I wish they'd made a timeline for eurorack instead. It's got so many more algorithms and is much cheaper in price. Seems like a way better deal. Or at least they could have given you all of the timelines algorithms included.
Very thoughtful and informative review. There is a Magneto in my future but the biggest question on my mind is how did you get your hands on a Neutron?
I am a sound designer , tester and music tech consultant... eyes peeled in my videos you are likely to spot all manor of rare and beautiful gems that I have worked on .
I love Strymon for guiltar, but this sounds almost inconceivably bad for eurorack. I guess it sounds like reverb and delay but it somehow manages to sound dry. I'll take Big Sky and no modulation any day.
Paul Wilkinson to each their own. I don’t see the similarity between this and a big sky at all though. The reverb in this is a tape echo spring reverb. Think re-201. very different sort of sound than something like a shimmer or hall reverb.
Hey Ken, I've noticed you had some gear up for sale in the Facebook marketplace and you live in my area. I don't want to reveal the location in case you are uncomfortable with that. I am curious if you know of any stores in the area that sell modular gear or just have a solid selection of synths on hand? Most of the Guitar Centers in the area seem pretty lack luster in the synth market. Feel free to PM if you aren't comfortable giving information that would disclose your general location publicly. Thanks in advanced for any recommendations you might have!
Thanks for your opinion Ken! Haven’t got the Magneto yet, but the Rainmaker is one of my all time favorite delays/granular synths ever! It really surprises me that you didn’t care for it. There is just soooo much you can get out of it. Anyway, lol I would love to see some patch battles between you and your friends!
Nathan Shores rainmaker is a very cool module but at the end of the day it felt like programming a vst. Just a sterile vibe about it. It can do some amazing things.
Hey Ken, I can understand that. A lot of people have moved to modular to get away from that programming vibe in the software, I personally have a different reason why I had got into it. I love modules like the OC and Control Forge and a lot of others. That said, I don’t always want to spend time reasoning out a sound or patch, sometimes it’s nice to have that instant gratification of plug and play. I guess I side with both ways of working, just depends on the project and my mood. Thanks for all your great content and keep it coming man!
its not even so much the planning. most of my patches I would say I work out in my head first. its more a vibe and inspiration. Raiinmaker was great for what it is. But I couldnt justify holding onto it knowing I could come up with the same inspiration using ES8 and Blocks. it just didnt feel so free flowing like Magneto does. granted they are very different beasts. again its all about preference. maybe one day I will buy a rainmaker again though.
You managed to do a 10-minute review on a tape-voiced delay without questioning the terminology. You said at the top it was digital. Good. But strymon uses terminology like ‘transport’ and ‘heads’ which heavily imply a magnetic tape device. There is no pathway to understanding how it is VIRTUAL heads, VIRTUAL transport (although transport is intuitive). But how is this deliberate marketing confusion not worthy of calling them out?
Jed Gould completely disagree with you. Not sure if you are trolling or just maybe have trouble wrapping your head around understanding emulation? Heads for example directly relate to where the virtual tape (lets call it tape, why? Because it’s more than simply a sample buffer as it has other emulated aspects such as eq, compression and how it responds to playback speed.) playback head is . This is extremely useful in both simplifying for ease of understanding and helping the user picture what happens in relation to playback timing divisions. So instead of calling them out, I’d rather embrace the terminology for what it is... by your logic any digital or virtual analog synth should not call its oscillators oscillators... i mean hell they aren’t oscillating and it’s just code right?!
I can't imagine the opening demo being useful for any of the gigs that ive played past or present.i mean its one thing to make dopey noises but not useful for gig work.
you seem chill as hell, the comments on this vid are brain dead tho. great content!
1:49 sounded like a movie
Can you engage the crinkle effect without delays engaged?

Why do you ask, are the Neutrons rare or something? Personally love mine, hours-killing machine, lol!

I’m looking for a cheaper alternative but I don’t know if the eventide stuff is as good.
Take a hard look at the happy needing fx aid. Really nice. Also the modbap modular per4mer does a create tape style echo

I think you Demonstrate an impressive lack of understanding of use cases outside your own. Well done.
