Oh my gosh, I can't even count how many people have asked me why I've been searching for dvds and blu rays. Other than the fact of not being able to watch everything I want on streaming services, there's just something about having the physical copy that feels better than scrolling a catalog

Dont forget that your enjoyment of these movies or TV shows is based on the signal from several other sources. If your signal gets lost, you lose your favorite movie until they re-establish the signal. Your enjoyment depends on others. That's no good

Liking your username. True confession, I have only seen the original trilogy. I have been watching every single extra and I am going to be doing a marathon of the Hobit movies with 3D and the Atmos sound from the 4K's. I don't care if they are not as good. I know I am going to love them. I cannot get enough of these Peter Jackson extras! The 4K's are DNR'd to death, but they still look so damn good! His dedication is admirable indeed.

Here in the UK there is a store called HMV which called in the receivers a couple of times in the last 10 years but now is back into making a profit because of vinyl over the last few years and also stocks massive blueray and 4k. My wife and I always pop into one of these shops to buy our 4k as we love browsing what offers they have and it helps support this wonderful company that's been going for over 100 years and keeps the staff in a job.

4K players are starting to sneak into the market on gaming consoles, as well. One reason the PS2 sold so well, recall, was because it played DVD's at a time when standalone DVD players were sometimes pricier than a PS2.
With 4K players now available on Series X and PS5, we may start seeing even more demand for 4K discs.

I appreciate the series of videos on the topic of physical media. For the last few years, I've amped up my DVD/Blu-ray purchases because films are disappearing. I think studios have made a big mistakes going all-in on streaming. Streaming is not a cash generator long term and the ransom TV approach, i.e.: you can only watch it on our platform approach, doesn't endear you to your customer basis. The VHS/video shop rental gave studios an added additional income stream and it's crazy that they are abandoning physical media after all these yrs.

As a hardcore collector of physical media, specifically 3D blu-rays, I am well acquainted with the struggle of the hunt, as 3D blu-rays are rarely released domestically, aren't usually available in stores and require importing expensive releases from all over the globe... If they get released at all. Which is why I have been imploring the home entertainment divisions of each major studio to implement "On demand" physical media publishing, which would maximize their own profits while providing collectors with what they want.

Last year I tracked down and purchased the US DVD box sets of the James Bond series. Why? The menus. The menu design is amazing. Call me crazy, but DVD menus wipe the floor with Blu Ray and 4K. Menu design was an art form. Sadly lost. Whether or not it’s something to do with the way Blu Ray players handle menus is a mystery. But DVD menus really set the mood for the movie. The best menu I’ve ever seen is for the collectors edition DVD of Chris Nolan’s “Memento” I had to print out a guide to navigate some of it. Ingenious.

This makes me think of when TV and cable became popular. The film industry started getting desperate. They started making fantastical films like Cleopatra just to draw audiences back to the theater. But these companies seem to be embracing these streaming services and throwing cinemas out the window. Its really f***ing sad. But we need to remember why we embraced VHS or DVD in the first place. It was far better to own your favourite films than rely on TV or cable companies.

The wife n I started buying dvd's n blurays probably 5 yrs ago and just started buying the 2for $10 deals whatever kinda deal was on at pharmacies or supermarkets and then we started getting into it more and started a catalogue and started buying new releases and searching out classics from my childhood and hers and now we have about 1200-1300 movies/blurays here at home. There's sumthing to be said about actually owning the physical property of dvd as opposed to digital. We've filled 2 7foot tall 5 level shelves and still have 2 6foot piles around our televisions so we need to buy another shelf or 2 just to store what we have.

I literally watched my Arrow copy of "Witness" last night. It looked gorgeous. All the various extras are excellent, as is the box art. The book has some of the best essays I've read included with a bluray in a while.
I also own Arrow's deluxe boxes of "Robocop", "Major Dundee", "Crash", "Legend", "True Romance", "The Wolf of Wall Street", and Lynch's "Dune". Of their slipcase releases I own dozens of discs, including the recently released "The Desperate Hours".
They do great work via their imprint "Arrow Academy" as well, which I also own many dozens of. Their Kieslowski box set is one of my favorites.
Powerhouse Indicator, Eureka, 88 Films, Warner Archive, Vinegar Syndrome, of course Criterion, and many other fine companies are keeping cinema alive in ways streaming cannot.
I own several thousands of blurays. I will not watch any film streaming unless there is absolutely no other way.
    Viva "physical media".

Censorship and manipulation like what they did with television is another reason to hold onto physical media. These companies can rewrite history so to speak. Once the content is written on a disc, it's there forever. But if they tweak a movie ever so slightly they stream, they could act like it's always been that way. They'll blame it all on BS like the Mandella effect. I don't want to give these companies that kind of power

I was born in the 80's and was taught to take care of my things so that I wouldn't have the need to buy them again. You know...save money...so with those teachings, I still have my first VCR (still works) with my favorite movies in VHS. I have a record player and a few vinyl records. I also have many DVD movies. For me if it is a movie that I really love, that I can watch a billion times without getting tire of it, I would buy the movie...but if it is a passing fad or a one time thing then I would rent or see it in the theaters. I am glad to see the new generation embracing old media...it is very fun to find your forever gem and use it years later. Those physical memories are priceless in my opinion.

I was heavy into DVD's in my time, don't know how many hundred, but several cabinets full. Now my younger brother grew up during blueray and is heavily into 4K, he doesn't have nearly as many movies, like maybe 30 4K movies, but I have to say man they are so much better. The 4K versions have much more behind the scenes, and one reason I bought DVD's back in the day is because of DVD extras such as commentary, interviews, how practical effects were made etc, I love all that stuff and 4K really elevates it. And the 4K disc sets usually come in elaborate and often beautiful collector style edition sets, with artwork and everything, looks beautiful.
I'm too poor to start a 4k collection, and my DVD's are just gathering dust as I just stream all movies instead. But you don't get all the extra's or 4K quality.

Just thought 4K discs were going to be it. Thought that was just going to be the new Blu-Ray. I have rented movies digitally but rarely bought it for digital download. I love physical media, DVD, Blu-Ray 4K Discs, and even yes record/vinyl. Makes me very mad Best Buy stopped having physical media. People go crazy for collector's editions. Me ? I'm a proud collector and agree with filmmaker Christopher Nolan when it comes to digital purchasing.
For the last 4 years I've been renting movies out from the library. They say movie rental stores are closed and there is only 1 Blockbuster left. Libraries still have physical media. Whatever I missed in the movies I rent on Blu-Ray from the library. I've been loving it :-) Just last year I finally got a Blu-Ray player, don't have a 4K player.
Like you said at the end, I do feel there will be a comeback for physical media just like vinyl. I will stay strong and keep my head up. Strong supporter of physical media, in my book, that's just the way to go.

This Video is wildly Wrong. He is Wrong about Everything he said.
Just so you know for the last 10 years the Best place to buy Physical Media has been online.
Retail Stores have stopped selling Physical Media because consumers do Not want to pay for overpriced Physical Media. So their sales amount dropped off.
Online Physical Media sales are a lot less expensive.
DVDs sales are currently a worldwide Multi-Billon dollar Industry so is Vinyl neither are Niche.
A Niche Market is a small market. Neither Vinyl or DVD sales are a small Market.
As far as 4K goes the Movie / TV Studios have never made a real effort to sell 4K Blu-rays.
They will produce / Make 20,000 New DVD titles every year, even more than that, while maybe releasing 200 new 4K titles in a year. For many years there have been only around 70 New 4K releases. That is Not putting any effort into 4K.
The only way for 4K prices to come down is volume manufacturing and sales.

I'm kind of happy that we're getting higher quality releases that are celebration I'm just going to have to budget one to two movies a month. Back in the DVD days I could afford to get 5 to 10 movies maybe 15 or 20 if I bought them used. I'm just going to have to scale back my collecting. But I own all the classics anyway. Some movies I don't even upgrade to. But I am really excited about the Conan movies. The Blu-rays were a big improvement audio wise. I value two things, quality and the ability to go back to it at any point.
Streaming is convenient but doesn’t offer best quality. (A 1080p Blu ray has a higher bit rate than a 4K streaming video file)
As so its value for money is in delivering these files in the smallest digital footprint possible.

There are a handful of 4K Bond films out there but I'd love for them to do the collection in 4K. They remastered the original negatives 10 years ago when they released the blu ray 50th anniversary boxset, so I imagine it wouldn't be as huge of a project

Certainly not 4K but DVD just might do it because to the general public it still looks very good and that's what counts, we still get the OAR and authentic color schemes for the most part (particularly older releases) none of the trendy uniformed smear that stuck-up revisionists throw at the titles these days and ultimately at us. Movies don't need to look overly new to be enjoyed by the public at large, especially vintage movies.

I think DVDs are done. Blu-ray only like 2 or $3 more. I also saw one of the boutique labels say their DVD titles going out of print.
Blu-ray will probably be the one that most people get. 4K for enthusiasts.

DVDs are a lot less expensive than Blu-rays.
You don't even understand that every year there are more than 20,000 New Titles released on DVDs compared to only 1,000 on Blu-ray and around 500 on 4K.
DVDs are the overwhelming choice of the Consumer.
Online, the best place to buy Physical Media. The AVERAGE price for a Blu-ray Movie is around $18.00 that includes New Releases that often cost $25.00 even more. New Movies on DVDs are typically $10.00 which is a lot less than the $25.00 you have to pay for the Blu-ray version.

@@LarryFleetwood8675 I mentioned something about Blu-ray to my wife last night and she looked at me really confused. Then she said "They still make those? I'd assumed that was just some gimmick they tried to push a long time ago and it never went anywhere." Now, in a way she is right. If you look at the sales numbers, DVD is STILL king. It way outsells both Blu-ray and 4k. Blu-ray came out way back in 2006 and the fact that it STILL hasn't overtaken DVD makes me think that it never will. The fact DVD still outsells these "better" formats even today makes me think it may actually (crazy to think) beat them in the long term.

I've been collecting these, and I love them. I hope the trend continues. I have collected physical media for decades just because I enjoy having physical copies. I have media all the way back to CED disc's with players for each format. Then again I'm old so I was around when these formats were cutting edge. That combined with having friends that worked at Suncoast and media play means it was easy to feed the addiction.

Laserdisc players and discs were incredibly expensive, even into the early days of DVD. Standard release Laserdiscs were $40-$50 in the early 1990s. That's well over $100 in today's money. Collecting 4K Blu Rays is much more accessible to the average person, especially since many already own a gaming system that can play the discs.

I still buy physical cd’s for bands that I really like because I just enjoy not having my stuff be reliant on a streaming service. And I do the same with blu rays of movies and shows that I really like, games too. I just hate how split up everything has become in this streaming era, plus I love having a bookshelf full of dvd’s, cd’s, games and books. Maybe I’m just weird but I will always go for physical if I can. My favorite physical release that I own right now is a nice James Bond blu ray box set that has everything from Dr. No to Spectre, I absolutely love it and the insane amount of special features. It was like $80 but I’d say it’s worth it because the Bond films are all over the place with streaming.

I chose the best of both worlds route. I started buying DVDs in 1999, and since then including Blu-Rays I have amassed somewhere around 1,200 movies and around 200 TV shows, and I’m still buying more every week from Thrift Stores now. What I started doing about 2 years ago was ripping them to an external storage drive, and added them all to a private media server (currently I’m using Plex). That way I can stream them from wherever and whenever I want, and can even download to my phone, iPad, or MacBook for offline viewing if I know I’m going somewhere that doesn’t have cellular or WiFi. It was actually because of Netflix losing “That ‘70s Show” that I started looking into doing it. I already had the show on DVD, and refused to pay Amazon’s outrageous price to “purchase” each season digitally.

That’s why I continue to buy physical media especially on Native 4K Blu-Ray Disc that won’t dip in quality due to a dip in Internet Streaming Connection due to a moment of Connectivity BS

I think part of the problem besides "convenience" is ignorance. People born after the 90's don't care or know anything about compression, bitrate, bit depth, codec, format and so on and so forth. All these people care about is pressing play and it's there on the screen even if streaming it uses only about 1/3 of the Blu-Ray disc bitrate. By analogy, streaming looks like an CBR 320 Kbit/s MP3 sold as "AUDIO-CD", people doesn't know the difference.

The Bond series is definitely something I would want to see in a format we can own and continue to use even if the IP owner goes bankrupt....also the tv show The West Wing....
One thing about 4k Ultra HD is that you can't play it on a modern PC; you have to have a processor from the gneration before 4k ultra HD came out. Because it needs a security feature from that generation of processor.
I have seen software that will strip the DRM from iTunes video....maybe we can get The West Wing via that and strip the DRM, then have it always available. It's fine to strip the DRM as long as you're not posting the stripped file online, only use it on your own PC. 🙂

Great video and very informative. I would only add this: BUY PLAYERS NOW. That is while they are still relatively affordable and available. I speak mainly of DVD and Blu Ray. Get three or four and keep in a cool, dry place before trying to find one later when your current player inevitably dies and all you can find is 4k or Blu Ray and most of your DVDs become the Beta-Max of the 21st century.

My guess is that many studio's don't want to sell their films on disk because it undermines their goal to migrate to streaming 100%. IMO this is purely about money, they make money from each DVD/Blueray/4k disk sold buy its a 1 time thing - they dont profit if you sell it on or loan it to a friend or family. With streaming they cut out any middle man and monetise each view you cannot share or sell a "stream" the only way for someone else to view is to also have a subscription. The revenue per watch is lower than a disk sale but its a constant over time.
