ve made them sound more modern.
I was skeptical that Babyface could write raps, so I looked for confirmation. There’s an article on Medium where Daryl Simmons claims he and Bobby wrote the rhymes on this song.
Bobby Brown was a FORCE who had the best producers. I'm not even gonna decide my fave song from him, but please do Roni next! It's another Babyface production and Face also sings background.
Michael’s my all time favorite and now seeing Bobby is dope! I’m guessing we’re getting My Prerogative and Roni soon! New Jack Swing is probably my favorite genre and I’m only 22 haha
When Bobby Brown was in the group New Editon, he was known as the "bad boy." He wanted to be the lead because he felt he was the most talented and in my opinion, he was. He was the best singer and dancer and it only made sense that he would go solo. After this, can you please react to his song "Roni." Thanks.
Jack, you got the best energy that I've seen out of others doing this. In 1988, Bobby B was our "Drake". This whole album is good and every song on it is 🔥.
This is Bobby Brown's second solo album released in 1988 around the same time New Edition's N.E. Heartbreak was released. That same year, they went on tour along with singer Al B. Sure.
this was a Babyface production. Most songs back then Babyface was on the keys and background, LA was on drums, Kayo from the Deele also was on bass. They did so many artists songs and hits. #1 team of all time!
OK Jack here's another lesson for you. Bobby Brown was the first R&B artist to both sing and rap on his songs (as you quite rightly noted). About five years later (1993) rap group "The Lords of the Underground" released their debut album.. "Here comes the Lords" which featured a track that spoke about this trend that Bobby brown had started of have rap solos on his record. The Lords Of the Underground track is called "What's Going On".. and goes as follows... "What's going on, what's going on, everybody's gotta have a rap in their song.." ..because by 1993 it was almost obligatory for R&B songs to have a rap solo. I for one can say that it was often the raps solo section that I like the most. (check out Keith Sweat's 1993 hit .. "I Want Her" featuring.. Lisa Left Eye Lopez of TLC. It's a typical slick 90's style video that has Lisa Left Eye Lopez rap solo drop right at the end, and is just the best ever (Check it out ).. ruclips.net/video/oqt-gbATwY0/видео.html). Before Don't Be Cruel (which was Bobby Browns breakout song) R&B be and Hip Hop rode in separate lanes. For example during this period it was all too common to hear people (black people) into R&B, express a dislike for Hip Hop. Strange you might think but true nonetheless. Can you imagine anyone today saying.. "I love R&B but I'm not into Hip Hop." The two are so interconnected that it wouldn't make any sense. The thing that needs to be pointed out is that Hip Hop in 1987 (though starting to gain a lot of mainstream traction) was still very much on the come up, so only teenagers (and maybe those in their early to mid 20's) would have been heavily into it. Bobby Brown and Teddy Riley were both teenagers at the time so trying to bridge the divide would have seemed like an exciting challenge (and the obvious thing to do going forward). That's effectively what New Jacks Swing was all about, Hip Hop loving kids wanting to fuse their love for this new and exciting musical artform with their love for the R&B standards their parents first introduced them to. However, Bobby Browns way of doing both the singing and rapping did not catch on 🤷🏽♂️. Instead rappers were brought in, which is what kickstarting the R&B and Hip Hop collaboration thing that is so prevalent today. I think this has a lot to do with what I mentioned before about the Hip Hop generation being much younger. Bobby Brown was a teenager so singing and rapping was what he knew where as most of the established R&B artist of the day would have been 5 and 10 years older, probably feeling a little too old to try to suddenly come off as rappers. Getting a young emerging rapper with Hip Hop swag (which was different to R&B at the time) would have been easier and make it more appealing to the ever expanding Hip Hop market very much on course to concur the world. I hope that wasn't to much for you.
Baby face produced don’t be cruel and majority of the album. Fun fact... New edition has rapped on ever record since candy girl. Smooth b from nice and smooth is responsible for Bobby’s rhymes. He’s been writing them since the king of stage album. Don’t be cruel is also a more polished version of baby I wanna tell you something from his king of stage album. Give it a listen.
You need to watch the Bobby Brown story on BET. It shows how he separated from New Edition and went solo. He put 150% into this album. Proved he could do it without the band and showed he was a force to be reckoned with!!
Other Bobby songs : Get away, Humpin' around,My prerogative .Please start looking into New Edition and their solo careers: Bell Biv Divoe, Ralph Tresvant , Johnny Gill.
Since you doing new jack you should do motownphilly by Boyz 2 Men or if you want to stick with Bobby Brown do on our own from the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack.
so many videos from the late 80's seems to take place in a back alley in the bad part of town at night. it was a theme of that time. everybody took it to the streets.

At this time Bobby Brown was maybe the biggest star on the planet and you should check out his other songs from this album rock witchu , roni and my Perogative
In 1988 the biggest music stars on the planet were Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, George Michael and Madonna. Bobby was the biggest R&B star of 1988/89 with the Don't Be Cruel album, but internationally it was MJ, Whitney, George Michael and Madonna. Terence Trent D'Arby wasn't too far behind off the back of Introducing The Hardline..., but George's Faith album was the biggest blockbuster album after MJ's Bad (both released in 1987). MJ and George dominated 1987/88 domestically and internationally. Then Janet came through with RN1814 in 89 which was a game changer and dominated the industry from 1989/90. Madonna's Like A Prayer album also dropped in 89 and was huge. I remember that time in music. So much incredible music that you didn't have to search for. Prince was still at the cutting edge and on his incredible run of albums from Dirty Mind to Batman. I can't put into words how great an era it was for music.
@@anthonyanderson9303 Then came the Hammer Man. Mc Hammer was the biggest star of 1990. The gap between Janet's RN1814, Bobby's Don''t Be Cruel and MJ's Dangerous album was dominated by Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em.
Highly recommend from the Bobby Album “Humpin Around, Two can play that game, getaway, lovin you down, pretty little girl, that’s the way love is” from the forever album “Feelin inside, my place, been around world, forever” also on our own from the ghostbusters 2 sound track. I just wanna reiterate what I see several people request! Can We Talk by Tevin Campbell!!! Babyface may have written all the love songs of the 80s and 90s....and THAT one is my top favorite!!

OMG Yesssssss! React to that!!! That's my #1 Babyface song!!
Bobby Brown has real raw talent that he taps into instantly. He’s a real star. Off his billboard number one album. He was the first to sing and rap
And the only one in NE to win a Grammy.
That’s my favorite Bobby Brown song! I could definitely relate to this back in the day.
