    This video is perfect, it alleviates my concerns about the M2's performance. Whilst there is a place for the 14" M1 Pro, I don't think I need that much performance for my current needs.

      the price tag still hurts tho. i dunno why its $200 more expensive than the m1. it literally performs so similar. not to mention the temperatures, 108 degrees shortens that cpu's lifespan massively.
      as a computer science student, i was actually excited about the product. but the more videos i watch, the more disappointed i get.

    Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO much!! This is the comparison I was waiting for! I currently have an Air 2016 and I guess so many people also do, and 5 years is what we expect a machine to last. Mine has been struggling with heavier workloads like using illustrator and photoshop at the same time. It works, but slowly. I've been considering 2023 as the year I'll save to buy a new one, because in Brazil the cost for a regular person to get an Apple machine is usually 10x the cost compared to the US, so you need both an extremely good reason to upgrade and the courage to save a huge amount of money. Just to put in perspective, you can buy a used entry car for that much money. It's too expensive. Anyway, thank you so much!! I'm strongly considering this M2 MBAir.

      @Ramp can you please??? Omg thanks!! There’s no way I can buy one soon…
      I know people say the difference in performance from the M1 to the M2 is negligible, but I guess most people will be coming from older machines like me, and the jump will be huge. Even compared to the M1…
      I’ll use it mostly for teaching online and some designing, some adobe illustrator, photoshop, indesign, lots of pdf creating, screen sharing, video playing, content creation (images and videos)… so I’m looking forward to these newer chips to help me with that.
      Thanks

      It's kinda funny how all these RUclipsrs think they are smarter than Apple Engineers and have expert knowledge of SoC endurance curves under sustain thermal load.
      It's all based experiences they heard from unfounded "Bro Science" back in the 1990s. Today's processor have been rigorously tested to survive in 100C temps for years on end without failing. Apple/Intel/AMD do extensive testing to make sure they do.
      Just like why you don't need ECC ram for consumer products but in theory, it's possible that radiation from outer space can alter data of your RAM chips to cause data corruption and possibly system crash

    It's been a long time since I last created a build system for a project, but one of the things I recall doing was making sure the compilation was done on the RAM as much as possible - it was substantially faster. Though this was back when SSDs were not on most laptops/desktops, which is now making me curious how much faster RAM is vs a modern NVME - probably still quite a lot tbf.

    It works great until you use up all the ram (chrome, virtual machines,....) . When it starts swapping heavily it's excruciating.

    I would think the way a problem would manifest in this scenario is if like me you have dozens of tabs open and your IDE and then you want to do something and the computer runs out of memory which is very likely happen with only 8GB of RAM on the base model. When it starts swapping to the SSD there might be a noticeable slowdown on the machine.. but I'm not sure about how feasible this scenario is..

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 2 года назад +3

      Really, you do pro-work on an 8GB machine? I mean, why make your compile times slower than they need to be? Even just having dozens of Chrome tabs open and no IDE, I would know that I need a 16GB machine! I would probably go for 24GB, but more likely be using a MB Pro 14/16. You cannot blame Apple for your bad buying decisions, 8gb really, that is crazy!

    WHAT a difference, and I can actually have it on my lap without getting burned! :D - even when I had it on my desk (about 5cm solid wood thick), it would get hot on the underside of it! - the M1 pro I have used it while running some programs etc and I have not felt it get "hot" only a tiny bit warm AND I had the battery lasting for SO much longer, a whole world apart there.

    Android Studio's emulators used a lots of SSD. If you want to test on several emulators quickly, the SSD speed is crucial. Even when you want to shut down an emulator, the emulator will try to save a large file of several GB to remember the current state of the emulator. If your SSD is slow, the experience will be very laggy.

    They are right that the base model has a problem because it just has one nand chip. It’s a bummer but anyone who cares about overall performance needs to upgrade to the 512GB. If you end up swapping on the 256GB SSD model it slows down a lot. I usually upgrade the SSD a little anyway but it does make it pretty expensive machine compared to the old M1.

      Anyone who stresses their MBA should upgrade to 512GB in the first place.
      My parents used a MBA from 2013 (128GB SSD) for 8 years before upgrading to M1 MBA 2021 (256GB SSD). They never used their SSD past 80GB.
      Why? Because they don't take many photos and only use it for content consumption, email, excel, watching youtube, Facebook, etc ...

    Are you referring to the very smart engineers at Apple who are so wise, experienced & knowledgable authorities of their field that they shipped batches upon batches of macbooks with those butterfly keyboards?? Yes, they're humans too! And humans can & DO make mistakes, its just part of who we are.
    Just because the engineers have set 110 degree max temp for the machines, doesn't necessarily mean that this could not affect the longevity of the device. I think your concern is more than justified. As we are all increasingly aware of nowadays, there are many many hats in the decision room when it comes to designing & shipping products, engineers are just one of them, and they tend to not be as powerful as the marketing, finance & business people.
    Tread with caution people, these machines aren't cheap!

    Hey Alex. Thanks for the videos. I was wondering if you can run a test for us. A common setup is running Docker and web pack with some react or vue app. My 16” MacBook Pro i7 with 16 gb of ram turns on the fans with this setup. I wonder, how would a M2 MBA handle this? Also, I just found out there is a low power mode, can you test how it impacts performance? Thanks!

      The macbook pro 14 with the m1 pro 8/14 on Bestbuy is going for $1749
      $149 for better a brighter and faster refresh display, More cpu and gpu performance, better thermal performance ( it has a fan) , better speakers , better keyboard ( due to more travel) etc . . .

    I have a base M1 Mini....Whoa!....even after almost two years. I came from a 2008 Xeon Mac Pro and a 2014 iMac i7. I would love to have a base M2 MBA but I know I would not get the same performance leap between the M1 to M2 as the Intel Macs to the M1. The expectations surrounding M2 were just crazy unrealistic. 95% of Mac Users will go nuts over the base M2....really

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 2 года назад

      The M1 Mini is probably the best M1 device (not including M1 Pro, Max and Ultra). With its design and cooling it is the best of the lower cost machines (non-Pro). Even now it holds up well to the M2 Macs, though I suspect when the M2 Mini arrives it will be a nice improvement, but for M1 Mini owners, probably not enough to upgrade (3nm will be that time).
      The M2 MB Pro 13 can wipe the floor with the M1 MB Air in most tests, the fan and added performance as well as the media engines, make it a significantly better machine, despite the nonsense from Max Tech. Of course, you have to configure to your use, so 16GB of RAM for photo and video editing. Coding, I suspect RAM is far more important than storage speed, so 24GB is best.

    • @Traegorn

      I have both an M1 Mini and an M2 Air... and yeah. With the work I do the difference is negligible. No one with an M1 should be looking to upgrade -- these devices are for people who are switching from Intel Macs, not folks who already have Apple Silicon.
      (I bought the M2 Air because I needed a portable machine for the road -- the M1 Mini is still my primary workhorse computer)

      Yeah I’m not sure how expectations got out of whack. We went from a14 cores (m1) to a15 cores (m2). The a15 wasn’t a huge performance jump from the a14 and was mostly about efficiency.
