This song is more folk than country. Easy to miss the difference if you don't listen to the genres much. This guy is a real one, too. He made a post about how he's been flooded with offers from record labels and turned down an $8 million deal because he doesn't want tour buses or jets or to play sold-out stadiums. He wrote this music to help him cope with his mental issues and addiction and that's all. He's played a couple of gigs in NC and they've been huge crowds. He's a humble guy, that's for sure.

It kicks down on poor people, it promotes the baseless claim that all liberals are pedophiles, how is that not divisive or a political hand grenade? Why do you think one party glommed onto the song so quickly and tried to make it their anthem. So much so, Oliver himself condemned them for using it at the debates the other night. If it's truly a song about the working class, it shouldn't kick down on poor folks from the working class, it should promote unity, hell, maybe even unions. He tells the facts, doesn't sugar coat anything, says what everyone else is thinking, yet his delivery is soulful, and you can actually feel his emotions thru the music. And the fact that hes turned down record deals just shows hes really about just sending and spreading the message with no other intentions other than to bring people together. For those that dont know, the type of guitar Oliver is playing is called a Dobro. It is kind of like combining a acustic guitar with a banjo. My grandfather played one, as well as a steel guitar, they looked like a table top guitar with foot pedals and a metal slider that was used to get that 'twang' reverb in older country songs. I miss him terribly, and I know this song would have brought a tear to his eye. He was NOT a religious man, he used to say "I leave that saving our soul stuff to the missus, but good God I hate politicians! They dont give a $#!T about us until its time to vote!" Oliver is spitting straight truth here. The rich men north of Richmond do NOT care about us, that is why they constantly increase the cost of goods, move jobs away, and refuse to raise wages....all in the name of profit, damn the consequences.

    Yes!! 🇺🇸💸🙌🏼
I live on an Indiana farm surrounded by popcorn and soybean fields. I’m a country music fan, always have been, but I’ll listen to anything if it grabs my attention. This isn’t a country song though- it’s a song for our country. I’ve never heard something so meaningful, anything so powerful or anyone pour their heart and soul out like this man has. This video is an actual blue collar worker who shows his real, raw emotions and he’s fed up. He’s done with the bullshit that we all see but no one has the balls to say. I’ve dealt with my fair share of depression/anxiety and other issues so I can completely relate to his emotional suffering. Turning down an initial $8M in offers from record labels, he just wants to convey his message- he is spittin facts and this… THIS is “woke” talk, an actual great awakening. He opens his small town performances with verses from the Bible, everyone is listening and it’s such a crazy, beautiful thing. He’s the exact light that this dark world needs and it holds a glimmer of hope. I pray that this changes us in a positive way and helps us ALL come together as one; no matter your ethnicity, religion, social status, age, gender- the list goes on. The man has such amazing vocals, what a damn powerful 3 minutes.

Great reaction! I don't regularly listen to country music either, but this song was so powerful. You can tell in his voice that he's feeling this for real, it's his honest lived emotions. Anybody with a pulse, song is gonna resonate. "Rich Men North of Richmond" refers to the Washington D.C. politicians/elites about 3 hours north of Richmond Virginia. Dude is the genuine ish, as evidenced by a a letter he wrote to people explaining his who/what/where/when's (ruclips.net/video/h3tQ5Pz0fUI/видео.html) Thanks! #OliverAnthonyMusic

Country has a few different sub genres associated within it. We have Nashville pop country (Morgan wallen), traditional country (Chris Stapleton), and Appalachian country (Tyler Childers and Oliver Anthony)
My personal favorite is Appalachian country because it still feels unadulterated and free from corporate control and pressure.
Obviously a lot more nuance but this is the 50,000 ft overview.

He seems to be the real deal scoffing at record label contracts and trying to make it off Spotify, You Tube and social media which is a considerable sum.
