Working to overcome an eating disorder? Have you tried Intuitive Eating as part of your recovery? ❤️ Please note that I am unable to provide clinical recommendations in the comment section. I'm happy to provide a space to share the challenges and triumphs of eating disorder recovery here.
I'm definitely an emotional eater. Sad, eat. Happy eat, not hungry, eat, but more than likely thirty.... Eat. It definitely takes time and patience start having a healthy mind set around food. I'm still working on it. Thanks for sharing 👍
I love the characteristic of eating for physical reasons rather than emotional reasons. When you take the emotions out of eating you know that you are eating to nourish your body rather than fill a void
After recovering from the worst of my disordered eating when I was in high school, it still has been difficult to get past ~those days~ that come up. I haven’t thought about listening to my body’s functions instead of what everyone else says is normal or proper for eating habits. I’ll give this a shot. Thank you.
I found that my disordered eating was connected to past trauma. Once I healed/processed this, the disordered everything recorrected itself. Great video full of practical guidance.
This was truly wonderful Meredith and I can certainly relate to everything you've said. I came across intuitive eating a couple of years ago on you tube but of course I kept going back to what I knew (Chronic dieting with weight fluctuating all my life since puberty) as I felt extremely anxious not having that control. It was and has been a continuous cycle for 30 years now at least. Yes I finally realise and understand I am an emotional eater. I've listened to a couple of your other videos in my car so I couldn't make comments but I will go through them again so I can. I just wanted to share that I am an ethical vegan and have been for a long time so some foods do have a moral value to me (animal foods). But for me it is so easy to not eat animals or their biproducts (milk, cheese eggs etc) . Never been a problem or a temptation. I only wish that I could feel about other highly palatable foods which have always been extremely addictive like flour foods mainly for me. On my recovery journey I have been moving towards Intuitive eating and introducing the principles more as I experiment and really pay attention. I now naturally want to eat whole plant foods instead of anything processed (gentle nutrition). The reason for this is because I developed a gut problem (long story and complicated) but this started me on a journey of discovering and learning about the microbiome and the connection with the brain. Science is now starting to understand the significant impact these microorganisms have on our brain also and how they play a pivotal role in our food addictions which contribute to disordered eating. I am ready to hear your explanations of the intuitive eating principles. I know I am ready. If you are interested in the micobiome a good place to start is to research Dr Will Bulsiewicz's work (its all connected!) He will give you a great understanding how our microbiome influences our choices of foods and why we crave what we do. It will blow your mind. Thank you again and I am so looking forward to taking notes of all your videos and helping me further apply these principles (finally!!) to my life. ❤❤😊😊💖💖
Thank you for your comment Skye! Your journey sounds like a genuine, gradual experience of understanding yourself and your relationship with food. Trying to explain intuitive eating for RUclips (short, simple format) is so tough and you make some great points. Stating that there’s no moral value of foods is really aimed at helping people recognize that on a deeper level diet culture has them believing that they’ve done something wrong for eating something less nutritious. Veganism for ethical reasons is a different ball game. I still wouldn’t want someone to beat themselves up about what they eat, but consciousness of the life of animals is a lot different than internalizing diet culture because someone is getting rich off you hating yourself. I’m also interested in the gut’s microbiome and will check out this reference. I only started my own research in this area a few years ago. For the benefit of intuitive eating, I wonder if there’s a way of following the path of gentle nutrition and making educated food decisions out of love and respect for your body, rather than where others might take a more orthorexic approach with this information.
@@ParallelWellness Thanks for replying so quickly Meredith. I’m in Australia so I wasn’t expecting one so soon :) I certainly hear everything you’ve said and I don’t doubt that it is hard to explain Intuitive Eating on RUclips. I know what you mean about beating yourself up for eating less nutritious food. I feel for me I do that even more because I feel I have less of an excuse being a vegan as I feel I should be eating clean, organic, whole foods plants and not all the Available processed vegan foods there are now. Yes I agree consciousnesses of animals is certainly different to internalising diet culture, which I’ve been a victim of most of my life. I never considered myself having/developing orthorexia but thanks for making me aware of it and yes I can understand how the moral food issue and understanding the micro biome could contribute to this. It’s complicated that’s for sure.. but I do believe it’s important for us to know the connection as we are more microbes than human! Fascinating! . It just makes a whole lot of sense. Thanks again Meredith ☺️🌱🌻🐾
I deal with disordered eating, it's been a while I have chosen to eat with intuitive eating. Today I mastered it! I ate pancake, veggies, had some fun times: I am happier with my body, my hunger... It's been amazing!
Meredith -- you have it figured out. I've had binge eating disorder my whole life and have sought help in all aspects of the disorder, and you have hit the nail on the head. You really get it from all angles. Thank you for sharing these videos. They are incredibly helpful
My therapist said I had an eating disorder even though I don't exhibit bulimia nor a.n. It took me years to accept his diagnosis but there is a neurosis for sure. Always a work in motion!
Danielle, you speak to a good point. In my practice I believe strongly in developing a diagnosis with my client. It's important for a client to fully understand the diagnosis. Eating disorders and disordered eating exists on a continuum, so you may not meet all criteria for a clinical eating disorder, but may still experience difficult symptoms.
Girl, don't get me started on the problems with diets :) as you know... This was a great summary about intuitive eating and lots of great info about it. I know when I first heard it I was like "how is this actually gonna work". But it does!! Takes time.
Being aware of what is happening and making mental or physical notes of what types of food, how regularly you eat those foods, and the quantity of those foods can help towards overcoming eating disorders. Most people, unfortunately, don't have the self-discipline to recognise they have an eating disorder, and if they do, they don't have the desire to make those necessary changes. Great video.
Thanks for making these videos. I suffer from a burnout because of depression so I have very little energy and I want to overcome my fear of food because I believe that not being afraid of eating more than my specific meals will help me feel better in all sorts of ways and get my out of this exhaustion. I recognize the thing about avoiding things that you love doing. Some things I love doing include a slight physical activity. not alot but just a little and it makes me more hungry than normal but I'm so afraid of eating one more meal than I usually do on days when I dont do this activity, so I sometimes avoid those acitivities, which only makes me sad
I’m so glad I’ve found you! I’m subscribed to your website and also following you on IG and here of course. I am a 48 year old woman from Ontario Canada. I have BED and lost 135 pounds counting calories. The past year I have rapidly gained likely 80 pounds. I’ve been trying to find local help with my disorder and they look at me like I have two heads. I’m struggling to much and someone mentioned I look into intuitive eating so here I am. Praying I find some help and answers.

Glad I found ur channel, my twin and I got affected by the diet culture and we're trying to go back to eating normally. Got a question though, how often would u say is best for those who have disordered eating to challenge their fear food/food labeled special in say a month? Should it be once a week or whenever they're ready? In my case, I'd like to think of it as, after having a "special food", the day after ill just eat something I'm used to, eating clean food. Not necessarily cutting out the calories but just eat a normal balanced meal. Do u think that's how intuitive eating supposed to be? (sorry for bad English :3)
I am struggling with an Ed (anorexia).. I am stuck in the cycle and still counting calories, but I would like to start once and for all intuitive eating. I should start gradually not to count calories or suddenly don’t calculate anything ?? I am so tired of the whole situation and afraid of letting myself ‘free’ finally without restriction/control
@leia i feel definitely better. Sometimes the urge to count calories is strong, to have food under control… but gaining weight helped me and I am less stressed. I’ve understood that my body has nothing to do with my soul and my personality/mindset. People around me love me indipendently. Once I realized this, I had no more fear of letting myself go. Only in this way you can fight extreme hunger. No restrinction and no count of calories. I know it’s hard but only the beginning will be tough. ❤️ then the process will be ‘natural’
@leia i felt very lonely and as noone could really help me… the most awful experience of my life. I’m just 21 but I’m sure my body will always remember all the pain… but there is always a way of escaping this pain. We don’t deserve this. We should think about our happiness. I’ve learnt to appreciate every moment of my daily life. Wish you will be better too. If you need someone to talk i’m here, do not hesitate!
Great video. Thanks for a little tip though. You talk way too fast in many of your videos and it comes across sometimes like you are spouting out information and facts. Doesn’t seem like you are connecting as well to the viewer that way and it’s hard to keep up or process anything you’re talking about. Maybe you can slow down a little bit in your videos and be more topic centered going deep into one topic at a deeper level instead of rapid pace facts. It feels a little bit like an infomercial. Thanks again.
Can you do me a favor and listen to your voice in this video and compare it to yuor newer videos with the "youtube infelction". I like this much much better... I realize there is so much advice out there about how to attract more viewers but that almost becomes it's own type of orthorexia as youtubers completely change everything about their channel to fir certain molds that have been decided to be "the right way".
I appreciate your feedback, yet I can say these videos were made back to back over a few months in 2020. Definitely not trying to “put on” a voice, just maybe feeling more confident about talk to myself alone in a room.

Thank you so much for sharing Serena! It's natural to link food and eating to our emotions.Glad to hear you're practicing patience with yourself.
I love the characteristic of eating for physical reasons rather than emotional reasons. When you take the emotions out of eating you know that you are eating to nourish your body rather than fill a void
Exactly! It's a huge mindset shift that takes time, but it's totally worth it!

great stuff! eating for physical fitness and health rather than emotion
I know so many women who have gone through this and I think it is wonderful that you are helping with this, Thanks so much for the value!
Thank you so much for watching, and for your kind words Laura!

Yes! Addressing past traumas is such an important part of overcoming disordered eating.

Such an important topic. Raising two girls, I think about this all the time.
Yes! Raising children to maintain their intuitive eating skills is so important. I'll be doing a video on this in the future.
My therapist said I had an eating disorder even though I don't exhibit bulimia nor a.n. It took me years to accept his diagnosis but there is a neurosis for sure. Always a work in motion!

Thank you Olivia!❤️

Thank you Olympia!
Can't wait to try intuitive eating! Thanks for sharing Meredith!
Would love to hear about your experiences!
Never heard of intuitive eating -- thanks so much for explaining!
Glad to bring it to your awareness!
Girl, don't get me started on the problems with diets :) as you know... This was a great summary about intuitive eating and lots of great info about it. I know when I first heard it I was like "how is this actually gonna work". But it does!! Takes time.
Yes Debbie! When we've lived a life believing that diets are the only way, it's hard to wrap your head around.
I love your intuitive eating guidance and interoceptive awareness. As an intuitive healer, this makes so much sense to me. Fantastic video!!
Glad this had some overlap into your work that made it resonate!
THIS is SO VALUABLE! I’m saving this for future reference!! Thank you for this!!
Glad it was helpful! Let me know if you'd like a video on a specific topic!
Thank you for sharing this! This is very helpful for those who wants to overcome their eating disorder.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I am super interested in this but I do need to lose nearly 100 pounds…I’m going to dive into more of your videos and see what I can learn! Thank you!
This is important help. Emotional groundedness is so useful here.
So true Stephen! So often we avoid our feelings which prevents us from being grounded in the emotions and what they're trying to tell us.

I love this topic thank you so much for sharing! Looking forward to more.
Thank you Kandi! I'll be posting more about Intuitive Eating over the next few weeks!
Great video Meredith! I've seen a lot of people have success with intuitive eating. :)
Thanks Tanya! It can be a longer journey than many people expect based on past dieting experience, but I believe it's so with for many people.
Meredith, thank you so much - this is such an important video! I love your channel and appreciate you! I just subscribed! ✨💛💫
