I think the last scene with Hurley and Ben is my favorite in the whole series. Both just the sheer wholesomeness of the scene and that they complete their character arc. Hugo has shed his doubts of himself, is confident and has been a great leader. Ben was the furthest from redemption of the main cast, but through years of their relationship he is almost redeemed.
You explained the finale and the perception of the finale perfectly. It’s very frustrating that the show, and the on-island events of the finale, are overshadowed by that final 15 minutes. While I loved the flash-sideways and the finale on live viewing as a kid, I definitely had that mindset that the last 15 mins in the church were the revelation of the show and the answer we’ve been waiting for. I regret that because it made me not care as much about the island story. On rewatch, the island parts of the finale have become possibly my favorite episode. I wouldn’t change anything about Lost and I still find the flash-sideways unbelievably emotional (it also is the only show to basically complete two character arcs for each character). However, I very much believe if the flash-sideways didn’t exist, and the story stayed on the island and played out the same way, the finale would be received better. The island plot is what I feel attached to all of these years later, and you are spot on that it is unfortunately disregarded due to the sideways twist, as well as the show as a whole.
This show, and your continued rehashing has helped my own faith. I’m not a religious person and neither was my father who has passed, but I love the idea of a place where life goes on and I can be reunited with him regardless of religious constructs. I will continue to be my best self in the mean time.
After watching all 6 episodes for a combined total of 10 hours I have come to the conclusion that both you and I need to touch some grass. Joking aside, congrats these are brilliant.
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I watched it all too and I regret nothing 😊 I'm in a low point of my life and reconnecting with a favorite show from my teenage years helped me. Thank you for sacrificing grass touching to make this masterpiece. God bless you ❤
LOST was the first show I truly obsessed over, analyzed it and interacted with the online community and after the LOST finale I was quite baffled with the whole "they were dead the whole time" thing, it's just a display of complete media illiteracy and LOST couldn't have hammered it harder in our heads than have a character basically talk straight to the audience and say it was all real and people still didn't get it. It's frustrating.
I had a hard time keeping up with it when it was week to week, especially if you missed an episode. I didn't fully appreciate it until I could binge watch it. It was almost like it was meant as a streaming show before streaming was really a thing. Almost like... it was connected to the future... *twilight zone theme intensifies*
@@radagast7200in the uk E4 played the last episode before the new one then on E4+ you could watch the episode again as it was an hour behind. I don't think it would of been as big on streaming. The wait became part of it. The gaps between episodes gave every time to think and talk about it, the gaps between mid season, drove you nuts but gave you something to look forward to, the gaps between seasons was a cultural event.
@@radagast7200 I'm so glad I dropped watching LOST on TV after the first season and jumped on a pirate ship and just watched the new episodes when I felt like it and re-watch them if I felt like it. (Back in the days in my country we got American TV shows at least a year later than they were first broadcasted in the US.)
@@deathfab I can't even remember how many LOST forums I was on back in the days, speculating about the next episode, the next season, the newest ARG between seasons or whatever. Good times.
I actually only discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago, binged the whole of your Theory Of Everything series, and was disappointed that this part wasn't there... and now I've been able to watch the best part of all... you've done a masterful job of explaining Lost and also defending Lost from those unfair criticisms of those who didn't invest in the show like the true fans did. If there was anyone I'd trust to revive the show, it'd be you, brother. However, like you, I think it's best left to rest as a piece of perfect storytelling and the legend that influenced all future TV show formats and ideas since. Your ending speech really choked me up... it was beautifully summed up and really captured the deep messages and morals that Lost itself had interwoven throughout its six amazing seasons. Thank you for doing this show justice.
What's strange is that multiple times I've calmly explained how everyone was NOT dead the whole time to people with that misconception, and they refused to be corrected and even seemed to have a hostile tone as they insisted everyone WAS dead and that makes the show terrible, etc. Some people just want to hate the series for no good reason. It seems some people are determined to feel bitter toward Lost and its creators based on their own mistake for the rest of their lives.
I agree that there are people who like to hate on the series regardless of explanations or evidence. Not just about the ending, but the idea that LOST answered many of its questions and that the writers had a plan for the mythology behind the scenes. I'm making a video about that very subject next.
Wow. Congratulations on finishing out this 6 part series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every video, and they all have helped me appreciate LOST much more than I already did. It makes so much more sense now, and those frustrating parts and much less so.
Lost is the greatest show ever, it's my all time favorite. Waiting for this video of yours was truly worth the wait and I like your idea of a sequel story with Aaron and Ji Yeon. I still would love a prequel mini series of the Egyptian Era the most. Great work
Last time I watched Lost I started writing down fun ideas for a sequel series about Hurley, Ben, and Walt on the island, but it would also pick up with Aaron and Ji-Yeon off the island and wanting to know more about what happened in the past. There would be appearances from Rose and Bernard, of course. I also thought about flashbacks to the ancient Egyptians. I never did anything with these ideas, though. Never been the fan fiction writing type. Maybe I should do it. It might be good practice for my own original stories.
@@alfredvickers4054 You should! If writing is something you want to do, write every day. About anything and everything. Just like anything else, there's muscle you have to work, a style you need to develop. Let that imagination run wild, and good luck!
I just finished my first watch of Lost and it's truly such an amazing, one-of-a-kind show that I will definitely watch again. I was looking for good videos about the series because there were some things that I felt I didn't quite understand and stumbled upon your videos. I now bingewatched all 6 and feel like I love the show even more for it's depth and great and thorough writing! So thank you!:) To me it's kinda funny that some people claim the series should have ended after season 4 because to me personally the last 2 seasons were so necessary to tie everything in and make the show feel finished and "round". Season 5+6 were what turned me from a more casual viewer to a absolute fan!
Thank you for all the work you've put into this series Lost Explained. This is my all time favourite series and I am rewatching it with my girlfriend (her first time). Your videos have been extremely helpful at understanding the meanings of a lot of things within the Lost universe and for that I am grateful.
My guy, this is beautiful. You are truly an amazing writer, and the explanation of the Flash Sideways [ 28:15 ] has me almost in tears. This series has been a treat to listen to, and I must thank you heartily for putting so much time and effort into it! You've earned a sub for life!
Rewatching the series after so many years, because of you! Thank you sooo much. my favorite show of all time felt disappointing becasue i was in that crowd of critics. But now, i get it. and my favorite show, has my favorite ending. its sublime and so beautiful and truly spiritually coherent and consistent. Really cant thank you enough for this effort! G-d bless, and see you in another life, Brother.
This is an absolutely wonderful series you have put together here, and reaching the end feels almost like losing the show all over again. I am currently in the process of a rewatch with my wife and I still cant believe this show exists. I cant believe a team of writers went to the herculean effort of making it, and that the world has largely turned its back on it, and dismissed it with a few lazy hand-waves and a comment about "nothing being answered". Thank you for hopefully helping some folks gain some more appreciation for this incredible piece of work that I love so dearly.
As for "The Magic Box", you should watch the Soviet film "Stalker" 1979. It talks about a certain ROOM located in a mysterious closed area called the ZONE.
That's what I love about Lost. While most mysteries and questions are answered enough for the story to make sense, there are unanswered mysteries and ambiguities that allow the show to retain some sense of intrigue and wonder no matter how many times you watch it, perpetually giving us something to think about or discuss.
Totally agree with you. If they had tied up the whole thing with a bow on top, having exhaustively explained every nook and cranny of the mythology, it would have left nothing to think about or discuss. And I doubt we would all still be debating it years later. Those ambiguities and interpretive qualities have given LOST a life far beyond its series finale.
You're a legend, dude! Thanks so much for this series (and all the smaller videos over the last 2 years that built up to this). You've definitely renewed my love for LOST and reminded me why it captivated me so much as a kid nearly 20 years ago lol. This show is so special to me, and I'm so happy that creators like you are willing to put in the work to show exactly why so many people feel that way. Can't wait for what the future holds, but for now -- let's just celebrate how amazing this series has been. Cheers!
If and a VERY BIG IF this RUclipsr is hired to make a soft reboot of this amazing franchise I would TOTALLY be tuning in to watch. The angle of reintroducing Walt, Aaron and Jeon into the story as grown adults is a GENIOUS move. Please let this man link up with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and pitch this fabulous idea. I think they would be very intrigued.
I would happily take on the challenge but there are better placed writers in the business who would get a bite at the apple long before I'd ever get the chance to make my pitch. It's a dream job scenario but, alas, will likely remain a dream. Thank you for the encouragement and support though! You've given me an ego boost lol.
I echo these comments. You clearly have love and passion for the source material. Any new writer coming to the show would be hard pressed to match your passion and the deep understanding that you have of the mythology and the show itself. If they ever tried to revisit Lost it would be a tragedy if you weren’t involved tbh.
I had the same feeling watching this video as I did watching the finale in 2010. Happy but a tinge of sadness also. But overall glad I watched it and experienced it. Its nice to know that there are still people out there who love and fondly remember the show. Thank you so much for all your hard work on this video series and the channel in general. Namaste!!
I had not seen anything of Lost until after the 5th season came out, my brother and partner at the time had seen it all. So I watched the pilot and suddenly two weeks had passed and I'd watched almost 4 seasons of it. I remember giing to buy season 5 on DVD to watch that too. I miss Lost. I never minded the ending. Thank you for making these videos, it helped me reconnect, not just with Lost, but also to a younger version of myself. Thank you.
I always thought that there was a parallel worlds thing going on. Walt reads a comic book with polar bears, and there are polar bears. Charlie wants heroin, and there's a planefull of it. Hurley wants food, and there's a hatchload of it. And the bears, the heroin and the food all arrive with a plausible "backstory". Cooper was kidnapped, but only because John wanted him there.
Another fantastic video! The only thing I can't stand about the finale is the fact that they cut to a commercial right as the final fight between Jack and the Man in Black began.
@lissa8197 yes! I honestly don't expect most people to notice that but you're exactly right! That punch would have been so perfect as the first strike if it wasn't interrupted!
31:10 The fact that it has to be explained that they weren't 'dead the whole time' is a clear sign of the level of attention and comprehension that the general viewer has. Christian even explains it IN the actual episode! I'm afraid that these days it's even worse; people seem to lack the capacity or patience to understand moderately complex plots. Seriously, I can't get it. It's sad that one of the greatest TV shows ever was bashed because of this. By the way, great work with this improved version of the series! I'm out of people to watch the show with for one more time haha, so... this made me feel sort of in the glorious days when we discussed the episodes week after week. Thank you!
Can I be honest with you? 😂 I've watched this series THREE TIMES.. and I believed that they were dead the whole time. 😅 It took me watching these videos to truly understand the depth of everything. There was just so much going on for me to really focus on everything and once and have it click. I'm not proud to admit that, but there you have it. Lol. ❤
Best Lost scene: After Jughead core was dropped into the Swan hole, we see Juliet hanging and grasping onto James Ford and he tells her not to let go. I cry with loads of tears at their amazing love. Love that matured over 3 years in the Dharma Initiative. Love that was not interrupted by a selfish Benjamin Linus, a crazy Kate Austin, nor a lost soul Jack Shephard.
Great work from start to finish. Impressive how you put all of this together. Feels like I watched the show again, but in a handful of hours and with a cheat sheet. Although it likely would be more for profit than for purpose, Lost could be a relatively easy series to reboot. There is no shortage of evil in the world and, apparently, numerous electromagnetic pockets.
I think you have the right idea in wanting to do a mini-series with a new cast. I mean the concept of "Hanso's" descendant coming in and being the big bad can allow all the lose ends regarding the "Dharma Initiative" to be sown up in particular it's origins, how the Hanso's reacted to it's purge, and what largely legacy if any is left to be explored.
I never noticed that the show began with an eye opening and ended with one closing. I also never clocked the multiple uses of opening an episode with an opening eye. Also, island=eye-land?
These videos MAKE A HARD WORK WEEK WORTH IT!!! I really think these videos are, IMHO, the MOST COMPREHENSIVE LOST BREAKDOWN series I've encountered, really STELLAR WORK!!!
Thanks for all the excellent videos. I like your idea for a limited new show that would be the proverbial toe in the island waters to see if it generates enough interest for additional stories. Whatever the cause for what’s ailing the island's water in this new series would surely be known by whoever ends up fixing it (assuming it’s ultimately fixed). That person could interact with someone while in their sideways who like Desmond, is able to communicate with people in the real world. That person could be Charlie, Desmond and Penny’s son. Since that Charlie would probably not have an instinctual need to write stuff on his fingers and hands like his namesake, he could probably communicate his message with more context than "Not Penny's Boat".
My theory has always been that the island is actually Gygia and Mother is Calypso. In the old myth, Calypso won't let Odysseus leave the island and offers him immortality if he stays to protect the island. He stares out at the ocean and she sits and weaves on her loom. In some versions, Odysseus actually gives her two children before Athena forces Calyspo to let him leave. Odysseus is trapped on the island and wants desperately to get on a boat and return to his home island of Ithica and his wife Penelope. Desmond also wants to get into his boat and return to his home island of England and his wife, Penelope... If they want to go full Greek Myth, the island could have been the spot where Zeus cast the titans into Tartarus. And the island 'cork' is the seal that keeps the primordial forces locked away. Maybe thats why time shifts when they mess with it... Cronos is down there (I know, doesn't quit fit as Chronos is time). Corfu could also be good fit as it has mythological ties as well as being the site of many different structures for different ages, but as it's currently inhabited it would be a bit awkward...
I first watched Lost when it came out and my brother and I have been fans every since. I think I can say it is part of our lives. It only goes deeper every time you watch it and the more one lives. Thank you for this channel, don’t stop the great work you are doing.
This is just incredible work and your research and knowledge of the show is absolutely first rate. I haven't had this much fun analysing lost since back in the day when I'd excitedly head over to The Fuselage forums after each episode to read through all the ideas and theories. Thanks for all your work on this.
Thank you. You explained the series well and in great detail. I originally hated especially the third season, but for me the quality of Lost fell hard after the second, but your analyses let me understand and love Lost as a whole. I wanna rewatch the series again
It’s comments like this that bring me much satisfaction and validation. If my videos can encourage anyone to reassess the show in the positive or to go back for another watch then I feel like I’ve done my job 🙏 The show holds up very well upon rewatches. I hope my videos help to enrich the narrative for you.
Dude - you are brilliant. Every time I'm like "but no I still ... what about.... um actually...." like 10 min later it's fully addressed, contextualized, and clarified. Absolutely cohesive and amazing. Your mini series ideas are sooo good too. I was one who really liked Lost when it came out but thought the ending was so bad I stopped watching all TV. I just went back and rewatched it all like a month ago and here we are with an AMAZING explained series that just came out too! What a "coincidence" ;) This show is undoubtably amazing and I was totally wrong to ever think otherwise. Absolutely sub'd and watching your other vids now, along with a full series rewatch. Thank you so much !
Thank you so much for the kind words of praise. It honestly means a lot to me. I made these videos for people just like yourself, to clarify and/or enrich the narrative of the show. And if these videos actually help to improve or even redeem the overall direction of the story for people then I couldn’t ask for anything more than that! So I really love reading this kind of feedback. 🙏
I found your channel on the 20th anniversary. I've been a fan since the original airing. I've seen this series several times and still learned a lot. Amazing work, thanks for sharing
Another amazing video man! The "What became of Hurly, Ben etc." Chapter actually hits on an amazing point that I can shed some semi-official light on. I went to one of the LOST Orchestra concerts in LA back in 2018 and got to met & take a pic with Damon after. I was the last person in line before the Q&A got cut off, so Damon asked me what I was gonna ask. Someone shot down my outrigger question prior, so the only thing I could think of was "What happened to Jack's body after he died?" And he laughed like "what, you think he's just rotting there right now?" Basically, he said "I'd like to think that Rose & Bernard was led to him by Vincent and gave him a proper burial." I also asked if there would be another new Smoke Monster as Jack because Jack died similar to Man in Black, but Damon said "No." lol
Ah that’s amazing! I think you asked two very good questions right there. Something different to the usual ones he probably gets asked. It’s nice to know that he validates the whole “no new smoke monster” thing, which I have explained in a couple of videos that it was no longer possible to do. Thank you for sharing! 🙏
Your analysis always give me this warm feeling inside after watching. Lost meant so much to me and I love that it still means a lot to others also. Keep up the good work!
- I imagine Hurley went out of his way to give that damn DriveShaft ring to Aaron. - Ji-Yeon is presumably the main shareholder in Paik Industries. I wonder if she one day will want find where her parents conceived her, and also died. Similar to Charlotte's life-long goal to find where she grew up. - Clementine has plenty of money as Sawyers' prison winnings were placed in a bank account in her name. - As Ben is going around shutting up shop (in the prologue), he'll meet characters such as that butcher (in S5) who held John's coffin, telling them Dharma is no more. He'll have one last shady trick to make sure Lapidus plane stays under the radar, or lawyers to dismiss Kates complete disregard of her trial conditions. - Walt finally receives payment after Hurley lost in that game in S1(?) - I think losing Jack will be too much for Kate. Losing Aaron will be incompressible. So I believe she will continue to play a big tole in his life with Claire, and Claires' mom. - Des, Penny & Charlie will live a secluded life in the countryside, away from microwaves, alarm clocks, and computers. Just a bottle of McCutchin Whiskey. Penny is already wealthy, but presumably will inherit her fathers' estate after he is presumed dead? Edit: You just mentioned some of these later in the video😂
You've hit the nail on the head. I remember watching the final episode with my mum and she assumed thst they were dead the whole time. I tried explaining to her that was not the case multiple times but it was like talking to a brick wall. It still annoys me when people mention this in conversation - lost deserves more than that
I can't really put in words how thankful I am right now! Lost was already a ... nay THE perfect Show for me and your videos made it somehow even more perfect. I know there is no such thing as "More perfect" but i can't explain it otherwise! And I will come back here everytime I rewatch Lost in the future and view your Videos as official Bonus material that every fan of the show should watch!
Thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot to me 🙏 I’m so pleased that the videos have helped to enrich the show for you. Dude, I know I run the risk of constantly repeating myself in each of your videos, but I just gotta give you mega props on this one. You wrapped up your documentary series of deep dives perfectly. Talking about the future and what might have been for the survivors is not something I thought about much after the show ended, but you gave me such deep insight that I find it hard to ignore now. Up until your pitch for what could be a continuation of the show, I was on the camp that this should absolutely be left alone. But that idea you had about Jin and Sun's daughter and Claire's son was just so tremendously good, I would absolutely watch that. In fact, I would accept no less - that idea was just spot-on. You're completely right that the show should be set after the events of the original series. On another note, the way you ended this video was brilliant. It reminded me yet again of why I fell in love with the show in the first place - letting go of your past, looking ahead towards your future, and finding people to connect with in the present. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a big tear in the last couple of minutes of this video. It was beautifully done. Your narration, along with the music and scenes from the show, summarized everything up beautifully. Like the show itself, you have successfully made this grown ass man cry. Thanks yet again for the love you put into your breakdowns and I look forward to watching the other videos in your channel. I promise to try to keep a lid on the comments as well, haha. Stay Lost. 🛩️🏝️
I couldn't ask for a better comment than this! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me. It was incredibly heartening and validating to read them. Feel free to comment as much as you like. The more interactions, the better! I was hoping that the ending of this video would stir up some emotions amongst the fans, so I'm extra pleased to hear about it hitting the spot for you. 🙏
It’s taken me a while to get through this whole retrospective/analysis/explained but it has been so worth it! As a long time fan you have truly enriched my perspective on a show I’ve loved for almost 20 years. Your ideas for the sequel are very good, and while I agree the show is a complete work, it’s something which could be done very well if the right people were interested. Thank you for this and what you do for the show’s fan base. Namaste!
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108All of Your LOST Videos have been Amazing. You have shined a Bright Light on Everything. Explaining Everything with such great details. Did You Work for the Show? Were You involved in this Amazing Series? I believe it could have went on for at least 2-3 more Seasons. I never heard of LOST. Until my wife got me to start watching it. This was in Season 4. I had to find the earlier seasons through a friend to catch up on everything. I used to wish I could be on that Island. I love the landscape. Was a perfect Location for a Perfect Show.
I am thinking that the sideways portion of the story is Jack's hopes and dreams, flashing in front of his eyes. Moments before he dies he sees the Ajira plane and smiles and as he dies, instead of flashbacks, he gets flashforwards of what could have been in a perfect world
@LostExplained - thank you for doing the good work. This show absolutely changed my life and I cannot thank you enough for the work you're doing to help the masses understand. Two ideas I've had for additional Lost: 1.) A Max/Streaming show that is technically a reboot - but the idea is... All those ideas/character arcs/events that had to be cut for one reason or another (for example: the character of Mr. Echo and the plans for him, etc...) and all the script changes (all the curse words and whatnot that had to be cut out for network TV) can be restored, along with a couple tweaks to the story, would allow a brand new cast to tell a familiar story, that is and of itself it's own thing. Or 2.) A Game of Thrones style drama taking place in the far future - however, the supernatural aspects are front and center, as the time period is a far flung future - we see the players on the island as an ancient culture, but it's actually the last vestiges of humanity who have adopted a part pre-historic part medieval aesthetic who support Jacob/Man in Black leaders, who it turns out, are the actual embodiments of good and evil vying for control of the island before the cosmos itself destroys the planet via some cosmic mechanism (like the collision of Andromeda and the Milky way)... Whoever controls the island and it's light when that universe ending happens controls the ultimate fate of the flash sideways reality, and more importantly, the nature of the next reality that will begin in the last one's wake. (Smash cut to LOST accompanied by that echoing, metallic sound) 🙂
I was able to watch all of LOST with my wife earlier this year. I had watched it when it aired and several times since then and she never saw it because her parents insist that it’s a terrible show with no resolution. She was skeptical at first, but as soon as we hit the ending of “Walkabout” she was totally on board and loved it the whole way through. Such a criminally underrated show that will forever carry an unfair label perpetuated by people who haven’t even seen it.
Thanks man, this is GOLD. Now everytime I rewatch the show, I'll be including your videos. As I said before, they should be included in some special edition. I like your voice, but It would also be great the have the cast narrate each video (with your script), as a form of they paying homage to you.
Hell at this point the man in black was probably that damn frog that kept Sawyer awake that one episode. Speaking of the man in black is probably the most tragic character as his whole existance is literaly to just be the antagonist to the island. He didn't even get a name and was just doomed to be a smoke monster because something something the island did shit. The island due to all the time travel basically had to directly or indirectly goad him into doing bad stuff to then be punished just so that the island would have something to fight against and wheter he knew it or not everything he did just perpetuated the island and doomed him. Witch is of course fitting as both the island and the man in black ultimately caused their own misery the island by creating the man in black in the first place and the man in black by doing his regular dickery that eventually killed him. Hell even Keamy and Cooper at least got names and got to enjoy their evil deeds while the man in black was basically just stuck playing a unvinable game with his bro for 2000 years give or take. No matter what he tried to fight against his own faith it would ultimately just doom him anyway. No wonder the guy was angry and considering his and Jacobs position they where some of the only people capable of realising the futility of their situation. In the series either the man in black is just on some truly amazing cope and denial about his position or he has acepted his place and just decided to be a complete dick about it. Or hell maybe he actually didn't know.
I rewatched this video after watching the two newer ones about the show runners. I've mentioned this previously, but I really love what you have done with this channel. Each watch sparks new ideas on what could be. For example: What if the MIB had a second loophole Jacob never knew about? The black cloud was able to store backups of its consciousness and memories. Not wanting to create copies of himself that might challenge him, he used it only as a failsafe at the end incase his battle with Jacob’s replacement ended bad (which it did). While standing beside Clair at the dock after the submarine sank, he implanted a copy of himself into her (his 3 years alone with her on the island conditioned her for this). Kate and Jack soon after kill the MIB but his consciousness escaped the island in the physical form of Clair. Unknown to him, Mother’s consciousness was also backed up in the cloud and it too was implanted into Clair. Once the plane was off the island and Jack had restarted the source, Mother took over and gave the MIB the time out he so richly deserved. Mother’s years of isolation scarred her deeply, which caused her to make poor decisions while raising her two boys. She observed and learned much while riding shotgun in the MIB’s cloud and used that knowledge wisely while Clair raised Aaron. Clair connects with Eloise and together they use the Lamppost to fix everything not only in the Lost universe, but any universe where people are forced to endure commercial television.
Thank you 🙏 Really pleased to hear you’ve enjoyed these videos. I’ve started an episode guide for LOST so the journey will continue on an episode by episode basis. Still lots more to come! LOST Episode Guide ruclips.net/p/PL5iTj9psbPrNFZaiwhulGTzxdWG5qSeEe
You've done really amazing work. Part of me wants to watch the show again, but for some reason I have a really strong emotional connection with it and it's difficult to watch it casually and not feel those things. There's so much there about loss, cooperation, love, purpose etc that I'm not ready to revisit in myself. I appreciate being able to get the boiled down version from you to wet my beak a bit before I feel prepared to dive in. I've always said LOST was my favorite show and people just didn't understand the ending. I thought it was absolutely perfect.
Hey man. I very recently finished LOST and found your channel. It has really helped me understand a lot of the mysteries and unanswered questions I had. I, just like you, absolutely love the show. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll be releasing a new season any time soon hahaha. So I'm wondering what you are planning to do with this channel now that you've covered pretty much everything. I really appreciate your work, even 13 years after the show ended ✌️ PS: I think your Spin-off idea was brilliant 😂
Brilliant series, really well done and delivered. I've only had a few questions that I do not believe were answered through your videos, but always forget them or simply do not push for an answer. However @ 21:55 during early Season 1 we see the MIB as Christian in the shore. I understand the other time Jack sees him in the woods he breaks eye sight so can poof away. But how can he do so here, right in the middle of the beach. Maybe the answer is obvious and I am just dumb. Brilliant series mate rewatched a few times already.
The Man in Black could teleport around the snowglobe of The Island. We see him doing this in both smoke form (most clearly in S6 E4 'The Substitute' when he is searching the island for Sawyer) and in the form of dead people like Christian and Locke. So when Jack looks away, Fake Christian simply teleports back into the jungle. He is always jumping around the board.
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Yes mate, teleporting away was the only conclusion that I could imagine. The only issue I have is that Jack doesn't break eye contact from that ''vision'' of Christian (unless I remember wrong). So would he not see the process of teleportation the MIB does. Maybe this is a theory (for lack of a better word) of mine, but it seems to me the MIB does not like to use smokeys powers in front of people, whether teleporting or transforming into smokey itself. He always excuses himself to out of frame. Only here and for Michael (that I recall) on the freighter who was 100% dead anyway. So for him to do so so openly and so early seems out of character to me. I am sure I'm nitpicking as this was right at the beginning of the show. Just a scene with every re watch strikes me as odd. Appreciate the reply and don't forget. Stay LOST!
I would love a short animated movie sequel to LOST. I think a different medium like animation and a one-off story is the only thing that could justify a return to the story.
Your Theory of Everything series has been so fascinating, and it really helped me reevaluate certain scenes and bits of foreshadowing. It was amazing to see how much of the beginning fed into the finale. About the subject of a sequel, I completely agree that a complete reboot is not the way to go. However, there is a theory I’ve harbored for a while since the ending of the show, that could function as premise or plot detail for a sequel. One thing that bothered me was that the ‘Kwon’ candidate name was seemingly never crossed out, even though both Jin and Sun (the two options presented) fulfilled the same requirement of being parents that had gotten Kate’s name crossed out. This made me wonder: what if the ‘Kwon’ candidate actually turned out to be Ji Yeon? Throughout the series, she had no specific connections outlined that would suggest she would want to stay off island, considering her parents are now dead, and she might end up having a relationship with her grandfather similar to her mothers (a bit strained). Also, this would explain why Jacob touched both Jin and Sun. He was ensuring the candidate status of a child that had not been born yet by connecting with her parents. The one hole in this idea would be why Jacob considered her in the first place (could be explained as a fail safe if all other candidates failed against the MIB?). This could also give a purpose to her unique quality of being conceived on island after the pregnancy crisis, yet still being able to get off-island soon enough to survive. I don’t know, this is just a pretty cool concept in my opinion that’s been floating in the back of my mind for a while; I don’t know if any others share this theory. I really enjoyed the video, keep being awesome!
I believe this theory has floated around the fanbase before but you have articulated it very well. It's definitely a cool idea and can be a valid way of reading events. I've also read theories from people who believe that the "Littleton" name on the cave wall referred to Aaron and not Claire, which I suppose is a similar concept: the idea of there being a child candidate hidden in plain sight. The only reason why I don't personally subscribe to either theory is for plot reasons as it relates to the "stakes" of the final season. Having another secret candidate out there in the world -- who did not go back to The Island for the endgame with The Man in Black -- renders the struggle and fight over those final candidates somewhat inert. Think of it this way: if MiB had killed them all in the submarine blast, it wouldn't have ultimately mattered because Ji Yeon being alive in the outside world would have prevented him from leaving anyway. Therefore, all of our characters would have died for nothing in such a scenario. A candidate remaining alive off-island undermines the stakes of that final season and robs the on-island events of their importance, making that whole storyline fundamentally less crucial in the grand scheme. However, in my head canon, I like the idea that by Jacob touching both Jin and Sun at the same time, this is what set them on the path to conceiving Ji Yeon years later. And this "blessing" imbues their offspring with some latent protector-like abilities that Ji Yeon will discover later in life. Something which I'm sure could be explored in that spin-off sequel, if it ever comes to pass. Regardless of my own nitpicky feelings over the needs of the plot, I really do love the "Ji Yeon was the real candidate" theory you put forward. I feel the same way about David Shepherd being Jack and Kate's real son. I know it wasn't the intention of the writers for that to be the case, but it's such a lovely thought that it's hard not to be drawn to the idea. So, I don't see any reason why you can't run with that theory if it enriches the show more on rewatches.
Once again, another great video! The Theory of Everything series (well, this channel as a whole) is a remarkable one, serving as a perfect companion piece to this magnificent show and further enhances the viewing experience of it. I commend the research you put into this project, and am even happier to know there’s more in store. 🙂 Some highlights in this one are how the flash sideways essentially served as a literal representation of the magic box. It isn’t a viewpoint I considered at all, and now that I think about it, it certainly makes sense considering Christian’s words; “This is the place you all *made* together so that you could find one another.” It also makes sense given the nature and ultimate purpose of the realm. The section on possible sequel/spin-off series brought up one of the more interesting ideas I’ve also considered before, that being a prequel that takes place during the Egyptian era, or any of the ancient civilizations really. Seeing how they ended up in their own faction wars which ultimately resulted in half of them on an exodus and the other half killed would be an interesting thing to explore and adapt, given how it’s the most ambiguous period of time in the series. Another idea I’ve had in a similar light is an anthology series that could explore the construction of the Temple over the course of many different periods. As we see, the Temple has touches of many different cultures, thus serving as a (somewhat) testament to Jacob’s view on humanity and how, in the right circumstances, people of different backgrounds and different world views can still unite for a cause. I would have to agree, however, that these projects would be better off if they primarily used actors of appropriate ethnic backgrounds, in addition to the native language best suited to the times. Tangentially, that was one my personal gripes with the casting of Jacob and the MIB, plus Across the Sea also being primarily in English with only the slightest Latin early on didn’t sit entirely too right with me. I still nonetheless think the episode has plenty of merit and stands on its own, plus I’d be remiss to not acknowledge Pellegrino and Welliver giving their characters their own fire. On a somewhat related note, my partner and I recently finished showing a friend of ours the series, as we watched the ending last week. He quite enjoyed it, praising both the ending itself, and the series as a whole, even bringing up then how he doesn’t understand the show’s negative reputation in the public’s eye. Was quite cathartic to say the least, and I was really glad to know he enjoyed it. It was also quite funny how the discussion on the whole thing had to be postponed a few minutes so I could have time to emotionally recover LMAO, I was a sniffling mess (like usual, every time I watch that damned episode). I went ahead and linked your channel as one of the best resources for further LOST engagement. Thanks again for all you do Mr. Hatch! I really look forward to the episode by episode breakdowns coming next! 🙂 Have a happy holidays and a great new year!
Thank you for the kind words and support! It means a great deal. 🙏 It's also wonderful to hear that you have converted a friend to LOST. I'm always trying to get people I know to give it a whirl. I absolutely agree with your point about Jacob and MiB speaking American English too. As much as I love Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver’s performances, I always felt like the showrunners should have cast two actors who could speak in Latin and looked like they could be of Latin-Roman ancestry. By making them American, it breaks the illusion a little bit. The show was willing to have subtitled sequences in different languages for a long while but it did get a little lazy with that as the years went on. I have mixed feelings about the casting of those actors and how their scenes are presented. I think they would have had more mystique and greater impact if played by two relatively unknown actors. I do understand why they went with this creative choice so the actors that they wanted to cast didn't have to phonetically learn lines in another language. But it was a missed opportunity to make them feel genuinely ancient and of another time and place. I'm grateful that what we got was as great as it was, but there are always details that could have made the experience that much more enriching. If I could go back in time and weave some of those ideas into the fabric of the story, I would make Jacob and MiB speak Latin in their scenes together. I'd also throw in a few additional episodes to the final season order as well, to add to the story rather than subtract: An Ilana-centric episode with flashbacks that cover her history with Jacob and The Island (and a scene that would close the outrigger loop once and for all). I always felt she should have had a more honourable death, maybe at the hands of the Man in Black rather than how the show unceremoniously dealt with her. And that could happen in her own episode. A Claire-centric episode that focuses on her and shows us flashbacks as to what happened to her between Season Four and Six, allowing room to explore how the Man in Black and his infection operates. Their relationship unfolding with him as Christian would have been fascinating. An episode that brings back Walt! He should have been on the submarine with Desmond, brought back by Widmore, and a player in the endgame. The on-island story could have seen him be the one to commune with Ghost Michael and resolve that relationship, so Michael could move on and they could both be in the church at the end, while Walt's flashbacks could show us how he ended up in Santa Rosa before Widmore busted him out. Then a Widmore-centric episode that fits together the final missing pieces of his backstory, particularly in regards to his relationship with Penny and how she came to find out about The Island; the meeting Widmore had with Jacob; and Widmore's change of heart/new purpose. I feel like just four episodes like this could have solved a lot of the complaints that people had about some narrative dead-ends and blindspots in the final season. I imagine if the writers could do it all over again, they would iron out those creases.
Oh yes, I definitely agree on many points. Ilana is 100% the thing I’m least satisfied with in the final season. If necessary to kill her character, it could have been a lot more dignified. Though I’m of the opinion that her death wasn’t really necessary at all, I would have preferred her to have carried out through the end. I think a Claire episode in season 6 would have benefited the show as well. The one you proposed, comprising flashbacks of her three years alone with the Man in Black, could have very well served as a twisted reflection of ‘Maternity Leave’ in season 2, while she was under the influence of Ethan (drugs in this case, aha). She was delirious and stoned with Ethan, whereas with the MIB she’s fully conscious but operating under his ambiguous “enthrallment” if you will. This would also go in line with S6’s whole reflection theme and visual motif, with Claire viewing herself through the lens of who she’s become after her descent, and this could have easily been an opportunity to call back to season 1; to both Richard Malkin’s warnings and her nightmares/visions of having blood on her hands. Not that that last bit would have been *completely* necessary because it’s implied well enough through events, but either way I think it could still work. Another point, if not for a flashback, I think a flash sideways narrative could have been an interesting focal point of her episode. Plot wise, perhaps they could have developed her story further beyond Kate’s sideways plot, retread her conflict with Thomas, Richard Malkin, her mother and/or aunt too. Any of those characters I feel had great potential to revisit on her end. Regarding Walt, I’d also have liked to see that play out. Resolving his early role with the events on the Island would have been cathartic on its own, but I can only imagine how intriguing and emotional a Michael and Walt sideways plot could have been. We’d see a different take on their relationship, beginning with flight 815, though I suppose him being much older in the sideways would certainly break the illusion of it being a reset. However this hypothetical could be resolved, I can see an intense emotional awakening scene in which Michael acknowledges Walt having grown so much, given he died before ever seeing his son grow.
Here's my pitch for a possible sequel or spinoff. One way to combine all the great ideas laid out in your video is an anthology series similar to Black Mirror. There would be 6-10 episodes, exploring vastly different settings and time periods, each ranging anywhere from 40-90 minutes, however long it takes to tell the respective stories in the best possible way. Disney+, where that show would inevitably air, has already demonstrated they are comfortable with varying episode lenghts. So one episode could feature the first people on the island, subtitles and everything. There would be an egyptian episode, maybe a 1940s US army episode. Present day would feature your Aaron/Ji Yeon pitch and one episode would see Hurley passing the torch to Walt at the end of his training. The one episode I would love to see most of all however would be about Radzinsky. I really like the notion you put forth in one of your videos, that Radzinsky manning the Swan is some sort of pennance, his way of dealing with his guilt over the incident. So Eric Lange can reprise his role as an aged, 1980s Radzinsky and this way we could return to our beloved Swan, tie up some loose ends and please all the Dharma Lore Lovers, like myself.
You know what? I LOVE this idea! A LOST anthology series could cover so much ground, bring us new storylines, resolve some old ones, and still feel totally fresh conceptually. We could get a bit of everything. And I feel like it would be a cool way to reintroduce The Island and its concepts to new audiences without needing to bring too much baggage because every episode is a different story that takes place on the same weird, mysterious island just in different eras. The Island would be the constant, so to speak. And for those wanting more stories about this place to tie it all together, they can seek out LOST the original series to spend more time on The Island. I demand that you pitch this to ABC and Bad Robot immediately, sir!
Love your videos! Really enjoying binging them. Just an opinion on the horse, I think it’s definitely the Smoke Monster as in a season 6 episode, where Kate comes to get Claire in the Temple pit, Kate jumps in, Smoke Monster flies overhead and you can see a horse in the Smoke. Thank you for these videos, as someone who watched when it originally aired and literally obsessed over it, I’m surprised that I’m still learning new things from your content. Also, my small Lost claim to fame is that I’m on the complete collection box set, during the fan segment, Planet Lost I think it was called? I’m the only Irish person 😅
The sequel should be about the children of Team Island: Sawyer's daughter, Jin and Sun's daughter, Walt and Aaron. They would discover another island untouched by Dharma with new mysteries!
Thank you for the series of videos you really helped me understand lost, I use to watch every episode week by week with my mum through the years of it on TV, great work on the videos 👌🏻
WOW! I've watched LOST all the way through 8 times. I remember when it was airing each week and being scared of the end credits theme, my sister and I would try and scare each other after each episode as the credits rolled. Anyway! This was an AWESOME series - having seen the show so many times (idk maybe 8 isn't a lot to some super fans but come on) I thought i knew the story and the metaphors and the meaning behind it all pretty well. BUT after watching through this series, I have a wayyyy more thorough understanding of so many aspects of the story/lore. Each episode answered questions I never even thought to ask! Very great arguments, I like the format these video essays, recognizing theories and proving/disproving them. Very fun to watch/listen through these. Now it's time for LOST 9.0 🙂
I have not yet done a geographical analysis. But there are various fan maps available online that have been compiled by different users, they estimate the locations of all of the major landmarks and the approximate distances between them.
I just finished lost last week, i started watching when it first came out but then never made it to the second season. I felt sad when it ended, I had a close friend who loved lost, and he talked about it alot. We chatted about it sometimes and I'd ask about what happened with this and that. but he'd never spoil it for me or reveal the twists. Knowing one day watch it through. He took his own life 10 years ago and I thought about him at the end. It's a nice idea to think we see all those people again. I hope we do, then we can chat about lost. Thanks for the explained videos, they were a good watch and I enjoyed them :)
I need to touch that grass so bad! 😆
Ya’ll get me a few ounces of it?
I just sit and rest it until I’m sick, if I go out and touch it.
People are dumb. It's that simple.
That’s very kind of you to say. Thank you 🙏
What's strange is that multiple times I've calmly explained how everyone was NOT dead the whole time to people with that misconception, and they refused to be corrected and even seemed to have a hostile tone as they insisted everyone WAS dead and that makes the show terrible, etc.
So thank you!:)
To me it's kinda funny that some people claim the series should have ended after season 4 because to me personally the last 2 seasons were so necessary to tie everything in and make the show feel finished and "round".
Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words! I really appreciate it 🙏
Rewatching the series after so many years, because of you!
Never let anyone tell you what you like and don't like.
The only people who think they “they were dead the whole time” are these kind of people who watched GOT in a bar and screamed on every cut
This is the channel that taught me EVERYTHING about Lost. Bravo sir
Thank you so much for a lovely message! 🙏 My plan is to keep making videos by launching an episode guide to go through the series episode by episode.
Richard ,ben,Jacob and the mib are still on the island with the others
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108A VERY WELL DESERVED EGO BOOST. I can promise you that! ❤
And when they came back from commercial they completely ignored the Superman punch! 😭😭
@lissa8197 yes! I honestly don't expect most people to notice that but you're exactly right! That punch would have been so perfect as the first strike if it wasn't interrupted!
Haha I remember that
Man, that ending montage and sign-off really choked me up 🥲🥲🥲 Beautiful closer to a magnificent video series. You gone done LOST proud brotha.
Another brilliant video my friend. That ending had me ready to cry and to start the whole show all over again
Lol. ❤
Best Lost scene:
After Jughead core was dropped into the Swan hole, we see Juliet hanging and grasping onto James Ford and he tells her not to let go. I cry with loads of tears at their amazing love. Love that matured over 3 years in the Dharma Initiative. Love that was not interrupted by a selfish Benjamin Linus, a crazy Kate Austin, nor a lost soul Jack Shephard.
I also found their love story the most genuine and moving
"Kiss me."
"You got it, Blondie."
😭
Great work from start to finish. Impressive how you put all of this together. Feels like I watched the show again, but in a handful of hours and with a cheat sheet.
Although it likely would be more for profit than for purpose, Lost could be a relatively easy series to reboot. There is no shortage of evil in the world and, apparently, numerous electromagnetic pockets.
I think you have the right idea in wanting to do a mini-series with a new cast. I mean the concept of "Hanso's" descendant coming in and being the big bad can allow all the lose ends regarding the "Dharma Initiative" to be sown up in particular it's origins, how the Hanso's reacted to it's purge, and what largely legacy if any is left to be explored.
the ending words of your video series made me tear up. For some reason this means so much to me, Lost is so much more than just a show to me
I never put the appendix and the stab together. Great Scott! Awesome work my bro!
I never noticed that the show began with an eye opening and ended with one closing. I also never clocked the multiple uses of opening an episode with an opening eye.
Also, island=eye-land?
"The EyeLand" is actually the name of one of the very first tracks on Michael Giacchino's soundtrack for the first season!
Thank you for making this series. I could listen to this for days. LOST was a very special show, and I'm glad to see it get this treatment.
I liked the bit about the sideways as magic box. They way the interactions between characters was explained was just very nice
These videos MAKE A HARD WORK WEEK WORTH IT!!! I really think these videos are, IMHO, the MOST COMPREHENSIVE LOST BREAKDOWN series I've encountered, really STELLAR WORK!!!
Perfect summation of the series in the outro
This whole series has been outstanding, and this final installment was no exception. I loved the profound, beautiful final words. Thank you.
So happy your channel exists! Thanks for all the content
Your idea for the sequel series is genuinely amazing. I'd love to see you fully flesh that out in a video series!
Beautiful work. Your music and editing are especially wonderful to behold. 👏
This whole video was awesome. Good job man. I loved it
Dude - you are brilliant.
Damon's patience with that absolute bell end from Vulture in that interview is a sight to behold lol
Someone shot down my outrigger question prior, so the only thing I could think of was "What happened to Jack's body after he died?" And he laughed like "what, you think he's just rotting there right now?" Basically, he said "I'd like to think that Rose & Bernard was led to him by Vincent and gave him a proper burial."
I also asked if there would be another new Smoke Monster as Jack because Jack died similar to Man in Black, but Damon said "No." lol
- Walt finally receives payment after Hurley lost in that game in S1(?)
- I think losing Jack will be too much for Kate.
It still annoys me when people mention this in conversation - lost deserves more than that
I clicked at just the right time. These videos are well-reasoned, well-researched and very, very well done! Thank you!
Ohhhhh!! I wasn't expecting another part...... These have been amazing and an insightful Look into Lost. I'm very happy with this series your doing!
Don’t forget to also check out my episode guide, in which I shall be going through the series episode by episode. It’s a long term project where I hope to cover every conceivable aspect of LOST:

Namaste!
Sixth and final. It’s been emotional. Almost like the show is ending all over again 😢
I’ll be launching an episode guide after this. So as one video series ends, another one begins 🙏 Like Mother said: “Life. Death. Rebirth.”
Hell yeah more lost
I am thinking that the sideways portion of the story is Jack's hopes and dreams, flashing in front of his eyes. Moments before he dies he sees the Ajira plane and smiles and as he dies, instead of flashbacks, he gets flashforwards of what could have been in a perfect world
@LostExplained - thank you for doing the good work. This show absolutely changed my life and I cannot thank you enough for the work you're doing to help the masses understand.
Two ideas I've had for additional Lost:
1.) A Max/Streaming show that is technically a reboot - but the idea is...
Or
2.) A Game of Thrones style drama taking place in the far future - however, the supernatural aspects are front and center, as the time period is a far flung future - we see the players on the island as an ancient culture, but it's actually the last vestiges of humanity who have adopted a part pre-historic part medieval aesthetic who support Jacob/Man in Black leaders, who it turns out, are the actual embodiments of good and evil vying for control of the island before the cosmos itself destroys the planet via some cosmic mechanism (like the collision of Andromeda and the Milky way)... Whoever controls the island and it's light when that universe ending happens controls the ultimate fate of the flash sideways reality, and more importantly, the nature of the next reality that will begin in the last one's wake.
(Smash cut to LOST accompanied by that echoing, metallic sound)
🙂
Richard goes in for a job interview “Can you explain this gap in your resume?”
“Uhhhhh…”
He took a long sabbatical! 😆
This is the only video essay series I can just sit down and watch instead of putting it on the background while doing something else. Great job!
Back with another banger! Love your videos as always
Great writing mate, I will be rewatching from part one.
You are so good at explaining all things LOST.
I wish you’d do the leftovers NGL
As long as they don’t do to Lost what they did to Doctor Who. Good lord.
This series has been amazing. I’m excited and yet sad that there is only one more video left. Great job lostie
Thank you 🙏 Really pleased to hear you’ve enjoyed these videos. I’ve started an episode guide for LOST so the journey will continue on an episode by episode basis. Still lots more to come!

Im pretty sure you know were the island is. Fantastic channel that gives lost the credit it deserves. Thanks
I fucking loved when they told about the midicholrians .
I really appreciate your work, even 13 years after the show ended ✌️
PS: I think your Spin-off idea was brilliant 😂
Thanks for doing these vids. I'm still obsessed with Lost to this day.
you are AMAZINGGG thank you much for being so active and having these i can not thank you more
Brilliant series, really well done and delivered.
Stay LOST!
Thank you for your dedication in the excellent quality of production that are your videos.
YES! I had a feeling it was about that time. Thanks for the new video. Looking forward to it.
Once again, another great video! The Theory of Everything series (well, this channel as a whole) is a remarkable one, serving as a perfect companion piece to this magnificent show and further enhances the viewing experience of it. I commend the research you put into this project, and am even happier to know there’s more in store. 🙂
Some highlights in this one are how the flash sideways essentially served as a literal representation of the magic box.
I'd also throw in a few additional episodes to the final season order as well, to add to the story rather than subtract:
An Ilana-centric episode with flashbacks that cover her history with Jacob and The Island (and a scene that would close the outrigger loop once and for all).
Your videos are so enjoyable to listen to. Thank you for your amazing effort.
Incredible series of videos!
Thank you for creating them!
And thank you for watching! 🙏
Literally just now (as of 20 minutes ago) finished Lost for the second time, just to see a new lost explained video today
So exited for this new video!!
beatifull last minutes of the video, ty
YESSSSS love when I see that Lost Explained posted agian!!!
Just what I needed after watching this amazing show. Thank you!
The sequel should be about the children of Team Island:
Sawyer's daughter, Jin and Sun's daughter, Walt and Aaron.
Love your videos !
Have you done a video about the geography of the Island ? Like a map
I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. 🙏
I loved your spin off idea, great video btw!!
