You have to check out “ESTRANGED”. It is probably the most complete song by them in my opinion. It’s like a movie. Different sections, parts, and layers in the song. Axl sounds good, Slash kills it, the piano is amazing! Just PERFECT Edit: The music video is a must!! We all look forward to seeing your reaction!
Yes! It would be really cool to hear her take on a song from the same album where his voice sounds much softer. Also Estranged is just the best song ever.
When she mentioned slash’s guitar tone I instantly thought of this song. The way he uses is rhythm pickup with the tone turned down is one of the most interesting sounds I’ve ever heard. But the piano is just phenomenal
That “synth” sound that gave you the chills was Axl’s screech/whine/cry. It’s a thing he does. You can hear him do something similar in “Welcome to the Jungle”
Fun fact, the guitar Slash is playing in the video belonged to Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who sold it after leaving the band in '79. For a while after finding out Slash had acquired it, Joe kept trying to buy it back, which strained their friendship a bit. Eventually, Slash returned it as a birthday present on Joe's 50th.
Another fun fact: If I remember correctly, this was the most expensive music video ever produced at the time. I could be wrong, so don't quote me but think that's right.
You are probably the most facially animated and expressive voice analyst I've yet seen on youtube. -- It's almost compulsive viewing to watch you react the way you do to these vocal performances. And that, in itself, is a big plus point for your content on this channel.
That last solo, with the buildup, is by far one of my favourite musical moments of any song. If a guitar could cry, that's the sound it would make when mourning.
Yup... pretty sure Liz shares my appraisal of GnR. Very nice of her to remark "I love the tone... of the guitar". That's pretty much sums up my view. I thought Axl sounded cool when GnR first hit the scene back in the 1980's. Then I saw them live. Total train wreck.
The video is based on a short story from a friend of the band named Del James. The story is called Without You. The video is part of a three video trilogy starting with Don’t Cry, November Rain and finishing in Estranged - the two songs additionally mentioned would be worth your time to analyze!
These trio of songs make up the full story. "Don't Cry" was the initial breakup...."November Rain" was a dream of what could have been if she didn't commit suicide...and "Estranged" is him dealing with the emotions afterwards. Long time Guns fan here... Hope this helps. Estranged is my favorite, you should check out the whole story!
Long time fan and didn’t know it was a trio knew don’t cry was the first but didn’t know that estranged was the conclusion thank you for that I learned something new today
This. Add Coma to that story as well. 14 Years is also about this. I think the real love story in all these songs is not Axl and Stephanie but Axl, Duff, and Slash.
Watching Elizabeth fall in love with Slash's playing is glorious. There is a reason he's one of the most beloved guitarists of all time. God knows he's my all-time favorite, and its not a close race.
Same here. He's not the most technically proficient when compared to the likes of Rhodes or Petrucci or Van Halen, but he's got such a melodic feel that pulls at your strings. He inspired me to start playing.
Ah, just to say, the 'synth jet sound' was actually Axl, as were all the layered voices, right down to the very low baritone. He used to have an amazing range!
Elizabeth.. “Patience” is a acoustic song by Guns and Roses and I think His voice sounds it’s absolute best! It’s sounds natural and not strained at all.. You would be surprised to hear Him using that Lower Vocal Tone!
My first girlfriend and I. "Patience" was our song. Ironically, one of the big reasons we broke up was that she wasn't willing to wait until I had a permanent job with health insurance before she got a ring. I got that about two years after we broke up.
@@ostlandr Yea Bro! Patience is a virtue! As they say.. But it wasn’t meant to be! In our youthful years.. We all lack patience.. But truly a wonderful song!
She ain't going further with GnR. She hates the guys voice (I don't blame her). She is trying to be polite about it. GnR is a great band, and Axl was perfect for it, but he was never a brilliant singer. Just a differnet singer. To a highly trained opera singer, a singer like Axl sounds like constant sibilant distortion in the background. To her, it's like watching a basketball game played with a football. I don't think she can take any more. Lol.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 No doubt.. She is the real deal.. Opera Singers are the best.. But She does Like Ronnie Jame Dio and appreciates His Vocal abilities!
Axl strained the hell out of his voice and had to undergo surgery to have his vocal polyps removed. There is a HUGE noticeable difference between his voice from Appetite for Destruction and their next album, Lies, which was released only a year later. His live performances were sometimes absolutely terrible, and I recall on one occasion the fans booed him and through stuff at him because his voice was breaking up so much. In spite of the surgery (possible multiple surgeries) his voice never really recovered.
It’s funny because 2006 was probably the best I’ve ever heard him through live performances. I still don’t understand how he sounded so good that year through videos like Welcome to the Jungle in Rock am Ring.
I’ve had that same surgery and you never really recover. Your vocal cords are easily sore and strained. Even the night air is a problem for my vocal cords.
Not surprising, as during concerts he really liked to scream every song at full blast with as much distortion in his voice he could manage. That's just murder on the vocal cords.
I find your comment hysterical. You are wrong. Appetite for destruction in all actuality is their 2nd album. Their first album was called "Live ?!☆@ like a Suicide" only 10,000 copies were released in cassette and vinyl format only in 1986. Only 4 songs were on it. Those songs were, "Reckless Life" "Nice Boys" "Move to the city" and "Mama Kin". Then came "Appetite for Destruction" in 1987. In 1988 "Lies" was released which had those same 4 songs plus "Patience" "Used to Love her" "You're Crazy" and "One in a Million". "Lies" is basically a re-release with 4 additional songs
@@problemadarisolvere, Coma is such a tough song, even for Axl in his prime, that I would have to say that if she chooses to analyze Coma, it would be best for her to use the album version, but that is just my opinion. Coma is one of my fav. songs (although it does not top November Rain, for me).
@@kerenolivero7097 for a first reaction, yeah, the studio version would be the right choice, you're right. I think one dedicated to the live version is totally needed, because that performance is just a must.
@@problemadarisolvere, I agree. I am a huge GnR fan, and I love the album versions, as well as the live versions (there is something special about live performances. for an older fan like me, the live performances are the best!), but I would never try to lure a non-fan into enjoying/ appreciating/ loving GnR by throwing them into the deep end of the pool (ie, live performances, which can be a bit rough, at times, lol) to begin with :)
Axl is a baritone naturally, going by his speaking voice. Songs like “It’s so Easy” or “Mr. Brownstone” showcases that range. The song “Patience” is a good example of Axl’s clean mellow vocals.
You WILL LOVE Estranged seriously november rain was on my top 3 until ive heard Estranged..on the same double album..one have November rain..the other Estranged.so...
On the radio version they would stop the sound before SLASH stands on the piano..the best part but i understand that song is too long for radio..just dont put it goddamit
@@Giveme1goodreason I've been gaining a new appreciation for Chinese Democracy lately, and yes, There Was A Time is an otherworldly vocal performance by Axl. One of my favorite songs from that often overlooked album.
I'm really happy to land on this video. This song has a soul in and of itself, and to see someone talk for half an hour with so much enthusiasm about something you love. I didn't even want you to agree/like every thing about the song, your vibe kept me locked in!
Seeing this video 1000 times as a teenager when it came out, at the point when Elizabeth said "this sounds a little more hopeful" and "I'm a sucker for optimistic music"... Oh man, I knew she was in for a shock in just a few more seconds into the song.
Every time she says his voice has aged a lot, I want to tell her, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." But she's definitely resistant to understanding that it's a sad song.
"Patience" is an absolutely gorgeous acoustic song by GNR that is so very different vocally for Axl, and his lower range comes out there. Their cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" is a lot of fun, too!
"Patience" is a beautiful song. So heartfelt, with such impressive vocals from Axl, I remember the first time I ever heard it, when it first came out on the radio, I couldn't believe it was really him singing.
The song "Estranged" really shows the maturity of Axl's writing and voice and is just as epic as this song, although not as iconic, but 100% worth checking out. More crazy Slash solo's also
My wife and I really enjoy watching your program. You are so knowledgeable and have such a great understanding of how sounds are generated in the body. Above all that we just think you’re absolutely adorable. Inside and out.
I was at the video recording as part of the crowd. We were there from 7 to 4am reacting to them play this song over and over and I can tell you the orchestra was live and it was a surreal experience being part of this video. It was so loud the paint was peeling from the ceiling snowing down on us while they played. The end result sounds exactly like the studio version.
If I remember correctly, the bride "unalived" herself. That's why there is a mirror in the coffin, making one side of her face. It was, as I was told at the time, an old mortician trick to conceal self-inflicted injuries.
I listened to this song a lot after my fiance committed suicide. It knew my heart ache. I'll never be over it fully because I really loved her, but music has always been the vessel for my pain. She's was a pretty special lady and songs like this got me through.
Sorry about your loss brother. I lost a child and I don't think I will ever get over it. She was born at 25 weeks and weighed 1 pound 8.5 ounces. She lives for 6 days and she died in the palm of my hand. The doctors said once disconnected from the machines that were keeping her alive she would not have much time longer to live. I held her in my hands and looked at her and was trying my hardest to give her my life energy. I wanted her to have it so bad that I thought I could force the life out of my body and into hers. I felt powerless. I felt like a failure. I couldn't protect my little Angel. Music also help me get through this and most importantly she had a twin sister that survived. They were identical twins. So as I watched my daughter grow, I would always know what Angel would have looked like.
For real! I was transported back to my youth when I was first falling in love with Slash. It's fun to experience that vicariously through someone else!
I don't think she has ever heard a sibilant sound of that magnitude come from a human being before. Lol. I love GnR, but please don't subject a trained opera singer to more of that voice. It's like torture for her to hear it.
I would love to see Elizabeth add an extra to the end of this review once she finds out the wail that gave her shivers and all of the layering vocals were all actually done by Axl himself. His range when he was in his prime and the sounds he could create with his voice were truly astonishing. You really pick them up when listening to these songs through headphones like most of us did back in the 80's. It's such a shame his vocal chords eventually got damaged and he is not the same now...
@@meganega123 Why? It's not like that stuff is normally taught. And also she's not familiar with GNR. Have you actually seen this lady sing? She's incredibly talented so I don't think her expertise is something to question here
So unless I am mistaken, that "synth" sound that you heard in the outro solo is actually Axl singing a very raspy, drawn out "eeeoowwww" but it is fairly deep in the mix and harder to pick out. This song is so epic; trying to learn Slash's solos is insane
Indeed. If I'm not mistaken, the thing he was going for was "anguished scream", which fits with the plot (Rockerboy has a happy-ish wedding with his love, but she dies tragically young)
No one does ballads like GnR. November rain, Estranged, Coma, Don’t cry… they still hold me captive and were revolutionary in my musical taste as a teenager.
I'm sorry but does no one remember this was a Video Trilogy? Don't Cry, then November Rain then Estranged. First two line up together really well, but the 3rd video is...eh
After 30 years, this song still never fails to give me chills. The video too is full of symbolism. It's true you don't see the bride die, but there's tons of symbolism of death. When the guy jumps through the cake, the bride and groom figures fall. The wine spilling like blood. I don't think there's any need to pretend Axl knows anything about good or healthy vocal technique. I've always understood that he had a very destructive vocal technique. I recall G'n'R having to cancel concerts because he ruined his voice again. I'm not at all surprised you think his voice aged a lot in a short time. They were a band that burned bright, and then burned out. Axl did, at least. The rest of the band tried to pick up the pieces without him at some point, but they could never become what they once were. And yes, Slash without his top hat is still Slash. Even if you can see his face! Just treasure that rare moment. But his brilliant guitar sound is unmistakably him.
Sadly, their real life relationship didn't have a happy ending either. Axle and Stephanie dated for about two years, were reportedly engaged. It all ended in lawsuits and allegations of theft and abuse.
She died from COVID in November. The November Rain came from the droplets that landed on her from a stranger in a store sneezing. Moral of the video? Wear a mask in November!!!!!!
As soon as this song started, I got chills all over my whole body. Keep in mind, I bought this CD in 1991 when I was 12 years old and I still get chills
Yep... My brothers and I waited in line at the Wherehouse and got both albums at midnight on the day they were released. Good times. They need to convince Izzy to come back and start releasing some new music.
Hello. Your channel got recommended to me by RUclips. Love your analysis. You are correct about the sound of the orchestra being synthesized. In 2022 in celebration of the anniversary of the album they remastered the track and re did the orchestra you can clearly hear the difference. This origianl version still sounds amazing to me though.
Axl made the string orchestration in 17 different synthesizers. It took him more than a half year. There is a new version out now with real orchestration.
@@LyricalDJ No no. Axl made it somehow. My brother used to do it to on an old Roland U20 (if I remember correctly) synthesizer. You can not sample something like this. I read it in Slash's autobiography.
First, that's absolutely Slash. This is probably his most iconic solo with regards to the music videos. This solo is indeed sweet, mellow, romantic, and that's for good reason. This section, very much suggested by Slash's stance while playing, is to invoke feelings of making love slowly, passionately. This song is sad, nostalgic even, and those are feelings intermixed with the love-making. Those of us who have endured troubled and ended relationships relate to such mixed, complicated feelings - feelings that are often impossible to articulate. Slash did so with a guitar.
The way you described Slash's playing was spot on. The tone and sophistication of the notes he chooses are what set him apart from so many hair metal guitarist that preceded him 👏
Yep, so many snobs often make fun or even dismiss Slash entirely as a good guitarist. And while he was never the best in terms of shredding. His compositions and the way he masterfully bends and takes advantage of different techniques to change how the guitar sounds, is what sets him apart. Slash's tone is not that complex, almost everyone could recreate the tone of the guitar, yet very few could make it sound like slash. Because the way he plays it is very unique. Sure he might never be the best guitarist ever, but how often he is dismissed just because he is popular really shows where most rock fans are, thinking that shredding is all there is to it. A lot of his solos have A LOT of nuance, and they are extremely hard to recreate. Sure most people can play the notes, but music is more than just playing the notes. How you play them is as important.
@@farrex0 Too many guitarists from this era have been dismissed. The guitar solo should always serve the song, not vice versa. BTW, Slash's hero was Joe Perry from Aerosmith, and there are similarities between the two.
Nobody can make a Gibson Les Paul sound like Slash... you're right, the tone he gets is like no other, he's such a great player... always sounds effortless, but impossible to replicate. To me, he's my favorite guitarist to hear do a solo. This one, and what he does in Estranged is just perfect.
This song and video came out about the same time that my fiance at the time died suddenly. Both this and "Don't Cry" have always felt so personal to me. The music, the wedding & funeral images, all of just spoke straight to me. Interesting how much she disliked the screaming sound Axl was making (she said chills, but not good chills), because that moment in the song was so cathartic for me - it sounded exactly like what I felt at that time. Listening and watching it so many years later, still brings up those emotions.
I love how optimistic you were throughout the song, while I was dying inside fully knowing what we'll happen in a couple of seconds. about Axl's low voice, you should really hear him speak in his natural voice. you'll be suprised when you hear how low his normal voice is.
This is actually part of a trilogy of songs (Estranged and Don't Cry are the other two parts). The lyrics and the videos of the trilogy are based on a short story by Del James called "Without You". Basically the story is about a band called Suicide Solution and their vocalist, Mayne Mann, who is of course supposed to be Axl Rose. Mayne has a girlfriend or wife, Elizabeth. So SS are on tour, and it's the last stop. A tour's last stop most often means one or both of two trends - first, that they end (and start) in their hometown; second, that it's the best show of the tour. Mayne wants to celebrate after the show with Elizabeth, but she's called out of town on business. Mayne's mad, so he picks up a groupie after the show, and they're hooking up in his hotel room. Matter of fact I think there are two girls, they're having a threesome. The drummer comes by, and Mayne offers him a girl; he turns him down. Then it turns out Elizabeth's trip was cancelled at the last moment. She finds out what room he's in, and goes there to surprise him. Mayne hears a knock, thinks his drummer is back, so he answers the door nude with a girl on each arm, nude as well. He's looking right at his wife, and she takes off. He gets dressed and gives chase. She loses him, gets home, and when he finds her, she's shot herself in the head. That is why only half of her face is shown during the funeral.
I had no idea about this, but then I was never a GnR fan. I thought in this story, she got sick and died unexpectedly of pneumonia or something, so their life together was basically cut short.
The change in song tone just due to Slash's 2nd guitar solo/riff is incredible. I love the first solo, but its the second one after the military drum part to lead into "don't you know that you need someone" is one of the most PERFECT transitions in a song EVER.
If you want to hear Axl's total range and what I feel is his best vocal performance, the soundtrack song for the Terminator movie "You Could Be Mine" is the most powerful vocal performance in my opinion. His range is so high. The studio definitely captured his vocal range.
Fun fact about Guns N Roses. When they released their first album Appetite For Destruction with "Sweet Child O Mine", "Welcome To The Jungle", and "Paradise City" it was initially a flop. MTV had blacklisted them because they felt the music was "dangerous" and "violent". It was about a year later and the record label was about to give up on the album and have GnR move on to their second album when Al Coury, the GM of Geffen Records called in a favor at MTV to get them to play "Welcome To The Jungle." MTV played it one time on a Sunday night/early morning at 4am. The next day MTV was inundated with so many requests to play the song that they no longer could ignore it and Guns N Roses became a literal overnight success. Appetite For Destruction has since been listed on multiple Best/Greatest/Top Albums of all time lists.
Welcome to the jungle was the first single released here in Europe in the summer of 87. I said to my friend this band is going to be huge. He laughed in my face and said yeah right. These guys are clowns and that song sucks.
I was 16 when Appetite For Destruction came out. I begged and convinced my older brother to buy the cassette for me. He did and said "Don't tell dad" because it had a warning label on it. I was obsessed with the album and to this day its a special one for me, no matter what naysayers will say.
I remember at the turn of the millennium MTV did a Top 100 songs in MTV history that was voted on by their viewers and the top 20 being mostly GnR and MJ with November Rain clinching the top spot ahead of Thriller.
So interesting to hear an expert break down the intricacies of Axels vocals. I never once out of a hundred times hearing this song thought about any of this. All I knew was what I was hearing made me feel a certain way and I liked the experience.
His tone is absolutely appealing and uniquely Slash. When he plays, you know it's him. No matter who he's playing with, you can always tell it's Slash. Not all guitarist can say that.
Am not saying that at all. There are many I can recognize in an instant that no one else sounds like. Eddie is one of them. I love Eddie!@@EdwardVGrimm
Slash is a phenomenal player, but let’s give a hand to the 59’ Gibson he is playing here. Without it, we would not have been blessed with its sweet tone.
This is the first time in 25 years that I have been able to listen to/watch this without crying. We buried my brother to this song, he was a massive Guns fan and the lyrics at the beginning kind of reflect his decline near the end: " We've been through this such a long long time just trying to ease the pain"
And like David Gilmore's dual solos for Comfortably Numb, Slash's dual solos for this song are absolute perfection. Melodic and powerful in equal measure.
I LOOOOVE how all focus went from Axl Rose singing to, " That's what his face looks like". ❤️💓❤️💓❤️💓 I can't even remember how young I was the first time that I ever got to hear this video, and I said the exact same thing! Find the biggest crush on slash because of how well he played the guitar and when I saw him come out and just start rocking with his hair blowing all over the place I was so amazed!! I bet that he tried to have the hat on to begin with but it probably wouldn't stay on because of the wind from I think the chopper right?
In Slash's auto-biography book, he stated that Axl programmed the string section in the studio version. So yes, those are not real string instruments heard in this studio track. She has a great ear to be able to detect that.
The whole time, I was waiting for her to realize this song was about loss of a spouse-she kept getting happier and happier about the song and I got more and more anxious knowing that the drop was waiting there at the end.
@@douglassnyder214 Indeed, he really puts deep anguish and pain into this scream, which is distinct but also seems to drown in the music at the same time.
I've only just recently discovered your channel. I love your reaction vids and in-depth descriptions of the vocalists' abilities! They give me fresh insight on ways I maybe could improve on my own skills (It's a little secret passion of mine, while I'm outwardly too embarrassed to sing in front of more than a select few - unless you feed me an untold amount of beer in me at a karaoke bar or private gathering of friends). While I'm not positive I'd ever get enough people to agree with me and help me encourage you to listen to it, I really think you'll love this one. Even as a teen in the 90's (that's right, late Gen-X'er here - born in 1980) I grew up listening to Metallica, connecting to the raw emotion and how I related it to my own life at the time. Due to this, I discovered Metallica's "Low Man's Lyric" very early in my life and even before I was old enough to have acquired much life experience, it - simply as a song - was something I quickly fell in love with. It's definitely underacknowledged, and in my opinion - underappreciated. While some of the lyrics are unmistakenly linked to addiction, I was still able to relate to the frustrations of trying to improve on my life while battling my own bad-tempered habits. It wasn't until later in my life that I was actually able to start understanding the actual message within it. I don't know if you've ever heard it before. If not (or even if you have), I'd love to see your reaction to the vocals and message combination. I truly think it's a great song and would be surprised if you were disappointed after hearing it. On a more recent personal note, while I'm far from a musian or singer, I take long drives as a part of my job and while driving alone for a couple hours at a time, I tend to "latch onto" certain songs and practice singing them aloud (anything from Garth Brooks to Uncle Lucius to Leonard Cohen to Darius Rucker to, well, Metallica!), focusing on exploring my own range and limitations, along with ways I can extend beyond my current vocal limitations. While I'm not afraid of adapting a song to fit my comfort range, I'm always aspiring to better match that of the original artist. Because of this time spent practicing, I've sort of bonded with this song (among many others) - even though I've never personally been addicted to any drugs heavier than a cup of black coffee (ok, I like the occassional beer too!). I'm mostly attached to the melody and am enthralled by the control that James Hetfield has, while managing to encapsulate such raw emotion behind his words. The vocals have proven difficult for me to recreate - but after countless rounds, I'm proud of my progress and very close! The only side-effect being that it's a real workout for my vocal chords, and the repetitive singing of it results in a couple days of a lower and slightly rougher speaking tone (I'm not sure it's a bad thing lol). Ok, testerone is kicking back in so I'm going to stop talking about me now! I seriously hope to see a video from you on Metallica's Low Man's Lyric sometime!!! Please, give it a listen! I don't know of any music videos that were made to accompany this song but for your convenience and further consideration, here's a link to a recording: ruclips.net/video/cdgVEb4xYBc/видео.html Songfacts "This song is not of typical Metallica fashion as it is far from their traditional thrash metal roots. It describes the thoughts of a drug addicted homeless man who is suffering through his life, wanting to get another chance." (www.songfacts.com/facts/metallica/low-mans-lyric).
Seeing her reaction at 36:21 for what's to come with Slash's solo brought me back to the feeling I had when I first listened to this song at 16. So great to see her appreciate songs from different genres with excitement and also technical knowledge is refreshing as hell. 👌🏼🔥
The twist in the feeling of this song is so often so easy to miss. It comes down to a couple very small words. "Nothing lasts forever in the cold November rain". "Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain". The song comes full circle in the end. Also, that "synth sound" is called Axls voice! And its supposed to make you shiver!
That guitar solo is incredible. Learning to play the notes is relatively easy but playing it with all the emotion and nuisances is difficult. Slash is able to make those notes speak to your soul.
This is the first time I ever clicked on the video of yours and so I feel like I just met you and so a minute 40 and you said my knowledge of Guns & Roses, one song and that thought put a pain in my chest.I have not felt in a long time.I feel for you..... It's like a sickness that you have to recover from... Sweet child of mine is the greatest song ever composed
Axl's voice is beautiful and devastating to me. There is no other voice like his, and his writing is awesome. The aging of his voice is sad to an extent but he blasted those vocals and gave it 3000 percent. His voice now is still beautiful and when I hear it I am devastated wrecked overwhelmed with emotion. His broken voice to me is angelic and beautiful. Thank you Axl! You are a rock God and irreplaceable! His November Rain at Lisa Marie Presley"s funeral is touching haunting and fills my heart so much that emotions pour out.
I think you can hear the age of his voice a lot more in songs where he has to like scream more, like I watched a video of his voice aging up to 2022 while singing Sweet Child O' Mine, and it certainly was different, but a couple years ago when he performed November Rain at Lisa Marie Presley's funeral it was beautiful, and not so far off from 1992 live imo
That might be one of the best descriptions of what is my favorite guitarist of all time. Just as much as I can sing alone with Axl word for word, I “sing” alone to Slash’s playing note for note on every song they’ve got. His playing draws you to want to emulate the guitar.
It’s the other way around with Slash. He’s not strictly playing guitar it’s more like he’s “singing” with it. It’s the difference between a good guitar player and one of the goats.
25:27 And that is why Slash is one of the all time greats. It warms my heart to hear someone who did not cut their musical teeth on rock recognize his particular skill on this. And your acknowledgement of this is why I fell in love with The Charismatic Voice!
The girls crush for Slash is common from back in the days of performing live with Axel specially for those ones who are hear him play his quitar solo for first time after the concerts were first among fans behind the scene to ask autographs.. some of them most pretty get away with fast stollen kisses ..
Great comment from her. She how she falls in love with the solo from the beginning. However, one correction. It’s not just a great solo that part is to me the best piece of music that will stay in my heart forever.
The sound you heard at the end that raised your hair was axel’s voice. He has a howl that you really only get from suffering and left pain. At the end end of the day he was a very broken person. For another example of his distinct howl, because I can’t recall anything else like it in rock music is a song off the same album called “ The Garden”. Again it’s towards the end of the song. Definitely worth a listen. Also probably explains the premature maturation of his vocal cords, because I don’t know that his technique live is the best for long term sustainability.
It broke my heart a little when she was talking about how optimistic & sweet it was. I wanted to give her a hug when she realized it was the bride's funeral 😭
Yep, not only just die, but the mirror in the chest sugests the other half of her face is Brown away (you can ses it here at 37:55) The build up was so fun to watch, about there must come a breakup, and the reaction did not disapoint 😂

I've always loved how Stephanie Seymour throws white flowers, which turn red, kind of symbolizing blood and death. As they lie on the casket, at the end, in the November Rain, they turn white again, gaining their purity back. To me, it's always symbolized healing after tragedy.
@@catw6998in the del James short story "without you" which the song is based on she commits suicide by shooting herself in the head that's why she has a mirrored shroud so no one sees the wound
I love this song so much, yes that’s Slash without his top hat. I always thought Slash’s guitar technique is so unique it is easy to identify his playing.
The ending of this song has to be one of the most intense mood changes in any song ever written. It is brilliant. I used to hate this song, but now the first 3/4s of it is just a glorious buildup for that hair raising finish. So good.
There are 2 points in the video that portray her death. The first was the spilled wine at the wedding and the 2nd(obviously ) the color running from the Rose on her casket. Slash's solos were so on point.still touches me to this day.
All the time Elizabeth was talking about weddings and relationships, I couldn't help thinking 'she hasn't seen the ending yet.' But that's what makes a genuine reaction video so absorbing. First time I heard it on radio I thought the station had tacked another song on the end in error, it's musically so different.
You can tell Slash takes a lot of inspiration from Brian May and David Gilmour. Melody over flash. Economy of notes. Perfect tone. Playing the exact right notes at the exact right time. Perfect use of space.
I saw GnR in Baltimore back in 2021. Slash didn't stop playing guitar for over 3 hours, and did a blues medley that was about 12 minutes long. He is an absolute BEAST, and I have seen greats like Dimebag and Zakk Wylde perform live.
Oh, Slash is such a friggin blast to watch live. I saw him in 2005 with Velvet Revolver. Spinning around hella fast in circles, spitting his cigarettes into the audience 😂. The sound is a given; you're always gonna get great music from him, but he's also such a fantastic entertainer.
Axl took vocal training from the legendary Elizabeth Sabine…. So did Ii. She was so in demand that she chose her students! She was classically trained but wanted to sing with extreme emotion- loud and heart palpitating! So she came up with a method that no one else taught. With her training singers were able to belt it out without causing nodes!! I became one of her teachers.. a total honor!
We were all mesmerized by Axl Rose when we first heard him back then because he had 3 or 4 different voices. At first we thought they were all different singers. That was definitely unique in the 80's.
Right!! We're talking the full on high scream voice of Welcome To The Jungle, the smooth low baritone of It's So Easy, the smooth slightly higher baritone of Patience, the mixture of smooth and harsh upper baritone of November Rain. and my favorite, the super high last 2 minutes of Rocket Queen, that set Axl apart from every other singer in history as the widest range of any singer. Is his scream voice my favorite? No. I personally love Kevin DuBrow's scream voice of Quiet Riot the best, but Axl gets it done, and done very well.
I always believed this song expresses the feelings you deal with after losing someone. It's a mix of remembering the good times, melancholy, guilt and internal conflict, anger and acceptance.
I'm not the biggest GNR fan out there, but I think this song was a masterpiece from a production standpoint. The production is flawless. I worked in a studio for a few years, and I can't pick out anything that I would change. I love it.
Yes, that is Slash without the hat. He has one of the nicest guitar sounds ever. His solos are very musical. Axl uses his voice in much more diverse ways on this album compared to earlier. I think the main characteristics in his main sound are that it's extremely thin and nasal. That creates the rawness more than throat rasp. But in this song especially he uses much softer tones too. He has definitely listened Nazareth's Dan McCafferty a lot, but has his own unique sound.
They have so many great songs she can react on them for weeks. But most are best at their live performance. Tribute to Freddie Mercury Patience at the video music awards Welcome to the jungle Paradise City Coma Civil war Estranged You could be mine Dead horse And on and on would be cool to have her listen to some Chinese democracy to see how he was in his forties. Theres so much to Guns that people dont realise. They were absolute songwriting geniuses! I was so looking forward to you listening to the outro its the whole band just throwing everything in theyve got. I first heard it when i was 13 and its still like a knife to the heart now!!
As has been commented already this is part of a trilogy of songs "Don't Cry" & "Estranged" being the other 2. "Estranged" is probably my favourite GnR song i especially love Slash's guitars on it. After you have familiarised yourself with Slash's playing he becomes instantly recognizable & you'd know him anywhere. The first time i heard Velvet Revolver's "Slither" on the radio before getting the cd i just went "That's Slash". Rick Beato is a great shout for anything music related.
I don’t think I have ever yelled for you to keep the song running more than I have for this reaction.😂 This song has to be an all time classic epic ballad. Covers all the highs and lows. I love all your reactions in this clip.
The video itself is Axl's dream of the memories of her...the best times and the worst outcome of what can happen to a deep love. This is probably why they don't show her actually dying and they only show the symbolism. We can assume that the actual moment was so traumatizing that he has blocked it from his memory. At least, that's my take on it. I remember when this video premiered on MTV for the very first time--it was amazing, and it still is.
Yea, thats my take. It starts out showing him drinking and taking pills and the video is him remembering the wedding and the funeral then the end it goes full circle back to the bed where the video started. Love the editing and how they didn't show how she died on purpose.
I've always assumed that not showing the death was simply a way to make the concept more universal and relatable. The point isn't how she died, but that she died too soon and he has to deal with it.
It’s based on a short story by Axl’s friend Del James. I think the story was called ‘Without you’ which is one of the lines in the song Estranged. Love all 3 songs in this trilogy, and their videos!
I will start by saying that I like early GnR. IMHO - What made them great was the song writing - lyrics, musicians as in the instrumentalists, and the high-octane energy. Axel wrote most of the songs (great lyricist), but that doesn’t make him a great singer, nor does it make him a healthy singer. I do not see why so many people criticize you about your critical review of Guns N’ Roses in the last video. I felt you were spot on… And I hope you continue to give honest assessments and not bend to the will of masses in your analysis and reviews otherwise they are pointless. Having an honest review of Axel’s performances does not diminish who the band was, what the band contributed and brought to the musical scene and they’re role the zeitgeist. Axel was a great lyricist. Sadly, he wasn’t the greatest singer and he sure didn’t take care of his voice… He was one psychologically messed up dude for a long time… That’s why he spent so many years in therapy. Axel wasn’t a perfect human being. He was, IMHO, a great lyricist who was able to tapped into the zeitgeist of the time.
It should be noted one of the reasons his voice evolved so much is that he took singing classes after they blew up. He put a lot of effort into being able to have that unique voice.
@@RafitoOoO They could have. I would have loved to seen it...Coma is my favorite GnR song. But I DO see the label's point...back then, GnR was the only band putting out million dollar videos, and they did front 3. At the time, I think most bands were only spending a few grand for each video.
You have to check out “ESTRANGED”. It is probably the most complete song by them in my opinion. It’s like a movie. Different sections, parts, and layers in the song. Axl sounds good, Slash kills it, the piano is amazing! Just PERFECT

@@nathanlandry1016 my favorite part is towards the end when Slash make the guitar sound like it’s crying. Gives me chills every time 🤘🏼
My default choice for name only 1 song to have with you on deserted island
That “synth” sound that gave you the chills was Axl’s screech/whine/cry. It’s a thing he does. You can hear him do something similar in “Welcome to the Jungle”
And the ending of the garden he does a very long one
Yup. Just Axl’s voice. No synth. She said, “They brought Axl’s voice back in.” His was the one anchoring that whole layering of voices the whole time.
And a lot in Knockin on heaven door !
He did it at the end of 'You Could Be Mine' too.
Yep, Axl all the way there. Not a synth.
Great story !
Another fun fact: If I remember correctly, this was the most expensive music video ever produced at the time. I could be wrong, so don't quote me but think that's right.
Michael Jackson and Madonna did the most expensive ones i think. Even GNR- Estranged topped Novembar rain a year later!
Listen to that iconic solo more than 1k times 😁
Didn't he originally sell it to Izzy Stradlin to pay for heroin since Izzy was his LA dealer in the mid 80s?
You are probably the most facially animated and expressive voice analyst I've yet seen on youtube. -- It's almost compulsive viewing to watch you react the way you do to these vocal performances. And that, in itself, is a big plus point for your content on this channel.
I find it really hard to watch the videos. I'm mesmerised by her energy and expressions!
I was going to comment the same
That last solo, with the buildup, is by far one of my favourite musical moments of any song. If a guitar could cry, that's the sound it would make when mourning.
Are you a Gary Moore fan? If ever a man could make a guitar cry……
Makes me break in tears every time. Add the lyrics to that... my heart breaks.
Definitely the best part of the song.
Yup... pretty sure Liz shares my appraisal of GnR. Very nice of her to remark "I love the tone... of the guitar". That's pretty much sums up my view. I thought Axl sounded cool when GnR first hit the scene back in the 1980's. Then I saw them live. Total train wreck.

There is no confirmation of what you said
Not surprising, as during concerts he really liked to scream every song at full blast with as much distortion in his voice he could manage.
The complexity of this song just amazes me. It's 9 minutes of musical odyssey, and Axl Rose really went above and beyond for this piece.

I assume you mean samples? Never heard he put over half a year into it. Impressive!
@@LyricalDJ No no. Axl made it somehow. My brother used to do it to on an old Roland U20 (if I remember correctly) synthesizer. You can not sample something like this. I read it in Slash's autobiography.
@@browncoat13 No. Read my comment above.
@@Morten_Nielsen1979 I looked it up and you are correct. I never realized that it was all samples so I deleted my original statement.
@@browncoat13Okay. 👍
Hey man....greetings from Germany...This is the BEST comment i ever read on RUclips......Thank you...!
@@farrex0I want to hear her review Slash's guitar on Anastasia with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. Also, Myle's vocals on it.
@@farrex0 Too many guitarists from this era have been dismissed.
The guitar solo should always serve the song, not vice versa.
BTW, Slash's hero was Joe Perry from Aerosmith, and there are similarities between the two.
@@kingrex1931 and the melodic genius that was Jeff Beck, was a hero to both Joe and Slash.
you can feel the blues in it....sets it apart every note is a choice... not just loud for the sake of loud
Kudos for the vocal coach/expert being polite and trying to take up for the "performance."
Yes ma’am, that is Slash. And the tone that you described as a jet flying over is actually Axel’s voice.
Slash es la genialidad de lo simple. Pocos llegan a eso.
Slash guitar solos ALWAYS give shivers. No matter how many times you listen to it...
Same!
That is some Friends meets GnR Illusion era fanfic right there!
OMG! 😮
The change in song tone just due to Slash's 2nd guitar solo/riff is incredible. I love the first solo, but its the second one after the military drum part to lead into "don't you know that you need someone" is one of the most PERFECT transitions in a song EVER.
The outro solo is actually the third; there’s a second solo one or two phrases after the first.
When the piano comes in again towards the end, it's just impossible to not get chills! So good
If you want to hear Axl's total range and what I feel is his best vocal performance, the soundtrack song for the Terminator movie "You Could Be Mine" is the most powerful vocal performance in my opinion. His range is so high. The studio definitely captured his vocal range.
My favourite Gnr song. Amazing driving tune.
Come with me if you want to live
He doesn't sing low on that song though, does he?
Maybe he does and i just need to listen to the entirity of it.
I always thought Estranged and You Could be Mine went well together on the album. Both completely different energy and both great songs.
If I'm not wrong Appetite For Destruction is still to this day the best first album in sales.
Karens are the worst in any era. They ruin everything.
Axl has always been an amazing composer. That final part, you hear Axl singing the backing vocals in 3 or 4 octaves
Agrree! There is no one like him!!
Agree, but I wouldn't say that he's the only one. Eddie Van Halen has that same affect. The MOMENT you hear it you know who it is.
@@EdwardVGrimm Yes, Eddie's definitely one of the few!
This is the first time in 25 years that I have been able to listen to/watch this without crying. We buried my brother to this song, he was a massive Guns fan and the lyrics at the beginning kind of reflect his decline near the end:
" We've been through this such a long long time just trying to ease the pain"
And like David Gilmore's dual solos for Comfortably Numb, Slash's dual solos for this song are absolute perfection. Melodic and powerful in equal measure.
There are three solos in this track. It’s indulgent, but it works!
And last year, they re-released the song and the video with a real orchestration replacing the samples, mixed by Steven Wilson.

I don't know of any music videos that were made to accompany this song but for your convenience and further consideration, here's a link to a recording: ruclips.net/video/cdgVEb4xYBc/видео.html

Yup, Axl wailing out in despair. Executed perfectly.
Except the lyrics never go "Nothing lasts forever in the cold November rain", anywhere in the song.
@@KraljOsovina Correct. Those lyrics are not in the song. Swing and a miss there.
That guitar solo is incredible. Learning to play the notes is relatively easy but playing it with all the emotion and nuisances is difficult. Slash is able to make those notes speak to your soul.

I agree :)
Axl ❤
He sounds like he is being choked.
You realize what a great soloist Slash is when it hits you that you can sing every one of his solos.
That's so true actually. Theyre all so distinctive yet all so clearly him that you can tell. I love Slash.
That, and watching someone's recorded reaction for the first time, which is absolutely appropriate for this solo.
There is a superb live version of this done at the MTV music video awards with Elton John playing piano with Axl. A must watch!😊

I saw GnR in Baltimore back in 2021. Slash didn't stop playing guitar for over 3 hours, and did a blues medley that was about 12 minutes long. He is an absolute BEAST, and I have seen greats like Dimebag and Zakk Wylde perform live.

I got to see them this year on the 15th of August so amazing and Slash played for over 3 hours and did a solo it was so damn awesome, best night ever.
This is the ONLY GNR song I ever liked, and I love love love this one. And the bride was his fiance at the time, 80s/90s supermodel Stephanie Seymour.
Oh wow , thanks for that info , I will look her up now !! also I would love a link to hear you singing , maybe?🙏🏻😁😏
We were all mesmerized by Axl Rose when we first heard him back then because he had 3 or 4 different voices. At first we thought they were all different singers. That was definitely unique in the 80's.
I tend to compare some of the different 'styles' used by Robert Plant through the years.
Yeah I feel like their cover of Knocking on Heaven's Door is a great showcase of his different voices.
Yes. Grief. Acceptance. Or at least realization of it.

I think the bottle following over and the wine spilling out might have been a metaphor for what happened to her.
This song is part of a trilogy, it starts with Don't Cry then into November Rain and Ends with Estranged. All amazing songs.
It was SUPPOSED to be FOUR parts, but the record company didn't want to shell out another million for a 'Coma" video.
@@Skulllywag which was total BS. Both albums debuted number 1 and 2 on billboard. They could've released it for sure.
@@RafitoOoO They could have. I would have loved to seen it...Coma is my favorite GnR song. But I DO see the label's point...back then, GnR was the only band putting out million dollar videos, and they did front 3. At the time, I think most bands were only spending a few grand for each video.
@@Skulllywagthat’s really disappointing 😢
@@SkulllywagThat’s because Coma is 9 hours long lol
November Rain is one of those songs that just really hits you in the feels, the lyrics, the song structure itself, it's just amazing ❤
Yes, the major church solo was Slash. He wasn’t wearing his hat because of the helicopter used to get the footage kept blowing it off etc
