Outstanding MacDowell playing. Even many fine artists tend to ride roughshod over these pieces because of a perception they are simplistic. They are not; even the easiest, least "notey" MacDowell pieces require the kind of intense songfulness that Rachmaninoff brought to his recordings of miniatures like Saint-Saens' The Swan. Mr. Shields does just that; he nails the tender nuances here. My only gripe is that the too-close miking sometimes sabotages his carefully rendered dynamics.
Classical at its best , inspired by the sheer beauty of vast expanse of the nature. Peace. Only here.
