    As a South African, that was physically and mentally exhausting to watch. The only emotion felt at the end of the game was relief. England did everything that was asked of them. Their starting 15 were better than their counterparts by a substantial margin. The final result was solely because SA have the best bench in world rugby and, once again, saved our skins. Not sure if the can do that 3 games on the trot.

    As a South African fan, I have to say I was more scared going into this game than going into the game with France. Everybody was overlooking the English team, but I had an inkling that they were going to do this. Immense props to the English team. Playing like you did today, you would beat most teams in the world. Sad you may be, but I think you can hold your heads up very high because you were the greatest surprise package of this entire World Cup. Big, big ups to you. • @powerbite92
      @powerbite92 9 месяцев назад

      They wouldnt beat most teams in the world. The ABs IRE and FRA would have beaten them comfortably. SA is the only team that fields a starting backrow who cant compete effectively in the loose and thus they cede the contest for the opening 50 minutes. THEN they bring on their far better players, actual fetchers, who then help to swing the game for them. Against Sam Cane Van der Flier or Jelonch ENG would not have enjoyed the same advantages.. but because all of this is Verboten Analysis in the media we have to play pretend and pretend that "woah! England! World Beaters!" ..with each game they play SA's opposition can see their weakness become more and more glaringly obvious and each successive tier 1 opposition team enjoys an even more successful 1st half against the Bokke than the last.

I felt the game only really came alive after Ben O’keefe warned the teams about the “water boys/coaches” consistently coming on. Once the players were able to play without them in their ear, they started to play good rugby, at least that’s how it looked here.

      SA looked flat and tired. No surprise after last week. If they win this WC they'll certainly have earnt it. An epic pool game against Ireland, tough games against Scotland and Tonga, then that incredible quarter against France, followed by a very tough game against a tactically superb England, all very physical.

    When the dust settles people will reflect that England had a great game plan suited for the opposition and the conditions and almost won it. However it was a hugely negative game plan and when we needed to actually play rugby with ball in hand at the end we couldn’t. Just because we got to semi-final and pushed a great team close it doesn’t mean hide the fact that the team needs to improve massively.

The bounce of the ball was cruel for the Boks tonight and in the same breath ENG were playing a superior smart game and their tactical kicking was a master class!. ENG did more than enough to win, the replacements made the biggest difference and particularly in the scrum. Boks not good with the wet weather at all. Two successive weeks the Springboks got out of jail, but that is what Champions do, they find a way. England were always going to turn up and for 70 minutes were the better side, but against this kind of opposition, you have to be the better side for 80 minutes. Just two moments turned this game. Im not sure you can say South Africa had an off night, it was more England had a game plan and attitude which meant the Boks had to be at their very best to win. My one concern for the Boks next week is can they pull a third big performances out in a row. After last night the ABs will be wrll rested.

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir 9 месяцев назад

      SA looked flat and knackered after last week, which is understandable after such an epic against France, plus other tough games before that all catching up with them.
      Borthwick got the tactics spot on and the English weather helped us too.
      In the last quarter Ox made the difference at the scrums, the ref not picking up SA boring in didn't hurt either and England made a few mistakes. e.g. George fluffing two throw-ins near the SA line due to the greasy ball, Stewart kicking another up and under instead of to touch and pinning SA back in their 22, etc. Small margins but that's what decides such close games.
      Whilst normally I'd be gutted to lose a game we'd dominated for so long right at the end, I had such low expectations going into tonight that I'm mostly just proud of England's effort.
      If SA win next week nobody can say they haven't earnt it.

    • @mrb1380
      @mrb1380 9 месяцев назад

      @@speleokeir agree with that and we were unlucky on the final pen, but that was more a result of the perceived Bok scrum dominance so I get the decision. In the final analysis though, England exceeded expectations in this World Cup so Im not down about it. Im more disappointed that it will be a Southern Hemisphere name on the trophy for 9th out if 10 times and a missed opportunity for the Northern Hemisphere with France and Ireland leading the way. Ultimately the NH teams lack the nouse in these big games to get over the line.

    England played the conditions perfectly. Mitchell’s box kicking was perfect and caused us all sorts of problems. Englands starting 8 played really well, and I thought Lawes and Martin especially were immense.
    I thought the better team in the night lost but we somehow found a way to win that match and you have to give the Springbok team immense credit for being able to do that.
    The Springbok changes made the difference, Ox and Pollard especially.
    I just hope their is something left in the tank for us as all these brutal matches we have played must be impacting the team, because if we play like that next weekend, we toast!
    Hard luck England, well played.

I do think Englands kicking game was good but the springboks kicking was poor. If the springboks play like that against us which they might be forced too if it rains we might score big against them.
    That was probably the worst Springboks performance I've seen in many years I expected alot more from them.

    As well as England played, and I expected them to play as they did, the Boks were just rank awful. They also looked surprised with England’s tactics, didn’t look prepared at all for the kicking game they employed. The coaches are to blame for that flat performance by not making any selection changes. Boks were out on their feet last week and it was quite evident they weren’t up for this game mentally, physically, and emotionally. The World Cup got the final I think it deserves but I don’t think for one second that the Boks can win next week, at least not with the XV that started tonight.

    That was the best England have played all year. The reality is no attack, no try's scored and not putting the game to bed cost England tonight. They kept SA in the game and they took their one and only chance to score a try. Englands tactic of just holding on was a bad call. The tactics worked to neutralise SA but were the wrong tactics to win. Tonight England showed what they could do physically. All the problems are still there and a lot of improvement is needed. We shall see what Borthwick will do next. We see what needs to be done, can he?

    @herman7661 9 месяцев назад

    Excellent, objective commentary. The important thing is, I think, that England is back. They finally played as well as we know they can. These are excellent, experienced players. I believe that another factor was that the SA palyers had not fully recovered after France. Etsebeth, PSD, etc. were mere shadows compared to their form a week ago. I agree that it was a mistake to play them again this weekend, and this is may well cost them the cup next weekend.

    As a South African, I must say that England outplayed SA the entire game. It was gut wrenching and nerve wrecking the entire game. I agree with most comments that England used the weather conditions to their advantage. I think apart from SA working more on their attacking approach to the game, I think Rassie and Jacques needs to put more focus on improving their game plan in weather conditions like this. Props to Rassie for making all those changes early on in the game. At first glance I thought what the hell was he thinking to make these changes in the first half, however now I see the difference it made in the end result. Personally I think Ox and Pollard were the best changes he made as they won this game for the Boks. Even with the odds stacked against us the entire game I must commend SA's determination and fighting spirit as they never gave up throughout the game. Pollard had little game play the entire world cup but man I have never see a player as cool as a cucumber under immense pressure when kicking a penalty from the halfway line.

    That was a titanic arm-wrestle between two proud rugby nations and it was never going to be a fast-flowing try fest, especially in those weather conditions. England executed their game plan, negative or not, pretty damned well but unfortunately it fell apart over the last 12 minutes and South Africa were able to sneak home with the win and reach the Final, where either they or New Zealand will become the outright best nation at the World Cup with four titles.
    Unfortunately there has been a fair bit of talk already in the aftermath about the scrum penalty which Handre Pollard converted to win the game. Furthermore, on top of that the performance of referee Ben O'Keeffe has come under question again after French Captain Antoine Dupont accused him of not being up to standard following on from the Quarter Final. It seems like it's too easy to just point the finger of blame at the man with the whistle when your team loses a close one. O'Keeffe handled both of those games pretty well but of course can't referee the Final because his native New Zealand are in it.

    Great game plan by England to kick and disrupt, just a horrible game to watch, 73 kicks from hand and the weather was also a major factor. ON a dry day I believe SA would have crucified on the counter. However again England played to their max, so well done. However for rugby, thankfully the Springboks won through, so now we can have a decent game of rugby for the final between 2 of the 4 clearly best teams in the world. This was the first real challenge for England, SA had Scotland, Ireland and France to beat. So commiserations England, congrats SA and lets look forward to next weekend.
