After reading the study, I learned that even blow drying and flat ironing put women at risk due to the heat producing harmful chemicals. It also states that being obese/having low physical activity puts you more at risk. The American Cancer Society recommends that we should exercise and maintain our weight for prevention. People don’t want to address these risk factors though. It’s easier to point fingers at a relaxer.
The whole thing is about the chemicals the Government told the manufacturers of the hair relaxers to stop using and they did not. Not only that some of the chemicals was not disclosed in the ingredients plus no where on the box it say may cause cancer or any health issues. Because if they did that would have given the people a choice if the woman or man wanted to use their products. We was the target because all the relaxer boxes have a little black girl on the kiddie perms and all the adults perms have black woman and the s curl or jheri curl has a black boy or man.
@felicialang6382 it doesn't help to keep eating meat because many of them have chemicals that may cause cancer. I would be more concerned about what I eat versus what I apply to my hair.
I've never been able to relax in 15 minutes or less, even when done professionally. So going by the time on the product is almost impossible. But I'm careful to protect my scalp. I am absolutely overjoyed to now have relaxed hair after over 8 years being natural. I took the knowledge I learned from being natural and apply it to relaxed hair. My relaxed hair is growing fast and healthy, it's manageable and beautiful to me. I relax my hair every 5 months. This study isn't changing my mind.
Happily relaxed after 10 years of being natural too :) Hairlicious method has enabled me to get my relaxer time down to 15 minutes even by myself, super recommend!
No longer relaxed but try presectioning your hair before applying. Place hard plastic (not metal) alligator hair clips at the end of your newgrowth for each section if self relaxing. That way you now that when you hit the alligator clip, you don’t apply any further. Lastly try to have a friend, sibling or spouse help you apply.
THANK YOU APRIL!!! I'm so sick of being constantly questioned about the choice to relax my hair. Its my decision because its suitable for my lifestyle. I do not plan to go natural - at least not at this time in my life. Additionally I've learned my hair & take pride of the products I choose to use in my hair. I think whether you choose to relax your hair or not shouldn't depict or define you as a person. This is an eye opener & I'm appreciative for this video. I have been using relaxers in my hair since the late 70's and have never had uterine cancer. But I agree with what some of the ladies said, poor diet and underlying conditions can be the cause as well. Cigarettes are causing lung cancer but they're still being sold. I use Affirm relaxers and they work better in my hair, I also stretch my relaxers.

Omg as an African woman I agree. I was natural for over 14 years and had 3 fibroid surgeries in those years. Decided to relax my hair Feb 22. I READ the instructions and watched 2 million videos to help change my views about relaxers and help educate me on how to relax my hair. For the first time I realised that relaxers were not to make your hair bone straight or should not be put on direct scalp, and the major eye opener was the lenght of time to leave the shampoo in your hair so that ever relaxer recidue is removed, never knew that but guess what the box says it. This helped my decision to relax my hair. There are directions to adhere to. The silicone and bbls people do their bodies without being pressured to do, no one talks about possible side effects of removing and adding fat to their bodies but I digress.
I appreciate research and documentations because as you said, it helps you to be more cautious and mindful about a person's well-being. The headlines on the news makes things scary. Reading down at the study's results, it's not so bad. The way it's portrayed, it seemed astronomical, like cancer will mostly affect a large population of people who relax and use hair straightning chemicals. It's unfortunate that even black women who take participate in these research studies are only 7%. Had it been like 30% or a higher number, maybe the results would be different. Also, black women across the world have been relaxing their hair for so many years. Hopefully, they could pull in our aunties and grandmas in these experiments. I'm still going to relax though.
Thank you for doing this video! I didn’t know what to do. Natural is nice, but not convenient! I do have fibroids….A doctor once told me the two had nothing to do with each other. Seems like no one knows anything for sure. When I was natural the fibroids got bigger🧐🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
I've been natural since age 24, now 43. I've had fibroids the whole time. I had a myomectomy at 25 to remove them and they still came back while wearing a natural. My doctor also told me that fibroids aren't caused from relaxers.
Some people with natural think they are superior 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ I’m natural for the fourth time 🤦🏽♀️ it’s just hair and I’m thinking about getting a perm . I have 4c hair and it’s time consuming.
i stretch my relaxers out but it is because I am a cancer survivor of neuroendecrine system. its a rare cancer. The oncologist advised me to stretch or even discontinue any kind of chemical in my hair. i think it depends on the person and their hair. I agree to follow ure instincts.

I loved the video. I think this topic is a personal choice. I heard the discussion on a radio show as well!..They were condemning relaxed hair. Again I say this is a personal choice!..
Yes I found this study very interesting as well. It hasn't changed my mind on relaxers personally as I try to limit chemicals in my life in other ways like making my own body butter, using aluminum free deodorant, eat mostly organic food at home. Personally I plan to go natural because I really want a change and just feeling bored with my hair but baby if it's too much, I'm coming right back to relaxed! That is the beauty of black hair we can change it up and have fun with it. Not everything has to be that serious and political with our hair. Do what you wish but I'm choosing to be free with mine. I agree, that it is best to stretch and no need to relax every 6 weeks as they said at one point in time. But my opinion, allow this to open your eyes to other ways that you take in chemicals everyday as I find it hard to believe that with the way most women I know relax now (maybe like 4 or 5 times a year and not bone straight) that this is the sole cause of cancer. As an epidemiologist, I'm like hmmm I know there are other factors at play that contribute to why a lot of black women are in poor health and have higher cancer rates
LOL! Yeeessss Ms. Ma'am, everything you said and more!!! How about the chemtrials?... I put my plants outside the other day for rain water and they all turned brown...I mean make it make sense. We are surrounded by harmful chemicals. Anywho, I love everything about your comment! Thank you for watching and sharing!!!
Come on with it April👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I have a question how do a person manage their hair for once a year? I have 4c relax hair and it’s thick. My stylist still love the thickness but I can’t manage it. But if someone was to tell me how to keep my hair manageable with a relaxer once a year without breakage I will do that.
I have 4 c hair too and I have never been able to manage stretching without breakage as the difference between my new growth and relaxed hair is huge. The longest I can do is 4 months smh. Maybe keeping my hair in a long term protective style but that means I'd have to do those back to back and that comes with other issues. Smh
I never thought to blame my mom's hair relaxer for her cancer. I also never thought to blame my mom. This comment section is playing fast and loose with respectability politics.
I didn't read the study but this is easy to me: black women have been relaxing their hair for more than a century so it's easy to see if uterine cancer is more prevalent in black women than other races . I know it's not that easy because when the 2019 study came out I read somewhere that yes it was more prevalent in black women but they found it in some places of Africa too where women there didn't use relaxers. So the study isn't conclusive at all. Women should no be bullied for being relaxed or discriminated for being natural. I'm sorry but the US is such a racist country even though black people arrived in the country before many other Caucasians immigrants even if they were slaves. I know it's off topic but seriously at the end isn't about the money?; If you're famous and rich you can wear your hair in every style and it's ok, if you're poor it's another story. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for All of that info, appreciate it. After all these years/ decades, never heard anything quite like this. Now they are saying perms/relaxers can cause cancer, WOW. Not only that, but hair dryers and flat irons/ hot combs etc. as well, that's a Double WOW! I have curly hair and I don’t use perms. But I had brain surgeries, so I have pain treatments every 3months. Due to that, I have to Blow Dry and Flat Iron my hair for weeks before and after. Now I have to think twice about that. Omgh...geez, What's next!?! Smh!
The environment we live in also causes cancers. The foods we eat and even the water we drink. Most black women don’t keep up with their health either. Plus, I had a few YT patients (young) have uterine cancer I only had one black and she’s been natural all her life. So sometimes genetics can play a part. This is why the test is incomplete because if yt WW can die from it and never used a perm nor relaxer and a black ww can die from it never being relaxed maybe it’s genetics.
White supremacy/ ideals are alive and well in our community as well as every other minority group. Saying I hate a narrative doesn't make it not true because it bothers you. Your opinion is VALID, but you don't need to ignore ObVIOUS and systematic issues to convince yourself of an opinion. Things have progressed in this community, but that's because we've been able to deal with some of the shame associated with white supremacy. There is no way to avoid being influenced by a Eurocentric narrative when the dominant culture is Eurocentric. BTW, you don't need to be anything near to white or from Europe to be Eurocentric, therefore you don't need to be "built" like anything. Like I said before, having an opinion is valid, but you clearly don't have a deep (based on educated research) understanding on how white supremacy effects our community. Relax your hair as much you want, but if you did a little research you would understand that relaxing our hair goes much deeper than just a convenient hair style.
I gave up relaxers during Covid lockdown. I started working at home and no longer needed the convenience of the relaxers. I also discovered headband wigs when I am feeling too lazy to manage it.
Yeeesss Headband wig!!! I love mine too. At some point I'm going to discontinue relaxing as well but IDK when yet. Thank you for watching and sharing!!!
This is an interesting topic. Thank you for the information. I was also looking at a documentary on meat the other day..in RUclips and it explain some meats such as hot dogs are pink because of the added preservatives..which has been linked to cancer. Due to the risk factor of cancer, some countries do not use these.. preservatives.. the end result are dark brown hot dogs. The US uses these preservatives because they know that if they did not.. people would not purchase brown hot dogs, ham, and other meats.. and the companies would not make money.💲💲 The US knows the risk factors and still uses them.SHM

By the way Asian women Indian also have an extreme high percentage of fibroid and cancer( My best friend is an oncologist). They don't relax their hair????
Many asian including Indian women do relax their hair. Not as often for obvious reasons but they have been known to use them to remove the natural wavy texture alot of then have to their hair. It's not unheard of for them to use the cream crack.
@@peachyrican1313 Lol ok if you say it’s not true then it must not be true. They wouldn’t sell the product in these countries if no one was buying. It is true. Yea a lot of them have straight hair but some do have waves and curls.
It may not be unmanageable to you but it could still be considered that way for others. Natural hair requires more up keep especially if you don’t want to just do a puff or some French braids. My mental health is much better when I don’t have to worry about my hair.
It is a manageability issue! Y’all really believe that just because people don’t want to spend all day doing twists, braid outs, wash and gos that is indicative of self hate. And most naturals are wearing wigs because it is a manageability issue. We can love ourselves and acknowledge that natural hair requires a lot of work. I was natural for almost a decade and I felt emancipated when I went back to a relaxer!
@@patriciaduke5169 why does natural hair have to take all day? It use to be and feel that way for me but then I realized that i didn't have to do that. I can wash my hair, put product in it and go. Its very simple. Some women always try to do braid out and twists instead of wearing their hair as is. Plus, alot of these wigs girls do are more time consuming than doing their real hair.
The fact that y’all are taking it serious blows my mind. Y’all sit there with cancer and broke off hair and the other women will be sitting worry free knowing they have a lower chance of getting cancer. “Healthy relaxed hair”🤣🤣 too funny. Wet yo hair and tell me what it does. They way black people’s hair is structured, it is suppose to curl/coil when wet. Y’all gone on somewhere😭🤣
I want to go back to relaxers and that's the relaxer I want to use , the one by Avlon, because I heard it doesn't burn.....what do you guys think.....????
More research is needed. There are LOTS of reasons why BW have a high risk for poor reproductive health outcomes. Lack of screenings, poor nutrition, underlying inflammatory conditions and poor b1rth c0ntrol options. There could be many causes.
Interesting enough, perfumes, pollution and poor diet will kill us way before a relaxer and I'm natural but the chemicals in general is causing all of the allergens and chronic illness!

Smh
@@Schrodingers_Kat Absolutely. Not everyone's hair can withstand long stretches.
Can't we just take steps to apply them more safely to reduce the risk by reducing skin contact?
I never thought to blame my mom's hair relaxer for her cancer. I also never thought to blame my mom. This comment section is playing fast and loose with respectability politics.
All of a sudden the class action lawsuits are popping up. And reading: ‘Just sign up’ after answering a few questions.
Well stated !
That's a lot of mental gymnastics to try and sugar coat the devastating effects of relaxers.
April thank you so much for letting me know
White supremacy/ ideals are alive and well in our community as well as every other minority group.
The US uses these preservatives because they know that if they did not.. people would not purchase brown hot dogs, ham, and other meats.. and the companies would not make money.💲💲
The US knows the risk factors and still uses them.SHM
Sorry for the typos.😇
The food we eat every single day can cause cancer full of pesticides and hormones you can't win for losing.
To be honest I'm mentally and physically exhausted 😢
Thank you April interesting topic
If only I could go to a hair supply place and get a lye relaxer without having to have a cosmetology license, that would be great!
Everything doesn't have to be toxic... its on purpose. Are you all getting it yet??
It's a scare tactic.
They need to let me know what relaxer brands they using so I don’t use ‘em
All relaxers have dangerous chemicals
@@tecklafurro2040 Yes however they are not dangerous if they are applied regularly
@@riverboy6112 Regularly?
She said I do not 😆 💕💕💕 # Team Creamy the girl's that get it get it some need the relaxers and that's 👌🏻 I've had them since I was a little girl 💞 🙌🏼 and I'm still going to get not excessively and I'm still going to work with the companies 😮💞💞💞
Loved the video.
Hair straightener doesn't necessarily mean relaxer. That's what I found out recently!
@Ashley It's not true, to get it straight they simply straighten their hair with a blow dryer.
@@HereDiianasExactly.
@@Ashley-bm9gcNot true, most already have naturally straight hair.
@@peachyrican1313 Lol ok if you say it’s not true then it must not be true. They wouldn’t sell the product in these countries if no one was buying. It is true. Yea a lot of them have straight hair but some do have waves and curls.
"Manageability" aka "I don't know how to take care of the hair that grows out of my head". I really dislike referring to natural hair as unmanageable.
It may not be unmanageable to you but it could still be considered that way for others. Natural hair requires more up keep especially if you don’t want to just do a puff or some French braids. My mental health is much better when I don’t have to worry about my hair.
I agree. Natural hair is who we are
It is a manageability issue!
Agreed!
And me over here eating a Doritos and chocolate… tsk tsk so we have to look at what we putting in our body especially!!!!
I want to go back to relaxers and that's the relaxer I want to use , the one by Avlon, because I heard it doesn't burn.....what do you guys think.....????
Keep screaming Sis!!
This is nikki anderson my mother does my hair I don't travel
This is nikki anderson I don't use perms
If woman want to relax their hair welp that’s on them. They were warned.
2:52 Wait! Back when you WERE in your 20s? You look no older than 25 now!! #BlackDontCrack
More research is needed. There are LOTS of reasons why BW have a high risk for poor reproductive health outcomes. Lack of screenings, poor nutrition, underlying inflammatory conditions and poor b1rth c0ntrol options. There could be many causes.
Definitely poor nutrition and struggle love
Exactly my mom was relaxed but she never had cancer
@@Sunny-tc3ul fibroids infertility miscarriages hormone imbalance also from RELAXERS.
No relaxers also causes Fibroids, hormone imbalances, breast cancer ovarian cancer and a blue ooze around the brain
If you wouldn't put drano on your scalp you shouldn't use hair relaxers.
Some of these studies are biased 🥱🥱
Interesting enough, perfumes, pollution and poor diet will kill us way before a relaxer and I'm natural but the chemicals in general is causing all of the allergens and chronic illness!
