what a Gongshow of a podcast, great job as always! 23-24 Ice horizontal design is a revamped version of the 96-97 Ice, which had all horizontal base cards. Troy hit it right on the head with the design, it's lazy that they kept the same image just zoomed in. On the original '97 version they have a different headshot.
Last year I pulled a Gretzky auto from SP legends. I love the card. And I know you guys love that set! The auto on the card is huge and takes up about 80% of the card. Century legends auto. Love the podcast! I think ranking the top autos would be a cool segment.
Hi guys. I was stunned to hear Connor Bedard will not have the Ice Premieres Auto Patch (#/10). However, the thought crossed my mind that Upper Deck may end up listing it as an 'update' for next year. Thus milking the hype and creating more incentive to buy the 2024-25 product. Do you believe this will become a trend with certain Bedard cards? For example, it wouldn't suprise me to see the Inscribed Future Watch not in this year's SPA and instead put in 2024-25 SPA (similar to Auston Matthews in 2017-18).
Fun video, the section on Gretzky was great. He used an autopen machine for years every time he'd have a request through the mail, so that adds even another layer to it all.
Great episode as always boys. Was thinking about the parallel junk era when you were discussing Ice. Obviously they are adding all these parallels because they want to sell more products, are able to sell more products now than before, and want to fill their products with value, right? A discussion topic for you guys in the future could be, what other ways could Upper Deck heighten the value of their products, other than adding a lot of parallels? My shallow thoughts on this without thinking on it too much is that they have to up the value of their boxes. Imagine if they had the same amount of hits, but produced 10x the amount of boxes. Most boxes would only have bases, that obviously doesnt work. They could add more new, cool sets instead of paralells, that would probably be optimal, but thats sounds like a looot more work for Upper Deck. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this, either as a talking point on the show or as part of the questions at the end of an episode. Gonna post this in the discord aswell.
Great episode guys! Did anyone check to see if Phil survived? I swear i saw a bear wearing a leafs jersey hiding in the bush behind his car. Phil, as a Jets fan i laughed so hard as i realized you and I were both staring at the US broadcast schedules on our phones with the same upclose ugly look on our faces lol. 0!!!!! 0!!!! Haha
Curt Keilback was the play by play announcer with Jets 1.0 I still hear him when Serge Savard would fake the slap shot at the blue line and do a back spin around the defender, Keilback would then say "Savard fakes the shot, Spin-o-rama!"
Kielback was the goat announcer...so many great memories of him calling Jets 1.0 games. Curious if you are confusing Serge Savard with Denis Savard who was the Savard that was known for the spinorama?
The Gretzky All Time FW will go down as Gretzkys most important / sought after solo auto, non mem card. It also has a much higher market than stated here on the podcast, there was a sale of one earlier in the year on COMC for $5000USD (approx $6850cad) and more recently $7550USD (approx $10,400cad). $10k for a single player, pretty reasonably numbered non memorabilia card of the GOAT is just crazy! This card is already higher than 99.9% of all Gretzky Auto Jerseys, and more expensive than the majority of Gretzky Auto Patches (including duals with Lemieux and many autos patches from The Cup)
Love the Gretzky All-Time FWA! I'm sure there's been sales for more, we just only quote public sales that are independently verifiable by Terapeak and/or Card Ladder etc.
Can't wait to see Phil's take and demeanor on the Leafs mount rushmore segment next week lol! Im sure it's going to be epic! As a Leafs fan myself I appreciate the ottawa senators...I appreciate the extra 2 home games we get per year with an honourable mention going to the Buffalo Sabres ! 😅😅😅 great show guys!
Great show! Wings have been my fave team for 40+ years...I picked the same 4 as your show...funny thing, I just bought a Lidstrom card off ebay yesterday 😅
My understanding about buybacks cards is that they are extra cards that ud had, they juste re-release it in another product. I really don't think collectors sent back those base cards to Upper Deck. And for me, i really prefer focusing on playing days auto cards because there are so few.
Appreciate you chiming in....yeah we need to understand buybacks better and are going to make a point to do that. I'm with you...love playing days autos.
Has Gretzky ever done signings at paid events? Or is he just exclusive to Upper Deck? Occasionally, you see his rookie card autos online graded that fetch a lot of money. He seems to sign a lot in public if you run into him, so that would be a cool way to have him sign a personal collection item.
what a Gongshow of a podcast, great job as always!

Great info on the 96-97 tie-in. Appreciate you chiming in!
Nothing better than waking up to a fresh pod from the gong show boys. Let’s go!!
Thank you...appreciate that so much Alex!

Wow...great pull! Cool segment idea too, we'll add it to the list.

Huh, hope that wouldn't be the reason if it happens but smart theory though.
Great show - loved the segment of Gretzky autos!
Thank you very much...we're happy you enjoyed!
Love seeing Loud Phil start show in daylight and end the show in darkness LOLLLL
it's a miracle this one got completed. Total Gongshow lol.
@@hockeycardsgongshow like always, a great listen/watch... thanks for the 2x weekly entertainment. CHEERS!
Fun video, the section on Gretzky was great. He used an autopen machine for years every time he'd have a request through the mail, so that adds even another layer to it all.
Great addition to the conversation....need to look more into that as we don't know much about it. Lots of layers :)
Josh, you made the right choice with Lidstrom! He’s the greatest DEFENSIVE defenseman of all time!!!
Glad you agree :)
Love the topic as I was actively wondering about which auto to get!
Happy we timed it right for you!
Great episode as always boys.

Great thoughts....yes it's good to think of solutions, not just point out issues. Challenge accepted!
Breakers are buying up so much product in The Top 3 sports, I'm sure that's taken into account of why there are sooo many products per year.

I (Josh) heard from him today. I told him last night if you're going to get eaten by a bear, make sure we're recording...for the ratings.
lol I made it out safely, for the most part lol

@@SportsCardsLive Nope, Serge Savard did the spin o Rama at the blue line, once a game it seemed...as a Jet, anyway.

Thank you....appreciate that! Glad we are aligned on the Wings :)
In regards to the cross-sports question. A Tkachuk/Taytum in the bus double champions auto would be a great chase card for a premium product
That would be amazing!
That’s as close to a master class on the Gretzky auto as anyone will ever do, Josh. Pin this episode…thanks boyz!
Appreciate that so much. Thank you.

Do we know if the numbering on a BuyBack was done by the Athlete whose auto appears?
We don't.....wish we did. My guess is not by the player but that's just a guess

Good question, not sure how many paid signings he does.
Gretzky Autos = Junk Wax in itself. Gretzky has been signing non stop since he retired. Probably 500+ autos per year for the last 25+ years.
There are a ton of autos yes, that's why we tried to make sense of sorting through the noise to find the right one that fits your personal criteria.
Yeah, his older autos are half what they used to be on ebay 5 years ago.
