The footage from the semi dashcam is even harder to watch. The force of the collision was enough to cause the adjacent semi to jackknife, cause the sideswiped sedan collided with another car, and cause the SUV to burst into flames on impact with the black sedan. The 33 year old wrong way driver was critically injured and was treated in intensive care before being arrested by Dallas police. He had multiple offenses of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and reckless driving

Yes, a wary driver could have noticed much sooner, but their view of the road ahead was impeded by outside-lane traffic prior to the collision. They had much less time to notice the perp than drivers in lanes to the right. Nobody expects this kind of problem coming toward them. Then again, we're advised to drive like we expect the unexpected. It's saved me many times, and I stay out of the inside lane except to pass.

The driver was under the influence. Most wrong-way drivers are impaired and are unaware that they're actually driving the wrong way. But there are ways to avoid a collision with a wrong-way driver. One is to use extra caution at night since there is a higher chance of intoxicated drivers at night. Especially avoid the left lane at night. This was in the day, but as seen in the video, the intoxicated driver was in the left lane. They think that they're driving on the right so that's why most wrong-way crashes occur in the left lane. There has been some improvements on highways in recent years that can lower the risk of a wrong-way collision. Some jurisdictions have installed special signs that light up when someone is going against oncoming traffic. Said system can also send signals to a VMS sign to alert drivers going the right way that someone has entered the freeway going the wrong way.
I know I'm late to the thread, but Tier 3 explained it pretty well. Most people that do go the wrong way, are usually if not always on drugs or under the influence of alcohol.
