This content is quite slop in terms of it's quality, but I wanted to get the news out! Next video is gonna be a good one, it's about Chell's backstory, been working on it for the past few months. :) (also yes i know its a river i fucked up while writing the script sorry)
@TransferInProgress it's on Steam and is fan made I think it's called portal reloaded, but it's not got a release date, I wouldn't be surprised if it was stuck in development hell
@@quickhakkerportal reloaded is a portal 2 mod with a third time travel portal which released in 2021. A mod with a similar name, portal revolution is another portal 2 mod set between the 2 main games with its own story (similar to portal stories: mel and will release most likely before 2024) but portal: enrichment is a remake of the original portal which has made good progress but for the last few months has been lacking in any significant updates
Now that we know the location of the texture at the end of Portal, we can finally work toward figuring out where the hell that got that photograph of that big grey thing in the sky at the end of Portal 2
And don't forget we still don't know where they got that photograph of that big green and blue ball in space. And I mean, there's no way Jeep Barnett snuck onto a rocket ship just to snap a photo of that thing right? But then again... he *did* drive a couple miles for a picture of some trees once. He's proven that he's dedicated to his work...
Hello. Thats some nice detective work! No, I didn't take this photo. I think Jeremy Bennett put this scene together, so it may have been him. Kim Swift might remember.
Yeah, from just glancing at the picture I can see why you might think it's a lake. But then he kept calling it a lake while describing its river-like features, and then literally seeing that it's a river from satellite view. I don't think English is his first language, but he seems pretty fluent and I don't think there is any language that doesn't distinguish between lakes and rivers... it's quite strange.
just give geo guesser players even the slightest info on the surrounding of your secret lair, and they can find it. the US government should hire them to mark enemy cords
tbh it would probably be easier to just use an AI to match pixels from an image to the entire set of Google Street view and photosphere images. Which, I'm sure the government either has or is working on.
I recall a story where a group of 4chan users actually did call an arial attack on an afghan/iraqi airbase. This was about 2015-ish when Geoguesser was still a small community.
wow that's crazy... I went camping near a river earlier this year, and when I watched this video I thought that the river in the image looked familiar... it turns out that they are the same river!
So weird that driven past here without even realizing that it's the same texture I'd seen hundreds of times before. I never even questioned it. I should go back there now, knowing.
Gaben: take a photo of some random location for the ending of Portal Community: a good mystery for us to solve Same as with Minecraft's title screen and pack png
This is really nice. I am thankful this picture of a god damn background in a game is now finally found and can be visited. Hell if u do ever go there do make sure to record a video for us lol. Geo guesser players are crazy dawg.
That’s crazy. I grew up in WA and have traveled through stevens pass many times, that explains why the ending area in portal always felt oddly familiar to me
Im surprised no one just asked 4chan. They would have solved it a few days after the game released. They were the insane geoguessr players before geoguessr became popular
Pretty sure the appropriate photos... would largely be of a road. Which would be a bit... weird. You could stitch something together though. However... trees grow. Plus who knows what else may have changed besides. Still. The main issue is still that the continuation would mostly just be a road.
While this is great I can see this having a downside, hardcore portal fans might now visit that sight and not leave it as clean as when they got there, as tends to happen when an area gets more foot traffic and visitors. It’s such a beautiful spot too.
This reminds me of when they found the OG Minecraft panorama world, but instead of using better computing methods and stronger computers, all it took was a nerd who's really good at playing google maps the game. Mad respect
I love game development. A photo of a river can become the background to a secret research lab hidden way out in the forest, you just need to move it slightly down so the player can't see the river!
this took the minecraft seed and coordinates hunting like for the title screen to a whole new level, i still cannot process this. never thought it was even possible in the first place
Before you disclosed the location, I had a go looking at GMaps given your tips and observations. I was 12 miles south, had a hunch it would've been somewhere east of Seattle, given the terrain across the bay doesn't add up at all. I guess all those hours in Geoguessr are starting to pay off lol. Also, notive how Gold Bar is relatively close to a place called "Index"
@@zaiden2becausejustzaidenisused I would personally say after the black mesa incident, and either during or after the seven hour war (even in Portal 2 there's no evidence of the Combine ever finding Aperture so could be possible) My whole guess comes from a set of voicelines near the end of the GLaDOS fight where she says: "Are you trying to escape? Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here." "I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside." "All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was." "Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer." "Good job on that, by the way." BUT while looking it up, found that there's also the aperturescience.com stuff that makes an official timeline from valve: steamcommunity.com/app/400/discussions/0/412448158148233561
I go right past this place every time i go river rafting. When i first saw the full image, i thought, "Hey, this looks familiar." Glad to know my suspicions were correct. :)
I can immediately tell that that comes from the North Cascades, it just has that unmistakable vibe. Weird to think that I've been right near a piece of internet history before, multiple times, without even knowing it. Super underrated region.
WILD to think about. Steven's Pass is one of like five big roads that connect Western WA to Eastern WA through the Cascade mountains, and of them Steven's pass is probably the second most-travelled as it's the road going East from the areas just north of Seattle, where most people here outside of the city live. I've probably passed this exact spot plenty of times none the wiser. I wonder how much thought was put into this, or if someone snapped the image went "hey, well, that'd work really well" on their way camping or to Spokane or something and went from there.
I like how he frames Geoguesser players like how some stories frame psychics and magicians,as random people blessed with special gifts that didn't exist years prior
Fantasy - going to this location, re-photographing it, getting a wider panorama, stitching it together, and making a mod of Portal that’s just “okay, we fixed the texture cutoff” :D
I feel like they already had this picture from taking it in the past, as you said he enjoyed photography so it could have been that they decided this picture was good enough to use rather than going out and photographing that specific location for use in portal, why would you bother getting the river and the rocky beach areas in the picture of the background for essentially a parking lot? I'm thinking into this too much
I kinda like the idea that you can visit texture source locations, would make for a really cool hiking expedition. THEN take higher resolution pictures and put them back into the game!
Portal takes place in Michigan (if you ever played Portal 2 and seen the Cave Johnson level Easter eggs in the game). And everytime I finish this game, I always say “that forest does not look like it’s in Michigan”
Wow this is a great video! You pulled me in with that thumbnail, and the surprise helper twist was quite satisfying. I finished playing Portal 2 a while ago, and the game is now one of my favorites!
I remember 10 years ago i thought the ending scene of outside was really pretty and detailed. Looking at it now i can definitely see that it was just my crappy monitor making me think it was that way lol
Now somebody needs to take a new, higher resolution photograph so we can mod in a larger texture that's not cut off. Or maybe the original photo they took before they turned it into a texture is in one of the source code/asset leaks and we can just take that photo since it will match perfectly, and just change the clipping.
You gotta be kidding me!! I've been through this road many many times and never once realized! Portal is one of my favorite games and knowing I've been there is seriously amazing!! I could go there right now too!
