I’m Portuguese. I can find backdate my lineage until the 15th century. We never left the country or owned slaves. My ancestors were just working class people, servants! Why should we pay reparations? I was a modern slave together with my mom in Portugal, almost 30 years ago. The Portuguese government likes slaves because of the taxes and companies pay peanuts to them. Now the most modern slaves in Portugal are from Timor, Nepal, India and Brazil.

Reparations is a legitimate form of Atonement. Portugal, Spain, England, and all those colonial powers are wealthy to a large degree because of the slave trade. Slavery by these countries were different than all other Slavery throughout history in that all other Slavery the slave could become free under the right circumstances. Slavery practiced by these countries were perpetual in that there was no way out except by death or escape. We are talking about generations in this vicious cycle. The scars are still felt in the black community until this day.

About 25 years ago the United Nations floated the idea that countries with a history of slavery should pay reparations to the descendants of the slaves. However, once it was pointed out that in Biblical times the Jews were slaves in Egypt and this would mean that Egypt would have to pay reparation to Jews, worldwide. The idea was then quietly dropped.

My late father was from a rich family in the North of Portugal (Porto) and sold his things to go to Africa( Angola) and build his life there , spite of the warnings of his family that what he was doing was crazy. He lost everything and he was called colonialist. He worked till 1981 in Angola cause he stayed there after the independence and was needed as a planes techinician in the airport of luanda and everytime he wanted to come to Portugal in vacations was dificult to have the government permission cause they were afraid he was not coming back.. Everytime he went back was full of sweets and some food to the children in Angola that were always waiting for him in the airport .

And the Slavs were kidnapped in the 1500-1700s and sold as slaves in Africa. So - Africa cannot be let off the hook, either. And as for you - I want to know what African country your ancestors came from so I could sue you for reparations for the enslavement of my people. That's your logic and I think I will appropriate it.
