Wrestling Bios Presents - The WWF Debut of Rocky Maivia
Before he became the Great One, before he became The People's Champion, and before he became one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, Dwayne Johnson made his televised WWF debut in 1996. Having already had 4 WWF matches under his belt off the air and having spent some time in the USWA, Rocky Maivia made his debut at the 1996 Survivor Series pay per view, and all seemed to go as planned.
Over the coming months, Rocky Maivia would capture the Intercontinental Championship and begin a run with the title. During this time, the fans began turning on Rocky, and it seemed like this "sure thing" rookie sensation was going to being floundering in the WWF. When all was said and done, The Rock's debut months in the WWF proved to be his most trying time within the company.
This video looks at the debut of Rocky Maivia, long before Dwayne Johnson became The Rock in the WWF. Topics covered include:
02:02 - The Rock's family heritage
03:35 - Dwayne trains to become a wrestler
04:32 - Flex Kavana in the USWA
06:21 - Rocky Maivia at Survivor Series 1996
08:54 - Rocky Maivia wins the Intercontinental Championship
10:10 - The Rock's first ever WrestleMania
12:37 - Rocky Maivia joins The Nation of Domination
- Much More!

That heel turn was the best move for the rock he took out his frustrations out on that crowd with some of the best promos
But it felt rushed
@Envoy it is also WWE trying to recover from the financial problems
@@superlex611 shush
This is probably my favorite Wrestling Channel right now honestly, consistent uploads along with good content.
Jim Ross "That's blue chipper right there!" 😂😂
I feel as though WWE should’ve put more time into this character as a mid card talent having him have good matches with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Goldust and Owen Hart and British Bulldog also having some interactions with main event talent like Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker and Mankind and Sycho Sid and Bret The Hitman Hart
That's going to be a man right there that blue cheaper right there
The Rock would have called Rocky a jabroni for sure
If it wasn't for his potential he might been buried
Jabroni
I agree.
i know I am kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch new movies online ?
@Maximilian Jon flixportal :D
Back when *The* *Most* *Electrifying* *Man* *In* *Sports* *&* *Entertainment!* was just a spark...
1999 Rock was incredible. That stoic disdain he had. The promos. The way he ripped people apart verbally. The 500 dollar shirts. The sunglasses and Elvis sideburns.
I love seeing this channel grow. I will be bookmarking your website sir.
Don't forget about the "die Rocky die" chants.
Hard to believe he eventually became the most electrifying man in sports entertainment. Legend.
I like the intro music that plays at the beginning of the videos. It’s like a look into an alternate universe where the wrestlers jumped to WCW and this is what their ripoff themes would’ve been
Hahaha good call I didn't think of it like that:)
lol alternate wcw rip off universe where the old dinosaurs play. Much truth there!
I’m looking forward to the next part of this - a focus on the Rock through this up to his corporate phase...
Rock was fun to hate when he was the Corporate Champion.
Tayo Jones speak for yourself! I cheered him the whole time.
That jobber looks like The Scorpion King
Predictive programming?
He was never a jobber tho
@@jamaljamal59 wow that went WAY over yer head lmao
@@jbj7599 your mother
@@jamaljamal59 cool brah
One thing I love about these videos is that you always play a slightly remixed theme of the wrestler. It's a subtle thing but nice touch.
I remember Rocky's early days well because one of my best friends is Polynesian and was absolutely obsessed with Meng/Haku and he naturally liked Rocky when he started. Turning him heel was the start of big things for The Rock and IMO he peaked when he first won the WWF championship and joined the Corporation. Those promos were some of the best up there with Flair when he was attacking the crowd.
"The Rock says..."
The Rock says the hell with WWE HollyWood is my new home
May you PLEASE make a video on the Brooklyn Brawler??? He's a jobber, but man, he's been in so many matches with many performers. He's just as famous, just as infamous.
Yes, I agree out of respect they should make one of him.
He's not just a jobber, but also Pat Pattersons slobber!
@WrestlingBios u really should do a video on the Brooklyn Brawler that guy wrestled against everyone and was probably the best jobber of all time.
This Rocky Mavia guy never made it I assume.
Yea his career just kinda fizzled away. Kid had potential though.
Just wanted to say thank you for all the content.
Great news about the website!! You've done an awesome job with the channel and know you'll do the site right too! So glad to see you protect your hard work and to give us fans another option.
Congrats on the website, it’s so great to see you doing well, you are amazing at what you do and you provide wonderful content with striking consistency. Cheers, mate! Keep up the great work!
Congrats on 100k! You've earned it!
Another excellent video! I've come to really look forward to your uploads 👍
Keep up the great work!
Also, could we get a "Life and Career of Mr. Fuji" ??
I only knew him as a manager. Recently found out that he wrestled. Would love to hear his story.
Iconic as a manager. Iconic.
Great suggestion!
My ears always prick up when I hear the name "Pat Patterson" mentioned alongside any 'special relationship'.
Right what a creep
@@matthewlane518 🤣🤣🤣 great reply
I hope that's the only thing that pricks up
@@therealfrisco3859 Aw man
@@therealfrisco3859 lol. So close.
How many great future wrestling stars had their first victories against the Brooklyn Brawler

Thank you for another great video! Dwayne is one of the greatest success stories is pro wrestling. It's pretty rare to see a 2nd or 3rd generation wrestler not become successful in this business, though there are exceptions as people know. Even Vince, who once said that HHH will always be a mid-card wrestler, probably didn't see this coming with The Rock.
I remember people comparing Rocky Maivia and Prince Iaukea back in the day with both being equally despised. It is hard to believe how successful he became. He was also smart to abandon WWE for Hollywood when he did.
Why was iakeua disliked
@@michaelmccoy4506 He was mediocre in the ring. Maybe despised is a strong term.
More like irrelevant and irritating
The quote near the end about being authentic is so important and sometimes is taken for granted. I think this is why I liked Kofi Kingston as WWE Champion last year so much, he felt like an authentic good guy. I appreciated that about Kofi so much. And looking back at Rocky Maivia and how he was handled. The chia pet hair didn't help. Props to throwing in his original theme music, I was always kind of fond of how it sounded.
I keep forgetting how much of a doof the Rock looked on day one.
Great vids man, keep up good work! glad your subs are growing as they should!
Been watching your channel for a few weeks I love it keep it up man got a request could you make more Rock videos maybe some about his fueds with Triple H or Stone Cold Steve Austin
The best thing about that Rocky/Sultan Wrestlemania match is an inebriated Honky Tonk Man on commentary.
"Get him Sheik!! STRETCH HIM! TEAR HIS CLOTHES OFF!!!"
You forgot to mention while he was in the USWA, became good friends with Brian Christopher (Grand Master Sexay). When Brian died, The Rock paid a touching tribute to his friend.
It's literally a mirror image of Jerichos story in WCW only done right. As a WCW fan the Jericho thing still hurts me when he left I knew WCW were in trouble.
Every time you quote him with "the Rock says (insert quote)" I can't help but laugh.
Part of greatness is referring to yourself in third person
Any chance we can get a Life and Career of Captain Lou Albano?
i love these, alot of these videos piece together where i was in my childhood
Its crazy to see how far he has come from his Rocky Maivia days
Best promos ever after the Nature Boy
Great video man. Always able to get lost in your videos and just relax for a little thank you for that, happy see you made the rocky in the nation video already too!
dude i love your vids!! keep em coming
Great content as usual and impressed with your output. Keep up the good work!
Still got my rookie year Rocky Maivia action figure. Looks nothing like him!
The only rock I never got
Lol does it have the striped green and brown vest thingy?
@@joshuawhite8247 nope. He's wearing the light blue trunks and white shoes.
@@nichelleharris7496 o that's not the standard regulation rocky maivia action figure then. Sorry man
Joshua White I have the one that was made by Jakks in 1997. I wasn’t referring to the Mattel one.
His first televised USWA match as Flex Kavana was in a tag match. His partner was Brian Christopher and their opponents were two legends by the names of Bill Dundee and Jerry Lawler.
Joining the nation saved his career. Who know what would've of happen if he hadn't.
People who say he was born into it but I am sure the bootcamp with his father was not a cakewalk. He did everything in his power to prove his mettle. Great sportsman and also a great MC skillstoo
I think the next video regarding The Rock should cover his first heel run, leading up to the match at Summerslam 1998. That match is pretty interesting as Rock was actually getting cheers with the crowd, even though he was a heel. Triple H won the belt, but The Rock had won the crowd.
***PFFT*** This guy will never go ANYWHERE.
Can’t wait for Rock Nation era video
Captain Solo facts
Absolutely love your channel 👍🏻
You’re doing wonderful work man,, thanks so much for making such great content!
Awesome man congrats on passing 100k fully deserved
Great job on these videos 👍.
One question,is this the former 'Fit Finley?
Your videos get better and better. I watched the NoD video when you posted it, but now I can't wait for another one that focuses on The Rock.
what's that you say...a video on Dangerous Danny Davis... sounds amazing
Love the “rock said” parts you included in the bio. 👍
Please tell me there will be a rock and sock connection bio
Oh man, I was teenager back then. I live in NC and was super interested in wrestling and we actually got USWA on TV so when I saw him I was like that's Flex Kavana. lol
Great episode as usual, boss!
“The rock will be whipping your money ass all over the arena. From the Spanish announce table, the French announce table, Ho Ching Ming Chow Chinese Announce table!”
The attitude era was incredible. If you cut a promo like that today you be called a racist, canceled on Twitter and fired from the company 😕
hard to believe that it ron Simmons to put rock over shows how great Simmons was and how underrated he was and still is to this day
I grew up as a kid watching Hulk Hogan wrestling and also doing movies. Then time passed and had the oportunity to watch the Great One, The most electrifying man un sports smackingdown the competition and making movies.
The Rock is my all time favorite wrestler and actor.
Definitely going to check out the website. Keep up the great videos.
You do fantastic work. Thank you for all you do.
Damn sunny was hot back then
Absolutely, she was the most viewed woman at that time on the internet. Even more than Pamela Anderson. She was extremely yummy at that time.
I love how he remixes every theme song fr
Appreciate you doing a video on my favorite wrestler of all time! And the goat The Rock!
Intro is amazing. You are great at this. Keep it up
nice video
Great video! Really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work.
Jim Ross is the reason Rock turned heel the 1st time pretty much he told him to
You smell what the rock is cooking ?!
I remember 1st time saw rocky I knew he become superstar lot my friends in school at time told me he was going be nothing guess what my friends y'all was wrong 😆 I was right
My best friend had told me back then even before Rocky joined the Nation Of Domination that he was going to be a massive huge star one day. I of course laughed at that time and just a few years later he ended up being a huge massive star. I am glad that I was wrong because he ended up being one of the most entertaining wrestlers ever in the whole wrestling industry.
2:56
I remember watching an ESPN documentary on the 'Canes and being surprised to see Dwayne in video footage.
Highly anticipated bio!
Thank you for sharing brother
Been waiting on this one thank you
"If anything happens to the channel"
Are you planning something? ^^
He may be implying that WWE may come after him like it has Wrestling With Wregret and others
Another great video, keep up the great work 🙂
Keep the content coming. Quality stuff.
It wasn't injuries that cost him his starting spot at Miami, it was Warren Sapp.
I Love seeing your Channel grow
I hope THE ROCK'S DAUGHTER SIMONE HAS A GREAT CAREER. SHE IS ALREADY A TARGET JUST BECAUSE OF HER FAMILY. SHE WILL DO GREAT.
💯
Love all your videos!!!
The Great One
Please include the fanny pack picture
Edit: Aw man
Congrats on the site!
Thank you for covering my debut I appreciate it.
At 13:36 The Rock looks Cocky and Badass right there looking at Faarooq when he was joining His team
We want Virgil
You are the kind of person, I'd love to go for a beer with and just chat wrestling, you my friend, are an amazing person
Hopefully your next video in this series will be more than a word for word recap of The Rock’s WWE documentary dvd.
When you miss saying "Rocky sucks" in the early days 😂
By late 1997 The IC Champ, The People’s Champ Rocky Maivia “The Rock” was on his way. His matches around that time with the likes of Stone Cold, Undertaker, Ken Shamrock were great . Royal Rumble ‘98 And WM 14 Another Great Example. From then On Nation Leader ... REST IS HISTORY! .
Everyone of these will gets a like and comment bout how awesome these vids are 🤘😎
14:46 The whole "happy to be here" thing is a problem with a lot of WWE wrestlers now both in and out of character. In character a lot of WWE faces have this naive gullible "Whether I win or lose I'm just happy to perform for all of you" thing going. And in real life some of the younger wrestlers let management walk all over them because of their childhood nostalgia for the company and accept the stupidest gimmicks and storylines and let themselves be manipulated into believing it's theirs or the fans fault when they fail when it's WWE's fault.
If you smell what Wrestling Bios is cookin 💨💨 👃🏻
Rock " The Dwayne" Johnson
Great content as usual
