- A full step by step guide to planning a real IFR flight. We'll pick up our tablet and use ForeFlight and some other tools to plan an IFR flight in California between Santa Ynez (KIZA) and Palo Alto (KPAO). It's a typical early morning summer day on the West Coast with low lying fog complicating our flight planning. Let's dive in!

I flew from Oshkosh to Kissimmee for a family vacation a few weeks ago is a Cirrus SR20 with my new instrument rating. I think I planned a few hours to gather all the information. IFR planning takes a long time. Glad to be IFR though. Logged a legal approach in Kentucky and was in and out of clouds in Florida. It's nice to be able to run right through the afternoon clouds.
your videos are so wonderful, thank you. Hands down the best instructional aviation content on RUclips!
These videos really helped me understand instrument flying and got me better scores on stage checks (mini checkrides at Part 141 schools). Thank you so much for the amazing content!
Incredible and helpful, thank you for all your videos. Your thorough and deliberate presentation style is much needed and so affective. Thank you!!!
This came out right in time! Planning an IFR flight in two days and needed a quick refresher
Infinitely useful videos and always so well explained. Thank you so much!
Fantastic. Would love to see more just like this
Very helpful thank you!
i love u man ur a life saver
Great video!
6:35 I'm aging myself here, but every time I hear "ODP" I want to yell "Yeah you know me!"
On the NOTAMs, do you check just the Airport tab or do you look at Obstacle and TFR/ARTCC ever?
hi,to get jeppesen charts did u have to pay an additional package or it comes with the subscribe?i am from europe...thanks fro your videos
I have read through some of the items, and I'm not a pilot as yet. Can to fly point to point on your video if you can go to 10.000. Will that help wit atc. Thanks
So what is the flight simulator he uses in this? anyone?
One CFI to another: dam you’re good.
This stuff is great review..
btw-
Ifr- I follow railroads… 😉
GPS- go perfectly straight…. 😎
Great video, as always. But I feel you should have at least mentioned how to get a complete briefing in ForeFlight. Checking weather and NOTAM’s the way you outlined does not get logged by ForeFlight the way an actual briefing does. So the FAA could always come back with a “careless and reckless” charge in the event of an incident.
I love your videos, the voice is particularly soothing and articulate, however, for me i wish you would go a little slower and actually show either a pen or finger contacting each button, right now it is all too quick to follow without getting a headache.
Nice video. TAFs are only a valid weather source for airports within 5 miles of the station. AC 00-45H page 5-84. Thought you should know since you seem to care about paying attention to detail.
AC00-45H page 5-84 is talking about something else I think? I tried to find an answer to that question though, and just found an article saying you need to use an Area Forecast if there is no TAF. No ref though.
@@gwrallen No it does apply to that. You are supposed to use an Area Forecast though.
I disagree that the objective should be to plan your flight the way the FAA system wants it. (1:39) In reality the system is supposed to serve the public, not the other way around. The objective should be for the FAA to learn to assign routs that are more direct and more desirable for the pilot.
I believe there is a small mistake. I think for WAAS gps you have to check the raim prediction once before comencing the flight to make sure there are no outages along the route.
you know a doubt that i have, you guys talk a lot and we use a lot of "pre flight" waypoints and bla bla bla, but when people are really flying, they follow what ATC tells them. My point is, isn`t worthless to fill your flight plan before knowing that the ATC will change it anyways
