This video is about how to install a small electric water heater. I did however err and should not have used PEX pipe right at the connection to the tank. It should be 18" from the connection. So when you hook up yours, use copper pipe within the first 18" of the tank. This is the Ariston GL4 S. It has a 4-gallon tank that is heated electrically with an element. It does have the standard anode rod that regular water heaters have so there is some maintenance required but the frequency of changing the rod depends on the condition of water in your area. [at least that is what I have been told.] The SharkBite fittings are a bit more expensive but they attach so fast and are quickly removable.

Reading the comments I don't think many people understand what this unit is. It's a small reservoir of electrically heated water conveniently located typically near a sink (or shower) for occasional low volume use (in this case 4 gallons or less). (For a shower you might want to go to the 7 gallon unit depending on how long your showers are.) At 120v and 12 amps (this unit) will NOT provide a CONTINUOUS flow of hot water even at a low flow rate - it's not designed to do that. Connected to a cold water supply after the 4 gallons (or 7) in the heated tank are used up it will go cold and will not be able to heat the water fast enough after that. Do not confuse this product with a high voltage, high current tankless water heater. Typically you would need a 240v circuit with a 30 or 40 Amp service for continuous hot water flow.
I hooked mine to the hot water supply so that you get instant hot water, then when you use up the 4 gallons the hot water from main tank starts passes through it , you might have a slight lag but you never have to heat 4 gallons .
It's amazing how it can hang on the wall like that.

Reviews are not all that great; I had a licensed plumber install a new unit under my house four yrs. ago. Hot water quit recently and when I went to check I was shocked to see the entire top of my water heater solid rust. I never saw the shark-bits items before since it was professionally installed....I dug up my receipt and the shark-bite installation kit was listed separately on my bill so I looked them up to see what they are all about and read some customer reviews. There is a constant almost imperceptible drip from between the center of the S.B hardware. Luckily, as per their (Shark Bite's) warranty, if it was installed by a licensed plumber they say they stand behind damages resulting from failure of their innovation. My new w.h. is barely four years old and the entire top is flaking rust. I drained it and opened the service panels and there are streaks of rust on the inside as well. I would advise to keep an eye on it
What size were the fittings on the top could it be fed from a water hose as a portable just to take to a camp site

I am purchasing a 7 gal Artison used for $65. I was observing how your unit is keeping up with your needs since it’s a 4 gal. Will this be sufficient for showers for 2 people ? and hand washing?

I have a separate electric shower when doesn't run from this tank, so I use the hot water from this tank in my kitchen and bathroom sink 😊

I simply threaded a washer supply hose in the relief valve and directed it into a drain PVC pipe, in case the valve ever activated. Works fine, just lift up on the spring-loaded handle to test your connection.

Sweat on a couple couple male adapters and two braided flex lines and your done. This is over done with a big price tag. The PEX tool alone is about 100 bucks and most home owners wouldn’t even go this far. They would be showing this vid to the Home Depot guy laughing his ass off.
I put in over 1500' of pex and the tool is not $100.
You can rent the tool for about $10. a day. I did buy the too.
Pex is not that expensive $45. a 50' roll. and well worth it.
It doesn't freeze easy either... I lived in the mountains of NM

great install man, i bought me a bosch 2.5 gallon electric heater and i cannot figure out for the life of me which connections i need. I live here in new york city, and i cant afford to do renovation in my bathroom to install a water filter for my shower to get rid of those chemicals ( im very sensative to chlorine), i figured i might just install a filter to my sink and use that filtered water to quickly shower, problem was who wants to only use cold filtered water so i needed me a how water filter system and i decided to buy me a Woder WD-S-8K-DC Water Filtration System for chlorine, and what i was planning to do was add that chlorine filter between my cold water pipe, then have it feed the 2.5 gallon heater, then i would connect the hot water back to the hot water faucet. Problem is im so confused with which connections i need to buy, and i also wanted to was have a switch to turn on and off the filter cold and hot water when not needed. Since i cannot afford to break my walls and redo the piping to have my shower water filtered, figured this plan might work and i would use this system to fill a bucket and then use a portable shower head to suck the filtered water out the bucket to quickly shower myself.
Yes this is crazy, gotta use my faucet sink to fill a bucket and use a portable electric shower head pump to take showers. But i cannot figure out any other alternatives, and this is the cheapest route. I tried using those shower head chlorine filters but they don't really work. Still smell the chlorine steam, and almost every time i take a shower in the winter here in new york i feel like i have been lobotomized from those nasty chemicals. Wish i could figure out how to do this setup. Went to home depot to try and figure out which connections and hoses to buy, i got so overwhelmed, I think i might just have to get a plumber to do this for me. Probably gunna cost me an arm and a leg. Ughhhh
all i know is that the cold water pipe that feeds the water is a 3/8ths male head. The filter came with a male and female which should work, problem is the bosch tank heater has half inch male connections, and i have no clue what those adapters are called to connect the 3/8ths male from the filter, to the half inch male connection. Plus im so confused because ima need to get me a switch in order to disable the filtered hot water and cold water that would run to the heater, straight to the faucet. Ughhh so confused LOL. btw the bosch water heater looks almost the same as the one you currently installed, just im using a 2.5 gallon one.
also i have no clue how ima install that pressure release value. figured i can just buy a hose and release the pressure ever 3 months into my toilet LOL, but looks like i might have to connect it to the drain pipe. :\
bring the whole thing to home depot and have them show you and hook up the correct parts from their store. They've helped me many times!

@@DGSantaFe have you seen the propane water heaters you can hook up to a regular propane tank? Lots of videos on youtube I have been looking at a lot of different ideas...also coleman makes one that looks good for something portable.
@@girlonlaptop that is my next and final option towards getting hot water on this camper. I'd been through 3 water heaters already, the 1st one was an electric and gas rv water heater that I couldn't find anyone to install it, $$ waisted, 2nd it was a small tankless water heater off amazon lasted 5 days n it fried, 3rd home depot Bosch 1 min of hot water n an hour of trying to figure out wth was going on. So I'll buy an LP portable then hang it outside and run some male hoses to the plumbing of this camper. Hopefully it'll work, tired of freezing cold showers n dealing w it!
@D G Don't think you understand how these work. It's only two and a half gallons of hot water, then you have to wait for it to heat up again. It's not like a tankless heater with continuous hot water flow. Even with a tankless, you have to consider your starting water temp and flow rate. Not every region can use them because it's just to cold. Even with a 6 gallon one of these, on highest temp mixed with cold water also, you'd have to take a super fast shower, turning off the water in between soaping up and rinsing off.
Where do you connect main water source?
My main hot water heater is so far from my kitchen that I have to waste approx 4 gallons of water before it gets hot. I want to install my 4 gallon Bosch water heaterin the hot water line running directly into it so that by the time the Bosch is running out of hot water the main hot water line has backed it up. Does this make sense or would you recommend another method for instant hot water at my kitchen sink and dishwasher?
did you figure it out? I have seen the videos where they install something similar directly under the sink for instant hot water.
I appreciate the video man! I have some odd questions, you'd be an incredible help if you can provide some insight to them. I'm building a 'Portable' hand washing sink for a private Tattoo studio with my business partner because the health regulations state you can't pass a doorway to wash your hands where we live, and it'd be cheaper to build one instead of running the water line to the space. We have a Bosch 4 Gallon Tronic 3000T water heater that looks a lot like yours, we were wondering if it's realistic to set up a system of jugs and pumps of clean and grey water to get a concession sink system going? My original inclination was when we bought the heater (we were linked to it from a portable hand washing station tutorial that was very vague) that the red was the hot water 'out' and the blue was the cool water 'out' and you filled the heater unit with water through an opening else where, as if the heater was made to be a portable water jug/heater but it isn't.
I realize now from your video the blue is the 'in.' We have 2 Sureflo water pumps, if we did a system where one pump pulled water from a clean jug, then hit a 'T' bracket where one pipe went to the 'cool' water tap of the sink and the other to the blue 'in' tap of the water heater. Then from the red 'out' of the water heater there was another pump and then connected to the hot water tap of the sink that would drain into a grey water jug, does it sound plausible? Things we should be aware about? Cheers man, seriously appreciate the time!
Wow I must admit this is something I have never had to think about. Got to love regulations huh? It may be better to ask the manufacturer of the heater you will be using. But if I had to guess I would think you only would need one pump that pushes the cold water to the cold tap and the IN port on the water heater. There may be something I am missing. I would not go off my input alone.

What options are available to run the drain from the pressure relief valve into a waste drain? The unit not installed anywhere near an outside wall is not an option and we in Florida do not have basements. Also, please show an install where things like expansion tanks, backflow prevention valves and pressure regulators are needed.

Adam I do have a serious question. I was given a Bosch 4 gal almost like this, same principal . My question could you install this in an RV camper. This is not an instant water heater so the hot water can be used up pretty quick right. Or in it an instant water heater????
I'm thinking of just adding the four Bosch gallon heater to the primary one in the rv to get a few gallons more I have not yet found any 120v thankless heater that has the capability of heating it a lot of 120v require wiring to a breaker n my rv don't have slots for it everything is 240v for homes for it to work on homes only

+ghostz61987 Are you asking if this can be used from the city water line and not first going through another water heater? Yes. In fact I can't see why anyone would use water coming out of another water heater to pump into another one.

is there a spalsh cover for these under the sink units? I have an inspector telling me that I need a splash cover over the unit to prevent electrical shock if water spills over from the sink above.

Adam, thanks for this video. We just got a HOTER brand water heater for the sink. It is a small one. Are you familiar with this one? We bought it from Ebay. We tried this one because it is not so expensive at $73. Do you have a video of the electrical connection for this model. It is a 110 volts.
+Freddy Panes 110 is just a regular wall socket in the US. Sorry I have not installed that one but it looks like it is a tankless correct? Those are just as easy to install but be certain that you run the water through the unit BEFORE you turn it on. I know that in some heaters if you don't do that step you will burn out the heating element very quickly.

I would like to share this with your many followers that when my 40 gallon water tank died, last Dec. the tank alone is in the ball park of $500 which I dont have. Plus, we have been asking why are we "cooking 40 gallons all the time and there are just 3 of us in the house? So I got an 8L Natural Gas Tankless for $108 on Ebay and installed it. We get hot water all the time although it doesnt have the "punch" or the "gush" that a pressurized tank can give. SO I told my son: that is just 8L and we are testing if it is applicable. Next time we will get a RINNAI now that I know how to install it. and move the 8L into my garage sink. A million thanks to you. You are helpful.

I just bought the same unit, but a different brand. They look identical. The thing I’m wondering about is this pressure release valve. Are we supposed to do anything with it? Are we supposed to put a pipe drain in it? Are we supposed to release pressure periodically? I have reviewed the manual and searched online and cannot find anything on it. Is it automatic and we don’t have to worry about it?

I see why he did it. I want to hard pipe but since my unit died I am installing a 50l tank. The copper goes along well then a 45 to the old tank. my new tank will have to mount above the down 45s so I may just use some braided lines from tank to lines. Pvc, pex copper all need a few 45s and joints to turn upward. shark is ok but these things are 7-10 A piece. one of those mount it and ponder time vs cost. Usually, my luck, I choose braided line and nobody has any lines to fit so after buying adapters and half a day running around I could have just have spent 5 on some pvc with adapters and elbows . snip glue, tighten, done.
I think you missed a crucial step which is the non return valve to the cold supply inlet, that's also for electrolitics
There has to be a simpler method that is just to much work ..why not just get flexible hoses and hook up instead of pvc ?
I don't see any connection to the drain for the safety release T/P valve!
I've watched 4 videos like this so far. None of them hook up the discharge from the pressure relief valve. And they don't talk about electrical requirements. I'd like to know if they require a dedicated circuit and 20 amp. This one looked like it was plugged into a 20 amp circuit.

I am building a tiny home, do you think that this will meet the water needs for my wife and myself? We will be living, eating, showering, and laundry on 10 gallons of water per day. I wondered mostly about a decent hot water shower. No hot water for laundry or anything else. Maybe a little at the sink for dishes. We are using a 320 ft shipping container conversion. Let me know if you think this is enough.
Wallace Hunter Wow! I hope you film it when you are done to share your experience with everyone. I really can't say if it will suit your needs. It does get the water cranking hot. You would be mixing it with cold water when you shower so you will be able to run much more water than what the tank holds, but enough for two morning showers? I don't know. Even if you do run low on hot water, it wont take long to heat up more. I would try and contact the manufacturer and find out more info. This is not the only brand either, so there are options. I wonder how much water an average shower uses. It would depend on the time, water pressure, and shower head. Is that 10 gallons for the both of you? That must be a fast shower! At 10 gallons a day, I bet you could pull it off. If I had to guess, I would say yes, I think it will work out for you.

Those connecting pipes in the hot water heater are black steel. Without dialectic connections you are asking for corrosion, correct?
Also, why the heck do ALL of the manufacturers of these small hot water heaters use black steel pipe? If anyone knows of a manufacturer that doesn't use black steel please reply.
18" of copper from the heater is according to whom and why?
according to manufacturer in the manual. PVC cannot handle high temps so my guess is that length is to allow it to cool off a little? You can use Pex since Pex can handle up to 200 F, but you probably still need to go from copper to Pex.

I have a small but important issue to resolve. I need to heat up 1.6 gallons plus the amount of the smallest hwh I can buy. Can u direct me where I can get the hwh urs was 4 gallon n an even smaller one would work for me otherwise 4 gallon I guess.
Check Amazon or plumbing supply stores. I have been using a Bosch water heater (2.5 gallon) and also an ecosmart 2.5 gallon and they've both worked consistently well. The Bosch actually supplies enough water for a bathroom sink and kitchen sink, used sparingly. It takes about 20 minutes to heat the water so after the 2.5 gallons or so runs out you have to wait for it to reheat the tank, in other words, it will NOT supply a continuous supply of hot water.
How do you turn it on
Nice video; however, after installing the same heater in a similar manner, I found out that PEX should not be used within 18 inches of a water heater. There should be at lease 18 inches of copper before connecting to the PEX lines. I had only 6" of copper between the heater and the PEX, and the PEX felt warm to the touch even when the water had not been run for a while. I imagine that this constant source of heat may degrade the PEX connection over time.
My Name Very good information! Thank you for sharing. Very helpful. I will make a note if it in the video. I should have used a Corrugated Copper Flex Pipe. I have a new homes here in Utah with the PEX all the way to the tank so I assumed it was ok. I'll look into it a bit more but I'm sure you are right.
AdamDIY After some more research, I found that the real issue is that PEX has a maximum tolerance of 180F at a pressure of 100 PSI. That said, I believe the Ariston GL4S can only go up to 145F, so we may not experience any problems with the installation. I'm going to leave mine as is, with only 6" of copper and see how it performs over time. Here's a link to the PEX Installation Handbook. I did the same with pex on an install in a rv/food truck and got popped for a code violation. Got to have 18 inches of metal flex before the pex. Was told by the inspector that they will fail it every time. It was a real bummer as there was literally not enough space to have that 18 inch of metal flex pipe. @@AdamDIY

If it gets hot enough to degrade the Pex prematurely, there’s a bigger problem at hand.
What is the temperature at the faucet?
Good question. I don't have that info for you but it is blistering hot. It's been a while since I installed it but I recall it being just as hot as a regular gas home water heater. So hot that you world receive severe burns if you turned the temp up all the way.
There's got to be another method. The average DYI home owner will not have all if any of the fancy tools you do. Nor will they want to spend the money to buy them, on a one time job.
RamZ as far as "specialty" tools, you literally need a $30 crimper and a $5 cutter...much cheaper than hundreds for a plumber

You used about 3X more pipe dope than you need. Much less messy if you just lightly coat the threads.

That's a good question, I've never had to do that. My Bosch unit doesn't have a bottom drain as far as I know. I imagine either disconnect and turn it over to empty it out or add a non toxic antifreeze and then flush well before reusing.
You can't put any kind of antifreeze not even RV antifreeze in your water lines for your freshwater you'll kill anything that drinks it pink antifreeze is not for freshwater holding tanks there's only 4 black and gray water holding tanks
I have this water heater (it was gifted to me) and I want to hook up a hose to it. To use it to fill up my outdoor bathtub... do you think this would still work? I would need to get another hose to connect it to the tub.
These small tank, 120volt plug-in water heaters only delivery their capacity of hot water, once thats gone it may take another 20 minutes or so to fully heat another tank. They don't have a large enough heating element to provide a constant stream of hot water.
What do you do with the pressure relief valve? I have everything hooked the same as the video, but I'm not sure what I have to do with the valve.
depending on the building codes where you live it may have to be discharged to the drain or outside in specific manner. this is a critical safety aspect that most these video's do not address

Actually PEX is not a brand name; it’s an accronym for cross-linked polyethylene. PEX brand names are Apollo, Uponor, sharkbite, etc

Yes you can but you should know there isn't a lot of hot water you need to do it faster if your water heater is 2 or 4 gallons . If you have the 7 gallons that will be enough for one person.

Your not using the crimp tool correctly. You shouldn't be able to press the crimp gauge all the way into the fitting. It's supposed to stop at the indent. All your connections are over crimped. Hopefully they don't fail.

Question: I'm a bit confused: I bought one of these, the 2.5 gallon model. My intention is to put it under the sink in the kitchen because it takes at least 3 minutes running the water before it turns hot. I assume I want to hook the HOT water line into this unit so that by the time I run through the 2.5 gallons of preheated water hot water from the water heater in the garage will be running through the unit. Is this correct?
I have one and the cold water is connected to it. I run into the problem of running out of hot water. Wished the hot water was hooked up.
