  • The early General Motors T10 4 speed used in 1957 to 1962 C1 Corvettes and the Chevrolet Bel Air was weak and eventually was replaced by the Muncie 4 speed in late 1963. This conversion installs stronger gears with better ratios while maintaining factory fit and shifters. The car runs a 3.08 axle with a 2.88 1st gear making is an ideal 4 speed with no need to go to a 5speed.

    That box looked like a Saginaw or an iron Muncie. I worked on manuals in the 80s and 90s in Australia and never saw many of them in our shop. They were in some early Ho;den Monaro models. BW 4 speed single rails in some 70s and 80s Fords and Chrysler used to twist the mainshaft splines too. I once put Datsun 510 gears into an early Datsun Fairlady case. The Fairlady original gearset has Porsche type synchros. Took a bit of modifying too. Interesting stuff!

    I'm going to try some of that Thick body wash for nostalgia. I smelled like gear oil in the 70's while I found out all the weak spots in Muncie 4 speeds and 12 bolt rear ends. Great channel Paul!

    Missed you. Hope you get to feeling better. In a 350 small block and when they just came out with the angle plug head from GM and a crane cam back in the day I went from a close ratio muncie tranny to a super t 10 with 2.88 first gear. The car ran faster with the close ratio than the 2.88 first gear. You loose so many rpm from 3rd to 4th it took me out of my rpm with cam and rear end gear. On the street didn't even have to use first gear just used second because first gear was just a waste. This was on a 1973 Z28 with 4.88 rear end gears and 7,000 rpm shifts.. Am sure they make first gear to second longer today to keep 3rd to 4th closer to the close ratio. I sold the super t 10 and went back to my close ratio muncie tranny. Also the super t 10 seem to always grind a little going into 4th while on it. I would have taken the super t 10 apart to see why it was grinding into 4th gear but since I lost so many RPM between 3rd and 4th and the car ran slower just put the close ratio muncie back in and it ran much better. Depends on your application really. I must have got a good close ratio muncie tranny it shifted like a dream with a hurst shifter as the only upgrade and scatter shield. Only one who could beat me was a guy with a 1970 chevelle ss with a 454 in his car. He only got me by 3/4 car length in the quarter mile back in the early 70s. Super great times back then. I still get folks yet today to fix there 4 speeds you take the cover off the tranies and all the synchro and gears are all tore up. They think you can fix it by just install new brass synchros. I said it all shot and they don't want to put the money into it so I never see it again. I tell them to call you but am sure they don't by the way I told them 1,000 and up to fix this old tore up stuff. Then they come up with all the cheap crap on ebay and I say it's all junk on there. So am sure they buy that crap get a book and try and fix it. I told them I won't use that junk to fix it cause I don't need all the problems that come with it. At 72 I just give them your website to look you up. Hope you got a few to fix.

      The 2.88 ratio is not good for drag race applications and should never be used with a rear axle higher numerically than a 3.55. This conversion is an altternative to installing a 5 speed in a C1 corvette. You drop the rear down to 3.08 and have better acceleration and economy in 4th gear. By the way this combination was used in later 1981 corvettes as well as the 84-88 vettes with a 3.08 rear using the Doug Nash OD. Thanks for watching

It is the best book for learning how to build a manual transmission. The book he showed at the beginning of the video is the best go to source you can have. Buy the book. Thanks Paul for your knowledge and your absolute awesome workmanship.

    super interesting Paul! for the sake of curiosity, why make the conversion shafts with the 26/27 spline input output? if they're being made as a retrofit item, why not make them work with the original clutch disc and drive shaft yoke?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  3 месяца назад +2

      The 16 spline shafts and gears were designed for their intended use from 1957 - 1963. So... low horsepower. The advantage is that you are now using late model Super T10 gears with better ratios and keeping the shifter location unchanged. As far as splines go.... the 26 spline input and 27 spline output are way stronger... also explained in the video,

    I am in the process of upgrading mt early c2 with the t-10 trans. I expect 425 to 450 lbft so would like to make some changes in the trans to make it stronger. I don't want to change the 2:20 1st gear as I am running 4:10 gears withs the 340 hp engine, , My trans was redone about 20,000 miles ago and is in good condition. What changes would you suggest to handle the extra torque?

    • @GearBoxVideo

    is that an 1982 Camaro mainshaft?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  3 месяца назад +2

      No . The 82 mainshaft would put the speedo gear in a different location. This uses factory early T10 reverse gears as well

  • @aero_pilot923
    @aero_pilot923 Месяц назад

    so the locking or non-interlocking syncroteeth (brass syncro) take ALL the engine horsepower torque through those beefy gears? I thought the syncro teeth were there just to match up with the adjoining gear so that the sliding shift gear can ingage the wide span of the gear itself

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  Месяц назад

      Yes, all the clutch teeth are taking the full load of the torque. That is what connects the gear to the shaft. Certain cars I've actually seen those teeth shear on the high load.

    • @aero_pilot923
      @aero_pilot923 Месяц назад

      @@GearBoxVideo That's incredible, yes amazing the syncro or as you properly say 'clutch teeth' can take these loads, amazing come to think of it. BTW LUUUUVVV your videos! I just wish you had more to show!! I've learned so much!!!
      Another RUclipsr :'2vintage' say's his gear set on his Honda Quad, the gears keep slipping out of gear and into neutrol on it's own. And he's stumped looking at the gear set and can't find anything wrong with it when he's closely inspecting them.
      Please more videos!! 🙂🙂
