They made a lot of noise over 're-introducing' hot breakfasts in first class, and didn't mention that only a handful of services every day would have it, with none on the weekend. They'll just throw a sandwich at you for the rest.
A very balanced report however the East Coast catering has been going downhill for a few years along with the ride quality oi the Azumas, ask a driver when you get off. I often travel from Aberdeen to Leuchars first class on the Azuma LNER train. Standard class is £8 and first class £13 sometimes, for the 1hour 10min journey. It is worth paying the extra ticket price for the complimentary food and drink. The main courses are tasty but very small portions. I travelled once were bacon roll was the only item available, but my recent evening trip all food items were available. Staff are always polite and helpful. Never known the train to be late.

Hello. You make some good points but not everyone lives or works in city centres and that's one advantage of air ... especially if you drive and park at the airport. London is so spread out and many travellers find their local airport more convenient than a downtown train station. Just look at how many London airports offer flights to Edinburgh. And it's the same in Scotland. Many travellers reside in Fife. So do you drive to Edinburgh airport (or take a bus/taxi) or do you take the train to Waverly and then take a bus/tram back to the airport ?
im a bit confused about the seating. I want to go first class but the seating is confusing. I simply want to sit by my wife side by side, without having to look across and see 2 more people staring at me the entire time sharing a 4 seater. Im concerned I will get stuck look directly across from someone else for 5 hours. Can anyone shine some light on how this works, maybe your suggestions, the best way to go, knowing my scenerio. Thanks in advance
I used to get very cheap last minute first class tickets (2013-15), it was epic, especially York to Brighton, but navigating the underground after the free wine was .... interesting... Also, get a railcard, and do split ticketing, you save soo much money! Also, I was on a super tight budget to go to Lille once and got the coach... never again. Train/plane every time, but it was certainly an experience!
Personally I am not eligible for a railcard anymore but younger people watching this absolutely should! My memory of taking the train back around 2013/15 are also very different… probably why I’m sticking to it even now when it’s not as sweet as it used to be 🥲
..we recently travelled LNER 1st class to and from Edinburgh..not impressed...thought the on train service mediocre..none of the toilets in 1st class were working...and the Azuma is not a patch on the HST or the class 91 and Mk IV coaches for comfort...
Another excellent and informative video kakibot. I am getting the train to Edinburgh on the 30th and hope my journey is as pleasant as your journey. 🙂👍
Great video-we're going to be taking this trip soon! (Pro sound tip: remove the dead mouse-the fuzzy windbreak thing-when you're shooting indoors. It's not necessary, and it looks like you're being eaten by a tribble.) 🙃
I find it helps me tone down the plosives! More so on some microphones than others - currently I have a wireless DJI and it really benefits from having it on all the time! .)
Watched a youtube I think it was 'Dylan's Travels' He did a trip from Edinburgh Castle to London using trams & trains. Arrived at Westminster bridge. Then got the london underground to Heathrow and flew back to Edinburgh & used the trams to get back to Edinburgh Castle. The time was 10 minutes faster by flying, Work it out. 10 minutes gained & nothing seen from the scenery of a nice comfortable train!
I didn't normally travel first on trains but the standard seats on the Azumas are so awful that for a longer journey I'll usually go first nowadays. Seriously the standard seats are worse than commuter servces like tfL rail.
Thanks for the good travel documentary. I think first class means the first people get all the food. A so next time bring your own picnic basket , to be safe….well done
Silly question from a tourist who plan to travel with train from London to Edinburgh. Where did you found such a nice prices? All I can see is 200-300 pounds per person for the 1st class and around 100 pounds for the standard. Are there any secrets or just prices increased so dramatically during the last 2 years?
Very good review; agree with comments on catering! We've travelled from Invernea to KX a few times, last time in 2019 the only allowed one item for breakfast (departs 07:55). Just seemed very miserly.
Hi ,from Southern Indiana!❤ We are coming to Edinburgh in mid April for 2 weeks. Our thought was to plan a day trip to London as well. Is it possible to take an early train ....visit Buckingham Palace , The Westminister Abbey and get to Abbey Road for a quick picture and back to Edinburgh in the same day ?
I feel Waverley train station is much more convenient than Edinburgh Airport; Waverley train station is right next to Princes Street, and I think it's the same in London too! By the way I know a discount can find cheaper tickets, if someone needs, I am happy to share ❤
Hi thanks for the video review. I'd just like to ask if you know whether seat 5 is one on its own? I tried looking out for it but only saw seat 7! haha. Also I probably wont eat any of the food as i have strict dietary requirements however how much free wine do you get? x Thank you!
I've only gone 1st once, a couple of years ago, going South from Leeds. It was super cheap as it was on one of the only trains, while the Azuma was starting to come into service. Those seats were really big but due to Covid the food was pretty much just packet stuff. With the new ones I'm not sure it's worth it. Miffy!
You forgot to mention in the first class that there is a table in front of the chair, which offers some space to breathe and not feel packed like in the 2nd class
From your video it seems the 1st class seats facing east are the single seats. As a family of 4, we want to sit together, but that means the double seats on the west side. This sucks. I will have to book double standard seats facing east just for this reason.
Loved the review. Sad state of first class being out of so many menu items as well as lack of service during final leg. I am not demanding and normally pass on most food and drink in short trips but nice to be asked and to get some tea Laughed at weird person if large bag. I travel to and around Europe and when I do tend to take 3 to 4 weeks to make it worth it. That means a giant piece of luggage and a small backpack. Normally not an issues since I check bag on a plane or rent a medium to large car. Can be an issue on some buses which is why I stopped taking them and get a car or hire a driver. Seems silly a large train does not accommodate travelers with large bags
Hi, I love the video; very informative, but I hope you don't mind if I point out one thing that frustrates me a bit; not just with your video, but from other train vloggers like "Dylan's Travels" or Paul Lucas' "Wingin It"... Please remember that the term "pricy" is actually a relative term. What might seem pricy to people who actually live in Britain, might actually be quite inexpensive, or even cheap to people in other countries. You said that the price for First Class on LNER was about 95£ ($117.09) one way from Edinburgh Waverly to London. A closely equivalent distance would be a train ride from Boston, MA. to Washington DC. This price on Amtrak would be anywhere from 229.73£ ($283) to 280.87£ ($346) one way for first class. Double that if you want a return ticket., so considering the fact that all in all; depending on if or when the service might return to "pre-pandemic" quality, and my husband's and my health issues; would I personally as an American pay that price you stated? Yes in a heartbeat!
Oh wow, a sleeper train? I've only heard about it! (And I took sleeper trains before in Europe - it feels like the South to North journey in UK wouldn't be long enough to actually get proper sleep in? How long does it take? .)
@@Kakibot We got the southbound sleeper last month. Left Waverley at 23:40, and "arrived" at Euston 07:07. (Google Maps showed that we got into London more than an hour before, but we just trundled at the end - and even stopped at times.) Wouldn't do it again though... Awfy expensive for what it is and (bunk room, admittedly) my heart pounded with claustrophobia in the tiny room.
If you are travelling on the "Caledonian Sleeper" overnight train between London and Edinburgh, be sure to try the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties in the Lounge Car (with maybe a couple of single malt Scotch Whiskies to help you sleep) before you retire to your cabin for the night!
What happens if you can't find space for your suitcase? Thanks for the insight as my daughter may be taking that ride soon. Too bad about the Internet not being reliable.
There are a bunch of bicycle storage spaces, so that’s a plan b if needed - I’m sure if your daughter is on a busy train, the staff will be ready to help!
@@Kakibot As someone who often takes my bike on a train, it's really annoying when people have piled up suitcases in the area clearly marked for bikes. It happens a lot. You shouldn't encourage this practice.
@@Clivestravelandtrains I understand - I don't think the staff should allow this if there are any people getting on with bikes. At the same time the only alternative seemed to be piling bag onto passenger seats, which poses exactly the same problem down the line when more people get on! I guess these trains are just not designed with... bags in mind ./
I will be coming up from London on Saturday on LNER 1st class for a week in Edinburgh (and area) so it will be interesting to compare my journey. Do you have any recommendations for a good place in Edinburgh to get a scotch pie? I know of the piemaker but I am always looking for other recommendations.
It's about time LNER stopped calling it 'First Class' because the service is most definitely NOT. They should instead call it a Premium Fare ticket with 'Complimentary Service'. I'm a frequent business traveller on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London. At one point Virgin East Coast ran a decent first-class service which almost justified the higher ticket price, but things went into rapid decline around 2016-2017. IMO, LNER has not improved anything except the general cleanliness of the trains following the pandemic. I just travel standard class now and I buy my food to take with me on the journey.
UK trains are overpriced because all the contracts are leased out to private parties, often funny enough to national state owned railway companies of other European countries. The Dutch national railway company NS operates no less than 7 UK companies, and many more by the French and German equivalent. Just booked a train ticket from Amsterdam to Heidelberg in Germany about 2 weeks ahead and it only costs me 35 euro, so about 30 Pound. Its roughly the same distance as Edinburgh-London. The main part of the journey is with the fancy German ICE high speed train even. I've read that the UK is looking at getting these contracts back and have the state operate them again. Hopefully that will make the prices more reasonable.
Awsome video thinking of taking the train to Liverpool when I arrive in Edinburgh in October.. also I watched a few of you vlogs from like 6 years ago … one where you’re wearing a long purple wig?? Simon had SHORT hair??? Lol
We do! At this point it’s also basically vintage though as my dad in law has been taking good care of them for years and years! A lot of upkeep has gone into them .)
@@Kakibot My retirement goal (in 20 years?) Is to treat myself to an original. I have always loved the style since seeing it as a feature on the Fraiser set. When I watched that as a teen twenty years back, I had no idea how expensive it really was.
Enjoyed this greatly but although rail in the UK is generally very acceptable they do it so much better on the Continent where in addition to Standard (C'mon it is really 3rd) you have other options which we no longer have here. I want the convenience of rail - city centre to city centre, the ability to carry luggage of rail (when will they have great space for big bags?) but have the comfort and service of airlines? I can do a basic level 3 hr air trip and get a decent meal and drinks but a first class rail meal does not compare. The problem is that a large proportion of First Class passengers are travelling on the firm - essentially for free and will accept the present poor standards of food and drink without complaint. Space and weight restrictions on rail are worlds away from those on airlines but you can still get decent food and rink on a transatlantic airbus so why not on an Edinburgh - London express? Last moan - why do they manage to serve the tea or coffee hot but not the beer cold?
I can only agree with all of your points - and yes, it often feels like people who pay for 1st class as a treat or a special occasion are kinda left behind, because the rest is just business travellers who barely pay attention to the details anymore. It all really boils down to which mode of transportation one hates the least!
In the UK you can always buy what they now call a "walk-on" ticket, but they are usually (but not always) dearer than advance tickets. If the advance tickets are all sold, you can still buy a "walk-on" ticket. Users of Interrail tickets can board any train, but a seat isn't guaranteed unless you make a seat reservation at the ticket office beforehand. The train operating companies are obliged to keep a certain percentage of seats for "walk-on" passengers. In Avanti West Coast this is usually Coach C, for example. The Lumo service is new and I don't know if they allow "walk-ons" as they have a different type of train operating contract.
@@afinecity1830 If you buy an open return ticket you don't "have to" book in advance. Quite often I buy an open return - return half valid one month - if I don't know exactly when I'll be coming back. The other advantage of an open return is that you can break your journey en-route, which I sometimes do. I regularly travel between Glasgow and York, and sometimes when I decide to do that journey all the advance tickets are gone. The train companies seem to live in a fantasy world where everyone can plan all their moves weeks in advance.
We’ve booked first class for the same journey this summer… are the seats more comfortable than standard? Or are they the same but just a bit more privacy?
I can't imagine that's too much of an issue; I mean people do that on planes sometimes, but if it really becomes a problem, you can just call the crew over to assist you, yes?
Before getting on the train go kfc get it to take away go greggs get a couple of sausage rolls then pop so sainsburys get a bottle of vodka and a 1.5 liter bottle of coke total spend in including a 35cl bottle of vodka alcohol. We are British we expect alcohol =..£17.00..so don't bother paying an extra 70 to 100 quid for first class
I don't know why the US can't have nice trains like these. For the massive size of the US, you think that would be a thing. Also the trains in the US look like they have been in service since the 1980's, and are super slow, max speed is about 55-60 mph.
Is that a grey Miffy? My friend loves Rainbow Rowell. Good video, we had wanted to do this so we could squeeze in London for two or three days during our trip but we wound up not because of expenses. My husband would prefer to fly and get there faster but a train does look nice.
With getting to and from airports, I wouldn’t say it’s much faster! Maybe an hour faster if you count in all transfers to airports and also the extra time necessary as an air travel padding!
Just wanted to reach out and ask for a recommendation. You’ve mentioned your accountant before and their advice regarding bank account opening, using Wise, etc. We are immigrating to Edinburgh late august and as two self employed persons (who get income streams globally) do want an accountant to handle the nuts and bolts of filing, etc. Kindly advise your accountants details ;)
I've only really ever had the one accountant I still work with to this day, so I don't feel experienced enough to give you a recommendation - also my accountant is quite old fashioned and I often feel like I am just freaking him out with the 10 different ways I make money all around the internet haha .D Sorry I can't help more! HMRC also does a lot of seminars etc where they educate people on how to do their own self-employed tax returns, so.. if you have the time to learn, you might be able to do it yourself .)

..we recently travelled LNER 1st class to and from Edinburgh..not impressed...thought the on train service mediocre..none of the toilets in 1st class were working...and the Azuma is not a patch on the HST or the class 91 and Mk IV coaches for comfort...
Very interesting video. My husband and I are thinking of taking the train from London to Edinburgh in September visiting from the US.
I do LNER first class from Edinburgh to Aberdeen & back on Wednesday
If time is not of the essence, you can get good fares on Avanti West service to Euston from Edinburgh down tve West Coast mainline
Just visited your city!!! We had so much fun!!
Very helpful video. What website do I use to book the high speed train from Edinburg to London? I will be arriving from USA.
I am planning doing London to Inverness on the direct train later this year!
Another excellent and informative video kakibot. I am getting the train to Edinburgh on the 30th and hope my journey is as pleasant as your journey. 🙂👍
Glad you found it helpful! .) Have a good trip!
Great tips in the comments section. unfortunate food choices / availability. hopefully the food items are related to supply shortages...
You should try the Lumo train, £30 each way and more comfortable seats
That must be non-peak times...
Perhaps LNER management should see this and do some staff training
Oh and Berwick is a dump, been there it’s full of charity shops - it’s horrid
Taking the LNER this Nov 3. Do they offer meals/snacks in the economy class?
Totally enjoyed this helpful video.
I also have a good discount to share
Very informative video! What’s the opening song?
Silly question from a tourist who plan to travel with train from London to Edinburgh. Where did you found such a nice prices? All I can see is 200-300 pounds per person for the 1st class and around 100 pounds for the standard. Are there any secrets or just prices increased so dramatically during the last 2 years?
Very good review; agree with comments on catering! We've travelled from Invernea to KX a few times, last time in 2019 the only allowed one item for breakfast (departs 07:55). Just seemed very miserly.
Hi ,from Southern Indiana!❤
We are coming to Edinburgh in mid April for 2 weeks.
Our thought was to plan a day trip to London as well.
Is it possible to take an early train ....visit Buckingham Palace , The Westminister Abbey and get to Abbey Road for a quick picture and back to Edinburgh in the same day ?
how far is the train station from Westend hostel?
I approve of that train, although I arrive cranky from all the free coffee!
thanks for sharing. btw. i also heard that on trainpal can receive 5% off
I feel Waverley train station is much more convenient than Edinburgh Airport; Waverley train station is right next to Princes Street, and I think it's the same in London too! By the way I know a discount can find cheaper tickets, if someone needs, I am happy to share ❤
Wifi seems to be a problem on lot's of trains (not only UK) you have to be lucky. And it's often really slow
Miffy!
Yay for Miffy being spotted!! .D
Make sure you complain about the errors.. they will give you compensation!
I shall unleash British levels of gentle fury at them!
...I complained about the fact NO toilets were working in 1st class by Twitter in journey...thought the reply I got not what was required...
You forgot to mention in the first class that there is a table in front of the chair, which offers some space to breathe and not feel packed like in the 2nd class
Kaki! I have a suggestion, Compare LuMo/LuNo with LNER Azuma from Edinburgh to London and back to Edinburgh on different services?
I'd love to try sometime! I don't have any London trips planned for anytime soon but if I ever do, I will deffo document it! .)
I am not demanding and normally pass on most food and drink in short trips but nice to be asked and to get some tea
Laughed at weird person if large bag.
I finally found the Betterhelp ginger girl. The ad was annoying. But boy you have stolen my heart 🥰🥰😘
What app do you have when you are watching a movie on your laptop at 7:37?
VLC, it's a pirated movie
Also which train do you suggest ?
Great video 👍👍 ciao from italy 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Very Nice your video. From BSAS. Argentina 🇦🇷🇦🇷
I always use my mobile connection when on a train as I have an unlimited data plan.
Missed the Bridges of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
I will take that journey in July, but using the night train version. I am SO excited about it, have you ever experienced it?
Wow what an epic journey 😊😊👍👍
Great video.
Hi , dose the same train take you from Edinburgh to London and back to Edinburgh , take care .
I will be coming up from London on Saturday on LNER 1st class for a week in Edinburgh (and area) so it will be interesting to compare my journey. Do you have any recommendations for a good place in Edinburgh to get a scotch pie? I know of the piemaker but I am always looking for other recommendations.
Excellent quality ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
thank-y0u.
Is food included in first class ticket?
I am not weird with my big suitcase 😅 I just need a lot of stuff just in case 😆
I get that, nobody wants to recycle the same look two days in a row in LONDON! .D
Nice review. I don't generally think it is worth it. First class can be noisy and crowded too!
We took the Lumo train last week 25 £ each way per person. Cheap, convenient, OK for a 4 hours and a half journey.
Is there a First Class Lumo Train? same route
It’s not the LNER railway. It’s just LNER, as the R denotes Railway. It’s the London North Eastern Railway.
Lol
Oh no you have delved way too deep into the youtube history! .D
You have a replica Eames lounge chair?
Have you thought of trying a National Express coach from Edinburgh to London from about £15?
i once did Megabus Victoria to Buchanan Bus station in Glasgow £4.50. 9.5 hours bargain
Hello. Planning to take this journey soon - can I get a train ticket on the day of travel, right at the Waverly station?
@@Clivestravelandtrains thank you. This is very helpful.
You can but it will be very expensive. Always book in advance if you possibly can, even if it's just the day before.
The train companies seem to live in a fantasy world where everyone can plan all their moves weeks in advance.
how fast it can go???its it worth of been call bullet train?
We’ve booked first class for the same journey this summer… are the seats more comfortable than standard? Or are they the same but just a bit more privacy?
They are definitely larger, so that helps the comfort levels big time!
Were the meals free or did they cost extra?
In first class, all the food and drinks are free!
I've found a great discount that's much cheaper than usual. If you need to buy tickets, I can help you take advantage of this offer.
Where die you find it? I just found 5%off on trainpal. Could you share pls?
Reserved seats can be a nightmare, you book your seats for your journey only to find some person sat there, sometimes a argument can break out
Oh no! Thankfully that has never happened to me, that would give me so much anxiety about booking anything ever again x)
Never had that in over a decade of travelling on this route.
@@Bungle2010 you are very lucky,if it has not happened to you so far
I can't imagine that's too much of an issue; I mean people do that on planes sometimes, but if it really becomes a problem, you can just call the crew over to assist you, yes?
First Class is actually right at the front in the drivers cab 🤭
Many thanks to ...... I would like to say that I got a better price when I purchased my railcard❤
How can I get cheaper railcard?
Two togehter railcard is a massive boon
Thank you for the reply!!! So thorough and kind. Totally get the “not enough experience” to share a recommendation. Will definitely try the self filing route with HM tax seminars first. Thanks a bunch and more videos soon please!!! Maybe Lumo train comparison one day….. 😉
