I like the new interface, but I immediately noticed the lack of PDF preview. That's a major loss. Clarivate should bring it back.

After using X20 for 3 days, I changed it back to X9. I don’t think it’s wise to castrate the core functions like PDF Preview. On EndNote20, the size of the font is so big which accpies valuable screen space. I give 95 for X9 and give 20 for EndNote20. you can't imagine the next generation of iphone is worse than previous one. But Endnote Does!!!!!

Why can't we see the preview of the pdfs like in previous editions on the main reference database. The opening of the full screen pdf is a waste of time and more cumbersome. Hope you fix that. That was the main reason of using endnote versus other reference managers.

Thanks for sharing your feedback - The idea behind removing the PDF Preview panel is that it wasn't easy to read the article's text in such a small window. We could display other vital information using that screen real estate. The majority of our EndNote 20 focus group testers of both longtime and new users agreed with this approach. We can't guarantee what will change going forward, but we'll be sure to share your comment with the EndNote product team. For now, you may find the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+Alt+P to quickly launch an attached PDF to be a useful workaround solution.

@@EndNoteTraining If you have a secondary screen (as most of the researchers have) of at least 24 inches then this is not really true. The size is as big as in a normal screen zoomed out of that window. Also, we always had the option of expanding the pdf to a normal window. What I stress here is that we always had the option to do it in different ways, and this allowed a bigger range of options depending on the personal taste of your users. Now with this new interaction of EndNote you stripped us, the costumers of that option without clearly stated in your descriptions. I know a lot of people that would have not upgraded if they knew beforehand. In my case, it is prepaid from my institution so it is not a problematic issue. I just rolled back to the old version, however, I had to take the time and effort to do this. I think more options are always better than fewer options, and as new interaction, we should have more options and not less. Let your customers decide how to use it. You can still push the default view as you intended but at least leave the option to use it in a different way.

@@EndNoteTraining The main reason I want a preview is that I do not always know what paper I want to read, especially there are numerous papers by the sameauthor around the same year. Having the preview enabled me to see at a glance which paper I was interested in. The info shown in version 20 in the preview real estate of version 19 adds no value to me. I guess the summary shown is useful if you have block-downloaded papers en masse. My workflow is different. I search for papers online, read the abstracts provided by the search engine (e.g. google scholar) and then decide what papers I want to download. Once downloaded and in Endnote, there's no need to read a summary. I just want t be able to read the pdf.

Removing PDF preview in library view is counter productive. Including me, most researchers use wide screen monitors or dual or triple monitor set ups. One of the core reasons most of my research team shifted to endnote from Citavi was the ease of pdf review while writing papers.
Secondly, color scheme is not that good (purely subjective opinion). It would be good to have a neutral color scheme like X9 or have an option to change colors or so.

I strongly agree with his opinion.
PDF preview in library view should be the default must-have options in EndNote 20!!
I think this EndNote 20 version is the worst version ever.. it's getting worse in terms of features and design :(
I hope you come back like last year's version period.

No PDF preview like in older versions!!! Why??? This is obviously the biggest gripe as reflected in the comments below. Could it be that this is a consequence of now being able to attach non-PDF documents like MSWORD or MSExcel in version 20?

  • @arnulfmayer9051

Glad that I came here. Going to stick with X9 until everything is normal again. Can see no new function anyway (hardly a surprise, though). Taking out the pdf preview makes no sense. We use that to flip through dozens of papers as if they were printouts laying on the desk. I agree with the folks here that it is an essential feature. To actually read and annotate the pdf, I open it in Acrobat anyway. Notes and highlights also sync that way, no problem. The "screen real estate" argument is irrelevant to me as I use a 30 inch Monitor. I guess many others use big screens as well.

You used to be able to right click on a reference and get a "reference summary", which showed (among other things) which groups the reference belonged to. This option is no longer available. I used to use it frequently to check which groups I had classified a reference into. Can you bring this back?

    • @EndNoteTraining

Thanks so much for your post - we value all user feedback. What had been called Record Summary in EndNote X9 and earlier is now called Reference Summary and is found on the References drop-down menu. We streamlined the right-click contextual menu in EndNote 20, but I have shared your suggestion to add Reference Summary back to the right-click menu with the Product Team. I and others asked for changes over a year ago, and even though it is improve, theses=still need attention!
You cannot open windows, and especially you can’t open multiple windows simultaneously…necessary for editing between them. One user said it well: “2. Make it possible to have multiple references open at the same time. The loss of this option in EndNote20 has been almost devastating because I now spend way too much time and energy opening and closing references where I have notes that I need to access.”
The feature of “Search Results” has disappeared on EndNote 20.
One needs the option to build a search to select records based on empty field(s).
Hide/Show selected references is also gone,

I had to migrate from Mendeley to EndNote as Elsevier has been messing up with it badly. I am both pleased and shocked by the v20 update ---speaking for MacOS!!! (1) Importing a PDF file without drag&dropping is extremely cumbersome. (2) So is viewing the attached files ---I have to go through a couple of hoops every time just to read and annotate them. These features should not be a luxury anymore. The lack of these very essential features negatively impact our workflow.
Last but not least, please note that scholars of Humanities and Social Sciences use EndNote too whereas the design and the promotion of EndNote seem to be heavily biased towards disciplines in Natural & Medical Sciences. Once you attend to many issues related to this and the ones I mentioned above, I think EndNote will be the best academic tool(kit) for all of us.

Honestly, i think Endnote 20 is more like Endnote X9 Lite. In an attempt to make the program futuristic, they have missed out many key factors and details. One of which I would like to highlight is that there used to be a Go to MS Word dedicated button along with many others. They should just polish X9 version with a dark mode feature. This review is from a student perspective.

    Does EndNote 20 backward compatibility with EndNote < X9.3 or > X9.3?

    • @EndNoteTraining
      @EndNoteTraining  3 года назад

Hello, Minh: All older libraries are compatible with EndNote 20, though you'll need to walk through an automated conversion process for libraries from EndNote versions X9.2 or older. EndNote 20 libraries are backward compatible with EndNote X9.3. We'd recommend setting up the Sharing feature in EndNote desktop to share an EndNote X9.3 or higher library with an EndNote X8 user.
