My favorite CoM character i ever played was a college freshman loser who worked as a barista who had the powers of Sun Wukong the monkey king. His defining relationship was a regular at his shop he had a crush on but he ended up using his powers to become a vigilante crime investigator so it was a long series of near misses and almost accidentally cluing her in to the mist until one session the crew was on a case and she was one of the suspects. it was great.
One thing that really stuck with me when reading the "three features" section for picking out Mythos themes is picking the SECOND most obvious thing. (This is most helpful when making a Touched character.) For example, if you're making a Rift of Rapunzel a theme for magic hair is easy to come up with, but kinda predictable. If you really want to make them feel unique, perhaps they live in an Enclave of their lonely tower. Maybe you can rip healing powers from Disney's take on the story. And then as the Rift delves further into their mythos they'll likely get a new hairstyle. (Now of course there's nothing wrong with going with the obvious, and either of the examples also work great as Logos themes. BUT this is definitely something to consider when making characters.)
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the account password. I would love any help you can give me.
@Elisha Vincenzo thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I'm trying to work my way up to either DM'ing or playing a game using this RPG setup after normally sticking to NWoD and MOTW. I love the idea of this whole thing, always have, so it'll be a delight to get into it! I also just came to the stunning realisation that technically somebody can run under the literary 'mythos' of Bling Bling Boy--
When starting City Of Mist I promised myself not to take a tank so I could experience some different roles. Then I took Mitosis😂 It felt familiar bit still very new for the importance of the character mechanics to the story. On the current campaign I created a war doctor, who lost his wife, touched by the mythos of Frankenstein. With the sessions I felt scared because the character was taking breaks in logos that I cared for. I felt without agency and I acted like a bad player. Only with time I comprehended that , as I have to face reality, so does my character and has to evolve. I love this feature of CoM. I still don't know how to implement further mythos, but "change with the game" is a very important lesson to enjoy the game (and to be less of a nuisance for other players)
This is far better than the video shown on the website. I am curious to play this with my friends and one is adamant that we only make characters based on well known mythos and the other is concerned about how to do power scaling.
Kevin here. You can make a character based off any mythos you want. I had a player make a character based off Veggietales if that says anything. In regards to power scaling, that's also something City of Mist does well. With the power tag system, each tag is worth the same +1 (or -1 if it's a weakness), so technically someone with a super strength tag and a normal revolver tag are on a level playing field. Not to mention, City of Mist isn't just about combat, so you can have characters who are really, really good at fighting people but can't search for clues or hold a conversation to save their lives. Hope this helps!
During the City of Mist Starter Box Kickstarter, I had a fun time with the exercise of creating my own "starter set" pregens. I took the "myths" of the Classic Universal Monsters as Mythos. It was a lot of fun. I still need to expand the core six (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Wolfman, Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Invisible Man) and add The Bride of Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera.
Every one of these videos is just fantastic ! Reminding me again and again why I so eagerly kickstarted this thing back in the day! I have the playlist set up for my new Crew! Thanks for all of these!
I am promising to not have my character gain powers from anime (for my first game at least). Instead my character would channel the power of Godzilla's radioactive beam's.
I haven’t been able to play this game yet, but I’d really like to. And instead of playing playing a a mythical hero from ages old folklore, I’d like to draw on inspiration from my favorite video game, Monster Hunter World, and making characters based on different monster. Examples: Gammoth as a pre-K/daycare teacher Ratholos as an Airforce veteran Malfestio as a street magician Odogaron as a teenage punk Kulu-Ya-Ku as a kleptomaniac that raises chickens
My character is the only "legendary" character in the group, as almost everyone else had two logos and two mythos. My character is possessed by the Black Knight, and his only tether to his normal life is his retired mom. It's really fun because his armor is a relic and he has a dragon. But what makes the campaign super interesting is another player is inhabited by Lancelot, causing interesting conflict between our mythos. I am also curious if the Lord of the Rings counts as a myth, because I have a concept for a millionaire who has a lot of social influence, but his only mythos is that he possesses the one true ring. Any thoughts?
I think a character based on inspiration cat posters who could jump long distances and heal people emotionally and physically would be pretty fun to play.
So, I had a character based on the Nemian lion who started with the bastion mythos of invulnerability, but as time went on the character swapped two of his logos with the expression mythos of claws that can cut through everything and a mobility mythos which gave him inhuman speed and strength with his last card being a training mythos of being an MMA fighter so once he got within striking range there is little a person can do to stop him from mauling them to death. My characters notable feats include tearing open a bank vault door, and ripping a entire mafia to shreds. His weaknesses were strangulation, relic powers, his own claws, and people who are out of arms reach because it either bypasses his invulnerability or makes him unable to harm them. His character arc was all around battling with the anger and aggression of the Nemian lion while retaining himself eventually capping with him becoming a legend with his anger getting the better of him time and time again as he looses himself to his mythos being all to aware of it happening.
I want to play a Character with the Achilles Mythos. But probably a female version who is in a relationship with someone regular girl, who basically has the role of Patroclos.
I LOVE the Idea of playing a character whose mythos is Alduin from Skyrim. The idea is the stronger he gets the closer he comes to meeting his end by the dragonborn.
I don’t know if you folks are still paying attention to this video, but I had a question: would characters from modern media (movies, TV shows, video games, etc.) be able to qualify as Mythoi? I had an idea for a character with the Mythos of Jake the Dog from Adventure Time, a cartoon on Cartoon Network, and I wanted to know if that could work.
That totally works. You can play any fictional character as a Mythos of a City of Mist character. There are many fan-made characters based on pupolar culture - naturally, we can't do that do to due to copyright.
I'm starting to get interested in City of Mist and I already have an idea for a character, just trying to think about the powers i would give him. A middle-aged hunter cursed by the legends of the evil spirit Wendigo, trying to find out more about the legend and how to get rid of it.
What's the date of literature, like, I'm guessing Robin hood, but could you have someone from comic books, manga or light novels. Cause my friend is starting a game of this, and I was wanting to role through like kirito, or and Optimus prime
Im really interested in trying CoM. I think it might fit our current campaign we recently started better than 5e which is what are using. How could I best go about just ignoring the CoM lore aspects and just transfer my own setting and their 5e pcs to CoM?
I'm working on a character based on Elric of Melnibone (one of my favorite fantasy novels) to help my players get a grasp on how character creation works. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Great concept!! His logos can be a modern equivalent of a washed-out king or emperor, perhaps a bankrupt tycoon or the hobo king of an alley or the king of the ring, a boxer. What does a modern-day emperor mean to you? His Mythos confers powers of sorcery (Adaptation), fighting prowess (Expression), and of course the Relic of Stormbringer! You can get more ideas by asking our community on FB, Discord, or Reddit.
@@CityofMist I hadn’t even thought of that angle for his logos but that’s amazing. One of the logos I went for was having his defining relationship be his energetic best friend sorta like Moonglum
Hearing about City of Mist for the first time and I had an idea for a Saitama-eqsue character. Being essentially invincible, but prone to boredom and depression. As well as generally being an idiot.
Nope. You can play as an animal using the same rules. You can technically even play as an object or location. If you're speaking of fantasy races or as a furry or something, that too. Pick a mythos that would reasonably change your form into something else(eg, someone picking Fenrir might appear as a werewolf, someone picking Titania might appear elven or fey-like)

There are definitely healing powers outside of the Disney version. In fact, I'd say most versions of Rapunzel heal the prince with her tears.

I had been looking for sources to learn more about myths, thank you for the recommendations!
I like to compare the mythos/logos system in this game to Superman, with his normal career as a reporter supporting his superhero duties.
