  • My friends, the Schutzenpanzer Puma is probably the most advanced IFV in the world right now. Rye Field Model has released a beautiful kit of this armored vehicle, and Voyager Model has two nice sets of photo-etched details for it. Although I didn't even know this vehicle existed before I saw the box-art, I was captivated by it. Little did I know it would become a very difficult project!

    A small correcton: Puma passed its combat readiness test with the Puma VJTF/S1 "upgrade" in 2020/2021.
    The cameras are thermal imagers and color cameras, the problem in the initial production Pumas (first batch) is, that highly durable, heat and frost resistant (mil spec) flat touch screens with high resolution were not availible (not developed yet) at the start of production, so they took black and white screens wich were availible.
    The screens are replaced on the VJTF/S1 upgrade with color screens.

    Wow, an ultramodern model, yet another large step outside your comfort zone. What’s next, a submarine? 😊
    Seriously, the amount of surface detail is quite amazing. I mean, yeah, it’s basically a brick, but it has details at so many different size levels that it almost looks like a 3D fractal.
    I’m reminded of the first few Bolo stories that I read when they were first published (yes, I’m old). Based on what I knew of tanks (from building models) in those days I imagined Bolos as gigantic simple smooth slabs of iodine colored alloy with tubular Hellbores sticking out, with no particular surface detail. Now I realize that they would have to be covered in various functional greeblies just like the Puma is.
    So if it’s okay with you, I’m going to pretend that the kit actually represents an early experimental Mark of Bolo.

    i once saw a picture of a puma with an "urban camoflage", it has a lot of pallets attached to it sides and it looked great! from the things you said in the video i have the assumption that you made exactly that. i am right?

  • @cupcakewrx3476
    @cupcakewrx3476 Год назад +15

    Just watched the first minute and allready feel the need to put some things in the right light.
    1. Puma is not an APC (battlefield taxi like the M113 or MTLB) but an IFV.
    2. It's not a prototype anymore. Germany has the first lots in active service. There are constant upgrades to make them fit NATO standards (Puma VJTF) and constant technical problems but this comes as troops are using them regularly.

    • @JJ-M
      @JJ-M Год назад +4

      Pretty fair to miss those, Puma's are fairly low in number for active service (so far, that's changing right now), and Martin's a historical modeler so the nuance of what makes an APC an APC versus an IFV is a bit far gone from the tigers and T-34s that is the usual fair. Isn't even truly something that is gotten right more often than it's gotten wrong, tbqh.

    • @cupcakewrx3476
      @cupcakewrx3476 Год назад +2

      @@JJ-M No offence. just wanted to put this a little more in the right direction. But again a little correction in term s of numbers. As of now 350 of them have been delivered. Given the size of the Bundeswehr now, this is neither just a low number nor insignifiant. Also this is not changing atm, as you pointed out. A second batch of 50 Pumas was initially ordered but the order was halted, when some problems occured which in hindsight have shown to be largely caused by soldiers not being qualified enough to handle equiment as suffisticated as the Puma.

    • @JJ-M
      @JJ-M Год назад

      @@cupcakewrx3476 My apologies, a bit used to seeing the US force structure numbers in modern terms, and, ah, must have missed the halting of the order, happens.
      Appreciate the correction though! Don't want to leave anyone with incorrect impressions of it, even if it's relatively unlikely.

    • @zhufortheimpaler4041
      @zhufortheimpaler4041 Год назад +1

      @@JJ-M you have to consider that the US military is vastly larger than the Bundeswehr.
      Just the Army is double the size of the whole german armed forces.
      This is due to the CFE Treaty (Conventional Forces in Europe) wich drasticly limited heavy weapon stocks of european armed forces (like upper limits for NATO MBT Fleets etc) but also due to the extra paragraph in the 2+4 Treaty (german reunificaton) for wich the british and polish governments pushed, wich limits the total size of the german military to 370k Men including reservists from 1994 onwards.
      Both treaties crippled german defense capabilities and reduced it from the second largest NATO Military behind the USA in 1991 (with several hundret thousand men more than the next largest ones - possibly up to 750k active serving soldiers) to a below average european military in 1998.

    Uncle Night Shift, those rubber mats (from 1;50 min) are actually tiny metal bars to prevent penetration of the main armor from shaped charges from cluster bombs. They may have a rubber mat underneath, but the protruding bars are metal. The same armor is on the Panzehaubize 2000.
    One more thing, Puma is in active service of the Bundeswehr in the total number of about 350 units. And it is constantly being upgraded, it's like Panzer 4 and it's versions, ausf A, B, C and so on. You can say, that Puma is something like ausf B, or Mk 2.
    I hope I helped. :)

    • @space3112
      @space3112 Год назад +1

      lead is not as dangerous as you might think! in certain countries lead pipes were common for decades and no major issues came from it. What is far more dangerous than solid lead is lead particles and compounds like lead dust when you file or grind it. or lead based paint when it chips.

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 Год назад

      Lead wire as used by modelers is perfectly safe.
      Lead *compounds* like lead acetate (which was used in house paint and tastes sweet) are dangerous because when ingested, the body can’t excrete them so they accumulate and slowly poison you.
      As used in models, lead is covered in primer and paint and cannot subsequently form toxic compounds.
      Politicians do not grasp subtleties like that though, which is why we get so much official disinformation leading to the bans on lead projectiles used by hunters and lead based solder.

      I saw photos of two Pumas in an urban exercise, with their front flaps being held up by a number of pallets and random, junk-looking stuff. I thought for sure that this would be the inspiration, as it _does_ look very striking. However, these used a new urban camoflage scheme somewhat reminiscend of the British Berlin camo, so that can't be it. Kinda sad, actually, as it not only looked quite rad, but would add some variation to any usual, quite green-looking model collection.

I'd love to see someone who is an expert modeler in the scale model environment do their take on something more fantastical like that.

    Good job on the pe. I started building 1/16 and hate working with smaller pe pieces… I can only image the complexity of this, especially on this scale. You’re a better man than I haha

    "the issue is the cameras" oh look, almost like the pros don't outweigh the cons...
    EDIT: to stop the gun from going too far down, now and the olden m' days, they just slapped a stop lock. even today, giant gears and what not are used.

    I recommend KOKI soldering paste. It solders quickly and leaves a smooth surface. There is practically no need to sand afterwards.

    I’m building a RFM kit. They are way overengineered for your average builder. It totally takes the joy out of the hobby.

    I think that special armour texture surfacer is an adaptation of what is used in cosmetic fingernail extension, so a base of acetone is put down and the filler (what is the filler, possibly granules of a resin?) is sprinkled over it to form something that can then be sanded down to make a strong fingernail extension.

    I built that Merkava because my hobby house was having a suspicious sale.....
    The kit was marked down so with the resin and photo etch it came out to the price on the box; funny coincidence

    I absolutely hate this style of tracks, the Takom 1/18 Wiesel has almost identical tracks I just finished them and I hated assembling them because if you want them to work like I did you have to be extremely careful with the cement then even if you are they aren’t afraid of breaking on you

    If you have a professional soldering iron with a super fine tip, put your soldering heat at 350 degree and use lead containing soldering. it'll make soldering so much easier.

    When you say "so they say", I think "so to speak" is better. I can see how they might translate similarly but they have subtley different meanings beyond literally. Not a criticism just an interest in language and how it is used.

    Fabulous job as always really looking forward to you painting this. Would it help if you managed to do a few smaller models quickly and got a few videos ahead? So when you wanted / need time away you’ve still got content to release and you could relax and enjoy your time?
