Using steel siding to clad the container home proved to be a lot more of a challenge than we expected, especially on the longer pieces. We love how it looks like lumber, which softens up the exterior of the shipping containers, but still has the benefit of protection that containers are known for. Even Dumpy who has installed siding countless times before said he's not sure he'd work with it again...we'll let you know how we feel when we finish the rest of the walls!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This was such a MAJOR transformation that has been literally years in the making 😆...you might remember, the siding issue was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back last Fall. It feels incredible to not only being moving forward but to be having fun, learning, AND conquering fears while doing it...good things come to those who wait. Can't wait to hear what you all think of how the siding turned out...also, don't give Todd and smart ideas about the garage door or the deck, got it? 😂

The siding looks *so good*. You guys did a much better job of installation than the previous "professionals". As a side note, are there RUclips awards for production value and cinematography? If not, there should be and this channel would be at the top of the list. The photography, content, and editing are all top-notch.
There are awards from you tube for content and creation, however it is also governed by you tube regarding many issues, such as creativity, original content and indeed subscription.

Yes, Tyler, the metal siding does give the appearance of being made from wood. You, Todd, and Dumpy did a brilliant job with the preparation and the installation. I don't envy you the job of siding that tower... good grief, it's a tall one!

I can see why he wanted to power wash the retaining walls. I can't understand his love of virtual power washing. I've done power washing. I have to do it every year. It looks good when you're done but it isn't "fun".

Your projects are amazing but it's the relationship that outshines them all. Take time for each other no task is more important than moments' of staying in tune with each other. I offer my 67-year-old widowed opinion its going on seven years since my husband passed away and every day I still have a laugh or a cry about the house projects we took on and in the end how complete we would feel. The color contrast with black trim looks fantastic! It is off set by the lucious green trees and will be cool 😎 when the winter snow falls in choice locations. Recalling your comments, since the project started, the home is going to have wonderful views during all seasons. I know I've said it so many times, but considering both your flares for interior design, I can't wait for the interior design phase! I know the steel siding is a pain in the ass to work with, but it looks stunning and definitely looks like natural wood! I’m thinking you found the right guy to hire and help you with your container home. There’s a camaraderie, fun, mutual respect and appreciative vibe that I feel with the 3 of you. Glad you found him! I completely understand Todd’s need to power wash the retaining wall. I love doing projects like that! Even though it is a lot of hard work it is so satisfying to see the end result! It looks great! Tyler’s artist’s and naturalist’s eye are back with a blissful beauty and peaceful and graceful view. Todd is like the energizer bunny always going but he sees the outcome before he begins. Again, I’m so happy for you two. The best thing was to step away get that cabin and just be, not even a reset or recharge, just being. The joy I see on both your faces at The Land these last few weeks makes my heart full for you both. You are proof that challenges and set backs will always be there, but to get up face the next day with determination can overcome anything. It’s not the 1000 failures and knockdowns it’s the knowing when to step back a bit then getting up and saying I’m still here…that is when success and accomplishments happens.

Watching this video and the flow of your storytelling is so relaxing it has become therapeutic after all the nonsense going on in this world. A project of this size and not a cuss word or fit of anger but rather a calm no drama beautiful told story. Taking to time to film this, edit and share with us in addition to the project itself has to be so challenging. The siding looks great and being made of steel one would never guess. Nova Scotia (home of Anne Murray my favorite singer of all times) has brutal winter weather and this siding will last a lifetime. Todd and his power washing and staining project on a retreat to camp was priceless. His mind doesn't take a break from what can be done for the next project. Dumphy has become a loved and father type figure for the two of you and he adds a balance to your lives. The sound of the loons at camp brought back wonderful memories for me back years ago when my family would go to Loon Lake in upstate New York to my father's hunting camp (more like a poker camp). After watching your video each time I ask myself what are those two up to now. I am sure gardening is around the corner and completing the pool and project Bunky and twenty other projects along with working on the container home. Kudos to the furry babies as they are so precious and well behaved reminding me of my past five goldens. Hugs from afar and take care.
The light wood tone of your metal siding made the whole house have a really high-end Scandinavian appearance. It really pops with the black paint!

I'm from New Hampshire and I live in Europe now.... the sound of the Loons when you were sitting by the lake made me so instantly homesick for New England in summer.
Your photography is just so professional, Tyler. Your montages of the lake are just so beautiful-- from the sunsets to the rippling water to the gliding ducks and lakeside plants blowing in the breeze, and the cuts to Todd in all his beauty with the sun perfectly framed behind him... It shows how much you love him and how romantic and artistic you are, too.
I've had the pleasure to watch both of you for awhile and now I look forward to Sundays (which is usually my second least favorite day of the week) for your next video. You are both so resourceful and hardworking. The love you have for each other, your extended family of pets, your work...I'm gobsmacked by you both. The siding looks fantastic! And Tyler, I'm TOTALLY with you on not wanting to be up there! You are so brave! You guys have done the most incredible job with everything you've done on the land and at the lake house. You always amaze me. I felt so bad for you after that fiasco with the siding last fall. It must be great to have Dumpy there to learn from. It's obvious he really knows what he's doing and is giving you all the tools you need. Plus, you're developing even more confidence in the work you're doing.
OMG! Have I got an idea for you - use the plastic drawer liner from ikea or the stuff you put under rugs to prevent them from sliding (I bought a big roll of it from Canadian Tire) to sit or kneel on while on the roof!
We have a stackable washer and dryer and up- right beside it is an upright freezer- we use the top of the freezer as a handy place to put our detergent, fabric softener etc. The non-handy part is when the vibration from the laundry machines jiggles the freezer enough that bottles of laundry detergent would work their way back and fall behind the freezer! We covered the top of the freezer with Ikeas plastic drawer liner and nothing moves - problem solved - they make it in clear so it not even noticeable
