  • Before I started my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail I was told that due to my vegan diet and lifestyle I would struggle on trail, some even said I couldn't do it...but I did!! In this video I share with you my thoughts on nutrition and health, discuss what I ate on trail, where I loved to eat in towns and go through the remaining questions I have yet to answer all relating to food out on the PCT.

    Thank you for this, this is the first vegan hiking food video I found that wasn't relying on chips, pop tarts and Oreos 😂 I am vegan and I eat a lot of organic, raw food so Ive been a little worried about how I'm going to maintain my diet on the trail, I'm glad to see you were able to do it successfully!

    I love these videos because they stir up so many wonderful memories. I realize I still have some old uneaten trail food in the house so for lunch today I'm going to make Dal Aloo! It is a spicy Indian soup made from dehydrated refried beans, instant mashed potatoes, powdered onions and garlic, Madras curry powder and a bit of sriracha sauce. That's a combination I invented on the trail from the food I was carrying. It was very satisfying and had a lot of calories. Thanks for doing these videos, Mary.

    B-12 is ingested from the dirt that is on the food animals eat. If we ate veggies unwashed we would be more likely to intake ample amounts of B-12. The reason animal protein has B-12 is because it is contaminated with intestinal leakage during slaughter. I eat a Plant Based diet only. I supplement B-12 with Hydroxocobalamin type because it's naturally derived. You could eat dirt but I wouldn't recommend it! :)

    • @catherinedimarco2528
      @catherinedimarco2528 4 года назад

      Actually in a recent study 80% of meat eaters were also B12 deficient because we use so many chemicals on the foods animals eat. Yes, the B12 is actually from bacteria. Our ancestors ate dirty veggies and also got it from organisms in the water :D

    Thanks so much for making this! I haven't done a thru hike yet, but I do backpack and haven't had any problem staying pretty healthy on trail. It is a HUGE help to see how you did it on a long thru hike. I'm amazed by the total crap that most people put in their bodies (vegan and non-vegan alike; on trail and off!), and it seems obvious to me that Real Food is going to keep you healthier and stronger when doing something hard! :-)

    I haven't done a long thru hike, but even on my week on the LT last year I loved used "Amazing Grass with Antioxidants" in my water. It came in pouches,
    and I think it is a great way to get some greens, etc while on trail, and all of the greens are organic. I also ate organic fruit leather that didn't have added sugar. Lately I have found a product called "ZenB" bars that are made from organic veggies. I plan to bring these on my CO Trail hike this summer if I manage it and my LT section hike. Thanks so much for this video and for answering my question about the Tofurky :D I generally try to avoid gluten, but I think that might be an option for at least a few meals. I agree about listening to your body. I notice even very small changes in how I am feeling etc., and make sure to do something right away. Again, thanks so much for these videos. They can be helpful no matter what kind of backpacking trip someone is planning!

    Thank you so much for this video! You've shared a lot of good information that is helpful. I had been wondering how to incorporate peanut butter powder into a backpacking diet, and the lightbulb went on thanks to you--of course, morning oats mix! Also good tip about not trying to mix green powder into your water bottle but rather into your food. I agree, lunches are always the most challenging to figure out but cold-soaked beans and couscous sound like a practical and healthy option to supplement all the snack bars, nuts and dried fruits.

    Superb video Mary. So much great information, especially on the vitamins - I found that Magnesium helps me with leg cramps as well. I tried to be plant based for a month and actually quite like it but as I have a wheat allergy it was surprisingly difficult for me to combine being Gluten Free and Vegan when out and about. I love how excited you get talking about the things you are passionate about, it's so refreshing, honest and just always a pleasure to watch. Thank you :))))

      Thank you so much Rogue Life. Everyone always visits London but I'm not a city girl, if it is a city you are after I prefer Bath or York. Otherwise I would always recommend the Lake District or Yorkshire! The Cotswolds are very popular as is Cornwall and Devon.

    You did much better with your meals on trail than I thought would be possible. Your understanding of vitamins for the vegan was fantastic. I would second your recommendation for blood monitoring, especially for men who are supplementing with iron as too much iron can be harmful for men.
    When are we going to see episode two of Cooking Vegan with Mary and Derek?

      Thank you Scott, that means a lot. I'm glad you mentioned about the fact that too much iron can also be harmful.

Derek is doing great thank you so much for asking and Lily the cat is good too - apart from the fact its too cold for her to go outside at the moment. She goes to the door and steps outside, but runs straight back in again - she's a softy🤣

    Burrito = "Little burro" -- i.e., little donkey. Yep, they are supposed to be big. You did really well finding good and nutritious food on the trail, although I do remember a couple of rough spots on the videos. I recall your first encounter (I think) with ramen noodles ("Oriental" flavor), and that never showed up again. Ramen is so light, and pretty filling, so I do pack it for short trips, but I would not want to make a thru-hike on a steady diet of it.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад

      Yes there were some rough spots🤣 I tried the best I could though! I did have ramen a few more times after that especially on long food carry's as you are right it is so light. I also carried it as 'emergency food'

    This was probably the best vegan food video I've seen so far as hiking PCT (or AT or CDT)! It's nice to see the thinking and nutrition behind your trail food choices (like add spinach to things -- I really recall that) and you explained that nicely! ... Also, I've heard cold soaking quinoa doesn't work so well...did cold soak quinoa on the PCT?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so very much Allen! Yes I cold soaked quinoa on trail...only once..it did not work well!!

    I don’t use the term vegan because I refrain from eating all animal products for health reasons and not moral or ethical reasons.
    Not only am I completely plant based but I also don’t eat oil, sugar, or salt.
    Do you think that someone on this type of diet can backpack? 🤷‍♂️

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  2 года назад

      Yes I do think someone on this diet can backpack. It will involve a lot more planning and preparation. You can get oil from natural sources, eat foods which contain natural sugars and ensure you maintain sodium levels especially if sweating a lot. No doubt it would mean carrying a heavier weight due to more perishable items and having to visit places more frequently to resupply - but I'm sure it can be done with more advanced nutritional knowledge.

    Hi Mary! Love all your videos. I have a question: where did you get your nutritional yeast and what did your take it for? What health benefits does it give?!!

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much Debra! I got it from a whole foodsstore and also sent it ahead to myself in boxes when I found more as it is difficult to find on trail. I've read it can help strengthen your immune system, it contains antioxidants and has a probiotic-effect on the intestines. Its got lots of 'complete' protein and B vitamins in it too (especially B12). I took it for all these reasons as well as the lovely cheesy flavour it gives everything 😋

    that was a brilliant sum up & the prologue to the questions focusing on the vitamins especially useful in a real world scenario. thank you TinkerBell (should we still call you that now you're back?)
    i think in my clumsy way i was trying to ask: did you notice a sustained energy output from yourself compared to your fellow hikers on a typical 'hiker diet'.. did they rollercoaster with energy levels (i think i asked this before you met the boys pre sierras)? so maybe compared to the women you hiked with or maybe gender wasn't a factor. did other vegans you met mention their energy levels throughout a days hike? thanks again

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад +2

      Thank you so much Rigby Bucolic! Mary or Tinkerbell - whichever you prefer😁 I felt I didn't experience an afternoon slump like a lot of other hikers, when I got to camp at night I still always felt like I had fuel left in the tank so to speak. When I hiked with Kevin & Jennifer they were the same as me, they were vegan and tried to do it healthy too so I definitely think a healthy diet helped more than a sugar laden one!

    As a vegetarian I found this video very useful. Just one question. Your daily food intake was a bit more substantial than I expected. Given the distances between resupply locations (7 days+ in some cases), food must have taken up a lot of space and weight in your backpack, or have I missed something? Thanks.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 года назад +1

      Thank you Gordon. No you haven't missed anything, it did take up an awful lot of space and weighed a lot! Leaving town with a fully loaded pack full of food was awful as it was such a struggle those first few days.

    Atta girl Mary !!!
    Nicely done 👍👍
    2 thumbs up for you !!!😁 For those that believe in creation know that man's original diet was totally plant-based !!! But all of us need to be aware of foods being contaminated with genetically modified contamination. What you said about being more aware of your body after becoming vegan is no surprise to me. I'm not strictly vegan, vegetarian or meat eater.. but there's lots of things out there that I will not eat. Sadly so much of our food is processed. But we each must do what we think is right.
    I like your comment about planning for the trail what you eat.
    Food can be used as a tool.. eat for the trail a head 😀😋.
    And enjoy the food have fun with it it's all part of the experience 😉😁
